3. Revlew of Wesley Churth Centre Ufe: l# September 2023 to 31° Auwst 2024
3.1 Sunday Worshlp, WeekdayArtivhles and ChU￿h Llfe
Weslevs membership as of I September 2024 was 117. Sunday morning worshlp contlnued throughout the year
in a hybrid fomiat l.e. worshlp in the building together online participatlon by Zoom. In the course of the year
the average number of people attendlng worship remained consstent. Weslevs junlor Church I'SPLATI'I met
occasionally durin8 the year, although numbers continued to reduce.
Wesley Is a member of thè national Inclusrve Church Networt preachEs a strong message of inclusion and extends
welcome to all. An ecumenical 'Open Table. monthly Sunday evenin8 communlon servlce for the LGYTQIA+
community and thelr supporters continued throughout the year. In August 2024 the first same Sex marriage was
celebrated at Wesley.

3.2 Centre Actlvltles
32.1 To Open the Wesley Churth Centre as a Resource for All
Wesley continued to be valued as a placeof hospitslitywhere conversatlon is alway5 POS5ible and wherefriendshlps
Can be made.
The Café run by Wesley Coffee Bar (We51e￿$ related Ilmited by guarantee. company) continued to be the heart of
Weslevs 'Open Doorf. Tuesday to Saturday. The FairTrade Shop njn by Chester Fair Trading Limited also played an
important part In Wesley's community outreach and offering to visitors. Wesley is a Fair Trade Church. so Is
commrtteé to uslng frdirtrade goods wherever reasonab￿ practlcable.
The number of people coming into the building durlngthe w8ek and those attending events has steadlly Increased.
The Centre has been used by a wide range of organlsatlons and community groups for many years; and during the
year the numkr of letdngs has also gradually increased.
3.2.2 To Encoura8e and En¥a8e wlth PeWe BeyoThl Our Fellowsh1￿5 Marylns
'Music at Weslev once a8aln ran 45 Tuesday lunthtime concerts between eady September and mld July. together
with 10 Saturday organ events and recitals and l evenlng orchestral concert in the year. The average concert
attendance thls year rose to 115. Wesleywas alsothe venue for concertsgiven bythe Chester Bach Slngers, Chester
Festival Chorus and an Icelandlc choir.
Two plays were a150 performed at Wesley durlng the year to large and appreciative audiences: The Mistake, by
Mlchael Mears about the Hiroshlma atomic bomb In September2023 and The Beloved Son, by Murraywatts about
the Ilfe of Henri Nouwen. performed by Andy Harrison. in May 2024.
Community Bread Maklng sesslons continued on Mondaysi o￿anISed by the c04)perative social enterprise'Bread
Togetherf. in partnership with Wesley. As well as making bread these Sessions provide much-valued opportunitles
for people to rneet and build confidents, not least for those with a range of needs. On a number of Wednesdays In
the year addit*Jnal breadmaking sessions were held for a 5UPPOrt group for autlsticlneurodiverse adults.
The Wesley Crèche sessions continued on Thursday and Frfday mornlngs. together with a Wesley run parent &
toddler group on Wednesday mornings.
3.2.3 To Mak• New Relationships wlth Indmduals, Groups and (kianlsatlons
Meet-up sessions for Ukrainian guests taking refuge from the war in Ukraine and thelr local hosts contlnued at
Wesley monthly on Saturday aftemoons untll Febnjary. The sessions were run by Wesley volunteers and Included
the provisbn of refreshments. clothin& and tThletries a5 well as craft actfvlties ft)rthe adults. games forthe children
and an opportunlty to meet and make COnnect￿)ns. Art classes and Ukralnian language classe5 for young chlldren
ran for a few weeks longer. Ukralnian charityfundraislng events tc4)k place in October, December and August. The
needs of Ukralnian refugees have changed since this work Ilrst began. The Wesley community has continued to be
In touch with Ukrainian friends and has 5UPPOrted dlfferent Inltlatives as a slgn of our commhment to them.

3.3 Churth Premlse$
A new licence (agreed in August 20231 was completed in september with the Trustees for Methodist Church
Purposes and Cheshire West and Chester Councll, for a period of up to 3 years commencing on 14" August 2023.
The licence pemiits the continued presence and use of the scaffolding e￿rted in 2020 behind the ehurth to support
the collapsed sectSon of the city walls, to carry the diverted clty walls walkA¥ay and to facllltate the essentlal clty
walls repalr.
In June Wesley Church Councll approved a £48,4CKI project to install solar panels on the south faclng section of
worship area roof togethèr with bdttery storage, and to replace the Church Centre windows fronting Stlohn Street
wlth double glazed windows.
In addition to general repairs and regular equlpment servicin& the followin8 prolects were carrled out durfng the
year,,
Extemal redecoratlon of the Wesley Church and Church Centre frontage to St John Street.
Completion of the replacement of all regulady used light flttings in the Church Centre with LED lightln8.
Insulation improvements made to the crèche room ceiling and boiler room fittings.
Wesley achleved the A Rotha UK Silver Eco Church Award on 30 January 2024. b￿ed on the work spearheaded by
Weslevs Eco Group.
4. Future Plans
Full implementation of the solar panelldouble glazlng Improvement project is the maln property prlority for
2024125.
Having achieved the 511ver award In 2023124 we are continuing to work towards the achievement of a gold award
from the A Rocha organisation as an Eco Church. and are hoping to become a recognised 'Church of Sanctuarf In
2024125.
Following the 'Shaping our Future, consultation, a number of areas for further exploration and developrnent were
identified,. and in 2024125 we wlll be trfalling some new initiatives to addrEss these.
5. Concluslon
We have been pleased to see a consolidation of attendantes. both in worship and in mldweek artivitles, durlng the
year. We continue to look for and develop partnership5 Wtth other churches and organisatlons in the c1ty and
beyond, and hope in the course of 2024125 to discern further priorities for creatfve and sustalnable m155ion.

ond ReportlAo by Choiyties.. Statsment of Recommended Prnth'ce (Charttles SORP (FRS102J). The accounts
relate to the Church and its various organlsatlons and its wholly owned subsidiary and related company.
Its related company is Wesley Coffee Bar. a company limited by guarantee. which operates a cafe on the
Wesley Methodist Church premises. its directors are appointed by Wesley Methodlst Church Councll and
ultlmate control lies with the Mana8in8 Trustees of Wesley Mdhodist Church.
These accounts have been prepared on the basis of hi5torlcal cost except that fixed assets are shown at
valuatlon or cost of acquisitlon less accumulated depreuation and investments are shown at thelr market
valuè atthe end of the year. The accruals basis has been used and the Trustees present accounts that show
a true and falr view of the Church's financial posltlon and artiwtles. The accounts have been prepared on a
going concern basis.

used these are based on experience. researth and judgement. The accounts are expressed In Pound

The Trustees for Methodist Church Purwses are custodian trustse for the church land and premlses, whlch
Is a Model Trust property. and they hold the freehold t￿e.
The Tru5tee5 of Wesley Methodjst Church. Chester p)licy is to value the freehold property on the basis of
a market valuation, prepared by an independent chartered surveyor and to base value the organ on the
lower of Its hlstorlc purchase cost or net realisable value. A market valuation was undertaken by SaMIIs
which valued the freehold property at £750.(KX). The value of the organ was re-stated In 2017118 to a
hlstorlc purchase cost as this also equated to net realIsa￿e value. Flxtures, Fittings and Eoulpment
Individuilly c05ting more than £5.(KK) are now capitali5ed and wrtien uff on a straight4ine ba515 over the
useful life of the asset. The useftil live5 will depend on the nature of the asset acquired. The consolidated
financial statements reflectthe assets owned byWe51eyCoffee Bar. Thedepreciation 5)oliw is shown within
the separate accounts for Wesley C(rffee Bar.

The investments are in monetary assets and are held by the Trustee5 for Methodlst Church Purp05e5
ITMCPI as Custodian trustees. The valuatlons. at marketvalue, arethose provided byTMCP. The unreali5ed
gains arlslng on Investments at the end of the year are shown in the SOFA and in Note 19 below.
