Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

K9 Crusaders has supported the local community by providing advice and taking in as many dogs as possible that were in urgent need of our help. We have maintained our commitment to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home local dogs.

Rehoming

Taking in unwanted dogs surrendered in Cornwall, helping people in crisis, often who have suffered loss of home, bereavement or failing health.

Rehabilitation

We have rehabilitated dogs with physical and behavioural problems and endeavoured to re-home these dogs to new loving homes.

Working with local authorities

The charity has an established involvement with local Social Services and Police Departments and is regularly asked to help with dog cases in the knowledge that, borne out of experience, we provide safe, responsible and reliable support. For example, we have taken on several dogs with serious medical problems whose owners have been found deceased or who require long term hospital care.

Work placements and community work

We have continued to provide work placements for college students and people with additional needs.

Our dog behaviourist and trainer organised and trained a group of our dogs to take part in the Kennel Club’s Good Citizens’ Dog Training Scheme. This allowed us to educate our volunteers to train our dogs to get their Canine Good Citizens’ Awards, hoping to make our dogs more re-homable. The scheme also included young adults from “The Outdoor Place” helping them to gain confidence in a safe environment through dog training, with the ultimate goal of having their dogs recognised as service dogs. K9 Crusaders are Kennel Club accredited and we value community outreach.

Telephone and advice line

Our advice line is open 24 hours for emergency calls. We provide help and support with anything dog related and have seen a huge increase in the number of people needing our advice during these difficult times.

Charity shop

The K9 Crusaders’ charity shop in Redruth, run entirely by our amazing volunteers,is continuing from strength to strength despite most towns struggling with footfall these days.

Our shop is of course dog friendly and our Shop Manager, who is a qualified dog behaviourist, is able to offer a “drop-in” service and give advice and help to anyone who has problems with dog related issues.

The shop also provides opportunities for people to volunteer and gain new skills, as well as increasing their confidence and reducing their isolation. It continues to support three young people with additional needs. Two via United Response, a local organisation, and one through their carer.
