Charity No : 1137185 Charity Name : Hermon Mar Thoma Church Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK Page 2 2022-23 PURPOSE OBJECTIVES AND MISSION , ## Purpose, Objectives and Mission ## PURPOSE The purpose of the Charity is to advance Christian faith and develop a community rooted in biblical doctrine to lead a Christian life. ## OBJECTIVES The main objectives of the Church are to, - ➢ advance the Christian religion in the Midlands Region - ➢ provide its members with regular Christian worship services, in accordance with the traditions of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar - ➢ provide pastoral care and organize activities to promote the spiritual life of its members - ➢ make voluntary contributions for evangelistic and charitable work in the United Kingdom and abroad – especially India. ## MISSION The Mar Thoma Church defines itself as ‘Oriental in origin, Eastern in traditions, Episcopal in nature, Democratic in administration, Catholic in mission, Reformed in faith, Evangelical in outreach work and Ecumenical in vision. Each and every adult member of the Church is considered to be an Evangelist’. The Church may participate in collaborative programmes with other Churches with which it has communal relationships and also participate in all acceptable ecumenical relationships as a full member of the World Council of Churches (WCC), Churches Together in England (CTE) and Churches Together in Britain and Ireland (CTBI). Hermon MTC is controlled by the Constitution of Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar, which is approved and adapted for use in the United Kingdom by the Sabha through The Diocese of North America and Europe. The Governing Document is dated 01 April 2010. ## MANAGEMENT Hermon MTC is a Parish of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar, which has its head office in Tiruvalla, Kerala, India and reports to the Diocese of North America and Europe in the region. The Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar is led by Marthoma Metropolitan, His Grace The Most Rev. Dr. Theodosius Mar Thoma Metropolitan who resides at Church Headquarters, Poolatheen, Thiruvalla, Kerala. Hermon MTC belongs to the UK & Europe Zone, which administers the local governance of the Church in the region. The Diocesan Bishop, Rt Rev Dr Isaac Mar Philoxenos Episcopa who resides at Sinai Mar Thoma Centre, New York, USA supervises the regional administration subject to the approval of the Metropolitan. Locally, Hermon MTC is managed by its Trustees, also called Executive Committee Members, that are elected by the General Body. Vicar of Church acts as the President of Executive Committee. ## VICAR Hermon MTC are blessed to have a fulltime resident Vicar to provide pastoral care to the members of the church and the community around the Midlands region. Rev. Saju Chacko is serving as the Vicar of the Church since May 2019. The Church is very grateful to have Achen and his family with us. ## TRUSTEES / EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Executive Committee members or Trustees ensure day-to-day running and maintenance of Hermon MTC in accordance to the Constitution of Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar. The trustees are all individuals. The Vicar of Hermon Mar Thoma Church also holds the position of the President. Except for the President and the representatives to the Sabha Mandalam and the Diocesan Assembly, all the other members are elected by the general body or appointed by their respective organisations on an annual basis. The representatives to the Sabha Mandalam and the Diocesan Assembly of the parent church are elected, and the terms of office to these bodies are for a period of three years. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK 2022-23 Page 5 ## GOVERNANCE ## COUNCIL OF MAR THOMA PARISHES IN UK & EUROPE The Council of Mar Thoma Parishes in UK and Europe, a charity by its own right, is a UK & Europe zone’s administrative organization of the Mar Thoma Church acting as zonal office for effective directorial coordination between the headquarters in Tiruvalla, India and the parishes and congregations of the European Region. The Zonal Bishop, Rt Rev Dr Isaac Mar Philoxenos Episcopa is the President of Council. President, Vice-president, Secretary, Trustee Finance, Trustee Accounts and Diocesan Assembly Member from Hermon MTC represents Councils’ General Body. ## GENERAL BODY All persons whose names are borne on the Hermon MTC register who receive holy communion in the parish and who have completed 18 years of age and whose parish membership has not been barred in any disciplinary proceeding, by appropriate authority, are entitled to be the members of the General Body. ## MEMBERSHIP As of 31[st] March 2023, there are 132 families who are registered as members or member families. ## AUDITORS Mr Abraham Varghese and Mr Monish Varghese were appointed as internal auditors for the year 2022-23. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK 2022-23 Page 6 ## TRUSTEES RESPONSIBILITIES ## Statement of Trustee’s Responsibilities The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities Act 2011 and the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008. Notwithstanding the explicit requirement in the extant statutory regulations, the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008, to prepare the financial statements in accordance with the SORP 2005, however since the SORP 2005 has been withdrawn, the Trustees have determined to interpret this responsibility as requiring them to follow current best practice and prepare the accounts according to the FRS 102 SORP 2015. In particular, charity law requires the Trustees, if they prepare accounts on an accruals basis, to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity as at the end of the financial year and of the surplus or deficit of the charity. In preparing those financial statements the Trustees are required to, - Prepare the accounts in accordance with United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice (United Kingdom Accounting Standards and applicable law). - Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently. - Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent. - Prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in business. - State whether applicable accounting standards and statements of recommended practice have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements. The law requires that the trustees must not approve the accounts unless they are satisfied that they give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the surplus or deficit of the charity for the year. The Trustees are also responsible for maintaining adequate accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and which are sufficient to show and explain the charity’s transactions and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with regulations made under the charity legislation. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. The Trustees are also responsible for the contents of the Trustees’ report, and the statutory responsibility of the Independent Examiner in relation to the Trustees’ report is limited to examining the report and ensuring that, on the face of the report, there are no material inconsistencies with the figures disclosed in the financial statements. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK 2022-23 Page 7 ## PERFORMANCE AND OUTLOOK ## Purpose Oriented Activities This section summarises the main the main activities undertaken by the church during the year 2021-22 to achieve its constitutionally declared purposes that include the spiritual enrichment of its members and participation in attending to the needs of the community during this year. With the Grace of our Lord Jesus, it has been the privilege of Hermon MTC to serve the Mar Thoma diaspora community in the Midlands area for past 16 years. We thank God for his immense blessing and pray that he continues to guide us to thrive in his Ministry in the years to come. The year 2022-23 is the year, the world emerged fully from the COVID-19 pandemic and countries almost fully removed all restrictions on their populations. But the challenges that the world faced during this year are not any less, the war in Ukraine has raged on for a year with no sign of resolution, the world saw one of the most devastating earthquakes of modern times in Turkey & Syria killing more than 50000 people, there are other tragedies unfolding all across the globe that haven’t been much publicised. The UK has seen a fair share of turmoil too. The passing of Her Highness Queen Elizabeth II on 8[th] of September 2022 after almost 71 years on the throne was a momentous time of sorrow for the country. Most of the population had only know her as the monarch. We at Hermon Mar Thoma honoured her life and prayed for her immediate family and the country as a whole. The cost-of-living crisis has been affecting almost everyone and there is unrest in every walk of life and resolutions seemingly difficult to come by. However, during these turbulent times, we have seen God’s miracles all around us and in our personal lives, we praise him for all his mercies on all of us. A report on these activities is summarized as below. ## **WORSHIP SERVICES** In the past year we have completely gone to our routine in-person services. We have had regular Holy communion services, in English on the 1[st] & 3[rd] Sundays & in Malayalam on 2[nd] , 4[th] & 5[th] Sundays. These are a great source of fellowship, comfort, and strength to all the members and guest who attend the service. This year we have seen a large number of new arrivals in our area, both people who come for employment and studies, we have been blessed with their presence at our services. Our Vicar, Rev Saju Chacko has worked relentlessly in co-ordinating these services, welcoming new arrivals and assisting with their needs. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK Page 8 2022-23 ## PERFORMANCE AND OUTLOOK ## OUTREACH SERVICES **Derby Outreach Service** : - Holy Communion Services held in Derby on the 2[nd] Saturdays, once in 3 months, have continued, these have been well attended by the Derby - Burton on Trent – Nottingham area members of our church and other guests from the local area. This continues to be a blessed experience for all and helps those attend to be connected to the parish. **Leicester Outreach Service** : - Taking in to account the significant increase in new families that have arrived in Leicester area over the past couple of years and the difficulty that they were finding to travel for the Sunday worship, an Outreach service at Leicester was commenced in January 2023. These Holy Communion Services take place, monthly, on the 4[th] Saturday. These services are held at St Andrew’s Church, Hinckley Road Leicester LE3 3PF. They have been well attended by the Leicester area members of our church and other guests from the local area. This has proven to be a blessed experience for all and helps those attend to be connected to the parish. ## **GREAT LENT 2022 AND PASSION WEEK SERVICES** The Great Lent in 2022 ran from the 27[th] of February to 17[th] of April. As per the Liturgy of the Mar Thoma Church we had daily Sandhya Namaskaram prayers (Evening prayer meetings), these were conducted on the online platform as the pandemic was still restricting normal activities. All members actively participated in these prayers. Many families, the Sevika Sangham, Youth Fellowship, and Sunday school led the Lent meditations. These were blessed opportunities to dwell on our Lord’s mighty mercies to humankind, reflect on His presence in our Lives & to re-evaluate our relationship with our Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ. We had the Mid-Lent Service on 23rd March 2022 on the online platform led by Rev Saju Chacko. The 40th Friday Holy Communion Service was held on 8[th] April at St Mary’s Hobs Moat Hall . The Hosanna Holy Communion Service was held 11[th] April. We had in-person Sandyanamaskaram (Evening worship) prayers on 11[th] & 12[th] at St Mary’s Hobs Moat and on 13[th] at Trinity Methodist Church, Oadby, Leicester. The Pessaha or Maundy Thursday Holy Communion was held at 7.30pm on 14[th] April, followed by the Good Friday service at 9.00am on 15th and the Easter Sunday Holy Communion service was at 7.00am on 17[th] April. All these services were well attended and received by the congregation & guests. On the 16th of April our Diocesan Bishop Rt Rev Dr Isaac Mar Philexonos led the Passion day recital virtually via Zoom platform. This was organised by the UK-Europe Zone and our parish participated in various parts of the recital. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK Page 9 2022-23 ## PERFORMANCE AND OUTLOOK ## **Daily Lent Meditations** As part of the Great Lent, our Youth and Sunday School produced daily Lent meditation audio clips which was circulated to all members on the digital platform. This was a great initiative by our Sunday School and Youth organisations. The messages posted were touching and meaningful, they reflected the understanding of the bible and its message imbibed by our youngsters, these were well-received by our members. ## **15th PARISH DAY** We had our 15[th] Parish Day on the 8[th] of May 2022, the Very Rev VT John was the chief guest & Rev MJ Cherian also graced the occasion with his presence. We celebrated the 15 years of our existence as a Parish of the Mar Thoma Church in the UK. On the occasion Tithe was collected. There was a special dedication service for our youth who were about to take their Board exams. We also honoured our Senior members on the occasion by celebrating those had completed 70years or 40 years of married life. This was a blessed experience for all who attended. ## **VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL** The Vacation Bible School was conducted in-person this year after a gap of 2 years. Rev Matthews George and Christina Mathew Kochamma were the leaders at this year’s VBS, the theme for the year was **Ambassadors of Christ** . The program ran from June 2[nd] to June 5[th] , the first 3days were held at St Stephens Indian Orthodox Church Brays Road, Sheldon B26 2RR and the final day with the concluding meeting & rally was held at St Mary’s Hobs Moat Hall, Solihull B92 8PN. 63 Children registered and participated in the VBS. Mrs Sheeba George was the convener for this year’s VBS, she along with our Vicar Rev Saju Chacko, the Sunday School team and volunteers put up a memorable few days for the children. The Children collected a charity fund of £345/- which was donated to the Ronald McDonald House. The occasion was a blessing to all who attended, and the children definitely enjoyed their time but above all learnt how important it is to be ambassador of Christ and how to live lives that would reflect his teachings of love and compassion at every point in this increasing fractious world that we live in. ## **FATHER’S DAY & CHURCH BARBEQUE** Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19[th] . Special thanksgiving prayers were offered during the Holy Communion service. After the service we had a church barbeque in the grounds of St Mary’s Hobs Moat Hall, Solihull. All families participated enthusiastically, and it was a very enjoyable time for one and all. ## **EPISCOPAL VISIT & FIRST HOLY COMMUNION** Dr Isaac Mar Philoxenos, our Diocesan Bishop, visited our parish on the 26[th] of June. On the occasion he celebrated the Holy Communion and administered First Holy Communion to 19 of our youngsters( a further 2 more received the First Holy Communion separately). The service was held at King Edward VI School, Five ways Birmingham B32 4BT. Thirumeni spent time with the congregation. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK Page 10 2022-23 ## PERFORMANCE AND OUTLOOK He also took time to meet and talk to the Executive Committee team and led a Dedication service for the Commitee. ## **PARISH PICNIC** On the 27[th] of July a parish picnic was organised by the couple fellowship under the leadership of Mrs Reeba George at Playland Fun Park Stourport-on-Severn. The day was fun filled with various games and activities with traditional Kerala food served. Both children & adults alike had a wonderful time. ## **STUDENTS’ THANKSGIVING & DEDICATION SERVICE** The Students’ Thanksgiving and Dedication services was held on Sunday, September 4[th] , 2022 before the start of the new academic year. All children starting school, entering new academic years at school & universities along with the teachers amongst our congregation including the Sunday school teachers were upheld in prayers and blessed during the service. As a part of thanksgiving service, a special offertory was collected. An amount of £1342/- was raised. We thank all families and individuals for their generous contributions. As has been our practice over the past two years following the church’s undertaking to support three children in their all-round development till the age of 18, from Abhayam Children’s Home, Kottarakara, Kerala, part of the money raised was donated on this behalf. ## **SPECIAL PRAYERS IN REMEMBRANCE OF THE LATE HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II** During the Holy Communion Service of 11[th] September special remembrance prayers were offered on the sad demise of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. On this occasion we at Hermon Mar Thoma Church joined the rest of the country in remembering and thanking God Almighty for her life and service. **A minute’s silence was observed remembering Her Majesty’s life.** Prayers were also offered for His Majesty King Charles III as he assumes office as the new sovereign. ## **SEVIKA SANGHAM SUNDAY SERVICE & ONASADYA** The Sevika Sangham Sunday was celebrated on the 11[th] of September. The members of the Sevika Sangham (Women’s fellowship) assisted in various parts of the Holy Communion service. Mercy Kochamma delivered the message on the occasion. Following the service Onasadya, a traditional Kerala style feast was served to commemorate the Harvest festival in Kerala. The Sevika Sangham also organised a pickle sale on the day. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK 2022-23 Page 11 PERFORMANCE AND OUTLOOK ## **SENIOR CITIZEN SUNDAY** The 18[th] of September was celebrated as Senior Citizen Sunday. Our senior members helped with the Holy Communion service. Our Seniors who had turned 70 during the year and who had completed 40 years of married life were honoured. ## **ZONAL SUNDAY** The 2[nd] of October 2022 was celebrated as Zonal Sunday. On occasion Rev Varghese Koshy from Nazareth Mar Thoma Church, Dublin visited our parish as part of the Pulpit Exchange programme on the UK-Europe Zone. This is undertaken to make the congregation aware of the programme and activities undertaken by the Zone to promote and facilitate the spiritual nurturing of the flock of the Mar Thoma church in the region. ## **HARVEST FESTIVAL** A Special Thanksgiving and Holy Communion service was held on 9[th] October 2022. This was an occasion to look back on the wonderful mercies God showered on us in the past year. This service was well attended by all members. During Harvest festival the members of the congregation brought in their first fruit offerings(donations), these were entered into charity auctions. There were also charitable sales through food stalls. The congregation contributed generously toward the Harvest offertory. The total offertory and donations received by way of the charity auction & charity food sale for the Harvest festival was £20898/- ## **YOUTH SUNDAY** Youth Sunday was celebrated on 16[th] October. The members of the Youth Leagues assisted in various parts of the service. Mr Sam Mathew delivered the sermon on the occasion. ## **FAMILY RETREAT AND FAMILY SUNDAY** The Parish Family Retreat away weekend was held on the 21[st] , 22[nd] and 23[rd] October 2022 at Cefn Lea Park, Dolfor, Mid Wales. Rev Merin Mathew was leader at the retreat. On 23[rd] we had Holy Communion service which was commemorated as the Family Sunday. The retreat was in part an informal fellowship with games, talent displays. The retreat was a blessed experience for all who attended. 104 participants attended the retreat. Mrs Baby John, our Edavaka Mission representative was the convenors for the event and made all arrangements and made the event a big success. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK Page 12 2022-23 PERFORMANCE AND OUTLOOK ## **CAROL ROUNDS** Door to Door Carol rounds is a Christmas time tradition that had to avoided for the past couple of years owing to the pandemic. We resumed the service to spread the message and joy of Christmas. This year with the increased number of Parish Members and the wider area to cover, each Prayer Group did the Christmas Carol Rounds in their respective areas. Rev Saju Chacko our vicar and Office bearers accompanied the rounds where and when possible. This was a blessed experience and fellowship for the congregation, many families from all areas joined the rounds to spread the joy. As a Christmas gift, the Church presented all members with a Parish Calendar. On 3[rd] December Burton on Trent, Derby, Nottingham area & Walsall-Wolverhampton-Stafford-Stoke on Trent area had their round. Birmingham-Solihull-Worcester area had their rounds on 4[th] ,9[th] ,10[th] & 11[th] December. On 17[th] December, Coventry-Warwick-Banbury area had their rounds. Leicester area had their rounds on 15[th] , 16[th] , 19[th] & 20[th] December. Carol rounds offertory was collected by the respective area prayer groups during their rounds. ## **CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS** The Christmas Carol service was held on 18[th] December after the Holy Communion Service. The choir led the Christmas Carol celebration with melodious carol songs all organizations contributed meaningful programmes during the celebrations. Rev Sunny Thomas was the chief guest on the occasion, he participated in the Holy Communion service. On Christmas day, the 25[th] of December we had the Holy Communion service at 7am. ## **NEW YEAR WATCH NIGHT SERVICE** Holy Communion and Watch-night service was held on the 31[st] of December from 9pm onwards, led by our vicar Rev Saju Chacko. Many members took the opportunity to share their testimonies and to thank God Almighty for all the blessing showered on them. ## **PARISH CONVENTION** We had our annual Parish Convention over 3 days in February on 17[th] ,18[th] & 19[th] . On the 17th, the 1st day of the convention was held at Binley Woods Village Hall, Rugby Road, Coventry CV3 2AX. On the 18th, the 2nd day of the convention was held at Littleover Baptist Church, Thornhill Rd, Derby DE23 6FZ. On the 19th, the final day of the convention was held along with the Holy communion service at St Mary’s Hobs Moat Hall. On the final day a Family Dedication service was held too. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK Page 13 2022-23 PERFORMANCE AND OUTLOOK ## **GREAT LENT 2023** The Great Lent 2023 commenced on the 19[th] of February. Evening prayers (Sandyanamskaram) were held in the respective area prayer groups on Fridays and Saturdays from March 15[th] virtual online meeting were arranged, in addition. All these were well attended by many in the congregation, and some provided blessed messages from the word of God On March 31[st] we had the 40[th] Friday Holy communion to mark the end of Christ’s 40 days of trials in the wilderness. ## **MOTHER’S DAY** On 19[th] March, special prayers were offered during the Holy Communion to celebrate our mothers. Following the service, the Youth League presented a song to honour all the Mums in the congregation ## **PRAYER MEETINGS** Following the relaxation of restrictions brought in during the pandemic, face to face area prayer meetings were resumed to pray, share & dwell on the Word of God together. These fellowships were a source of divine solace for everyone in our congregation. Some virtual meetings were retained as they helped avoid the need to travel and people could meet during the weekdays if needed. ## Area Prayer Meetings We have resumed Area prayer meetings across all area groups. This were held in homes and by renting halls in local areas. These were led by our Vicar Rev Saju Chacko has been well attended and has been a blessing for all local area prayer groups. Walsall Wolverhampton & Stafford Area meet on the 1[st] Saturdays, Birmingham Solihull &Worcester Area on 2[nd] Fridays evening or 2[nd] Saturdays morning, Burton Derby Nottingham Area on 2[nd] Saturdays evening, Coventry Warwick & Banbury Area on 3[rd] Saturdays and Leicester Area on 4[th] Saturdays. Bible study: Virtual Bible study and Prayer sessions were conducted twice weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays till mid July 2022 These sessions are a source spiritual nourishment to all who are able to attend them. ## Chain prayer Under the leadership of the Sevika Sangam chain prayers were held to dwell on the prayer requests received from the congregation and the wider community, these were held twice a week. God Almighty acknowledges to supplication of his faithful. The Sevika Sangam also participated in an alternate week Zonal Chain prayer. Organisation Prayer Meetings Edavaka Mission & Sevika Sangham held periodic prayer meetings at various residence across the congregation. ## **PARTICIPATION IN UK-EUROPE ZONAL ACTIVITIES** Hermon Mar Thoma Church is extremely proud to be an active part of the functioning of the UK-Europe Zone of the Diocese of North America & Europe both in it spiritual mission and administrative activities. The church has made substantial contribution to the various Zonal programmes such as the Passion Recital Programme, Weekly Online Intercessory prayer meetings, Mar Thoma Meet, Zonal Sunday School , Zonal Christmas Carol and Zonal Centre inauguration and felicitation of His Grace Theodosius Mar Thoma Metropolitan. Our congregation actively participated in these activities. It is a privilege to have our members, Mr Thomas Abraham (Zonal Treasurer) and Mr Sherry Matthews (Chief Editor for Echo: Quarterly Zonal Publication) taking key administrative positions within Zone. Few of our choir members are also part of the Zonal Choir. We as a parish shall continue to contribute to the activities and development of the Zone in its mission to spread and uphold the message and light of our Saviour Jesus Christ by nurturing and supporting it member parishes and their congregations. ## **ORGANISATION REPORTS** ## **SUNDAY SCHOOL** The presence of the Great Shepherd in our midst, within our church and the Sunday school ministry and the kindness, gentleness and love of ALL have enabled Hermon Mar Thoma church Sunday school to complete another successful year. We are blessed with the leadership and guidance from our vicar, Rev Saju Chacko from May 2019. We follow The North America and Europe diocese Sunday school curriculum. Currently there are 64 students registered in 12 classes. Every Sunday, before the Holy Communion service, the Sunday school children and teachers meet with delight for common session at 9.45am. We take this time together to think on mercies past, and ways to affirm the Word of God as the foundation for living the Christian life through activities including songs, bible reading, stories and games. This will then be followed by in-person classes which resumed in September 2022. Occasional online lessons for senior classes are held for catching up with Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK 2022-23 Page 15 ## PERFORMANCE AND OUTLOOK the work or any lost time in-person. The Sunday school aims for children to feel they are important members of the Hermon church family and precious children of God. On the 3rd of July 2022, our Sunday school students sat the annual UK & Europe zonal exams. We are proud of all children for their great effort and thank parents for the immense support in preparing the children for the exams. It was indeed a great blessing for us all to join, in-person, for the 2022 VBS, from 2nd to 5th June, with our vibrant VBS directors, Rev Mathews George and Mrs Christina Mathews with the theme, Ambassadors of Christ. Our Sunday school children, teachers and parents attended the North Centre World Sunday School Day celebration on Saturday, 5th November 2022. The Sunday school children took the lead in various roles during the service on the World Sunday School Day celebration at Hermon Mar Thoma church, on the 6th of November 2022 and the sermon was delivered by Mrs Tania Thomas. During the Lent season 2023, Sunday school children from Grade 4 onward along with our Youths lead on a daily devotion based on our bible reading portion for the Lent season. The short messages were shared on the Hermon MTC Whatsapp group every morning from 19th Feb to 10th April. So wonderful indeed has our Heavenly Father accepted and blessed all our effort to build up the Kingdom of Our God Almighty through teachers and parents of our church. May the Lord Almighty enable us as a Sunday school and as a church to continue the Great Commission to Teach the Gospel—the Good News of Jesus Christ. ## **COUPLE FELLOWSHIP** The Couple fellowship has been working with the church to improve the fellowship between all members. As part of this initiative, the following events were organized: Father's Day & Barbeque: In connection with Father's Day, a barbeque was organized on the 19th of June 2022 after church with full participation from all our fathers. Every prayer group actively took part in the event and also in bringing the items that were allocated to them. It was a wonderful time and fellowship after church getting to know the new members of the church and at the same time enjoying the variety of food’s prepared by our Fathers. Parish Picnic: A one-day picnic to Playland Fun Park at Stourport-on-Severn was organized on the 23rd of July 2022. It was a fun-filled day with games and entertainments and in addition to it the families had the opportunities to go on boat rides and other fun rides as well. Overall, it was a pleasant day to spend wonderful time with family and friends of the wider Hermon Mar Thoma Church family. Altar flowers is a new initiative by the couple fellowship started from the month of December 2022. Families have been voluntarily supporting in bringing fresh flowers for the altar every alternate week for the Sunday Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK 2022-23 Page 16 ## PERFORMANCE AND OUTLOOK Worship services. This is usually taken up by the family that is celebrating a birthday or anniversary during that week/month or sometimes even random. Our Gratitude & special thanks to Rev. Saju Chacko for all his supports and guidance throughout in making these events a success. Above all, Thanking God almighty for his grace and blessings throughout. ## **EDAVAKA MISSION** The Edavaka mission’s role is to nurture the spiritual growth of the parish. Under the able and proactive leadership of our vicar Rev Saju Chacko, the organisation continued to deliver on by organising prayer meetings the various area prayer groups, coordinating the Parish Convention. Prayer meeting were held in coordination with the Sevka Sangham, these were held at the residences of Mr Mathew Samuel-Mrs Jessy Mathew, Mr Aby Chandy-Mrs Reeba George & Dr Sudeep Thomas-Dr Raghey Kurian. The Edavaka Mission also help organise the Family Retreat. ## **CHOIR** The choir has been an indispensable component of Hermon Mar Thoma parish by actively supporting the Holy Qurbana and leading the congregation in drawing closer to the presence of God through songs and worship. As well as leading the singing ministry of our Church during the Holy Communion/Worship service each week, the choir also leads the congregation through songs and worship for the passion service. Our choir is well established and plays an integral part in the Church services and prayers. In the year 20212022, we had 37 actively participating members who lead the worship under the leadership and guidance of our talented choir leaders. The choir celebrated 22nd May 2022 as its dedication day. This blessed Holy Communion service was led by Rev M J Cherian and Rev Saju Chacko. A dedication service was held for the choir members during which a special song was sung as a sign of commitment towards the worship ministry. It is commendable that our choir had some notable achievements during the year 2022/2023. _**Garshom TV Ecumenical Carol competition** :_ The choir took part in the Joy to the World Christmas Carol singing competition held on the 10th of December 2022, organised by Gershom TV. We sang our heart out and won the first prize, notably claiming the cash prize of £1000. _**Zonal Participation** :_ Hermon Choir is no stranger when it comes to participation in Mar Thoma Church, UK & Europe Zonal activities. Whether face to face or virtual, our choir contributes whole heartedly to support the zonal activities. On Tuesday 27th December 2022, our choir participated in the Zonal Christmas Carol service held in St James Mar Thoma church, New Eltham. Few of our members also actively supported the zonal choir during the zonal office dedication service on 4th March 2023. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK 2022-23 Page 17 ## PERFORMANCE AND OUTLOOK _Christmas Carol Service:_ The choir led Christmas Carol Service held on the 18th of December 2022. Dedication of our choir leaders and choir members in making this a truly memorable experience are commendable. _Choir audition:_ Hermon choir held its second audition on 12 March 2023, as the DSMC guidelines specify choir audition after every 5 years. Total number of choir members in the newly formed choir was set as 45 as our church has seen an explosive growth this year. Hermon Mar Thoma choir is registered with the DSMC, the music department of the Mar Thoma church. Hence the administration of choir is carried out as per DSMC guidelines. The leadership and guidance of Rev. Saju Chacko as well as the dedication of our choir leaders and choir members, have been instrumental in ensuring that the choir was able to faithfully support its mission in the church. The choir committee has also met various times in the year and has been actively involved in making informed decisions that enables the success of our ministry. We are grateful to our God almighty for enabling us to graciously use the talents he has blessed us with. May He enable us to continue to be effective in the Hermon Church Choir ministry. ## **SEVIKA SANGAM** The Sevika Sangham has continued to fulfil its role of helping in all spheres of our church life and upholding the various needs of the parish and all its individuals by means of our prayers and physical assistance where needed and possible. Sevika Sangham members also got involved actively in all services of the church and especially dedicating their time in prayer fellowships and willingly participating in it. Annual General body meeting held on 23/03/2022 after the service, report has been passed and new office bearers been elected. We held our parish Sevika Sangam day on September 11th, 2022, our Sevikasangam members led the service and Mrs.Mercy Kochamma delivered an inspirational message. Regular Sangham meeting is held on 2nd Sunday of every month. Sevika Sangham members been participated in Zonal Sevika Sangham Quiz competition, and we won the second prize in it. As Sevika sangam we actively participate and contribute to parish Harvest festival, in auction and also in food sale. We also have Little Drops and MANNA projects to raise the fund for charity and church development. We had a Pickle sale last year which had contributed £662 to the church development fund. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK Page 18 2022-23 ## PERFORMANCE AND OUTLOOK We continued our chain prayer which started during the pandemic period. All the members have been participating sincerely and been willing to dedicate their time for this amid their daily busy schedules. It has been of immense strength and comfort for all those involved. We would like to thank all members for their continued support and pray that God Almighty will continue to guide and strengthen us in all our endeavours for the growth of our church and help us to be a blessing to many. ## **YOUTH FELLOWSHIP** The Hermon Youth is a vibrant and active community of young people dedicated to their faith and service to the community. Over the financial year 22/23, the Hermon Youth has been engaged in various events and activities aimed at building fellowship, promoting growth in faith, and community involvement. On the 15th of October 2022, the Hermon Youth attended the Zonal Youth Fellowship One Day Retreat at All Saints Mar Thoma Church in Peterborough. The retreat was a great opportunity for young people from across the zone to come together in shared fellowship and listen to the word of God. The theme of the retreat was ‘Youth: Inheritors of Faith’, and the speaker for the retreat was Rev. Johnson M. John. The retreat involved taking part in a worship service, activities including singing sessions and games, and forming valuable friendships and networks that will serve them for years to come. The Hermon Youth also participated in a webinar on the 22nd of October 2022, which was part of a two-part series aimed at addressing the addiction problem and discussing ways in which it can be eradicated. The first session of the webinar was for parents and aimed to raise awareness of the issue of addiction and ways to prevent it. The session was a great success, and it is hoped that it will help address the addiction problem in the community. On the 26th of November 2022, the Hermon Youth participated in the Inter-Church TEAM Triathlon competition, hosted by the Zonal Youth Fellowship at the Coton Centre in Tamworth. The young people put up a great show and performed exceptionally well in various competitions, including football, tug of war, relay, and aptitude test and general knowledge. The Hermon Youth teams achieved first place in football (Under 18s) and second place in tug of war (Under 18s) and tug of war (Over 18s) and relay (Over 18s). Both our singing teams performed wonderfully, and we are proud of the superb effort made by our contestants for aptitude test and general knowledge. Throughout the financial year 22/23, every third Sunday was youth-led. The young people took on various roles in leading the worship service, including leading prayers, delivering sermons, leading singing sessions, and also organizing Lent meditation and reflection sessions. This gave our young people an opportunity to grow in their faith and develop their leadership skills. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK Page 19 2022-23 ## PERFORMANCE AND OUTLOOK In conclusion, I am pleased to report that our young people have been actively engaged and participated in various events and activities throughout the financial year 22/23. These events have been instrumental in promoting fellowship, growth in faith, and community involvement among our young people. We are proud of their dedication to their faith and commitment to serving the community. We look forward to the continued growth and development of our young people and their continued involvement in upcoming events and activities in the future financial year. ## **HELPING HAND** As a charitable organisation it is our responsibility to identify people in our community who are in need and assist them where possible. Helping Hand is a charitable programme of Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands UK introduced in the last year to streamline the charitable activities of the church. The project offers us an opportunity to reflect on the free, generous, and “undeserved” divine love that we have received in our lives. Our church and its members have been in the forefront of supporting various local and abroad (India) charitable activities of the Malankara Mar Thoma Church. During 2021-22, as an initial step we kept this social aid project to focus especially on the following areas and are designed only towards our charitable work in India and locally. - Charitable work in India - Medical Aid, Education Aid, Marriage Aid - Charitable work in UK - Support to local UK Charities/Non-profit Organisations, Crisis Relief Aid We have distributed total of £1000.00 to some families who has requested for financial help due to sudden demise of their family member. In association with our Sunday School, we have donated £450.00 to Abhayam to support the education of 3 children in Kerala. In response towards the war crisis in Ukraine, we have initiated an appeal in association with Red Cross UK and the response from our members were commendable. We as a church were able to collect essentials, clothing, and a cash total £3000. We, Helping Hand Team of Hermon Mar Thoma Church extend our sincere thanks to all our members for the support you have provided throughout this year. We also request all our members to contribute towards these charitable projects to the following bank account, so that we can ensure that we were able to extend our support to many people who are in need. ## **CHURCH DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE** The General Body on 21st July 2019 appointed the current Church Development Committee for the purpose of buying a Church and Parsonage. This committee have been working tirelessly to achieve this objective. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK Page 20 2022-23 ## PERFORMANCE AND OUTLOOK Having purchased the parsonage in May 2021, during this financial year, the committee turned its attention to need of buying a property that we could develop to be our church. Suitable and affordable properties that became available were far and few in between. An offer was made on the United Reformed Church, Halesowen and our offer was accepted, however as timescales required could not be strictly met the vendor withdrew the offer. Another offer has been made at the end of March 2023 on the United Reformed Church, Hatherton Road, Walsall (at time of publication of this report we have been told our bid was unsuccessful). The current Church Development Committee reviewed its activities and assessed various factors that may influence the aim of procuring a property for our church and has provided recommendations that should be considered & discussed by the General Body of the Church. It recommended that the team should be reconstituted and should be given succinct instruction on its remit and aspects of search criteria. A new team has been selected and will assume charge when the new Executive committee takes reins of the running of the Church activities. Unrestricted fund in excess of £40,000 at the year-end would be transferred to the Designated funds. ## ELECTION OF THE NEW EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBERS 2023-2024 The election of the office bearers for 2023-2024 took place during General body meeting on 26[th ] February 2023 at St Marys Hobs Moat Hall. The list of elected members is given on page 51. The organisational representatives were elected by the general bodies of the respective organisations. ## SUMMARY Under the leadership of Rev Saju Chacko, we have now established a strong presence and participation in the region with several new members joining this year. Rev Saju Chacko has been extremely dynamic and his ability to reach out to existing and new members has helped the church grow in the community. He has worked relentlessly in co-ordinating these services. All in-person are being well attended by the members. This year we also welcomed many new members and students to our church worship services. After 4 years of service in our parish will be leaving at the end of April 2023 God was extremely gracious to us and kept us all safe, nurtured us and comforted us during the last 24 months of the global pandemic. We resumed face to face services from September 2021 onwards and the church has only gone strength to strength in the last 7 months. The Trustees have had to regard the charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit in managing the activities of the charity.
