REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 SEPTEMBER 2020

The Trustees have pleasure in submitting the Report and Accounts for the year.

Objects of the charity

iThemba is a Christian organisation. Its objectivess are designed to support the community, churches and people within the regions it operates. These objectives are as follows:

1) To advance the education of people in Africa, in particular those living in Sweetwaters, South Africa (the area of benefit), through the provision of educational facilities and materials and the provision of grants to other charities or organisations working to advance the education of people living in the area of benefit.

2) To act as a resource for children and young people living in the area of benefit by providing advice and assistance and organising programmes of physical, educational and other activities as a means of:

a. advancing in life and helping young people by developing their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as independent, mature and responsible individuals;

d. providing recreational and leisure time activity in the interests of social welfare for people living in the area of benefit who have need by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disability, poverty or social and economic circumstances with a view to improving the conditions of life of such persons.

3) Such charitable purposes for the benefit of people living in the area of benefit as are exclusively charitable according to the laws of England and Wales as the trustees may from time to time determine.

Government

Structure, Governance and Management

During the past 3 years iThemba Hope Trust has registered as a Trust and as a charity limited by guarantee. The charity was registered on 31st August 2010.

The Trustees are still in the process of firming up the trusts internal governance policies. These will be a key focus in the coming financial year.

Governing Document

The charity is governed by the Memorandum and Articles of Association. Taken together these documents set out the formal structure and organisation of the Charity, how it generally manages its affairs and how it will comply with the requirements of the Companies Act 1985 as a company limited by guarantee.

Review of Activities

In this period, Ithemba Hope Trust UK funded a number of projects that demonstrated its principles of Christian faith supporting local communities including mentoring, running clubs, teen camps and early childhood education programmes. These projects, including building of education establishments have developed the church, and its peoples, relationship with the community and how it demonstrates its commitment to the region of Sweetwater.

In planning the activities the Trustees have applied the guidance on public benefit issued by the Charity Commission in December 2008.

Financial Review

Income

Donations received for the 2019/20 financial year totalled £27,399 - this was (£5,160) less than in 2018/19 £32,559. The main factors for this decrease were the reduced donations from Individuals (£10,556), Gift Aid (£4,875) and Events (£2,541) - as per Note 2. These reductions were partly offset by the additional income received from Trusts (£14,449).

The reason for the reduction in Gift Aid was due to the fact that no claim was made in 2019/20. There were also no events that took place in 2019/20 which led to no income being raised in this area.

A fundraiser was used by iThemba Projects in South Africa to investigate funding opportunities in the UK for South African projects. This resulted in £14,449 being received from Allan & Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust. The cost of the fundraiser was about £570 and was covered by the portion of general costs sent as part of the grants to iThemba Projects (see below).

Expenditure

In 2019/20 expenditure decreased slighty by (£1,961) to £29,295 from £31,256 in 2018/19. This was mostly related to grants going from £30,000 to £29,000, while direct costs saw a decrease from £1,256 to £295.

Grants of £29,000 were made to iThemba Projects in Sweetwaters, South Africa, with the majority going to the following projects: Mentoring (£6,542); Food Gardens (£14,105) and Covid-19 (£3,396). Part of the grants (£3,744) was towards general costs.

The Food Gardens project seeks to address both nutritional issues and environmental education of children in Sweetwaters. While the Mentoring project focuses on children mentoring and teenager leadership development. The funds for Covid-19 were, amongst other things, for sustainable nutrition in Sweetwaters due to the issues caused by the pandemic.

The direct costs were mainly for the payment of an independent examination (£210) due to the requirement of the Charitable Commission for all charities earning more than £25,000 in the year. The remainder related to bank charges and for online services.

Trustees' Responsibilities

Charity law requires us as Trustees to prepare financial statements for each accounting year which record the receipts and payments of the charity for the year.

We are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable us to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011.

We also have a responsibility to safeguard the assets of the charity and to take reasonable steps to prevent fraud or any other irregularities.
