## **OBJECTIVES**
The Rescue was set up in March 2010 with the aims of:
- Putting in place a network of volunteers and supporting procedures to facilitate the rehoming and rescue of Cocker and English Springer Spaniels.
- Where necessary, providing veterinary and training support for the dogs placed in our care.
- Providing on-going support for veterinary care where necessary in order to facilitate the rehoming of elderly or infirm dogs.
- Where appropriate, encouraging responsible owners to persevere with their problem dogs by providing information, advice, support and guidance.
- CAESSR was set up by John and Pat Powell and Ian and Di Harrison.

## **ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS**
CAESSR was initially set up to cover the Midlands, however, with our growing band of helpers, we are now able to re-home Cockers and Springers to most parts of the country.
Our main base is in Staffordshire. We use Hardiwick Kennels, which is a private Boarding Kennels. We have a block set aside for CAESSR dogs with an excellent staff member, who works closely with all the dogs and gets to know them. Most of our dogs are taken into these kennels for assessment before they are rehomed. All dogs with health problems are given any necessary veterinary treatment prior to rehoming.
In April 2022, the start of our thirteenth year, we were able to rehome 49 dogs. At the end of March 2023 we had 10 dogs in kennels awaiting homes.
Mandy, employed by Hardiwick Kennels, continues to be ‘Mum’ to all the dogs who come through kennels. We are so grateful for the interest she takes in them all. This helps so much to get the right new home for each dog. Mandy is able to administer medication, groom and clean up neglected dogs. She can also take photographs of the dogs for our records if necessary. Tony Pimblett has also been helping to take dogs for vet appointments.
Managing the update of Microchip data is very time consuming especially as we are currently having to deal with 13 different Microchip companies each with different systems. Breeders and new puppy owners are not registering Microchips as the Law requires. Owners are not keeping their contact details up-to-date. We are under an obligation to make sure that we are not rehoming a stolen dog.
“Cocker Rage” remains a great concern to CAESSR with John and Di turning away many dogs that are afflicted. We are beginning to rescue young Spaniels bought as puppies during the pandemic. Their owners now can't manage them due to their work commitments.
All trustees and volunteers of the charity are unpaid helpers. Out of pocket expenses are paid to trustees and volunteers but in many cases these expenses are not reclaimed.
## **DOG CARE**
The Homing Officer works closely with the Chairman. Diana Harrison is largely responsible for the matching process to ensure each dog gets the right home. John Powell handles the home vetting of prospective new owners. They handle spaniel adoption and general enquiries received by the charity.
John Powell supervises and co-ordinates our activities at the Kennels. Emma Downing is beginning to help with this and is attracting local volunteers to help with dog walking and activities.
Mandy at Hardiwick Kennels can provide basic grooming. Some of the dogs that come to us are in such a mess we don't have any choice as we couldn't rehome them without being groomed.
## **VOLUNTEERS**
The charity is still more than ever reliant on volunteers to help with the work of CAESSR. As it stands, we wish to thank the same old helpers who are there at the other end of the phone. But the same as last year, we desperately need new blood as we are not getting any younger.
## **WORKING WITH OTHER CHARITIES**
We have established a good working relationship with many other dog rescue centres, sharing home checkers. We work closely with the City Dogs home in Stoke-on-Trent, who approach us to take unwanted and stray Spaniels that they can’t rehome and shouldn’t be destroyed.

## **ADMINISTRATION AND ACCOUNTING**
Accounts for the year 2022/23 have been completed by Lisa Guthrie and independently verified by Zoe Lawton. They show total Income of £41,382.95 which was an increase from the prior year (£35k). Expenditure has also increased to £50,468.59 for the year, resulting in a deficit for this year of -£9,085.64. The total assets carried forward and ending balance for the year is £16,011.37, to be carried forward into the new fiscal year.
Of the £50,468.59 expenses, £46,883.36 are direct expenses, £1,687.08 are attributable to fundraising and the remaining £1,898.15 are management and administrative costs. This equates to an average monthly cost to the charity of £4,206 which has substantially this year. The main increase in costs was seen in the Veterinary and kennelling sections, where a number of dogs have required major surgeries/operations upon having their health assessments.
The secretary for the charity undertakes all statutory issues relating to the charity. He also maintains the Charity's website and submits any Gift Aid claims.
## **FUNDRAISING**
In this our thirteenth year, funds have been raised mainly by donation, Gift Aid and sponsored events held by supporters. We produced and sold a 2023 calendar and Christmas Cards, orders handled by Emma Downing. Very popular are sponsored events through the ‘Just Giving’ facility. Our Sponsor-a-Spaniel scheme is also being managed by Emma and we are looking to expand our fund raising. New volunteer Clair Statham has taken on the task of Fundraising and has attended several events and raised funds for CAESSR. She has also introduced a Recycling Scheme.
## **PUBLICITY**
Facebook continues to grow in popularity and is a great resource to show the dogs we are anxious to rehome and brings in many donations and new volunteers.
At the invitation of the Kennel Club John Powell and Emma Downing took a team of volunteers and their Spaniels to man the Discover Dogs stand at CRUFTS under the CAESSR banner. They were kept busy all day and the dogs behaved themselves very well and enjoyed all the fuss and attention.
