## **Wamba Community Trust – Aims and Objectives**

- To promote the benefit of young people living in the Wamba district of Kenya, by:

   - the advancement of education

   - the prevention or relief of poverty

   - the promotion and preservation of good health

- To advance the life and relieve the needs of young people through the provision of education, support and activities which develop their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as mature and responsible individuals.

Wamba Community Trust was set up in 2005 and after 5 years of growth, registered with the Charity Commission in September 2010.

This small family run charity’s ethos is that all donations go directly to the people that need it most, the people of Wamba. We have no paid staff and no CEO, we don’t use your money just to run the charity like many do or to fund trips to Wamba.

- The projects use locally sourced materials, supporting local suppliers and avoiding import costs and duties.

- Local labour is used on all projects, supporting the local community and developing ownership.

## **My Visit to Wamba January 2025**

I was accompanied on my trip in January by 2 friends, Helen and Ali. They have listened to many stories of my trips to Wamba and how the charity is run, that they wanted to experience it for themselves. Read their reports below.

Prior to my visit I was delighted to receive football kits donated by Arsenal. I set up a football match to coinside with my trip between two women’s football teams in Wamba and was able to present a full kit to the winners, and jerseys to the runners up. It was a great game and so well supported. I felt immensely proud to be supporting Women’s

football in such a rural community and hope that more girls and young women will get involved.

Our big project for 2025 is to provide Human Rights Awareness Training for young women in Wamba to include Gender Based Violence. Asha, a previouly supported student of Wamba Community Trust put me in touch with members of Dove of Hope who are a community organisation in Wamba. She is a member of the group and they asked for our support to fund this awareness training that they would deliver. I met with Moses who runs the group to discuss plans and the budget and we hope to start the training in September 2025 and online meetings are ongoing.

I met with the new Chief of Wamba to discuss the charity and how we can work together for the benefit of the community. He is very supportive of girl’s education and our Human Rights Awareness Project. On my return from Wamba I received the following email from him:-

## _Dear Clare,_

_“I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for the outstanding work you have done—and continue to do—in supporting vulnerable girls and women in the Wamba community. Your unwavering dedication and passion are truly inspiring, and I am in awe of the profound impact your efforts have made._

_Today, I had the privilege of learning more about your organization, and I am genuinely amazed by the depth of your commitment and the positive change you are driving in our community. Your selfless service and relentless pursuit of empowerment for those in need are a beacon of hope and a source of inspiration to us all._

_Please know that your hard work does not go unnoticed. The lives you have touched and transformed are a testament to your incredible vision and tireless efforts. I am_

_truly honored to have had the opportunity to witness your work firsthand, and I am more motivated than ever to support and champion your cause._

_Once again, thank you for your remarkable contributions. May you continue to inspire and uplift those around you, and may your mission thrive for years to come._

_With utmost appreciation and respect,”_

_Joel Lenkupae Chief Wamba Location_

Our visit to Wamba Girls School to see the 6 girls supported by the charity was extra special this year as we were able to take over a meeting room and sit for an hour chatting about their lives, how they are getting

on in school and any worries or concerns they have. Having Helen and Ali there made it so much more informal, and the girls really opened up. I also met the 4 girls who finished in December 2024 and enrolled them onto a Computer Course

at Eclipse College in Wamba which will give them the skills they need to go on to further education.

## **Ali’s Report**

_After almost half a year planning and preparing for our big trip to Kenya, Helen and I were beyond excited with still no real clue about what on earth to expect...no amount of research could ever have prepared us!_

_We left Nairobi and drove North all day passing the lush slopes at the base of Mt Kenya, eventually leaving the tarmac and bumping our way across the Samburu plains to Wamba town. We felt like we were on safari before we even arrived, passing camels, donkeys pulling carts, antelopes sheltering under acacia trees and piles of elephant poo, but no elephants - yet!_

_Clare had balanced our itinerary perfectly making sure we didn't flake out on her; we spent every other day visiting Wamba Community Trust Projects and in between we climbed mountains, visited markets and sanctuaries, went on safari camp and enjoyed huge sunset walks._

_The charity focuses on improving the lives of girls and we luckily timed our arrival to coincide with a football match between two girls' teams which Clare has worked hard to establish. We joined the huge crowd of supporters and quickly became immersed in the community who were delightfully friendly and thankfully keen to practice their English!_

_The girls' football brings girls from different clans and schools together, giving them social and emotional support while helping to relax harsh gender barriers. Tearing myself away from my new friendly neighbours I eventually paid attention to the game and was intrigued by the skills and courage of the girls playing in bare feet, many in socks without trainers._

_All week Clare's three wonderful Wamba friends looked after us, giving us an authentic insite into their Samburu life. They taxied us all over Wamba, across the dessert plains and up and down the rugged local mountains on the backs of their motorbikes._

_Two local community workers presented an important project to us which aims to raise awareness about the negative impacts of gender based violence, child marriage and female genital mutilation. They propose to engage community leaders and stakeholders, and promote protective measures for women. Wamba Community Trust currently supports almost 40 girls who have escaped from situations like these and this project ultimately aims to directly tackle the problems many of these girls actually faced. We later discussed this project with the local Chief who validated it and confirmed his support for it. Fundraising is under way, with a target start date of September 2025._

_We visited the girls at Wamba school who are currently being sponsored by Wamba Community Trust and realised how important it is to give these girls opportunities to thrive and we witnessed their enthusiasm to bring back the knowledge they are gaining to their communities and run projects of their own._

_Among many other projects, we visited a water tap which to us, is seemingly modest but to them is a life changing asset. In 2012 Wamba Community Trust realised that so many women and children from the Margwe community had to walk such a long way to collect water. A dam was built and the water piped down the mountain to a holding tank and then piped to the tap. The locals were obviously hugely grateful, and proposed a further_

_project to extend the pipes to provide water to further families! Projects here are forever ongoing but the difference being made and the appreciation given is truly heart warming._

_What a trip! It is incredible how much we experienced, saw and understood...no amount of research could ever have prepared us!_

## **Helens Report**

_Arriving into a colourful, lush, vibrant city. Staying in a lodge where the night is still and sounds are muted. A quiet courtyard and a warm welcome comfy bed._

_Travelling for hours on dry dusty roads. A town of many villages start to appear, Wamba its known. Shouts of “Clare” “ciao” arms waving, faces smiling. Introductions everywhere. Hands reaching. Children laughing._

_Adventures follow, thick and fast. Baboons drinking, camels munching, snakes leaping. Orphaned elephants running, ears flapping, trumpeting, ready for feeding. Giraffes shaded still as can be. The scrape of a tongue and a head nuzzled into a palm._

_Schools visited, sad stories heard with optimism for endings with work. Market place bustling, deals being done. Books bought, uniforms ordered, business undertaken in the sun._

_A preschool is visited, singing and dancing. Classrooms full with children but repairs are needed. Renovation a goal with plaster and paint, artists required to redecorate._

_Womens football, passions run high. A dusty pitch. Bare footed kicks. The prize, a football kit to wear with pride. The closest of games, 1-0 was the score. The crowd are cheering, a round of applause._

_Camping with Hyrax, monkeys, baboons. Hyenas are laughing under the moon. A hike to the rock, where warriors stand, protecting their land. We cannot stay so an escort is planned._

_Back to the campsite with firepit blazing, dancing is shared, memories making. Samburu and Scar, an unlikely mix with smiles and laughter, a love of a beat._

_Breakfast is shared with a brave cheeky monkey, stealing the melon whilst sat down before us. Moving on forward to bustling markets where camels are traded and grain important._

_Meeting the chief and sharing of goals. Like-minds striving forward with enlightening plans. A promise of change, supporting the girls, the energy of youth with its wonderful zeal._

_A drive through a conservation whilst spotting a cheetah. Elephants, giraffes, a warthog and zebras. A childlike joy of wonder and awe, the beauty of nature strikes to the core._

## **Ruby Pre-School**

Following 3 years of severe droughts, the heaviest rains in 100 years caused devastation to the Wamba community in 2023 with many families displaced and buildings badly damaged. Ruby Pre-school was badly affected and we were able to provide funding to refurbish the school with a new concrete floor and paint the walls to bring them back to their once brightly painted condition full of murals aiding the children’s learning. The children’s desks had been badly damaged over the years by termites and after 13 years since we last purchased desks for the children, we were able to replace them all. We also bought desks for the growing number of teachers. They were all made in Wamba, so helping the local community and avoiding large transport costs. We also provided new uniforms, books, pens, crayons, food, and volunteer expenses.

## **How we Raised the Money**

Most of the money raised is from kind donations from friends and family and we couldn’t achieve what we do without their support. A very big thank you to all that have contributed.

I spend a great deal of my time applying to Trust Funds and Foundations and I am always delighted when applications are successful, and the Trustees can see the real benefit the money is making to the community of Wamba. A very big thank you to all that have granted funds.

We held a Fashion Show which was great fun and raised £1498, thank you to all my friends who modelled and helped make it such a success

It was so good to be back at Ashlyns School in Berkhamsted to deliver an assembly about Wamba Community Trust which is the 6th Forms Charity and has been since Edward Kinsella suggested it as Head Boy over 10 years ago. Amazing to receive a cheque for over £1,300.
