The trustees present their report and finanaal statements for the year ended 31 July 2020.
The accounts have been prepaTed in accordance wth the acc￿11￿9 poliues set ￿t in note 1 to the accounts

Objectives and activities

3. providing an accreditation scheme for courses and pracb'b"oners in English for academic pu￿1$e$ and
4. promoting and disseminating understanding of English for A¢ademic Purposes to relevant stakeholders.
The trustees have paid due regard to guidan￿ issued by the Charity Commi55ion in d￿ldIng what activities
the charity should undertake.
In order to achieve its tharitable objects, BALEAP undertakes a range of activth.es induding fae&tCrface and
online events. publication of research and conference pre5ertats.ons proJuclifM of 51alemenls of good
practice suth as teacher competenGes and guidelines for testing.
BALEAP ha5 until now carried out its wJrk through the acti¥ibes of $￿cOmMittee5 and working parties which
report regularly to an executrve committee. t*thich in retum reports to an annual general meeting. The su
committees currenty COTnprise the BALEAP Accredrtalion Scheme IBASI committee, which deals wtth I￿th
individual and instrtulional aceredrtation and the Research and Publicatr'on5 {RPI committee. These are mo
slat4e enlilies wth long-term aims. Wbrking parties are set up to deliver specific projecls over a short term.
The professional development ol EAP praclitsoners is achieved through regular Professional Issue5 Meetings
IPIMS), a biennial conference, a Research Training Event Serles IResTESI and a series of webinar5. PIM5
are held three lo four tsmes a year, hosted ty a member insts'tution. ResTES events are often linked to PIMS.
They are open lo members and noTrmembers and usually also attended by publishers, repre$entatr¥es to
promote leaching books and other support material. In order to broaden tyjr reach lo oversea5 pr3clitioner5,
we have introduced webinars, which may be slan(kalone events or linked lo a PIM. Both the individual and
instilulional accredrtation schemes also organise regular events lo familiarise prath"tioners wth Ihe schemes.
All members have access to a discussion list through which they can engage in discussion on topics of mutual
oncem. engage in informal con5ultsncy OT surveys and oblairh adwce about testing, materials for courses,
syllabus design and recrurtmenl. These acti¥rties contribute to publtc benefit by enabling teachers to
become better infornied ab￿1 the nature of their work and thus provide higher quality teaching to internatsonal
student5 on EAP programmes.
Al the end of 2019 a call for prorx)sals fw Speoal Interest Groups was wt OUL Al the beginning of 2020. eight
Special Interest Groups were set up to allow members to develop interests in certain speofic areas. These will
benefit a wder audien￿ than those who can attend the main BALEAP face to face evenl5. The SIGS that
were proposed and have been sel up are". Academic Literaae5" Creative Disupline5", Developing, Tea¢hing
and Testing Academic Listeners", Doctoral Educabon," Soaal Justice", Technology Enhanced Leaming (TELI..
Testing, Assessment and Feedback,. and Transnational Education (TNEI.
BALEAP contributes lo the public benefit of students through its Accredttation Scheme. which is designed to
ensure the qualty of EAP courses_ Accredited courses are Itsled on the websf(e so that students can be sure
they are choosing a high quality course. Members of the accreditaW¢)n scheme are r&inspected every fo
years lo maintain the original quality of Ihe courses.

Achievements and perfomiance
Membership numbers continued to rise steadily. In Juty 2019 the number of members was 382 wth 83
oveTseas. In 2020 this had grown lo 445 membetships wth 112 overseas.
During the Course of this finanryal year the Covid 19 pandemic spread a￿0$$ the world and from March 2020
all BALEAP events moved online. The rapidity of change meant that the PIM planned for March 2020 on the
theme of'lntegration. at Northumbria had to be postpMed unlil the followng year.
The AGM took place as a Zoom meeting on Friday 27 March 2020. The resurts of the electronic declions that
had tsken place earfier in the year were confirne¢Y and new members of the executive committee were
welcomed to their posts.. 8ella Reichard was elected as Treasurer leaving her previcyjs rde of Web Officer.
Ania Rolinska was elected as Officer. Lisa Hanson was elected as Infom81K)n Officer. Steven Herron
was elecled as Researth antl Publications Officer. Honorary membership was approved for Maggie Ward
Goodbody on her rets"remenl from the University of Bath in re￿gnItr.0n of her contribution lo 8ALEAP as a
fomier Chair and a member of ihe BALEAP Accreditats"on Stheme committee. A further eleth.on was required
in hAay followng the death of the TEAP Officer. Gary Riley-Jones. The executs've committee also made the
decision lo introduce a new role of SIGS Officer in order to manage the nevly ueated SIGS. This was
approved at the March 2020 AGM 8nd the election lcd( place follwng this_ FollovAng these elections. Paul
Hendrie was elected as TEAP Officer. Anneli Wlliams was elected as SIGS Officer and the ￿0 vacancies of
Ordinary Member were filled by Natasha Ingall and Anna Murawska. These membets of the executive
Committee ￿11 be confimed in their rdes al the AGM in 2021 al the Biennial COnfere￿e hosted by the
Universrty of Glasgow.
There were PIMS thi$ year. but the onsel of the Covid 19 pandemic Meant signTficanl changes to the usual
programme of events and lo the planning of future events. The November PIM was held on 9 November 2019
at Goldsmiths, Universty of London on The Future of EAP.. It was followed on 13 November by a webinar on
the same theme as an opportunity for further comment and discus￿0￿ of vthat was covered at the PIM. 2020.
however. saw a succes51￿ of postponements but a150 innovation in the face of the Irangb"on to online
working and teathing. The PIM due lo be held in Ma￿h 2020 was poslponed. as was BALEAP'S first
overseas PIM planned to take tAa¢e in LuxemtxyJrg in June 2020 on the t￿¥C of 'EAP for Doctoral Studl-
Further planning for face-tIFface events was wt on hold. bul a 'Pop Up PIM, was arranged and held as a
digital event on 17 June 2020. 11 was hosted by the Hong Kong University of Soence and Technology on the
theme 'Migrating te8ching lo Mline delivery, and attratted an inlemats.onal audience. In parallel to the PIMS, a
series of webinars and other digital events were offered by the BALEAP SIGS. most notably the TELSIG, as
well as a BALEAP webiftaT on 'C￿aling digitsl content Ixerte and Dther loolsl, 120 Novemter 2019}.
BALEAP'S major collaboration with the Chinese EAP Assouation ICEAPAI and colleagues ai Xi'an Jiaotong
Liverpool Universty in China on a joint conference to be held in May 2020 al XJTLU was another event that
Was unable to go ahead and had to be poslpone(J.
Similarly, the usual free BALEAP Accrei1ilation Scheme (BASI profewonal development evenl held annual
in May was not able to go ahead. In 2020 it was to have been held in Edinburgh on 2 May 2020 on Discipline
Specificty. This was also the case wrth the popular Testing Roadshows, sthich also had to be paused until
further notice.
BALEAP'S furKling stream, whith was introduced in 2019 and de￿gned to recognise the work thal our
members do in collaboralion wth a broad range of colleagues in HEIS, continued a new tranche of
awards of £750 budgeted f¢r out 012018-2019 suryAus fvnds. Ttte call for pro￿saI5 Was announced at the
AGM in March 2020. The focus was on 'Narratives of innovats.on and resilience.. Supporting student learning
experiences in challenging times,. Sucossfvl W￿"ents of the award would contribute their accounts to fom
part of a cc4laled pUt￿l¢ation to be pubti5hed ￿ the BALEAP websf(e.

Ouring August 2019, BALEAP assessors w5rted UK instituknons as part of Ihe 8ALEAP Ac¢rèditation
Scheme IBASI. and in February 2020, an accreditab.on visjt took place to Nazarbayev Unive¥￿ty in
ltszakhstsn. The EAP programmes at all three institution5 were accTedited. All oiher accreditation visrts lo
institutions planned for the remainder of the 201 ￿2020 f nancial year had lo be postponed. The BAS Working
Group. however, has been able lo continue its work ￿VIeWr￿j the BAS Handbook and Crrteria lo ensure Ihat
these can be used both vrithin the UK aThJ Overseas and are relevant to &4P delivery in other contexls.
13 new TEAP Fellows were accredited from the Nov 2019 and June 2020 submissions for Fellowship {3
Fellows. 10 Assoaate Fellows). The TBIP Officer 15 b*>th"ng With the TEAP l•knrking GTOUP to revisè the
Criteria and TEAP Handbook.
The Nmnner of the 2019 BALEAP Dissertation was Indrit 8ulku. Ifidrit's dissert81ion is entived '￿at features of
legal writing matter lo domain an¢J language specialists? An ex￿Oratory study investigating indigenous
assessment criteria in a secC￿d language legal contexy. It was wJbryMtted to Lancaster Universty as part of a
Master degree.
The Chair cMtinues to WTile regular 8ALEAP news a￿"￿e5 for Jthjmal of English for Academic Purposes,
providing updates on 8ALEAP acti￿lY times a year (September 2019, December 2019. January 2020,
Marth 2020, May 2020, July 20201. BALEAP members have been invited to contribute narratives of teaching
EAP in their own contexts across the work and these are incorF4wated into the news artides.
In resp)nse to members. requests for events that do not encroath on weekends. a survey of the membership
was carried out by the organising committee of the 2021 Glasgow conference to see if there was a preference
for a Thursday-salurday rather than a Friday-sunday event. There was a ￿Ight preference for Thur5day-
Saturday and this was taken Into account in the ￿annIng for Ihe conference.
Flnanclal revlew
At the end of the financial year. the d)arity had net reswrces amountr.ng to £275.216 {2019-. £242,518). The
trustees consider this a¢Jequate to continue the planned vrt)rk of the tharity.
It is the policy of the tharity that unrestricted lunds **¥"c* have not been designated for a sperjfic use shcsuld
be maintained at a level equivalent lo i)etsveen three and six month's expenditure. The trustees consider that
reserves al this level wll ensure Ihat. in the event of a significant drop in funding. Ihey will be able to continue
the Charity's current activities while considerats.on is given to way5 in which addikn"tsnal lunds may be raised.
Thi$ level of reserves has been MaInt￿ned t￿oughoUt the year.
The Irustees have assessed the major risk5 to which the chanty is exposed. and are satisfied that 5yslem5 are
in place to rnitsgale exposure to the rnajor risks.

Future plan5
Two major conferences ale coming up in the period August 2020 lo Juty 2021 and both V+yII be online. The
first is the biennial conference hosted by the University of Glasgow on the theme'Exploring pedagogical
approaches in EAP leaching, to be held on &10 April 2021. As well as the usual range of papers and other
conference activities, there will be both BAS and SIG events during the &day period. The BALEAPAGM will
also lake place during the conference. The CEAPA BALEAP conference hosted by Xi'an Jiwlong Liverpool
University, China wll be hdd online between 28-31 May 2021.
The SIGS vall submit rep)rt$ to the E￿U￿'Ve Commiitee meeting lo be hdd in November 2020 and will
continue to act as a focu5 for the development of speofic intere￿$ in EAP and lo run online events for their
rnembers.
There will be three PIMS. The Novembef 2020 PIM wll be held online by the University of Kent on '2020
Visions.. Looking back and looking ahead., The event is to take place on Friday 6 November In response to
members, requests that events should not always take ￿ace at weekends. The spring 2021 PIM vlill be h05ted
by Northumbria Universty M 27 March the theme of'lntegrab"on'. In June 2021, the PIM wÉll be hosted
by the University of Durham.
The Chair of BAS will continue to lead the ￿￿r￿"r￿j Group to revise the Cnteria and Handbook of the
Accreditation Scheme lo ensure rt can be used lo accredtt instrtLrtions delivering EAP both wrthin the UK and
overseas. A BAS Commrttee meeting will be helt1 on 7 October 2020 to review the work carried out on the
criteria and the Handbook and lo plan for carrying out online accreditats.on during 2021. There will be a free
8AS event in May 2021 on Oisopline Speoficity. as wdl as an introducb.on to the new scheme lo be launched
in 2022.
8 TEAP fellowth'p subrnissions from November 2020 are now beiry assessed. and addilional submissions
are expected in June 2021. Assessors in the IAt)rking Group will continue to meet lo w¢yk on the revision of
the TEAP Criteria and Handbook. Free onlwbe TEAP meetup events will be held in FebNary and March 2021
to wovide peer 5UPPOrt lo candidates.

The financial slatemenls are prepared in sterling. v4hith 15 the functional cwrency of the charty. Monetary

At the time of approving the ffinanci￿ slalemenls. the trustees have a ￿asonable expectation that the

trustees continue to adow the going concem bas5 of accounting in preparing the financial statements.

Unrestricted funds are av8ilable fty use al the th'scre1v￿ of the trustees in furtherance of their charitable
objectives.
Restricted fund5 are subject to speufi¢ condrtions by éonors as to h¢)w they may be used. The purw)ses
and uses of the restricted fvnds are set out in the notes to the financial statements.

Cash donations are recognised on receipt. Other d(Thtions are recogrnsed once the charity has been
notified of the donation. unless perfomiance conditions require deferral of the amount. Income tax

of the donation.

Flnanclal impact
The finanual impact of the Cow&19 pandem￿ on BALW is negative and poytive. As our income
has dropped ￿Ightly. our expenses have also dropped. Overall. for the current financial year, we have no
reason lo be worried, but we are closely monrtoring the factors that influer￿e OUT decreased Income and
vknether these remain commensurate wth decreased expenses.
Our iwo main sources of income are memberth"p contributions and events fees. Our membership income
ha5 decreased only very slightly. However, we assume that some membership contributions have corne out
of the previous year's CPD budget for some of our membe(s. As CPD budgets keep being reduced, we are
aware of the possibility that there may be a further reducb'on in income for the next year. but we expect this
to be temporary and contributs.ons to stabilise in 2022 al the latest.
Income from events has gone COmF4etdy for a year. as all events were etther cancelled or moved online
and offered for free. Having reviewed our own experien￿ practice in the sector, we are be9inning lo
tharge for Mline events in January 2021. The majorrty of even15 has not incurred costs be￿uSe hosts
were able to use existing platfofm licenses provtded by their instr'lutions. but Ihere will be costs for our
Uptttming rnain eonferenee. ￿ a￿ expeth.ng lo break even for this. wth the introduction of fees for this
event.
Our expenses have decreased because online event5 so far have not incurred co$1$ (catering, room hire
etc.) and there have been no travel expenses for any asped of the charity. AJI meetings that would nomially
have created expenses (Exec meets'ngs, &4Wt64P ratffication meetsn95. training events el¢.) have been
moved online.
Practical Impact
A main impact C￿ our organisalion was that several Img-planned events had to be cèncdled or postponed,
but conversely, other events were organise(I sometimes at short notice, espeaally around online teaching
and assessmenl. Other events were moved online. resulting in higher-than-expected attendan￿. Meetings
We￿ also moved online. resultrng in mcye frequent communicats"on.
Quf members were impacted rn￿e Ihan our organisation, and we have cDmrnissioned a research project lo
find out exactly what the Impact was and how prd)lems were solved, so that members can leam frorn each
other. Throughout the pandemic, the community has stepped up lo support each other through a wide
variety of online events and resources. vknich was p0s￿ble because throLtgh our organisation there were
ready-made communicalion5 channels, such as new SIGS. some of ¥thich Stepped up to provide
informatson and ￿allOrMS for exchange of practice.
Overall, the directors are of the opinion that the organisalion has adequate resources lo provide its services
lo members and ￿11 keep llis under constant review as the response to and recovery from the pandemic
progress.
