Minutes of the APCM on 26th May 2024

The minutes of the APCM held on Sunday 26[th] May 2024 had been circulated prior to the meeting and were duly agreed and signed.

Matters Arising from the Minutes

There were no matters arising from the minutes.

Election of Lay Members to the PCC

There were six vacancies and six nominations. The following were elected to the PCC to serve for a term of three years.

Jon Oliver’s term of office had expired and he no longer wished to stand for the PCC and Peter Handscombe had retired from being a PCC member. Fr David thanked both Jon and Peter for all the work they had done during their time on the PCC.

Parish Priest’s Report: The report was accepted. Fr David thanked all who help in any way, with a special thank you to Rev Wendy and Rev Lauren for their support. Bev raised the point that Neil Waite should also be thanked for all his hard work and Fr David agreed.

Fr David advised that he intends to retire in 2032 and we should start to plan for this and look at how we are going to grow in the next six years. The Deanery will also face challenges over the next few years as clergy retire or leave the area.

Church Wardens Report: The report was accepted.

PCC Secretary’s Report: The report was accepted. Peter Handscombe has resigned as PCC Secretary and Fr David thanked him for all his hard work during his time in office.

Treasurer’s Report: The report was accepted. There were no questions on the audited accounts for the year.

Beverley Howells proposed that we appoint Thornton Wallace as Independent Examiner for the forthcoming year and this was seconded by Pamela Draycott. All present were in agreement.

Safeguarding Report: The report was accepted. Carole Howes is resigning as Parish Safeguarding Officer and Carolyn McCallister will be taking over from her. Fr David thanked Carole for all her hard work over the last few years.

Deanery Synod Report: The report was accepted.

Electoral Roll Report: The report was accepted. Rev Wendy advised that since the closing date for the renewal of the Electoral Roll she had received more applications. These will be added to the Roll.

Messy Church Report: The report was accepted.

Coffee with Friends Report: The report was accepted. Fr David thanked Peter and Marion Handscombe for all their hard work in organising this event over many years.

St Luke’s Hospice Report: The report was accepted.

Lunch Club Report: The report was accepted. Jean and Peter Craggs are both resigning from July 2025 and Michelle and Allen Conroy will take over. Fr David thanked Jean and Peter for their hard work over the last six plus years.

Social Committee Report: The report was accepted. Fr David thanked all on the committee for the work they do.

Benefice Sewing Group Report: The report was accepted.

Knit & Natter Group Report: The report was accepted.

Annual Report United Benefice of Corringham and Fobbing 2026

Corringham – St Mary and St John

Dear Friends

Within our APCM report, you will find reports from the Officers of the PCC, the Clergy Team and from the variety of groups which operate within the Benefice, which reach out to our local community.

I personally appreciate the support of my colleagues, Rev Wendy and Rev Lauren, as we share ministry. Most especially as at the end of 2025, I was unable to meet my commitments due to health issues, I appreciate all that my colleagues did in covering my commitments. I would also like to thank everyone for the support I received from our wider church family.

Following our APCM last year, our elected Church Warden Mandy sadly died unexpectedly, which was both an incredible shock and a great loss. We continue to hold Mandy in our hearts and prayers. David continues to serve as Church Warden and this year did a sterling job on his own. Our Church Wardens play a key role in managing the building and ensuring we maintain our regular worship pattern and outreach to the wider community.

We have seen growth during this past year in our regular Sunday attendance which is excellent and we warmly welcome new members into our community. We face many challenges in this coming year as we continue to explore how we can evangelise and share our faith, whilst maintaining our outreach to the local community. We continue to have an excellent working relationship with Pr Bogdan and the Romanian Orthodox community with whom we share St John’s.

I thank all the officers of the PCC but most especially our Secretary and Treasurer. I wish to thank you all for your generosity, whether through regular giving or through the offering of your time and skills towards all our outreach projects. A huge thank you, to those who clean our churches, wash the linen, our serving team, to our organist, those who help maintain our grounds and all who do those jobs unseen, THANK YOU. We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without so many of you playing your part.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of you who worships with us, whether on a Sunday, midweek or through one of our Outreach projects, for being a part of our community.

I commend this report to you which gives you an overview of all the activities which take place throughout the year alongside our worship. Our accounts will also give you a picture of our financial position.

Curate’s Report

It is both a privilege and a pleasure to serve the people of St. Mary’s Church, and the wider community of Corringham.

Since being ordained to the priesthood on Saturday the 27[th ] of September 2025 and Presiding at my first Eucharist at St. Michael’s Church, Fobbing on Sunday the 28[th ] of September, due to the distinctive nature of priestly ministry, my duties both in church and within the wider Benefice and Deanery have grown.

My duties include but are not limited to:

Liturgical and Sacramental Ministry.

Call to Discipleship and Evangelism/Mission.

(Hopefully these courses will help us all grow in the Love of God. In the Bible Study particularly the hope is that we grow in love for God through God’s Holy word, Scripture).

Churchwardens Report

With the sad loss of Mandy so soon after last year’s APCM this year has been very different. Mandy’s contribution and dedication to the role as Churchwarden has been very much missed. Thank you to everyone who has helped and assisted in so many ways with minor maintenance, cleaning, gardening and general upkeep in St Mary’s and St John’s. Every task however small is a great contribution.

Fortunately, this year has not incurred any unplanned maintenance work. A faculty is being processed for an air conditioning unit in St John’s. The cost for this will be covered by the Romanian Church. Towards the end of the year during the high winds in October some of the inner ceiling collapsed and a crack appeared in one of the supporting arches. With no other damage to any other fittings, quotes and plans to replace the damaged ceiling and possibly insulate the ceiling more are being moved forward. St John’s kitchen also had a revamp with a new cooker, dishwasher and sink unit.

Routine inspections and maintenance have been undertaken at both St John’s and St Mary’s. St Mary’s had many visitors during the Corringham Festival in June. The tree lighting in St Mary’s churchyard with carols was also very well supported.

2025 also saw the appointment of a new architect following the retirement of our previous one. Our new architect is now covering all three churches of our Benefice. He came to assess the damage at St John’s and will during this coming year undertake the quinquennial for St Mary’s which has become slightly overdue in the changeover.

Treasurer’s Report 2025

Many thanks to everyone who contributed to our finances in 2025 - the individuals, those that run groups and those that are involved in Fund Raising. Also thanks to The Romanian Church and Playschool - without them we would fail to meet our obligations.

We were very fortunate this year to receive 2 legacies - one from Don & Beryl Cox and the other from Rosemary Hall. Although they will be sadly missed our coffers have been boosted.

As you can see from the accounts our Current Account looks far healthier than it did last year, however if you take off the legacies our income has decreased. If anyone has any ideas how to increase our income or lower our expenditure, please let me know.

The money in the Repair Fund has shown a slight increase from last year, however we will be having some serious expenditure in 2026.

The various groups remain similar to previous years. Messy Mass has shown an increase, However we will need to buy some new glasses and plates.

I would like to take this opportunity to say that I would like to give up being treasurer. I’m happy to continue in 2026 but would ideally like to have an assistant, then in 2027 the assistant could take over and I’ll help. By 2028 I can relinquish the job. Please let me know if you would be happy to take over - Thanks.

Remember without all of you we would not have a church.

Benefice Safeguarding Report 2026

In July 2025 the benefice was invited to use the Parish Safeguarding Dashboard – an online tool designed to help parishes monitor and manage their safeguarding responsibilities e.g. compliance with safeguarding policies, highlighting areas requiring attention and tasks that need completing. Since then, various sections have been worked through, ticking completed tasks and reaching level 3 (the final level) but there is still some considerable way to go before we will be fully compliant.

The Dashboard has highlighted various documents/polices that needed to be in place and were subsequently presented to and adopted by the PCC. These are:

Policy for Recruitment of Ex-Offenders

The Lone Working Document and Support/Supervision document

Social Media Use By PCCs guidance document

The Guide to Support for Victims & Survivors

Posters for where Victims and Survivors can find ongoing support

Fourteen DBS checks have been carried out since the last APCM. All but one of the PCC and all group leaders have now had DBS checks. Almost all the PCC and group leaders have completed Basic and Foundation Training. Most of the PCC and group leaders have up-to-date or newly completed Raising Awareness of Domestic Abuse training. There is still some outstanding Safer Recruitment training that needs to be completed.

The Benefice Safeguarding Statement and Policy has been reviewed and is displayed on all the church noticeboards.

Electoral Roll Report

As our Electoral Roll opened for revision this year on 22[nd] February there were 60 members on Roll. Following last year’s renewal, 6 members applied for inclusion after the deadline. We also sadly lost one member during the year.

During our time of revision, two applications were made making our current role 62.

Of these 35 are resident within the Parish and 27 are non-resident.

Deanery Synod Report

With our APCM being a little earlier than last year there have only been three Deanery Synod meetings this year. All meetings start with opening worship, an address from a visiting speaker and conclude with a business meeting which includes updates on Diocesan Synod and General Synod when appropriate. For each meeting there has been Parish representation.

Our first meeting in June was held here in St Mary’s Corringham. Our guest speaker was Mary Thorne, Education Advisor for Church of England Schools in the Diocese of London. Her Spiritual reflection on Radical Hospitality challenged us to reflect on how we all live out our daily lives.

Our next meeting in October was at Emmanuel Church in Chadwell. With the address being given by Hope UK, the focus was on challenges with Alcohol and drug dependency. From this meeting further dates are being planned to explore how as a Deanery we can be a more support.

Our third meeting was in January at St Margarets Stanford-Le-Hope. Led by Bishop Adam and Archdeacon Sue, the focus was on opening a conversation around how we as a deanery can plan for the future. Meetings are being arranged for incumbents, and a Parish Representative to further this conversation.

As a Deanery there was also representation at the Orsett Show. The Deanery as in previous years offered hospitality with Coffee, a time of Worship and opportunity for children’s activity.

St Luke’s Chaplaincy Report

Having the opportunity to spend time at St Lukes Hospice in Thurrock each week as volunteer Chaplain continues to be a time of comfort and support. Attending each Wednesday my time is spent listening and sharing with patients’ families and staff. Each week is different depending on support needed. There are times I have been called to visit at different times which is part of the commitment I made as I started the role.

The hospice has also been very flexible around the times I visit if I find I have to fulfil other commitments on Wednesdays. With the Thurrock Hospice becoming more established the offering of spiritual and emotional support has become an important part of the comfort provided in difficult times. With great respect for diverse beliefs and personal choice listening and meeting people where they are is crucial.

Alongside being with and being there for all, my commitment to statutory training has continued enabling me to integrate into hospice expectations and fulfil my role.

Messy Mass Report

Now in our twelfth year of meeting on the second Tuesday of every month in St Johns, Messy Church continues to be enjoyed by all who come to share.

Focussing on a specific theme as we share in crafts, games, challenges and fellowship enables all to gain understanding of bible stories, important characters and specific religious festivals. During the past year we have provided sessions on Lent, Matthias, Trinity, The two builders, The biggest Party ever, Creation our love and concern, Remembrance, Nativity, Peace and Jonah. Alongside these themes our Good Friday activity session is always very popular as Easter gardens are individually made and the Easter Garden for St Mary’s Church is created.

All enjoy the story and prayer space before enjoying a meal together. The dedication and commitment of all who give of their time to provide and supervise food and activities is very much appreciated. All at Messy Church will be forever grateful for the love care and support Mandy gave to helping with the food and welcoming each month. She will continue to be remembered by all who have been part of Messy Church.

With food fellowship and fun continuing to be part of every session Messy Church will continue to be provided as a welcome for families to share together.

Social Committee Report 2025

Events held during the year were: - a Quiz Night, the Old Corringham Festival, (a joint event with The Bull), Autumn Fayre, a Christmas Draw, Corringham Christmas Market with the Bull, and a concert by Mosaic. Very few people attended the Autumn Fayre, so we don’t plan to have another one in 2026. The two events in conjunction with the Bull were very successful and will be held again in 2026.

The events are primarily social events but not necessarily fund raising, they all made a profit for the benefit of the church.

We are always looking for new ideas for events and help to run them. If you would like to help in any way, please see anyone on the Social Committee: - Bev Howells, Victoria Thompson, Peter Craggs or Carol Webb.

Lunch Club Report 2024 – 2025

At the end of July we said goodbye to Jean and Peter, as they decided to “retire” from running the Lunch club. A collection was made and gifts were presented. Thank you to both Jean and Peter for your hard work......we have a hard act to follow!

The Lunch club started again in September with an average 50 people attending each month. The meals are now cooked by Allen and myself, but mainly Allen!

In December we had our Christmas lunch with a local man singing. It was a lovely afternoon and everyone enjoyed the afternoon.

Each month we average 50 people which is great. Allen and myself wish to thank Judi, for help in fetching and carrying before the meal day starts!

We wish also to thank Neil and Adrian for their help in putting the tables and chairs out and clearing them away afterwards. Also for carrying the hot food into the hall to help Allen. Also thanking Dawn Leeder, Brenda Scott, Brenda Bragg and Dawn Roots for their help with serving the food. Judi and June for making tea/coffee. For Carol assisting collecting the meals, for those who cannot. To Marion Hunting for collecting the money and for John Hunting helping out with the activities. Thanks to Linda for sweeping the hall at the end of the afternoon and to Fr David, for helping with dishwasher duties! Without all this help, it would be extremely hard work. Thank you all. Many hands make light work!

Walsingham Report

On Friday 16th May 2025 we attended our annual pilgrimage to the Holy Shrine of Walsingham. Nine pilgrims from the United Benefice of Corringham and Fobbing, this included Fr David, Rev Wendy and Rev Lauren. We were blessed with the company of Florence, Rev Lauren's five year old daughter. Lovely to have so young a child with us. We were fortunate with the weather and were able to do the parade around the shrine's garden walking with our candles as we sang Ava Maria. We all attended the healing service with water from the well and holy oil for those anointed. Some pilgrims joined Fr David walking to the slipper Chapel, whilst others worshipped in the shrines Holy House and some of us spent far too much in the Shrine shop and market shop!! This year, as a first, we stayed for an excellent Sunday lunch after attending local parish church. Unable to go by bus to Wells this time as we only had two night in Walsingham but a very peaceful and special time was had by all. So far, no arrangements have been made for this year. Many thanks to Fr David, Rev Wendy and Rev Lauren for all your hard work and Church Warden, David Mott for all his driving and help.

Benefice Sewing Group Report

Our Sewing Group launches into Year 3. Our members have really enjoyed their projects and have taken them on with enthusiasm. Christian Care Homes have had over 130 pinnies for their residents, and say a huge thank you.

St Michael's Fetes and Bazaars have benefited from seasonally themed aprons, Christmas Stockings, beautiful flower arrangements, peg hangers, heat pillows. We have some very talented, experienced, and imaginative members. However, sewing is not the only thing in progress! There is plenty of chat, tea/coffee and cake. We have a group of members just in for a chat and a hello. It is great fun. So if you would like to come along on the second Wednesday of the month from 10.30 a.m. at St Michaels, you will receive a warm welcome.

Jigsaw Day Annual Report 2025-26

Back in September we had our 60[th] Jigsaw Day at Gardner Hall. I think it’s fair to say we have a very loyal band of puzzlers (i.e. dissectologists!) who come to the monthly get together. Most months we make use of all the tables we have room for and groups vary from those who prefer to do their own puzzle to those groups of 2 or 3 who like to work together and have a chat at the same time.

We celebrated our 60[th] anniversary with lots of cakes (some with a jigsaw theme) and a special Jigsaw song written by Christine. We all sang the words to the tune ‘Money, money, money’. If you can remember how the verses go, here’s one to try and sing along to in your head:-

We are still sticking to the same format so that jigsaws take centre stage alongside enjoying the company of others. Cakes and bacon rolls are definitely important elements too! Once again we must thank Carolyn McAllister for providing us with a delicious cake every month and Rosalyn Jones for coming to every session to help with the refreshments. She also stores all the jigsaws in her garage which is definitely a hidden asset we couldn’t manage without.

Knit & Natter Report 2025/26

We currently have 20 members, 14 resident in Fobbing and 6 from Corringham. This year is the 10th anniversary of the group in March and we are using one of our sessions 9th March to have lunch together and celebrate.

Some of the projects we've worked on this year include knitted and crocheted angels for Christmas. We did over 30 white angels which we hid in the Church and the Pre school came across and hunted them down. All the children went home with an angel and we had some lovely comments. In addition to that we produced over 100 angels in assorted colours which were hidden across the village for residents to find.

For Easter 2025 we knitted the Last Supper and one of our members, Branka, made a lovely miniature polished table to sit the figures around. These will be back on display this Easter.

We continue to make squares which Diane, another of our members crochets together, approx 3 blankets a week. We also continue to add to the supplies of Baptism shawls and bootees for the whole Benefice. Some members continue to make baby hats for Basildon Hospital Maternity Unit and others make scarves for Seaman which go to the Seaman's mission in Tilbury.

2 unique projects came our way during 2025. Firstly some members contributed to the Easter Boxes put together by 100 club members by knitting dozens of little yellow chicks. The other project was further afield as we contributed to the knitted poppies on Southend Pier. The group name was added to a plaque on the pier railings.

All in all a busy year. We are currently planning projects for this year. Our current meeting times are Mondays 1 -3.30pm. In St Michal’s.

Little Feet Report

The Little Feet group meet once each month. We usually look at the Gospel story for the day and have an associated activity. There is only usually 3/4 children but they do enjoy this time together.
