## **Governance and management**
The charity is operated under the rules of its constitution adopted 10 March 2009 and most recently amended 25 February 2019.
For the recruitment of trustees, we approach parents – generally those that tend to volunteer often – and enquire whether they would be interested in becoming a trustee. We also advertise in our newsletter. We may look to employ our Facebook account to advertise in the future. Where possible, we target parents that offer specific skills which can complement the team.
## **Objectives and activities**
To advance the music education of children and young people in Wirksworth and its vicinity, in the Derbyshire Dales, North East Derbyshire and Amber Valley districts, by: (A) Providing and/or facilitating the provision of good quality music making activities;
- (B) Providing access to music learning and performance opportunities;
- (C) Such other charitable means as the Trustees in their discretion shall decide with a view to developing the musical skills of such children.
## **Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit**
We provide weekly music groups where children can practise playing in ensembles led by music teachers (Ensemble Directors), followed by end of term concerts where children can experience and practise public performance. We arrange visits by external groups/organisations or to events to extend children’s musical experiences.
Concerts are put on during the year and may be enjoyed by the public within the local community. For example, this year the Youth choir performed in the Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir Christmas concert. Children moving on from the Music Centre join other groups and orchestras and can continue to perform to the public.

## **Public benefit statement**
The Trustees confirm that they have complied with the duty in section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit, 'Charities and Public Benefit'.
## **Summary of the main achievements during the period**
- Started the new guitar and ukulele after school club with the support of Foundation Derbyshire John Weston Fund.
- We are very grateful to those contributing to our Friends Scheme which is attracting regular donations from a number of supporters.
- Other financial donations have also been received from other local supporters which are also very much appreciated.
- Tuesday Youth choir group has been relocated from the Memorial Hall to the School to provide a suitable venue at reduced cost.
- The Youth choir put on a wonderful performance at the Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir Christmas event.
## **Financial review and risks**
The number of children attending Music Centre has continued to remain lower since Covid. We have slightly increased the membership subscription rate during the year and have increased Ensemble Director hourly rates.
We continue look at our financial options with respect to income generation e.g. new groups, donations, and sponsorship, whilst working with the Derby & Derbyshire Music Partnership and continuing to provide quality musical activities and development for children.
The £7,000 grant from the Music Partnership was not received in the previous financial year (2023-2024), instead it being received at the beginning of this financial year (2024-25). In addition, the £7,000 grant from the Music Partnership for this financial year was also received within the year, which has the effect of showing an increased revenue (double grant) which is not the real case over the two school years and has created an annual total income which is unrepresentative.
Taking this abnormal double grant income condition into account by subtracting £7,000 from the £7,774 net receipts we end with a position of £774, which is just above break even. This includes a significant contribution of a £2,500 grant from Foundation Derbyshire for the new Guitar and Ukulele group initiative. The majority of the costs for this will occur in the next financial year despite the income (grant) being recorded in this year.
## **The charity’s policy on reserves**
We aim to keep a surplus of £20k in the bank to cover potential deficit caused by a drop in numbers and revenue – whilst still needing to pay the essential Ensemble Directors and for venue hire.

Our Music Partnership grant has not historically increased with inflation and we are aware that the double grant occurrence is unusual. Our reserves effectively enabled continued provision of our valued music making activities during the prior year, effectively spanning until the grant funds were received.
We continue to consider our financial position and reserves going forward.
## **Additional note to report**
We have been informed that Mrs Newey who had independently examined our documentation in recent years has passed away. We are very saddened with the news and very much appreciate the time and support she gave us.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of Wirksworth Music Centre (the charity) for the year ended 31 August 2025.
## Responsibilities and basis of report
As the trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the act’).
I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## Independent examiner’s statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
1. Accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or
2. The accounts do not accord with those records.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

**1. Receipts & payments accounts**
Receipts and payments accounts contain a summary of money received and money spent during the period and a list of assets and liabilities at the end of the period. Usually, cash received and cash spent will include transactions through bank accounts and cash in hand.
## **2. Income from Donations and legacies**
This includes:
- gifts and donations received or receivable including legacies
- any tax reclaimed on amounts received under gift aid
- grants that provide core funding or are of a general nature
- membership subscriptions and sponsorships where these are, in substance, donations
- gifts in kind and donated services and facilities
The Grant from the Derbyshire Music Partnership has historically been paid towards the end of the school (financial) year. No payment was received during the previous financial year (2023-2024) but two payments of £7,000 were received during this financial year (2024-2025). This occurrence is unusual. In the future we plan for one Grant payment per financial year as we received in the past.
The highest value donation from an individual and also from a related party was from a Trustee's spouse for membership subscription for two children totalling £352.

## **3. Income from Charitable activities**

The guitar and ukulele after school club commenced in the last term of the year and we are grateful for the grant funding from Foundation Derbyshire John Weston Fund for specifically supporting this new initiative.

## **4. Income from Other Trading Activities**
This is income from trading activities that specifically raise funds for the charity, for example:
- fundraising events such as jumble sales, firework displays and concerts
- sponsorships and social lotteries which are not pure donations
- shop income from selling donated goods and bought-in goods
- providing goods and services other than for the benefit of the charity’s beneficiaries
- letting and licensing property held mainly for functional use but temporary surplus to requirements

The charity does not employ any staff. During this period, payments were made to eight self employed tutors (regular Ensemble Directors) for services provided. One of whom is a Trustee.
## **7. Trustees’ remuneration**
During the period, one trustee received a total of £1,600 for the provision of music tuition services, plus £103 expenses for Instruments/Music/Equipment.
