PURPOSE ORIENTED ACTIVITIES

Purpose Oriented Activities

This section summarises the main the main activities undertaken by the church during the year 2024-25 to achieve its constitutionally declared purposes that include the spiritual enrichment of its members and participation in attending to the needs of the community during this year. A report on these activities is summarized as below.

By the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, it has been the blessing & privilege of Hermon Mar Thoma Church to serve the Mar Thoma diaspora community in the Midlands area of the United Kingdom for past 18 years. We have come a long way from when we started as a prayer group of St John Mar Thoma Church some 20 odd years back, over the past 18 years we have grown as a parish. We are one of the largest parishes in the UK by geographical spread, from Stoke on Trent in the North to Banbury in the South and from Mansfield in the North-East to Worcester in the South-West. Our membership has been steadily growing; we now have 129 registered families & individuals and there are a good number of regular guest worshippers too. Over the years we have worshipped in 5 venues around Birmingham, and we have been here at St Marys for the past 8 years. We thank God for His immense blessing on us and our fellowship and pray that He continues to guide us to thrive in his Ministry in the years to come.

The year 2024-25, has been challenging the war in Ukraine has continued rage on over the past year with no sign of resolution, and the war that broke out in the Middle east following the October 7th attack on civilians in Israel which saw a military response that has seen unimaginable death and displacement of the Palestinian population has continued.

The events around the world have affected the UK too so has many domestic issues.

However, during these trying times, we have seen God’s miracles all around us and in our personal lives, we praise him for all his mercies on all of us.

The past year was quite special for us as a Mar Thoma Community in the UK along with our brothers & sisters in the rest of Europe & Africa, on September 29[th] , 2024, we were blessed with the official inauguration of the Diocese of UK, Europe & Africa by our Metropolitan Theodosius Mar Thoma with Rt Rev Dr Joseph Mar Ivanios as the Diocesan Episcopa.

ORGANISATION REPORTS

SUNDAY SCHOOL

Hermon Marthoma Church Sunday School has completed yet another successful year with the presence of the Great Shepherd in our midst & His immense blessing.

We are blessed with the leadership and guidance from our Vicar, Rev John T Thomas. We follow the UK-Europe & Africa Diocese Sunday school curriculum.

Currently we have around 68 students registered in 13 classes.

Sunday school classes have traditionally been held every Sunday before the Holy Communion service, and we have continued that through the past academic year. The last academic year resumed on 13[th] October 2024 and due to changes with regards to availability of the venue, Sunday school were held between 1:00-2;00 pm before the Holy Communion Service.

The continued dedication of the parents, who dutifully continue to bring their children to classes is to be appreciated. This has resulted in children having a blessed time, growing in the Word of God, engaging in songs, Bible readings and fun, interactive games.

In the past year, in addition the Sunday school children have been encouraged to participate in the worship. They, alongside the youth, have recently started participating in our new Praise and Worship service before every English Holy Communion service on the 1[st] & 3[rd] Sundays at 2:00pm. The initiative has been well received by the congregation and has been a blessing for all involved.

COUPLE FELLOWSHIP

The Couple Fellowship has been diligently working to foster community spirit and enhance fellowship among the members of Hermon Mar Thoma Church. Through steadfast dedication and enthusiasm, the group organized several impactful events throughout the year, reinforcing bonds and encouraging greater participation.

1. Couple Fellowship Meeting

Last year, the Couple Fellowship initiated a significant program aimed at fostering connections and strengthening relationships among young couples within the church community. The inaugural meeting was held on 28th April 2024 at St. Mary Hobs Moat Church and marked a promising beginning for this new endeavor.

The event was structured to offer spiritual enrichment, enjoyable activities, and thoughtful discussions. The agenda included praise and worship, prayer partners, discussions on couple goals,

games, and a bible quiz. Rev. John T. Thomas Achen delivered a heartfelt and inspiring message, encouraging couples to strengthen their faith and relationships. This first meeting was immensely successful, creating a welcoming space for young couples to connect, share, and grow together in their journey of faith.

2. Parish Picnic

The Parish Picnic on 31st August 2024 at Rutland Aqua Park was an unforgettable day filled with fun, laughter, and camaraderie for the Hermon Mar Thoma Church community. Organized by the Couple Fellowship, this one-day outing provided families with an excellent opportunity to relax, enjoy, and build stronger connections within the congregation.

The event featured engaging games, scenic boat trips, football, and cricket, creating cherished memories with loved ones. For lunch, wrapped in banana leaves, ‘ pothichor’ offered a delightful dining experience with its unique combination of flavors and aromas. The picturesque setting of Rutland Aqua Park served as the ideal backdrop for a day of fellowship and joy, with opportunities for both adventure and serene family time.

3. Couple Fellowship Meeting

The Couple Fellowship continued its mission of strengthening relationships and promoting spiritual growth by organizing another meaningful meeting on the 15th of February at Brandon and Wolston Village Hall.

The highlight of the event was the presence of Rev. Thomas Joseph, an esteemed speaker from the Germany congregation, who delivered an inspiring message. He reminded us that while we may focus on imperfections or differences, God sees the deeper qualities and potential within our partners— qualities that align with His plan for our lives. Sometimes, what may seem unsuitable to us could be an opportunity for growth, understanding, or even fulfilling a higher purpose that we might not immediately recognize.

4. Altar Flowers

The Couple Fellowship has been encouraging families to voluntarily provide fresh flowers for the altar during Sunday Worship services. This thoughtful initiative has elevated the worship ambiance and provided families with a meaningful way to celebrate personal milestones such as birthdays and anniversaries.

Choir membership

We were a 45-member Choir; however, throughout the year, there have been a few resignations from the choir, which has led to the choir strength being reduced to 37 members by the end of the year.

PURPOSE ORIENTED ACTIVITIES

There was also a brief period in our choir membership where misunderstandings had arisen, which was rectified by the timely intervention of our Diocese Thirumeni Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Ivanios Episcopa. The choir has continued strengthening, refining their harmonies and deepening their connection to the ministry.

Christmas Carols 2024

The choir's participation in the Christmas carols this year was exceptional. Their dedication and hard work throughout the rehearsal period from September 2024 culminated in a series of beautiful, uplifting performances that added a special touch to the holiday season. The choir's songs of 'Unto us a child is born', 'This child' and 'Tharangal Nira Nirayai' were filled with emotion and grace, creating a warm, festive atmosphere for the congregation. Rev Bekah Clark gave a thought-provoking and inspiring Christmas message for the Carols 2024.

Hermon MTC choir also participated in the Diocesan Carols. Their performance was a seamless blend of voices, bringing to life the timeless messages of hope and joy that Christmas represents.

This year, the choir also reached out to the broader community by singing carols in Ardenlea Court care home, spreading the message of Christmas cheer through carolling events, which were warmly received. The carolling in a care home was the first time in Hermon Mar Thoma's history, and thanks to teamwork, the choir's participation was a highlight of the season and demonstrated the strength of our church's musical ministry.

Ecumenical Choir Competition

Hermon MTC Choir participated in the Ecumenical Christmas carol competition' Joy to the World' this year, which Garshom TV and London Asaphians organised. By The grace of God, we won the second prize with a cash prize of £500.00. Congrats to all Hermon MTC Choir members for their commitment and dedication to this achievement.

PURPOSE ORIENTED ACTIVITIES

Throughout the year, the youth actively participated in multiple zonal youth fellowship events. These events provided valuable opportunities for our young people to connect with peers from surrounding congrega6ons, fostering a sense of unity and fellowship.

A cornerstone of this year’s youth activities was the initiative to have youth-led praise and worship services on every third Sunday of the month. This ini6a6ve empowered the young members of our congregation to take on key roles within the worship service, including:

This experience proved invaluable, as it not only allowed the youth to exercise their gifts and talents but also played a significant role in their personal spiritual growth. By taking on these responsibilities, our young people were able to strengthen their leadership abilities, deepen their faith, and contribute meaningfully to the church’s worship experience. The positive recep6on from the congregation demonstrated the success of this initiative in crea6ng a dynamic and engaging worship atmosphere.

The youth have proactively organised events throughout the year, ranging from the Mother’s Day event, the youth organized a bake sale featuring a wide variety of baked goods. This event was a gesture of appreciation for the mothers within the congregation, while also serving as a fundraising initiative for the Youth conference this summer. The youth worked collaboratively to prepare, package, and sell the baked goods, demonstra6ng teamwork and dedica6on to serving the church community.

During the church’s Parish Day and Christmas celebra6ons, the youth took part in a special musical performance, showcasing their vocal and instrumental talents. This event was a testament to the youth’s dedication and creativity, as they worked together to prepare a meaningful and uplifting performance.

The Hermon Church Youth Ministry has had a remarkable year of growth, service, and fellowship. Through active participation in zonal youth fellowship events, the successful implementation of
