The Future Glory of Zion

Isaiah 35 New King James Version (NKJV)

The wilderness and the wasteland shall be glad for them, And the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the rose;

It shall blossom abundantly and rejoice, Even with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it,The excellence of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the Lord, The excellency of our God.

Say to those who are fearful-hearted, “Be strong, do not fear! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, With the recompense of God; He will come and save you.”

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, And the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.

Then the lame shall leap like a deer, And the tongue of the dumb sing. For waters shall burst forth in the wilderness, And streams in the desert.

The parched ground shall become a pool, And the thirsty land springs of water; In the habitation of jackals, where each lay, There shall be grass with reeds and rushes.

A highway shall be there, and a road, And it shall be called the Highway of Holiness. The unclean shall not pass over it, But it shall be for others. Whoever walks the road, although a fool, Shall not go astray.

No lion shall be there, Nor shall any ravenous beast go up on it; It shall not be found there. But the redeemed shall walk there,

And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, And come to Zion with singing, With everlasting joy on their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness, And sorrow and sighing shall flee away

Chairman’s Introduction

Dear friends,

What an extraordinary year we have encountered inside and outside of the business. It has been one of the most problematic and challenging situations the world has experienced. Could any one have ever predicted that global economics would have faced a world wide shut down due to a germ infecting the human race called Covid-19.

Safe Haven found that it could not trade due to the national lockdowns but we did manage to keep operating our Food Bank which increased massively throughout the whole financial year. This placed the charity in a situation that required a wide ranging approach to maintain and meet our commitments to our clients. We can take pride in our achievements in weathering such a complex set of issues that stretched our resolve to serve.

Since the year began we had to close our doors, then open for a short period and close again for the rest of the financial year. Not only did our customers suffer but also our clients and donators. The whole country faced similar challenges. Nevertheless, we should not look upon these issues with a negative spirit but be grateful for the faithfulness of Almighty God. Lets rejoice and be glad for such blessings. Therefore, having been justified by faith, [a]we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces [b]perseverance; and perseverance, [c]character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. (Romans Chapter 5 v’s 1-5 NKJV)

Every one can be encouraged in how we faced these times and how we all can move forward with resolve. You are all overcomer’s in Christ. Thank you all

Objectives & Activities

Safe Haven is striving to comply with its legal obligations stated in its governing document. Safe Haven is a charitable trust which was registered on the 21st August 2010 to help alleviate the needs of people living in the City of Leeds. A summary of our objectives are:-

Relief of Financial Hardship - In the past, the courts have tended to define ‘poverty’ by reference to financial hardship or lack of material things but, in current social and economic circumstances, poverty includes many disadvantages and difficulties arising from, or which cause, the lack of financial or material resources. It can affect individuals, families and whole communities.

The prevention or relief of poverty is not just about giving financial assistance to people who lack money; Not everyone who is in financial hardship is necessarily poor, but it may still be charitable to relieve their financial hardship under the description of purposes relating to ‘the relief of those in need by reason of youth, age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantages.

The relief of the physical and mental sickness of persons in need by the provision of counselling and support within the City of Leeds. The cross-government definition of domestic violence and abuse is: any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. The abuse can encompass, but is not limited to: psychological, physical, sexual, financial, emotional.

The advancement of the Christian Religion according to the teachings of Jesus Christ by providing a place of worship one is able to carry out devotional acts. These teachings demonstrate a beneficial, moral or ethical framework to live by. We believe that by showing veneration of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and God the Father a believer is able to love everyone.

The advancement of citizenship or community development - covers a broad group of charitable purposes directed towards support for social and community infrastructure which is focussed on those in need, by reason of youth, age, ill-health, disability looking to the community rather than the individual. The promotion of civic responsibility and good citizenship, the promotion of urban and rural regeneration, the promotion of volunteering, the promotion of the voluntary sector, promoting the efficiency and effectiveness of charities and the effective use of charitable resources, the promotion of community capacity building concerned with social investment.

The Charity is vehemently opposed to the use of slavery in all forms; cruel, inhuman or degrading punishments; and any attempt to control or reduce freedom of thought, conscience and religion. “To promote human rights (as set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and subsequent United Nations conventions and declarations) throughout the world by all or any of the following means: Monitoring abuses of human rights, obtaining redress for the victims of human rights abuse, relieving need among the victims of human rights abuse, research into human rights issues, providing technical advice to government and others on human rights matters, contributing to the sound administration of human rights law, commenting on proposed human rights legislation, raising awareness of human rights issues, promoting public support for human rights, promoting respect for human rights among individuals and corporations, international advocacy of human rights and eliminating infringements of human rights.

In furtherance of that object but not otherwise, the trustees shall have power to engage in political activity provided that the trustees are satisfied that the proposed activities will further the

purposes of the charity to an extent justified by the resources committed and the activity is not the dominant means by which the charity carried out its objects.”

The promotion of equality and diversity for the benefit of the public is a charitable purpose. The Charity will promote equality and diversity for the public benefit by: Promoting the equality of women with men, promoting of racial and religious harmony, the elimination of discrimination on the grounds of race, gender, disability , sexual orientation or religion, advancing education and raising awareness in equality and diversity, promoting activities to foster understanding between people from diverse backgrounds.

Such charitable purposes for the public benefit - as are exclusively charitable according to the laws of England and Wales as the trustees may from time to time determine.

The main activities undertaken in relation to these purposes shall be the over arching guide to our commitment to the people it is serving and in compliance with our trust deed.

Community

Our aim was to “Recruit and develop business opportunities” throughout the year. This aim had to be restructured due to the closure of our store for most of the financial year. Instead of increasing our presence in the area we had to limit ourselves to maintaining business continuity but we did make strides in our charitable giving around Food Bank and Counselling service.

Partnerships

We established and strengthened partnerships with supermarkets, retailers, charities and churches around Leeds. This improved the lives of people in a physiological way but it must be noted that individuals across society suffered due to the need to self isolate for such long periods of time. Working with partners we increased the charities outreach capabilities to feed families across key sectors.

Integration

Collective processes have now been synergised into one effective process that will stand the charity in good stead for the future. Each key area of our documentation works in part with each other. By creating a comprehensive approach The Charity is now ready to implement the next stage of the business development process. Coronavirus affected every area of the economy not just our business.

Training

Business planning was to implement our computerised database but this had to be paused due to the economic downturn caused by coronavirus. Couple this with a contraction of the economy then we have decided to refocus our business priorities. Training also suffered because the majority of our staff ended up being furloughed for most of the year.

Performance Indicators

Financial Review

Financial strategies and business decisions have reshaped every area of the business, from the Board of Trustees to volunteers, each and every member of the team have put the needs of the community at the forefront of our activities. For a breakdown of statistical data please see our accounts.

Strategic Development

In accordance with the Board of Trustees directives and in unison with our four stated aims the Administration Team implemented and applied diligence for both the charity and its recipients. This was achieved in the following areas

Resource Allocation

This financial year has allowed the Board of Trustees to improve its business strategy and corporate expenditure. New effective business management practices have improved targeted resource allocation across all charitable activities. This enabled the charity to grow in various areas and expand our outreach activities.

As an organisation the Charities Act says that our charity trustees must ‘have regard’ to the commission’s public benefit guidance ‘when exercising any powers or duties to which the guidance is relevant’.

This statement takes the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 requirement for our charity’s trustees to include a statement in our trustees’ annual report as to whether we have complied with that duty.

‘Having regard’ to the commission’s public benefit guidance means as the trustees of Safe Haven, we are aware of the guidance and have taken it into account when making all decisions to which the guidance is relevant.

Our aims for the coming year 2021 / 2022

• Charitable Giving: - Targeted resources

The Board of Trustees have decided that our four key aims for this up and coming year will cover the above areas. These areas will help to build upon previous work undertaken over the last few years and further expand the structured approach to build a thriving and successful charitable concern.

The Treasurer presents his report with the financial statements of the club for the year ended 31st March 2021

**Principal

Activity**

The Association is registered with the Charities Commission as Charity number 1137823.

Treasurer

The Treasurer, Tony Anderson, held office during the whole year from 1st April 2020 to the date of this report. During the year under review, the business environment created by Coronavirus resulted in a drastic reduction in turnover. This affected every area of the business apart from the Food Bank, which was rather ironic due to the fact it cost the Charity financially, but benefitted all those we helped. Taking into account the economic situation, the Charity had to take far reaching decisions that impacted the whole business. These should enable us to move forward and reestablish ourselves in the community. We are taught in Scripture to rejoice in all situations.

Charity suffereth long and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity shall never faileth:but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. (Corinthians 13v4-‐8 KJV) In short, we keep on keeping on.

Signed
