ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE Charitable activities
This year the trust’s activities have once again been constrained by Covid 19 and the lockdowns that have taken place as the schools were once again impacted. However, despite this the Trust was able to support a number of enrichment activities that the Schools were able produce for the benefit of the pupils.
The trust continues to attract regular standing order donations, one off donations and other donations via ParentPay and corporate matching gifts. However, as the lockdown progressed the standing order donations have been reduced due to the economic impact on many donors. Regular donations were down by almost 15% from before the pandemic. The funding from foundations also largely ceased as foundation focused on supporting Covid related charitable needs.
For all the schools (Secondary/6th form and 3 primary schools) the majority of unrestricted funds for the Foundation Trust come from standing orders (£100,335). The Foundation Trust also claimed £18,894 in Gift Aid for FYE 2018-2019. Gift Aid for FY 2019-20 and 2020-21 will be claimed in FYE 2022.
All the funds raised are restricted for use in the school for which they are raised. In FYE 2021 Funding for the Secondary and Sixth Form school amounted to £99,154 and for the primaries £29,905. We remain optimistic that the funding will grow once the pandemic and lockdown are over.
The Trust was able to enrich the education of the pupils during the year by providing a number of grants across the schools and a range of areas.
KNOWLEDGE SCHOOLS FOUNDATION TRUST
REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 AUGUST 2021
The area that has been a key focus for the Trust over the years, the co-curricular program, was again a key focus for the Trust this year with the Trust funding the excellent programme for the Secondary and Sixth form. The programme was successfully delivered despite the constraints of the pandemic and lockdowns. The school is to be congratulated in persevering with delivering the programme in all three terms under the difficult conditions.
The programme allowed students to pick from activities such as ones in the following areas with new ones such as Fencing, Textiles and Upcycling, Bertha Earth programme, Computer Science Club, National Theatre Connections Club and KS5 Basketball Club to be added in the future:
| LUNCHTIME CLUBS | MUSIC CLUBS | ACTIVITY CLUBS |
|---|---|---|
| Recreational Sports | Choir | Art |
| Board games | Orchestra | Ceramics |
| Book Club | Bands | Cheerleading |
| Gardening | Chess | |
| Lego | SPORTS | Climbing Club |
| Philosophy | Coding | |
| Basketball | Design | |
| ACADEMIC CLUBS | Football | Dramatic Dreams |
| Hockey | Kung Fu | |
| Ancient Greek | Netball | Robotics |
| Creative Writing | Rowing | Streetdance |
| Debating | Rugby | |
| History & Politics Society | Swimming | |
| Maths challenge | Table Tennis | |
| Maths Enrichment | Water polo |
In support of co-curricular activities the Trust funded 10 table tennis tables for use both inside and outside.
The trust also provided a grant to fund high specification computers for the Art department where they would be particularly useful for 6[th] form students on their A level projects. The Trust also agreed to fund art scholarships for two 6[th] form pupils in each year for 3 years, the first year of scholarships has been generously funded by the South Square Trust.
The Music department remained very active and the Foundation Trust funded the purchase of two trumpets as well as lessons on playing rare instruments that are primarily focused on students that could not otherwise afford to have them.
The Trust was also pleased to fund supporting the delivery of an educational assistance programme funded by an outside foundation in the summer of 2020, the Unifrog programme that assists pupils with planning and navigating their next step after 6[th] form or Secondary and participation in the First Give programme that will start in FY2022.
The pandemic and lockdowns placed the families of a number of pupils in hardship conditions both in the secondary and primary schools. In response to these conditions the Trust made a number of hardship grants to ensure that pupils would be able to cope with lockdown and pursue their education to their full ability.

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 AUGUST 2021
The Foundation Trust also made grants specifically for the benefit of the primary schools pupils. The largest grant went for computers for remote learning by pupils during the lock down. Grants to the primary schools also included keepsakes for leaving year 6 pupils and support of the bee keeper at Cambridge Gardens funded by a restricted source of funding.
The Foundation continued to have the benefit of a large grant made in FYE 2019 from Johnnie Boden and Julian Granville for the purpose of running three programmes of which the World of Work programme and the primary curriculum project (PKC) were still active in FY 2021.
FY 2021 was the third year of an initially envisaged 3 year programme to deliver The West London Free School World of Work (WoW) programme which is designed to improve the careers education provision throughout the school, with a particular focus on disadvantaged students. The programme includes:
-
teaching soft skills
-
Psychometric Testing
-
Work experience
-
One to One Career Guidance Interviews
While this third year of the programme has been again constrained by the lockdown restrictions, it again was very successful in delivering skills and benefits.
Due to the reduced programmes caused by the pandemic, not all of the WoW grant funds have been spent so that there will be funding available to extend the programme into a 4[th] and possibly a fifth year.
This year the Foundation Trust completed its funding of the Primary Knowledge Curriculum Partnership, (PKC) made possible from the Boden Granville grants. PKC develops and shares curriculum resources and expertise the primary schools have developed. The aims of the PKC Partnership are to:
-
Support schools to embed a coherent, carefully sequenced Knowledge-Rich Curriculum
-
Create a network of like-minded schools
-
Provide high-quality professional development to school leaders and teachers
-
Reduce teacher workload
PKC has developed extensive, knowledge-based materials in English, Science, History, Geography and Art. The curriculum development has progressed very well and the development of the materials and the sharing with other schools has exceeded expectations. The Boden-Granville grant helped make this great success possible.
The Foundation Trust is very grateful to Mr. Boden and Mr. Granville for making the very generous donations to make these grants possible.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 AUGUST 2021
1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES
Basis of preparing the financial statements
The financial statements of the charitable company, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Companies Act 2006. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.
The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the entity and is rounded to the nearest £.
Going concern
The COVID-19 viral pandemic is one of the most significant economic events for the UK with unprecedented levels of uncertainty of outcomes. It is therefore difficult to evaluate all of the potential implications on the charity's operations, funding, suppliers and wider economy. The Trustees' view on the impact of COVID-19 is that, given the measures that could be undertaken to mitigate the current adverse conditions and the current resources available, they can continue to adopt the going concern basis in preparing the financial statements.
Income
All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.
Expenditure
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
Taxation
The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities.
Fund accounting
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.
Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.
