ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2023
Throughout 2023, Trauma Aid UK (TAUK) has continued to provide training in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) to mental health professionals working in traumatised communities worldwide who would not otherwise have access to such training. This has enabled these professionals to acquire professional skills and knowledge in order to alleviate pain and suffering caused by post-traumatic psychological disorders. The board of 7 Trustees meet every 4-6 weeks and are actively engaged in the work of supporting our trainings.
In addition to EMDR Training and providing Continuing Professional Development Seminars and Workshops on-line, TAUK has been working towards promoting professionalization of EMDR as a therapeutic modality in the Arab Countries. This involves developing a professional pathway for certification and encouraging our trainees to undertake advance trainings to develop competencies in EMDR supervision skills. We funded 20 trainees to attend a Consultants Training week in Cairo. A number of the attendees are now at the Consultant level of competency and are seeking ways to be certified with an international professional body. This Cairo training also provided the impetus for the development of a regional EMDR association which TAUK agreed to fund its legal registration.
The past year has also forged greater cooperation with the Arab Countries supported by other Trauma Aid organizations for instance, organising translations of key documents into Arabic. These documents will enable standardization of EMDR training and supervision across the region. The Arab Countries regional network has been able to provide emergency response assistance in other Arabic speaking countries, for example following the Morocco earthquake in September 2023, the floods in Libya.
An increase in donations, including a generous endowment from our late founder and former President, has meant we are able to expand on our charitable aim of encouraging research. We have funded the write up of our first scientific study and publication in a prestigious journal with a wide circulation. We have had initial negotiations with a leading university to set up a global mental health scholarship in memory of our founder. Translation of the core EMDR professional text book into Arabic is another major task we have started this past year. We have engaged with the license holder in the USA and have sourced a reputable publishing house to undertake the translation, printing and distribution.
The EMDR Association UK has established a lasting tribute to our late founder by setting up an award to be granted every two years for the best innovation/service development/initiative involving EMDR in the charity sector.

In 2022 our IT expert, one of the Trustees, developed a computerized organizational system which in 2023 was up and running smoothly. This way we were able to track our trainings efficiently, the number of attendees, the level of certification they are working towards and their supervisors. This has proved invaluable in helping us to handle the details as well as providing an overview of our work.
EMDR UK Association’s regional groups have continued to invite the people we train to CPD workshops pro-bono or, for non-English speakers, to make available the recording to view with their own interpreter. The feedback has shown that UK therapists value the exchange of ideas from international colleagues. The Bosnia and Herzegovina Association have presented at a UK regional association on their EMDR work with people affected by the war.
This year we decided to focus on supporting our network of volunteer Consultants who provide monthly supervision to our trainees. In addition to our annual Volunteer Consultants workshop, we have set up a peer support system and offer 1 free place to attend a national workshop of their choosing. This was done in agreement with the regional groups and the EMDR UK Association.
