**CAMBERWELL ARTS LIMITED CHAIR’S STATEMENT**

## **FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2023**

## **___________________________________________________________________**

It’s been another difficult year for the arts, with the financial landscape deteriorating further as the cost-of-living crisis continues to impact on fundraising.

Camberwell Arts has worked hard to respond to this challenge, continuing to seek out grant funding opportunities that will enable us to provide free arts opportunities for local residents, support commissioning opportunities and engage new voices with the arts. Throughout this process, we have sought to include those most affected by the current economic climate, working with a range of other local charities, community organisations and food banks to do so.

At the heart of all our activities is the annual Camberwell Arts Festival, which this year coincided with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Joining this national celebration there were cakes, there were corgis and there were crowns as Camberwell came together to commemorate the first British monarch to reign for 70 years - and showcase our incredible creative scene in the process.

The opening event on Camberwell Green was free for everyone to attend and incorporated drawing workshops to a dog show, fairground entertainments to a free community feast. It launched the wider Camberwell Arts Festival programme, which included aerial theatre, music commissions, silent movies and more.

Following this, our 2022 Winter Festival offered opportunities to make art as well as meet local artists, craftspeople and makers. Designed to light up the darkest time of the year, this annual celebration of the SE5 art scene radiated colour and creativity across Camberwell and offered a festive frolic through our fantastic arts scene.

Building relationships with our local community has continued to be a priority for Camberwell Arts and we were pleased to work with the following organisations to deliver a wide range of arts activities during the 2022/23 financial year:

The trustees present their report and financial statements for the year ended 31 March 2023.

The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015). The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in the accompanying notes and comply with the Charity's governing document and the Charities Act 2011.

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**

## **Objectives and aims**

## **Public benefit**

Promoting public benefit is at the heart of all Camberwell Arts activities. This is undertaken through the advancement of arts, culture and education – celebrating the arts in Camberwell and Camberwell through the arts.

In order to do this we provide a wide range of free workshops, events and activities to reach audiences who might not otherwise have opportunities to engage with the arts. Through these measures, we aim to increase access, engage new audiences and ensure our resources are available to those who will benefit most from them.

As a result, our activities are open to everyone living, working and studying in Camberwell as well as those from further afield who are visiting the area. The trustees consider, therefore, that the Charity satisfies the public benefit requirement.

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE & MANAGEMENT**

## **Organisation**

Camberwell Arts Limited is registered with the Charity Commission, number 1163039, and is constituted as a Company Limited by Guarantee (company number 04148321). The trustees administer the charity in accordance with its Constitution.

## **Appointment of trustees**

New trustees are selected from people who have the appropriate skills and resources to contribute to the affairs of the Charity. Skills audits are undertaken to inform this process, and to ensure an effective succession strategy is in place.

## **Trustee induction & training**

Upon appointment, each trustee receives in-house induction and training to acquaint them with: the charity and its activities; their obligations under charity law; Charity Commission guidance on public benefit; the content of the Constitution; decisionmaking processes; current policies and procedures; the recent financial performance of the charity.

**CAMBERWELL ARTS LIMITED INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT**

## **FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2023**

## **___________________________________________________________________**

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (Camberwell Arts Limited) for the year ended 31 March 2023, which are set out on page 8.

As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

- The accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or

- The accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or

- The accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
