## SECTION D ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE.

2021 BEGAN AMID HIGH POLITICAL TENSIONS IN UGANDA DUE TO THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS. THERE WERE RIOTS, AGGRESSIVE ATTACKS AND POLICE BRUTALITY IN THE MAJOR CITIES WITH INTERNET BEING CUT OFF COUNTRYWIDE. WE HAD NO CONTACT WITH ESTHER BAGOOLE UNTIL MID-JANUARY WHEN PRESIDENT MUSEVENI WAS DECLARED THE WINNER AND INTERNET CONNECTION RESTORED.

HFOC WAS NOT AFFECTED BY THE RIOTS BUT REMAINED CLOSED DUE TO THE COVID-19 LOCKDOWN. HOWEVER, THE TEACHERS CONTINUED TO PROVIDE ‘STUDY PACKS’ TO THE STUDENTS AND 200 PUPILS ON AVERAGE CAME TO THE SCHOOL EVERYDAY TO PLAY, BE TUTORED INDIVIDUALLY AND FED A WARM, NUTRITIOUS MEAL.

80 GIRLS REMAINED LIVING IN THE DORMITORIES DURING THE LOCKDOWN. THEY WORKED IN THE SCHOOL GARDEN, TOOK CARE OF THE GOATS AND PARTICIPATED IN THE TAILORING WORKSHOP.

ESTHER BAGOOLE AND MEMBERS OF STAFF REMAINED IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH GUARDIANS AND PUPILS DURING THE LOCKDOWN. MANY BOYS IN THE COMMUNITY WENT TO WORK IN THE SUGAR CANE PLANTATIONS AND A VERY LARGE PERCENTAGE OF TEENAGE GIRLS FACED UNWANTED PREGNANCIES, EARLY MARRIAGE AND CHILD LABOUR.

A LARGE NUMBER OF TEACHERS IN UGANDA FOUND ALTERNATIVE SOURCES OF INCOME.

HOWEVER, THE HFOC STUDENTS AND TEACHERS DID NOT GO DOWN THIS ROUTE. UKHF CONTINUED TO FUND THE TEACHERS’ SALARIES AND ESTHER BAGOOLE ENSURED REGULAR CONTACT WAS MAINTAINED WITH THE STUDENTS TO MAKE SURE THEY WERE SAFE AND HEALHY.

AT THE END OF MARCH, SCHOOLS WERE OPENED FOR GRADUATING STUDENTS. 53 STUDENTS FROM THE GRADUATING P7 CLASS RETURNED TO SIT THEIR NATIONAL EXAMS AT THE HFOC EXAM CENTRE PRESIDED OVER BY EXTERNAL INVIGILATORS FROM THE DISTRICT.

THE 5 GRADUTATING STUDENTS FROM BUSIIRO SECONDARY SCHOOL SAT THEIR EXAMS AND THE GIRLS RETURNED TO LIVE AT HFOC IN THE DORMITORIES.

UKHF TRUSTEES AND MEMBERS OF THE HFOC BOARD HELD A VIRTUAL MEETING ON 20[TH] MARCH WHERE THE FUTURE OF HFOC SCHOOL WAS DISCUSSED. THE DILAPIDATED STATE OF THE NURSERY CLASSROOMS WAS RAISED HOWEVER UKHF FELT THAT FUNDRAISING FOR THE RUNNING OF THE SCHOOL, TEACHERS’ SALARIES AND FOOD WERE MORE URGENT THAN A NEW SCHOOL BUILDING. THE POSSIBILITY OF SHARING THE VTC WITH THE NURSERY SCHOOL STUDENTS WAS SUGGESTED.

DUE TO THE COMPLICATIONS IN UGANDA RESULTING FROM THE COVID 19 PANDEMIC, THE HFOC BOARD HAS BEEN UNABLE TO CONTRIBUTE FINANCIALLY TOWARDS THE SCHOOL. SINCE DECEMBER 2020 UKHF HAS BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR FUNDING 100% OF TEACHERS’ SALARIES, SCHOOL RUNNING COSTS, NEW GUTTERING ON CLASSROOM BUILDINGS, 3 NEW WATER TANKS AND BUILDING AN ENERGY SAVING STOVE.

THANKS TO THESE ADDITIONS, HFOC HAS BEEN ABLE TO COLLECT LARGER AMOUNTS OF RAIN WATER FOR DRINKING, COOKING AND GARDENING.

IN ORDER TO MOVE TOWARDS GREATER SUSTAINABILITY, HFOC HAS ACTIVELY CULTIVATED THE SCHOOL GARDEN, GROWING CASSAVA, MAIZE AND A VARIETY OF VEGETABLES TO FEED THE PUPILS AND TEACHERS. THE AIM IS TO BE FULLY SELF SUFFICIENT IN FOOD BY NEXT YEAR.

HFOC REACHED OUT TO NGOs BASED IN UGANDA, SUCH AS LIVING WATER AND STRAIGHT TALK FOUNDATION TO BUILD PARTNERSHIPS BUT NOTHING CONCRETE HAS COME OUT OF IT SO FAR DO TO THE INSTABILITY OF THE COUNTRY DURING THE PANDEMIC.

IN MAY, PRIMARY 1 TO 6 RETURNED TO SCHOOL WITH NURSERY CLASSES JOINING AT THE END OF THE MONTH. 15 TEACHERS RETURNED TO WORK WITH 3 VOCATIONAL TRAINING STAFF STARTING UP THE TAILORING AND HAIRDRESSING WORKSHOPS. A NEW BOOKKEEPER, FLORENCE NAIGULU, JOINED THE SCHOOL AND IS IN CHARGE OF MONTHLY ACCOUNTS AND BUDGETS.

ITEMS PRODUCED IN THE VTC WERE SOLD IN THE LOCAL MARKETS GENERATING A SMALL INCOME THAT WERE INJECTED BACK INTO THE PROJECT.

SCHOOLS WERE CLOSED AGAIN DUE TO A PEAK IN COVID-19 CASES IN JUNE. THE GENERAL LOCKDOWN LASTED 42 DAYS WITH SCHOOLS REMAINING CLOSED UNTIL JANUARY 2022.

ONCE AGAIN THE HFOC STAFF PREPARED STUDY PACKS AND ALL THE STUDENTS WHO DAILY CAME TO THE SCHOOL WERE FED.

THE UGANDAN GOVERNMENT REQUIRED ALL TEACHERS TO BE VACCINATED IF THEY WERE TO RETURN TO WORK. ALL MEMBERS OF THE HFOC STAFF ARE FULLY VACCINATED.

DESPITE MANY HARDSHIPS IN 2021, HFOC SHARED THREE WONDERFUL SUCCESS STORIES. ANNET KAUDA AND ZAINA NAKIBULE, BOTH ORPHANS AT A VERY YOUNG AGE WERE TAKEN IN BY HFOC AND WORKED VERY HARD AT SCHOOL. THEY WERE AWARDED PLACES ON THE UKHF SCHOLARSHIP FUND, CONTINUING THEIR SECONDARY SCHOOL EDUCATION AT BUSIIRO SECONDARY SCHOOL. THANKS TO LES AMICALES, THEY WERE BOTH ABLE TO CONTINUE ON TO UNIVERSITY AND ARE THE FIRST GIRLS FROM HFOC TO GRADUATE WITH UNIVERSITY DEGREES.

ANNET HAS A BACHELOR’S DEGREE FROM THE UGANDA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY IN PHYSICS, MATHEMATICS AND ECONOMICS AND ZAINA HAS GRADUATED WITH A DEGREE IN HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT FROM MAKERERE UNIVERSITY. THEY HAVE BOTH RETURNED TO HFOC AS MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKERS BRINGING HOPE TO THE YOUNG STUDENTS.

GLORIA NAKISIGE GRADUATED WITH THE HIGHEST PLE (PRIMARY LEAVING EXAMS) RESULTS IN THE DISTRICT AND THE ONLY STUDENT IN THE REGION (6 DISTRICTS) WHO SCORED A DISTINCTION IN ENGLISH!

THE HFOC STUDENTS CONTINUE TO REACH THE HIGHEST RESULTS IN THE PLE EXAMS WITH HFOC BEING THE OVERALL BEST SCHOOL IN THE DISTRICT.
