**public benefit)**|**We are continuing to try to educate young and old alike by**
**giving them a contact point for any member of the public**
**fnding sick/injured/orphaned hedgehogs in an efort to**
**protect an endangered species from becoming extinct. Our**
**lady, Stephanie is doing more talks in and around the**
**Colchester area. Our lady in Chelmsford [Sheila] is now**
**only able to do talks during the day and is now asking for**
**lifts to the venues.**
**We are also trying to encourage everyone to put food and**
**water out for hedgehogs and to stop using pesticides, rat**
**poison and slug pellets and also to make the public aware**
**of the injuries strimmers cause.**
**Now we are trying to make public aware of leaving holes in**
**the ground where they are either going to put fence posts**
**or shrubs.**
**We continue to try to make dog owners more**
**aware/responsible when letting their dogs out into their**
**garden late at night by using a lead.**
**We do all the above in various ways, i.e. our website,**
**advice leafets and when we give talks to various**
**organisations and schools and facebook.**
**We are continuing to try to encourage members of the**
**public to provide access to and from their gardens to allow**
**hedgehogs wider opportunity for habitat etc.**
**A great contribution is made by member volunteers. We**
**are grateful for the many hours volunteers have spent**
**caring for hedgehogs, collection of sick and injured**
**hedgehogs and re-homing them. Also their help in fund**
**raising for us.**
**Also for the new volunteers who make items for us to sell**
**to raise funds. Including our volunteer who runs our e-bay**
**account selling items to raise funds.**
**Once again we also wish to acknowledge our Independent**
**Examiner, who carries out the necessary checks of our**
**yearly accounts.**
**Without our volunteers, and Independent Examiners help,**
**advice and time we could not continue without all their**
**sterling eforts.**
**Anne Taylor at Wickham Bishops is now the main stay for**
**the surrounding areas. Although her contact details are not**
**available to the public. Anne is contactable via Hedgehog**
**Haven’s facebook page which she manages. The public**
**make contact with Christine at Frinton, who either directs**
**them to Spring Lodge Vets in Witham if they cannot get the**
**hogs to Frinton, or Christine contacts Anne on the best way**
**forward.**
**Anne has continued to be a stoicpresence to Hedgehog**|| |---|---|---| **March 2024** **TAR** 3 **Haven and has taken in more hedgehogs during 2023 than any other year since she joined us.** **We enrolled a number of volunteers to take hogs once treated and fully recovered to get them up to safe weight for releasing and this has helped.** **We are now looking for more volunteers to help with hoglets and hand feeding.** **March 2024** **TAR** 4 Section D Achievements and performance |**Summary of the main**

**during the year**|**Since opening in 2007, over 6,000 hedgehogs have**
**passed through our centres either by the general**
**public contacting us directly, through local**
**veterinary surgeries and also referrals from St**
**Tiggywinkles, the BHPS and the RSPCA.**
**Since opening we have never turned away a**
**hedgehog that needs care. During 2023 the Frinton**
**Centre has continued taking hogs in from our**
**known vets and also our supporters due to personal**
**reasons. We continued to take in hedgehogs from**
**the areas surrounding Tiptree, including Braintree,**
**Witham, Chelmsford, Maldon and Colchester since**
**the rescue centres there closed down and also from**
**the rescue centre in Thorrington when they are full.**
**Wickham Bishops was refurbished to make the**
**Treatment room more practical with storage and**
**workareas. **|| |---|---|---| ## **Section E Financial review** **We hold cash of £85,000 in our Treasurers Bank Brief statement of the charity’s Account. We have a Savings account with £41,000+. policy on reserves We aim to ensure we have enough funds in our bank account to cover veterinary fees, medication, which is one of our biggest expenditures after purchasing food stuffs. The savings account is for any building projects that may be needed. We aim to hold at least £5,000 and no more than £100,000 in reserve at the year end. We have had a number of bequests from members of the public which has increased our income in the past 3 years. We are aware that we are over the Reserve for funds, but due to personal circumstances we are now not able to do the fund raising events and we are cutting down on ways of raising funds [as seen below under main sources of funds] so that we can concentrate more time on the care of hedgehogs and not worry about fund raising. We are also looking at helping two other ladies to set up Treatment Centres under Hedgehog Haven in the Great Bentley and Brightlingsea areas. Sales on e-bay** - **Through raising these funds we have been able to purchase/make more cages etc. Upgrade soft release pens. Paying for the day-to-day running expenses, i.e. veterinary bills, medications, food stuffs, cleaning materials, insurance, licence fees.** ## **Section F Other optional information** **Future Plans** **We aim to continue our record of ‘Never turning away a hedgehog that needs our care and attention’. During 2023 we advised The Haven Vets in Clacton that Frinton were only able to take a limited number of hedgehogs now Christine doesn’t have her husband Chris’s support. Frinton takes hedgehogs in that had been referred to vets or supporters. An answerphone message was left on the Frinton number advising the public what to do and where to take hedgehogs that needed help. A number of people left messages saying thank you for such a concise advice message.** **To continue raising public awareness of the dangers to all wild animals especially to Hedgehogs, which are now on the UK red list of species vulnerable to extinction.** **To enrol more volunteers to look after hedgehogs once they have made a full recovery and they just need to attain a safe weight of 600g in the summer and 650g in Autumn before releasing.** **We hope to also train volunteers to take hoglets once they have been stabilised to continue the hand feeding until they are able to feed themselves. Again Unable to do this during 2023 due to personal/health reasons. Anne Taylor at Wickham Bishops covers the Central Essex area including Braintree, Chelmsford,, Witham and Maldon area running a Rescue Centre for Hedgehog Haven and she has and her volunteers have continued doing a sterling job.** **Look at finding someone in the Colchester area that could take on the role of Rescuer in that area and setting them up.** **We now have a Veterinary nurse from Kingfauns Vets in Clacton and Dovercourt. There is also a lady in Brightlingsea who has just come on board. So we will be looking at setting them up with the equipment they need. At our next Meeting we will discuss the possibility of purchasing incubators for them, as this will take the pressure off both the Frinton and Wickham Bishops Centres.** **Anne will be monitoring the number of hedgehogs being taken directly to Spring Lodge vets from the Maldon Rescue, with no admission or treatment sheets, thus making it difficult to return the hedgehogs which is our main aim to return them from whence they came and also to know what the circumstances are for the hog to be taken to a vet in the first place. There has been no communication from Maldon as there has been no formal agreement.
