## **Chairman’s Introduction**
Today I am writing an introduction like never before, we found ourselves in a perfect business storm that appeared very quickly, which would go on to effect our business and the world severely. Never have we witnessed a situation that would affect so many businesses all at the same time. This resulted in Safe Haven having to cease trading temporarily and relocate its operations. Unfortunately we had to lay off our beloved employees due to that fact we could not trade.
Safe Haven closed its business facility and went into a suspended hibernation until it could find new premises that would allow it to redirect and carry on. We managed to locate new business premises that took nearly a year to find. The full impact can be seen in our financial accounts for this period.
It’s been Safe Haven’s privilege to be of service. We will keep going and re-establish
ourselves. In life we live by faith and not by sight.
_Therefore, having been justified by faith, [a]we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces [b]perseverance; and perseverance, [c]character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us._ (Romans Chapter 5 v’s 1-5 NKJV)
We believe we have been called to serve the people of this beautiful and amazing country / world and we will keep believing and carry on.

## **Objectives & Activities**
Safe Haven is striving to comply with its legal obligations stated in its governing document. Safe Haven is a charitable trust which was registered on the 21st August 2010 to help alleviate the needs of people living in the City of Leeds. A summary of our objectives are:-
Relief of Financial Hardship - In the past, the courts have tended to define ‘poverty’ by reference to financial hardship or lack of material things but, in current social and economic circumstances, poverty includes many disadvantages and difficulties arising from, or which cause, the lack of financial or material resources. It can affect individuals, families and whole communities.
The prevention or relief of poverty is not just about giving financial assistance to people who lack money; Not everyone who is in financial hardship is necessarily poor, but it may still be charitable to relieve their financial hardship under the description of purposes relating to ‘the relief of those in need by reason of youth, age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantages.
The relief of the physical and mental sickness of persons in need by the provision of counselling and support within the City of Leeds. The cross-government definition of domestic violence and abuse is: any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. The abuse can encompass, but is not limited to: psychological, physical, sexual, financial, emotional.
The advancement of the Christian Religion according to the teachings of Jesus Christ by providing a place of worship one is able to carry out devotional acts. These teachings demonstrate a beneficial, moral or ethical framework to live by. We believe that by showing veneration of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and God the Father a believer is able to love everyone.
The advancement of citizenship or community development - covers a broad group of charitable purposes directed towards support for social and community infrastructure which is focussed on those in need, by reason of youth, age, ill-health, disability looking to the community rather than the individual. The promotion of civic responsibility and good citizenship, the promotion of urban and rural regeneration, the promotion of volunteering, the promotion of the voluntary sector, promoting the efficiency and effectiveness of charities and the effective use of charitable resources, the promotion of community capacity building concerned with social investment.
The Charity is vehemently opposed to the use of slavery in all forms; cruel, inhuman or degrading punishments; and any attempt to control or reduce freedom of thought, conscience and religion. “To promote human rights (as set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and subsequent United Nations conventions and declarations) throughout the world by all or any of the following means: Monitoring abuses of human rights, obtaining redress for the victims of human rights abuse, relieving need among the victims of human rights abuse, research into human rights issues, providing technical advice to government and others on human rights matters, contributing to the sound administration of human rights law, commenting on proposed human rights legislation, raising awareness of human rights issues, promoting public support for human rights, promoting respect for human rights among individuals and corporations, international advocacy of human rights and eliminating infringements of human rights.
In furtherance of that object but not otherwise, the trustees shall have power to engage in political activity provided that the trustees are satisfied that the proposed activities will further the

purposes of the charity to an extent justified by the resources committed and the activity is not the dominant means by which the charity carried out its objects.”
The promotion of equality and diversity for the benefit of the public is a charitable purpose. The Charity will promote equality and diversity for the public benefit by: Promoting the equality of women with men, promoting of racial and religious harmony, the elimination of discrimination on the grounds of race, gender, disability , sexual orientation or religion, advancing education and raising awareness in equality and diversity, promoting activities to foster understanding between people from diverse backgrounds.
Such charitable purposes for the public benefit - as are exclusively charitable according to the laws of England and Wales as the trustees may from time to time determine.
The main activities undertaken in relation to these purposes shall be the over arching guide to our commitment to the people it is serving and in compliance with our trust deed.

## **Fellowship**
We had to reduce our aims this year in-regards to “establish various groups” this was due to the fact that we closed our business and relocated to another area. Without the ability to trade we couldn’t effectively participate in the community.
## **Friendships**
We did manage to make individual / organisational connections with various groups once we located into new premises. However, this was in the final quarter of our financial year. We hope that these new friendships will grow and develop over the foreseeable future.
## **Charitable Giving**
Our targeted giving that was envisaged for the coming year changed once the decision to close and relocate was taken. These can be seen in the reduced figures in the strategic development section of the report.
## **Training**
We suspended the development of in-house processes for a large part of the financial year due to relocation but started to look into this area at the back end of the trading cycle. We realised that we would have to redirect our effort into new areas. This was due to the fact we moved from our warehouse facility into a church building.

## **Performance Indicators**
## **Financial Review**
Financial strategies and business decisions have reshaped the business, from the Board of Trustees to volunteers, each member of the team have put the needs of the community at the forefront of our activities. For a breakdown of statistical data please see our accounts.
## **Strategic Development**
In accordance with the Board of Trustees directives and in unison with our four stated aims the Administration Team implemented and applied diligence for both the charity and its recipients. This was achieved in the following areas
- Two van loads of new kitchenware donated to a local charity in Leeds. Projected estimated value would have been around £11,000
- Metal display racking system donated to individuals in need.
- Business model changed due to relocation so our intended four aims had to be reassessed and redeveloped to meet changing needs. All charity activities suspended for most of the financial year.
- Counselling service did operate for around a third of the year then it closed. This was a free service provided to the local community but paid for by the charity.
## **Resource Allocation**
This financial year the Board of Trustees had to restrict its financial expenditure due to the changing in business activities. The policies and procedures in place allowed the charity to control the process. Resource allocation was only in the areas that allowed the charity to maintain its business presence and meet its financial obligation. This can bee seen in our charity accounts. Income reduced due to the fact we could not to not trade normally.

As an organisation the Charities Act says that our charity trustees must ‘have regard’ to the commission’s public benefit guidance ‘when exercising any powers or duties to which the guidance is relevant’.
This statement takes the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 requirement for our charity’s trustees to include a statement in our trustees’ annual report as to whether we have complied with that duty.

‘Having regard’ to the commission’s public benefit guidance means as the trustees of Safe Haven, we are aware of the guidance and have taken it into account when making all decisions to which the guidance is relevant.
## **Our aims for the coming year 2022 / 2023**

- **Charitable Giving: -** Monitor resources and allocations
- **Training: -** Develop in-house processes around the church
The Board of Trustees have decided that our four key aims for this up and coming year will cover the above areas. These areas will help to build upon previous work undertaken over the last few years and further expand the structured approach to build a thriving and successful charitable concern.

In accordance with our engagement letter dated June 2014, and in order to assist you to fulfill your duties under English Law, we have compiled the financial statements of the club which comprise the Income and Expenditure Account, Balance Sheet Extracts & supporting notes from the accounting records and information and explanations that you have given to us.
This report is made to the Association as a body, in accordance with the terms of our engagement. Our work has been undertaken so that we might compile the financial statements that we have been engaged to compile, report to the company’s trustees and elected committee that we have done so, and state those matters that we have agreed to state to them in this report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law we do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the Club and the Club’s Committee, as a body, for our work or for this report .
We have carried out this engagement in accordance with technical guidance issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and have complied with the ethical guidance laid down by the Institute relating to members undertaking the compilation of financial statements.
You have acknowledged on the balance sheet as at 31st March 2022 your duty to ensure that the Association has kept proper accounting records and to prepare financial statements that give a true and fair view of the unincorporated Association's financial state of affairs. ## **1) Accounting Policies**
The following accounting policies have been consistently applied in dealing with the items, which are considered material in relation to the Association's accounts.
## a) Basis of Preparation
The accounts have been prepared under the historical cost accounting rules and in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard FRS 105
## b) Cash Flow
The accounts do not include a cash flow statement because the company, as a small reporting entity is exempt from the requirements to prepare such a statement under FRS 1 ‘Cash Flow Statements’ and the FRSSE or FRS 105.
## 2) Turnover
Turnover represents income from donated goods and other income includes £3462 received on behalf of The Job Retention Scheme.

## **1) Accounting Policies**

The accounts have been prepared under the historical cost accounting rules and in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard FRS 105
## b) Cash Flow
The accounts do not include a cash flow statement because the company, as a small reporting entity is exempt from the requirements to prepare such a statement under FRS 1 ‘Cash Flow Statements’ and the FRSSE or FRS 105.
