Wamba Community Trust – Aims and Objectives

Wamba Community Trust was set up in 2005 and after 5 years of growth, was registered with the Charity Commission in September 2010.

This small family run charity’s ethos is that all donations go directly to the people that need it most, the people of Wamba. We have no paid staff and no CEO, we don’t use your money just to run the charity like many do or to fund trips to Wamba.

Visits to Wamba October 2023 and February 2024

Two very successful but totally different visits to Wamba in the past year. Our first visit was at the end of a 3-year drought and just after we left, the heaviest rains for many years caused homes to be destroyed, families displaced, and flash

floods swept livestock and people to their deaths. On our second visit we saw Wamba as we have never seen it before. Everywhere was so green, many plants and flowers were flourishing and there was water in the river. Quite a contrast in just five months.

October 2023

During our visit in October, Ruby and Clare were able to be part of the second stage of our project Providing Sustainable Menstrual Kits and Education in Wamba .

Four schools remained with a total of 500 girls receiving the kits and education: St Teresa’s Secondary School and Milimani Primary within Wamba Town, and Silango and Sionta in very remote and isolated areas in the Wamba district.

Bernadette, the Health Ambassador from the Days for Girls Women’s Enterprise in Chumvi where the kits were made, delivered the sessions in a fun and informative way

encouraging the girls to ask questions and talk about experiences. Two students supported through education by Wamba Community Trust came along to volunteer on the project.

It was a privilege for us to be part of this stage of the project and a very proud moment to realise a dream of providing 2650 washable sustainable menstrual kits and education to the girls and young women of Wamba.

February 2024.

In February, Ruby and I were accompanied on our visit by my niece Rebecca and friend Lola. Both being very sporty and with Rebecca being a Personal Trainer, they wanted to have the opportunity to deliver PE sessions in some of the schools in Wamba. Sessions were set up for them in Ntepes Primary, Milimani Primary, Wamba Girls and a great training session with Wamba Womens football team. Rebecca and Lola planned the school sessions to include warm-ups, circuit training and relays and even some yoga delivered by Ruby. The sessions were so well received by all the students and really fun and enjoyable with lots of laughter. Some teachers commented that they had learnt new ways of delivering

sessions to their students in the future. The session with the Women’s football team included fitness training followed by a game where Rebecca, Lola and Ruby joined in. The team really appreciated the session, and, on my return, I sent the money to buy each player a pair of football boots (a lot were playing in bare feet or sandals) for their participation in The Governor’s Cup in Maralal in April where they came forth.

We were able to present football kits to all the schools and the women’s football team after the session's curtesy of KitAid. Rebecca and Lola totally embraced their time in Wamba and mixed in well

with all the community and it was a pleasure to be able to enable them to have such an amazing experience.

“Visiting Wamba was an amazing eye-opening experience that I will never forget, I got to see the way of life, the education system, its natural wildlife, and traditional food. Teaching P.E lessons in local schools was so rewarding, seeing the happiness from each child and how grateful they were for the smallest things. I have never visited Africa before this trip and now I will make sure it’s not my last. Wamba is a truly amazing place full of amazing people and hopefully I can come back in the future!” Lola Theodoulou

Empowering Girls and Young Women Through Education to Employment

We supported Christabell through Nursing College, and when we met up with her in October, she was volunteering at Wamba Hospital which is the best way of being selected for interview for any jobs which may come up. We bought her a phone to enable her to apply for jobs online and I was delighted to have a message from her on my return saying she has been successful in getting a job at Wamba Hospital.

We met with Maria at Wamba Mixed Day School after being told about her family situation from her cousin Antony (pictured with Maria). Maria is an orphan and is currently living with Antony’s family. Wamba Community Trust has agreed to support her through secondary and further education.

During our visit in February we met with three girls that we have taken on in our sponsorship programme. Liz was introduced to us by the Wamba Girls School Councillor. She had written a letter to the Councillor as she couldn’t explain in words how desperate she was for an education and how difficult her life has been. The school had allowed her to join to keep her safe, but she has a big balance of fees that needed paying. After we agreed to support her with her education, many tears of joy were shed, and we are sure she will make the most of this opportunity.

We also agreed to support Nancy who had been given admission to Wamba Girls after finishing primary school but had no one to support her with fees. Her results were excellent, and she had walked 5 miles in the scorching heat to wait all day at a lodge where she knew NGO workers stay when visiting Wamba, in the hope of finding a sponsor. We passed by to get a soda and the owner of the lodge introduced me to Nancy who told me her story and we agreed to support her as she showed great will and determination to further her education. The third girl we

agreed to support, Lilian, is an orphan as her mum recently died of breast cancer. We wish all three girls the best on their journey through education to employment - thats why Wamba Community Trust exists!

Great to meet with the eight girls we currently support at Wamba Girls, and Lina, Nasha and Maurine who have just finished at Wamba Mixed and have enrolled to do a computer course before going on to further education supported by Wamba Community Trust.

Report on our other Achievements this Financial Year

Provided food for the vulnerable project Bought PE kits for 30 children at Milimani primary school Bought Wamba Womens Football team boots & tracksuits for the coaches Bought phones for our volunteers in Wamba Bought shoes for Mayanni

Ruby Pre-School

Our support of Ruby Pre-school continues. We provided 2 supplies of food for the children, approximately 2 months supply of a meal per day when the Government failed to provide them with food, uniforms, books pencils & crayons. We also bought a phone for the Principle, Antonella to enable her to have better communication with us.

How we Raised the Money

Most of the money raised is from kind donations from friends and family and we couldn’t achieve what we do without their support. A very big thank you to all that have contributed.

I spend a great deal of my time applying to Trust Funds and Foundations and I am always delighted when applications are successful, and the Trustees can see the real benefit the money is making to the community of Wamba. A very big thank you to all that have granted funds.

We held a Fashion Show which was great fun and raised £2225, thank you to all my friends who modelled and helped make it such a success. I did a presentation to Newent Rotary Club who made a donation of £100. My Aunty Helen held a sponsored fundraising event with her piano students who raised an amazing £487. My wonderful friend Ngnaspat from Ross-on-Wye who was born in

Wamba donated £267 from her 40th birthday collection. My brother did a sponsored 108 mile bike ride with over 3500 meters of climbing and raised £1000. A really big thank you to all.

Such a wonderful thing to have a child named after you. This is me with Clare!

A very big thank you to them all.
