## **COCKER AND ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIEL RESCUE** ## **TRUSTEES' ANNUAL REPORT** Registered Charity Number 1137589 The Trustees' report and accounts for the year ended 31 March 2021 ## **CHARITY'S PRINCIPAL ADDRESS** The address of the Charity Secretary is: C/o Old Mother Redcap Duddon Tarporley Cheshire CW6 OEL ## **OBJECTIVES** The Rescue was set up in March 2010 with the aims of: - Putting in place a network of volunteers and supporting procedures to facilitate the rehoming and rescue of Cocker and English Springer Spaniels. - Where necessary, providing veterinary and training support for the dogs placed in our care. - Providing on-going support for veterinary care where necessary in order to facilitate the rehoming of elderly or infirm dogs. - Where appropriate, encouraging responsible owners to persevere with their problem dogs by providing information, advice, support and guidance. - CAESSR was set up by John and Pat Powell and Ian and Di Harrison. ## **ADVISERS** The principal advisers of the charity are: **Banker Charity Setup** The Coperative Bank Clive Denny IP, F.C.A. Our main base is in Staffordshire. We use Hardiwick Kennels, which is a private Boarding Kennels. We have a block set aside for CAESSR dogs with an excellent staff member, who works closely with all the dogs and gets to know them. Most of our dogs are taken into these kennels for assessment before they are rehomed. All dogs with health problems are given any necessary veterinary treatment and if, necessary, they recover in one of the few foster homes that we have close to the kennels. Our behaviourist, Karen Jennings, will visit problem dogs in the kennels and will also assist new owners with any problems they encounter when settling in their new dog. At the start of our 11[th] year in April 2020, we were already in COVID-19 lockdown. We had to curtail our activities and slow down as Hardiwick Kennels had to close. We were sad to loose Sadie and Jillian but Mandy took over the care of our CAESSR dogs and we were so grateful that the kennels stayed open for us. Mandy became “Mum” for those few dogs that had to stay with us for a long time. We wish to thank her for looking after them so well. Other volunteers became key workers at the kennels to walk the dogs and to help Mandy. Katie and Tony Yates made some improvements by making the paddock more secure and provided an outside hot water tap to clean up muddy dogs! Thank-you Katie and Tony, and to all of those volunteers who helped during this period. The number of dogs re-homed for this period was only 24 but we had 7 dogs still waiting for new homes at the end of the period. Four dogs were P.T.S. due to aggression or illness. In the current year so far, we have re-homed 42 dogs with 2 dogs P.T.S. and sadly Bella who passed away after giving birth to 10 puppies. The puppies have been hand reared and successfully re-homed. Going forward, “Cocker Rage” is a great concern to CAESSR and other rescues. The demand for Cocker Spaniels was high during lockdown. Rescues are being approached to take those who are showing aggression, guarding issues and have bitten. All trustees and volunteers of the charity are unpaid helpers. Out of pocket expenses are paid to trustees and volunteers but in many cases these expenses are not reclaimed. ## **DOG CARE** The Homing Officer works closely with the Chairman. Diana Harrison is largely responsible for the matching process to ensure each dog gets the right home. John Powell handles the home vetting of prospective new owners. They handle spaniel adoption and general enquiries received by the charity, John Powell supervises and co-ordinates our activities at the Kennels. Mandy at Hardiwick Kennels can provide basic grooming. Some of the dogs that come to us are in such a mess we don't have any choice as we couldn't rehome them without being groomed. ## **VOLUNTEERS** We have a few longstanding volunteers who come regularly to walk the dogs in our kennels. We are hoping that their role can be expanded to assist John Powell in taking the dogs to the vets. The charity is still more than ever reliant on volunteers to help with the work of CAESSR. As it stands, we wish to thank the same old helpers who are there at the other end of the phone. But the same as last year we desperately need new blood as we are not getting any younger. Page 2 ## **WORKING WITH OTHER CHARITIES** We have established a good working relationship with many other dog rescue centres, sharing home checkers. We work closely with the City Dogs home in Stoke-on-Trent, who approach us to take unwanted and stray Spaniels that they can’t rehome and shouldn’t be destroyed. ## **ADMINISTRATION AND ACCOUNTING** The collection of income, the payment of bills and recording of transactions into our books and records is handled by our Treasurer - Lisa Guthrie. She monitors our cash position and also prepared our annual accounts. The Accounts show that Covid-19 has had a substantial impact on the Charity income. Notwithstanding, there was a small surplus of income over expenditure, but this was largely due to a bequest. The secretary for the charity undertakes all statutory issues relating to the charity. He also maintains the Charity's website and submits any Gift Aid claims. ## **FUNDRAISING** In this our eleventh year, funds have been raised mainly by donation, Gift Aid and sponsored events held by supporters. We produced and sold a 2021 calendar and Christmas Cards, orders handled by Emma Downing, and raised funds from used stamps. Very popular are sponsored events through the ‘Just Giving’ facility. Our Sponsor-a-Spaniel scheme is also being managed by Emma and we are looking to expand our fund raising in this area. ## **PUBLICITY** Facebook continues to grow in popularity and is a great resource to show the dogs we are anxious to rehome and brings in many donations and new volunteers. ## **SIGNATURE AND DECLARATION** I declare in my capacity of charity trustee that the trustees have approved the report above and have authorised me to sign it on their behalf.
