The trustees present their report and accounts for the year from 1 August 2023 to 31 July 2024.
## **Structure, governance and management**
The charity was established under its constitution on 11 March 2009 and registered as a charity with the Charity Commission on 30 September 2010.

The appointment of trustees is set out in the Constitution.
The recruitment of new trustees is periodically undertaken by the Board, which follows an open and fair recruitment process taking due account of both the skills and needs of the charity and the desire for its membership to reflect the diversity of the local population.
The Charity and its property are managed and administered by a board of trustees, which can have between three and fifteen members.
The trustees have assessed the major risks to which the charity is exposed and are satisfied that systems are in place to mitigate exposure to the major risks.

## **Objectives and activities**
The Charity’s object are the promotion of community participation in healthy recreation by providing facilities for athletics.
The trustees have paid due regard to guidance issued by the Charity Commission in deciding what activities the charity should undertake.
Promotions and organisation of the annual Blaydon Race for some 4,800 senior competitors. This race is an established event in the North East.
## **Membership & Volunteers**
At the time of writing there are 254 members of Blaydon Harriers & AC, a 52% increase from the previous year. We have members ranging from 8 years old, learning the fundamentals of Athletics in our Induction group, through to members in their 70’s who not only train regularly but also compete nationally.
In addition, the Club now has 11 UKA coaches and leaders in running fitness, a 10% increase from the previous year. There are a further five members of the Club progressing towards UKA coaching qualifications and I would encourage other members to start their coaching journey. Growing the number of volunteers and coaches underpins our ability to increase the capacity of the Club and continue to provide high quality training for our members. The Club retains funding to support coach education and training.
Thanks to all our coaches and volunteers who have given up their time to support the Club during the year.
The committee continues to work hard to attract new members to the Club and is committed to providing affordable access to athletics. However, the cost of facilities hire will mean that the Club will run at an operational deficit and The Blaydon Race is critical to supporting the Club financially.
## **The Blaydon Race**
A successful Blaydon Race is key to supporting the aims of all at Blaydon Harrier & AC, that's to make athletics accessible and available to all in the local community. All at the Club would like to thank Isaac Dunn (Race Organiser), the supporting Race Advisory Group and the countless volunteer hours that have contributed to a successful race in 2024.
This is reflected in the positive feedback received from participants, club runners, sponsors, suppliers and key partners that support the race in going ahead at Gateshead Council, Newcastle Council & Northumbria Police.

## **Athletics achievements**
The past year has seen a number of achievements from athletes across all sections of the Club, this includes athletes representing the Club at national, regional and county competitions. Stories of these achievements are available on the Club’s social media pages.
Through this year the Club has fielded teams in the following competitions:
North East Youth Development League (NEYDL) - Combined team with Wallsend Harriers & Gosforth Harriers.
Northern Athletics Track & Field League - Finishing 3[rd] in North East Division 1 in the combined team with Elswick Harriers
North East Harrier League (NEHL) Cross Country with teams from the Club entered in all boys/girls and male/female divisions.
There are several individual results to celebrate, highlights include:
Dorren Craig – a successful season in the NEMAA Masters winning the F70 sprints grand prix, topped by golds in the F70 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m & Javelin at the NEMAA T&F Championship.
Kevin Findlay – who took the gold medal in the M40 800m & 1500m at the NEMAA T&F Championship and finished in 2[nd] place in the M40 NEMAA Masters middle distance league
Roselle Oberholzer – a successful season in the NEMAA Masters winning the F60 middle distance grand prix; in addition to age category performance wins at Blyth 10k and Great North 10k.
Ellie Fellows – 1[st] place Quayside 5k B Race, setting a new PB in the process and age category victory in The Blaydon Race 2024. Ellie also finished in 3[rd] place in NEHL Cross Country Grand Prix.
The Club had great representation at the ESAA National Cross-Country Championship at Pontefract with Ellie Fellows, Jacob Hendry, Jamie Lonergan and Robert Atkinson representing their counties. In addition, Ellie Fellows went on to represent the county at the Start Fitness Northern Cross Country Championships U17 Women.
These accolades have been achieved through the hard work and commitment of both our athletes and excellent coaches and as a club we hope to support them so that athletic achievements will continue well into 2024 and beyond.

## **Financial review**
The receipts and payments account on page 6 shows a surplus of receipts to payments of £23,612 for the year ended 31 July 2024.
It is the policy of the charity that unrestricted funds which have not been designated for a specific use should be maintained at a level equivalent to between three- and six-months’ expenditure. The trustees consider that reserves at this level will ensure that, in the event of a significant drop in funding, they will be able to continue the charity’s current activities while consideration is given to ways in which additional funds may be raised. This level of reserves has been maintained throughout the year.

## **TO THE TRUSTEES OF BLAYDON HARRIERS**
I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 July 2024 which are set out on pages 4 to 6.
## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not require for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
- (i) examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act;
- (ii) to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and
- (iii) to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of independent examiner’s report**
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
## **Independent examiner’s statement**
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
- (a) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
- (i) to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and
- (ii) to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act
- have not been met; or
- (b) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **1. Designated funds**
The club originally set aside the money invested in National Savings Certificates for the express purpose of establishing a permanent building for use as the Club’s headquarters and incorporating such facilities as the Trustees consider to be appropriate. The trustees agreed to allocate this fund also to assist for the relaying of the running track at Blaydon, which as at the date of signing, has been completed by Gateshead Council with no capital requirement from the Charity. However, continued use of the facility by the Charity will be charged at a significantly higher fee than previously paid. It is therefore the expectation of the trustees that any interest earned on the National Savings Certificates will be used to help contribute towards these increased track hire fees so to offset any potential increase in costs for the members. This will help the Charity to continue to provide accessible and affordable athletics coaching to its members. The originally established purpose of the funds set aside remains. The reserves may not be used for other purposes except at the Trustees’ discretion to deal with emergency situations.
