Ove￿ieW of the Yeor
The Year continued with COVID-19 restriction5', St Mary's wa5 the only Church wlthin our Deanery
to remain open for the first four months of the year. Three sunday Services were made available
8am, 9..30am, 11am following Churth guidelines regarding the Covid restrictions. All occasional
services were able to continue, but with lirnited numbers. By late Summer we were able to resume
singing on Sunday mornings and resume Singing with a Choir with our new Church or8anist.
Unfortunatèly, by December again re5triction5 to sing were put in place. We arè most grateful to
our members fortheir help and support by complying with these legal restrictions m05t of which
remained in place at the end of the year. As part of our Dutreach we resumed the Friendship lunch
and begèn to offer weekly coffÈÈ mornings on a Thursday.
Attendunce or worship
The church family welcomÈs visltors from in and outside the parish. All attend by personal choice
and it is our great pleasure to welcome ihose from all walks of life and we contend that thi5
voluntary 3ttènd3nce to worship the Lord Jesus Christ is major public benefit. Unfortunately, the
year began with Covid restrictions. In view of the restriction'5 numbers allowed at serwices, these
have continued until May. The p8ttern of worship in church was 8 am, 9..30am, and 11am on
Sundays and midweek service5 on Wednesday and Thurs(tay 10am. The Church remained open
daily for private prayer and reflection.
From May to early December, all Services continued 35 norrnal, until December restrictions by
government guldelines on large publlc worship meant that the addition31 Christmas services had to
be cancelled, onlythe Eucharist 5erviies continued.
As the year pro8re55ed the averagÈ weekly attendance did incie35e and by the 5umrner has
remained consistent. The average count during October was 59, which was virrually the Same as
last year and the number of members on the elertoral role Increèsed by 2 to 122.
All of the special servlce5 aSSOC13ted with the church festivals were 50 seriously affected by the
pandemic rule5 that none were possible.
Teaching, boptising ¢Tndnurturlng rjewondexisting believers
The 2 study groups set out in the new year with well-prepared plans, in private houses, and this
remained the p051tion 3t the end of the year. We celebrated 4 baptisms and 4 Weddin8s. 10 Church
funerals, 5 Crematorium Funerals and 2 Memorial serwices, 6 interment of Ashes.
We are pleasèd the church can be open again so that all can enjoy rts peacefulness and sense of
history thanks to the12th and 13th century wall paintings once a88in.

Provision of Chtsrchfocilities
The Ihurch hall ha5 been alfected in the Same way with most of the clubs using it deciding that
social distancing imposed In March 2020 mèdÈ meeting5 Imprattiial. The Friendship lunch wa5 held
in Sepiember and October Stopped to Covid restriciion5. Contact was kept during the rest of
the year and the te3m delivered during Decembèr a pack of mince pies they had made to add some
Christrn35 cheer to those on their own. A weekly coffee morning began on Thursday5, 3gain this

Financial Review
Incomlng ondoutgoing ￿soUrCeS
The total receipts on general unrestricted funds werè £83,706 and arè detailed in the Financial
Report. Thi5 15 an over311 decrease of £27.085 compared with 2020. Regular 8ivin8s were up £643.
howeverthere wa5 a reduttion of more th3n £IO,OQO in the tot?1 received in 3d-hoc donations, and
the amount received in lesacy allocated to general unrestricted funds wa5 also lower.
The PCC was very grateful to receive a le8ac¥ of £10,000 frcm the estate of Gillian Diana Holidavp
who lived in the village for a number of years and enjoyed the church. In accordancè with PCC
policy relating to unrestricted legacies this sum was dividÈd equally between the General and
Restoration Funds.
Shoring the ministry C95ts of the Diocese o[Chiche5ter
The largest expenditure of the PCCwa5 the 5uYn of £66.950 paid to the diocese for our share of èll
churches, Parish Ministry Costs. This PMC coversthe housin8, Stipend and pension ¢0st5 of the
Ilergy, 3nd a standard sum for diocesan central costs, clerEY tralnin8 and a tontribution to nationa1
church fund5. It is 3150 important to note that ?pproximately 80% of the PMC relates directly to the
clergy costs of this parish, the remainder being the shared costs of the Christian family throughout
the whc>le Church of England. including helpin8 churches le55 able to manage than ourselves.
Staff costs
The PCC pays for a Secretary to 355i5t the Rector in the church office located at thÈ Rectory.
cleaner for the church hall and new vestry and 3n org4ni5t. Further details are provided in the notes
to the accounts.
Trustee pfjyments andexpenses
We pÈy Cauniil. Water, and Environmental rates for thè Rectory and electricity to heat the parlsh
office. Mr5 Brenda Bull, who is also a trustee, received £3,60Dfor d￿leS as parish Secretary. There
were no other payment5 to persons related to or connected to the current trustees.
Repairs to thelobricof the church building
No major work wa5 carried out during the yearto eitherthe Church or Church Hall during 2021.
Why we hold some money in reserve
It has been PCC policy to maintain 3 balance on the general unrestricted fund5 (excluding property)
which eqvates to approximatÈlythree rnonths, worth of unrestrlcted payments as £ontin¥enry
agalnst unforeseen sltuations. The impact of CDvid as forced careful consideration of future
finances ènd a reserve of about 6 months 1ncome will bp retained. As we face significant repair
costs to the buildings which are our responsibility, part of the reserve will be held in a Designated
Building Fund. The closin8 balance of this year 15 in line with this policy.
It is PCC policy to invest surplus funds with the C8F Church of England deposlt fund. returning
proportionatelythese funds to our current Èttount, a5 they are needed, to pèy lar8er bill5.

As well as holdin8 the atsove general resetves, from rime to lirne the PCC receives ￿$trIcted
le8acies for expenditure on purposes defined by the donor. We Bim to expend such money 3$ soon
as possible after receiving thè legacy, depending on the spÉcific objectives of the donor. Where we
have identified that the spècific purpose can only bè achieved by delayingthe expenditure, we
Invest the legacy temporarily until such time as the need for appropriate expenditure is identified.
Footnote
Our report above sets out a valuable 5UPPOrt ro the parish during 3 yearof Significant changes in
individual freedoms and we would wish to rhank our Rector, Church Wèrden5, and PCC Officer5 for
the way they have steered us through thi5 year with many changes to the règulations. Also. a thank
vou to our members for their steady support In spite of the ever-changing situation and Into the
forthcoming year. Thank you.
