REPORT FROM THE CHAIR OF TRUSTEES
This year represented a decade of flying children for Lucy Air Ambulance for Children - a milestone which can't go
unacknowledged. Monday 25th October 2021 marked ten years since Lucy Air Ambulance for Children's first-
ever transfer. On this day in 2011, we flew Benjamin 170 miles from University of Staffor¢Jshire Hospltal in Stoke-
on-Trent to Kingston Hospital in Surrey. so that he could receive neonatal care closer to home. Benjamin'5
transfer was an extremely special milestone for Lucy AAC. This was the beginning of our national air ambulance
service that has changed so many children's lives over the past decade. I personally want to thank everyone who
has played a role in this success, no matter how big or small- we could not have achieved this without you.
Thankyou.
It has been a mixed year for Lucy Air Ambulance for Children. Fundraislng ha5 been challenging due to the
impart of the uncertain economic climate we are operating in. and yet our seNice has grown 29% year-on-year
and we have once again responded to every single referral we have received. l am incredibly proud that we have
grown our service offering through the investment in key medical equipment. Such as the Paraid Elevating
Transporter+ Trolley- a new state of the art piece of equipment which will not only provide a better experience
for the babies that we fly, but will also make the job of our brilliant medical team easier. In addition, we have
invested in a training programme for our medical flight team for the first time ever. As a charity. we are mindful
that having more trained medical staff available to work on Lucy AAC transfers ensures that our seNice is more
accesslble to children across the UK. We will continue to invest in both of these areas over the coming years. I
would personally like to thank our preferred service provider, Capital Air Ambulance, who has been instrumental
in the success we have achieved in our service this year.
We continue to work closely with our NHS partners and are proud to be recognised as a key part of their
infrastructure for both neonatal and paediatric transport. The relationships with our NHS transport partners 15
key to our ability to help children, and we would particularly like to thank London NTS, Embrace and NECTAR,
who work closely with us and always see the value in what we, as a small charityi can do for children across the
country.
In terms of fundraisln8, this year was particularly difficult- yet due to the dedication of the Lucy AAC staff team
and the ongoing commitment from our loyal donors, we achieved what we needed to for the children and
families who rely on us. Corporate and Trusts and Foundations remain by far our largest Income streams. Once
again, Houlihan Lokey was our bigEest supporter. Their outstanding and unwavering support of what we do has
seen us through some very challenging external fundraising environments. The Charity made a significant
investment in corporate fundraising this year as we recruited a full.time corporate fundraiser. We are very
excited to see the growth in income this will bring to this area over the coming years. We have also had key
successes in our engagement with trusts and foundations- a special thanks 8oes to the CSIS Charity Fund, ISTAT
Foundation, Souter Charitable Trust, Sobell Foundation. The Tula Trust and the Hospital Saturday Fund- all of
whom have enabled us to continue to change and save children's lives.

TRUSTEES, REPORT {INCORPORATING THE DIREcfoRS' REPORn
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2022
A highlight of this year was the return of our challenge event portfolio. Thi5 income stream is very special to
us as we are left in awe of what individua15 will do to raise funds to help other5. Not only did Terry Knights
run the London Marathon for Lucy AAC, but he also took part In an Iron Man and ran the Marathon Des Sablesl
James White once again challenged himself for us, running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hoursl This is the
second running challenge that James has taken on since Lucy AAC flew his nephew in March 2019.
James, link back to Dur cause brings me nicely back to our families- the very reason we exlst. Through all of
the uncertainty in our external operating environment, we still flew Olivia-Grace from Leeds to London for
life-saving cancer treatment; we transported Ben to Great Orniund Street for specialist investigations into his
rare dlsease; and we continued to fly premature babies home- like Fraser, Emily and Alizeh - so that families
could be reunited and long-term treatment plans established. Ours is a truly amazin8 Se￿1￿ that changes
lives every week.
Over the coming twelve months, we must work to offset the increases in costs that we are experiencing in
providing our service. In 2021, each transfer c05t Lucy AAC on average £8.5CKJ. and in 2022 this cost has risen
by 9.5% to £9,300 per transFer. This is primarily due to the increase in aviation fuel prices. and cannot be
avoided. We are also experiencing an increase in demand for our se)vice. These two factors need to be
carefvlly monitored and managed, especially whi15t we try to recover from a global pandemic and the impart
thi5 had on our income stream5.
Despite all of these challenges, we strive to be there for every child who needs U5. We have robust plans in
place and the right team to deliver on them. l am hopeful for the year ahead of us. I genuinely feel it is going
to be an iconic year for this charity.
Our service is bigger and betterthan ever before, and we a￿ looking forward to an excitin8 2023. We are the
UK'S aeroplane ambulance charity. and when the NHS ca115, we put planes in the alr. We will continue to
change the Iwes of children across the UK as we grow the Se￿lee over years to come.

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2022
ABOUT US
Registered in October 2010, Lucy Air Ambulance for Children is the only charity In the UK that flies children to
hospital by aeroplane. We ensure that children are able to access the specialisl care and treatment they need,
wherever they are in the UK.
Lucy Air Ambulance for Children is a national charlty that flie5 babies and critically ill children to hospital bv
aeroplane to receive specialist treatment and care.
Often the only way babies and critlcally ill children can access specialist care is to travel between hospitals by
aeroplane and we are the only air ambulance charity in the UK that provides this unique service. These
transfers provide life-changing outcomes for the children Lucy AAC fly, including: children being discharged
from long hospital stays, overcoming diseases like cancer. and receiving a diagnosis which finally enable5
families to gain new support from other organisations that are dlsease/disability specific.
The NHS does not have any budget for air ambulance transfer5 and relie5 on Lucy AAC to provide this e55ential
setvice at no cost.
Our unique service:
We believe that safe, long-distance air transfers within the UK should be avallable for any child needing olle.
regardless of distance or cost. As part of the air ambulance network, we are the only charity in the UK that
offers transfers by aeroplane which means that..
We can cover the whole of the UK to transfer children over long-distances and across regions.
We can fly in a wider range of weather conditions meaning that our flights are less likely to be postponed.
Our pressurized cabins can support children with breathing difficulties.
We can fly at se8 level to ensure less pressure on a child's brain.
Our aircraft can provide an infection-free environment for children post-surgery.
Aeroplanes are also less subject to noise and vibration and therefore over longer distances are often a
safer and more comfortable environment for children, especially premature babies.
There is always space for parents to accompany their child which we know Is so important during such a
difficult time for families.
We are also the only UKcharitywho has ourown intensive care fllght-ready Incubatorwhieh enables bables
to be moved long dlstances to neonatal intensive Care units~ no other charity offers this service.
Each transfer costs on averaEe £9,300.
OBJEcfivES
The principal objectives of Lucy AAC are:
he relief of sickness for babie5 and children requiring expert medical care or relocation. We do this by
facilitating the provision of a dedicated air transfer service throughout the UK and providing holistic support
to their familiel,

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
Due to the ongoing impact of Covid-19 and the uncertain economic environment, fundraisin8 wa5 particularly
challenging this financial year. Our strongest income streams continue to be Corporate and Trusts and
Foundations. Both performed well, and represented 68% of totsl funds raised this year. The Charity would like to
thank Houlihan Lokey for their continued support. Throu8h hosting the'90 Minute Dash, event Houlihan Lokey
115 employee5 came together and raised over £50,000 for Lucy Air Ambulance for Children. Our largest
fundraisin8 event to date. We would also like to thank the following Trusts and Foundations, who significantlv
contributed to our funding and enabled us to continue to respond to 100% of the referrals we received- CSIS
Charity Fund, ISTAT Foundation, Souter Charitable Trust. Sobell Foundation. The Tula Trust and The Hospital
Saturday Fund - many of whom have funded our work for several years. This commttment to what we do is
Invaluable.
This year we saw the return of our Challenge Event portFolio. which had been completely put on hold due to the
pandemic. It wa5 wonderful to see our 7 London Landmarks runner5 take on this brilliant half marathon for us.
Thank you, Nicola. Kevin, John. Ben, Chris, Mary and MSchelle, who ran and raised £9.196 for Lucy AAC. Some of
our runners had been waiting over two years to run this event of us. Thank you a150 to Teri and Lyla Studd who
raised £1,882 by jumping out a plane on Saturday 31" July. This unstoppabSe duo completed a parachute jump in
memoryofthelr grandsonlnephew Sebastian who we flew last year.
In terms of our service, we met our key objective of responding to 100% of all referrals re￿ived. We saw an
In(￿aSe in demand for our service of 29% on the previous financial year. This demonstrates strong growth
and a continued increase in need for what we do. We continued to fly premature babies in our incvbator
throughout the year- babies such as Fraser who was born 6 weeks early in a holiday cottage in Scotland,
miles away from home. Fraserfs Mum says 'when I got the coll tosay that LucyAirAmbuloncefor Children had

In addltlon, we flew children like Ben and Olwia-Grace who needed critical t￿atMent, which was vital as they
battled their critical illness. Lucy AAC flew Olivia-Grace. who was diagnosed at just 4 months old with a rare
form of Leukemia, from Newcastle to Great Ormond Street Hospf(al In London for life-saving t￿atMent. In
October 2021, she rang the bell outside her hospital ward
she wa5 cancer free. Through Lucy AAC'S
intetvention, Olivia-Grace was able to go home from h05Pltal for the first time in seven months lover half her
A key development in our service thisyear involved investment In new medical equipment which would better
equip Lucy AAC to provide the highest quality medlcal care forthe all the children who need us. Thls included:
A neonatal flight bag to simulate the trolley on a neonatal ward
One-year's supply of speclalist equipment which is essential to our flight incubator and ventilator
Specialist multi-use flight equipment including- an arterial line, pressure transducer. ComfiNest System to
provide a comfortable restraint for babies whilst travelling, small fridgelfreezer to Store breast milk

A further development in our service this year 15 that we have started to offer fixed-wing trainlng to medical

certified to work on Lucy AAC transfers. This training is available to medical staff across the UK and is accredited
by the European Aeromedical Institute IEURAMII. Having more trained medical staff available to work on Lucy
AAC transfer5 ensures our service is more accessible to children across the UK.
