## TRUSTEES RESPONSIBILITIES

## Statement of Trustee’s Responsibilities

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities Act 2011 and the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008. Notwithstanding the explicit requirement in the extant statutory regulations, the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008, to prepare the financial statements in accordance with the SORP 2005, however since the SORP 2005 has been withdrawn, the Trustees have determined to interpret this responsibility as requiring them to follow current best practice and prepare the accounts according to the FRS 102 SORP 2015.

In particular, charity law requires the Trustees, if they prepare accounts on an accruals basis, to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity as at the end of the financial year and of the surplus or deficit of the charity. In preparing those financial statements the Trustees are required to,

- Prepare the accounts in accordance with United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice (United Kingdom Accounting Standards and applicable law).

- Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently.

- Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent.

- Prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in business.

- State whether applicable accounting standards and statements of recommended practice have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements.

The law requires that the trustees must not approve the accounts unless they are satisfied that they give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the surplus or deficit of the charity for the year.

The Trustees are also responsible for maintaining adequate accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and which are sufficient to show and explain the charity’s transactions and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with regulations made under the charity legislation. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

The Trustees are also responsible for the contents of the Trustees’ report, and the statutory responsibility of the Independent Examiner in relation to the Trustees’ report is limited to examining the report and ensuring that, on the face of the report, there are no material inconsistencies with the figures disclosed in the financial statements.

## PURPOSE ORIENTED ACTIVITIES

## Purpose Oriented Activities

This section summarises the main the main activities undertaken by the church during the year 2021-22 to achieve its constitutionally declared purposes that include the spiritual enrichment of its members and participation in attending to the needs of the community during this year.

With the Grace of our Lord Jesus, it has been the privilege of Hermon MTC to serve the Mar Thoma diaspora community in the Midlands area for past 15 years. We thank God for his immense blessing and pray that he continues to guide us to thrive in his Ministry in the years to come.

The year 2021-22 will be remembered as a year where all countries around the globe were re-building and trying their best to adjust to the new normal with the diminishing intensity of the COVID pandemic. In February 2022, we also witnessed the start in the war in Ukraine which has impacted many lives in Ukraine and also the UK. During these turbulent times, we have seen God’s miracles performed around us and we give God Almighty all the gratitude God has been very merciful to all our church members and his powerful hands can be seen working during this re-building phase.

A report on these activities is summarized as below.

## THANKSGIVING SERVICE IN MEMORY OF THE MOST REV DR PHILIPOSE MAR CHRYSOSTOM MAR THOMA VALIYA METROPOLITAN

This year, for the Mar Thoma Church, was particularly poignant as its leading steward in the service of our Lord was called back to His Heavenly presence.

On 5[th] May, 2021, our beloved Metropolitan the Most Rev. Dr Philipose Mar Chrysostom Mar Thoma Valiya Metropolitan, was called to his eternal home at the age of 103. His passing, especially during this unprecedented time, posed many challenges to the church and its faithful. His demise was a great loss not just to the Mar Thoma church, but also to the worldwide Christian community and the community at large.

His time as the Metropolitan will go down in history as a time when Mar Thoma church has grown beyond the shores of India and became a global entity.

Hermon MTC held a thanksgiving memorial service on 9th May 2021 immediately after the service. This blessed service was well attended, Mr Mathew Varughese (Mandalam Member) and Mr Oommen P Easow

## PURPOSE ORIENTED ACTIVITIES

During the Lent season 2022, Sunday school children from Grade 4 onward along with our Youths lead on a daily devotion based on our bible reading portion for the Lent season. The short messages were shared on the Hermon MTC WhatsApp group every morning from 27th Feb to 17th April. It is greatly encouraging to see how God has helped our church and the Sunday school team to continue and progress to develop children’s faith in unanticipated circumstances.

## CHOIR

The year 2021/22 has been a year of transition for the choir from the pre-pandemic phase, shifting our activities from online to face to face. This has enabled us to focus on what’s important and be inventive in our activities, so it contributed to the achievement of the aims and objectives of our Ministry.

Our choir is well established and plays an integral part in the Church services and prayers. At present we have 37 members in our choir and even during this transition phase we were able to lead the online and face to face worship under the leadership and guidance of our talented choir leaders. Our choir had some notable achievements during this phase such as securing third place in the Inter-Parish Songs’ Quiz competition held on the 13[th] of September 2021 and second place in the Joy to the World Christmas Carol singing competition held on the 11[th] of December 2021, winning the cash prize of £500. After a very uncertain and unsettling year, the Hermon choir was able to present and participate in face-to-face Christmas Carol Service on the 19th of December 2021. This was quite a feat as most of our practice sessions were held online and the dedication of all the choir members are commendable. We also actively took part in the virtual Passion Recital held by UKEurope zone on 16[th] April 2022. The Hermon Choir were also able to purchase a much-needed keyboard using the available funds for use during the church services.

The administration of choir is carried out as per DSMC guidelines and the leadership of Rev. Saju Chacko have been instrumental in ensuring smooth transition between virtual and face to face services. The committee has met various times in the year and has been actively involved towards the smooth functioning of our activities.

We are grateful to our God almighty for enabling us to graciously use the talents he has blessed us with. May He enable us to continue to be effective in the Hermon Church Choir ministry.

## VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

The UK & Europe Zonal 2021 VBS was held online with the theme ‘Let’s Rebuild the Walls’ from 29[th] -31[st] of July. Most of the children and teachers from Hermon MTC Sunday school attended the VBS and our Sunday school children actively took part and interacted with the leaders in devotion and other activities. This was a blessed opportunity for our children to learn from the word of God and interact with the wider Mar Thoma Sunday school community via online platform.

## YOUTH FELLOWSHIP

As the next generation of our church, the youth are a very important part of our fellowship. They are next leaders of our church, and at an impressionable stage of their lives, and it is our responsibility to ensure that grow as people and members of our church. In 2021, we as a church were starting to open back up, having

church services and some events in person. For youth this year also was a year of opening back up, starting to have some youth meetings in person. We are proud to be under the constant guidance of our vicar Rev Saju Chacko, who is blessed with the drive to lead us in the right direction. The youth have 52 members and have meetings once a month, on every 3rd Saturday of the month. Vice President: Gaius Sunny Thomson. Secretary: Matthew Varghese Alexander. Centre and Zonal Representative: Thomas K. Thomas. Treasurer: Sam Mathew. Youth meetings were a mix of online and in person meetings, being held after the church service. Youth Sunday was celebrated on Sunday the 17th of October 2021, with youth assisting in the service. The youth, along with the Sunday School took part in the lent season by giving daily devotions from bible passages and attended the daily lent prayer meetings. The youth also participated in the weekly Zonal English Sandhya Namaskaram, with our youth leading a service. The UK and Europe Mar Thoma Zonal Youth fellowship held many events this year; the monthly zonal meetings, zonal youth conference, youth retreat and convention, all of which Hermon Mar Thoma Church youth participated in.

We convey our special thanks to Rev Saju Chacko for his guidance and encouragement. Above all we thank God for all His blessings and mercies on this ministry and pray that His abounding mercies may continue in the years to come on all our youth. Above all we thank God for all His blessings and mercies on this ministry and pray that His abounding mercies may continue in the years to come on all our youth.

## PARTICIPATION IN UK-EUROPE ZONAL ACTIVITIES

Hermon Mar Thoma Church is extremely proud to be an active part of the functioning of the UK-Europe Zone of the Diocese of North America & Europe both in it spiritual mission and administrative activities.

The church has made substantial contribution to the various Zonal programmes such as the weekly online Intercessory prayer meetings, Zonal Convention, Zonal Sunday, Zonal Christmas Carol and Passion Recital Programme. Our congregation actively participated in these activities.

It is a privilege to have our members, Mr Thomas Abraham (Zonal Treasurer) and Mr Sherry Matthews (Chief Editor for Echo: Quarterly Zonal Publication) taking key administrative positions within Zone. We wish them all the very best in carrying out the responsibilities of these very important roles within the administration of the Zone

We as a parish will continue to contribute to the activities and development of the Zone in its mission to spread and uphold the message and light of our Saviour Jesus Christ by nurturing and supporting it member parishes and their congregations.

PURPOSE ORIENTED ACTIVITIES

## HELPING HAND

As a charitable organisation it is our responsibility to identify people in our community who are in need and assist them where possible. Helping Hand is a charitable programme of Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands UK introduced in the last year to streamline the charitable activities of the church. The project offers us an opportunity to reflect on the free, generous, and “undeserved” divine love that we have received in our lives. Our church and its members have been in the forefront of supporting various local and abroad (India) charitable activities of the Malankara Mar Thoma Church.

During 2021-22, as an initial step we kept this social aid project to focus especially on the following areas and are designed only towards our charitable work in India and locally

- Charitable work in India - Medical Aid, Education Aid, Marriage Aid

- Charitable work in UK - Support to local UK Charities/Non-profit Organisations, Crisis Relief Aid

We have distributed total of £1000.00 to some families who has requested for financial help due to sudden demise of their family member. In association with our Sunday School, we have donated £450.00 to Abhayam to support the education of 3 children in Kerala.

In response towards the war crisis in Ukraine, we have initiated an appeal in association with Red Cross UK and the response from our members were commendable. We as a church were able to collect essentials, clothing, and a cash total £3000.

We, Helping Hand Team of Hermon Mar Thoma Church extend our sincere thanks to all our members for the support you have provided throughout this year. We also request all our members to contribute towards these charitable projects to the following bank account, so that we can ensure that we were able to extend our support to many people who are in need.

## CHURCH DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

The General Body on 21[st] July 2019 appointed the (current) Church Development Committee for the purpose of buying a Church and Parsonage. This committee have been working tirelessly to achieve this objective.

During this financial year, the committee found 2 premises that would have been suitable and made recommendations to the General Body following which offers were made for them, but unfortunately both were not successful.

As this is a very acute need of our church, the committee calls for continued prayers and assistance in the search and fruition of this ambition by way of your expertise and financial support.

We thank the church development committee for their efforts and contribution towards the development of our church.

## PERFORMANCE AND OUTLOOK

## Performance and Outlook

## PERFORMANCE REVIEW

Hermon Mar Thoma Church has always encouraged its members to express their faith and given opportunity to take part in various charitable activities to promote their spiritual and emotional wellbeing. Regular Divine Services and Prayer meetings serve as foundation for growth and upliftment of the beneficiaries constantly throughout the year. Presence of locally resident vicar proved helpful in promoting regional bible study classes and /or cottage fellowship. Various sub-organisations also played its role of encouraging and sustaining the unity of community at all age groups.

During the past year, Hermon MTC witnessed an influx of new members in the region and who joined our worshiping community, 17 new families and individuals joined us.

PERFORMANCE AND OUTLOOK

## FINANCIAL ACTIVITY

The Parish is grateful for the wholehearted response of the members to the Stewardship campaign. The parish is wholly dependent on the voluntary contributions of members and friends to whom Hermon MTC is greatly indebted, for their financial support during the year under review.

## **The charity’s financial position at the end of the year ended 31 March 2022.**

The financial position of the charity at 31 March 2022 and comparatives for the prior period are detailed in the accounts and can be summarised as follows:-

||**2022 (£)**|**2021 (£)**|
|---|---|---|
|**Total Funds**|||
|Net Income for the year|13,009|50,096|
|Funds brought forward|338,225|288,129|
|**Total**|**351,234**|**338,225**|
|**Funds Allocation**|||
|Unrestricted Funds|109,812|84,933|
|Designated Revenue Funds|180,591|180,591|
|Revenue Restricted Funds|200|1,090|
|Fixed Asset Restricted Funds|60,631|71,611|
|**Total**|**351, 234**|**338,225**|

The board of trustees is satisfied that the charity's assets in each fund are available and adequate to fulfil its obligations in respect of each fund.

## RESERVE POLICY

**Designated Funds:** The funds are earmarked towards procuring the Church's own vicarage and / or worship place in the future.

**Fixed Asset Restricted Funds (Church Procurement Fund) :** These are funds that are specifically collected for the procurement of a Parish Church by means of purchasing an existing church or constructing a purposebuilt church.

**Unrestricted Funds:** The Parish shall set aside reserves to provide financial stability and the means to sustain, improve and develop its mission and objectives. As the flow of income is not uniform, reserves need to be set aside to meet expenses that are irregular in pattern. The Executive Committee has determined that the approximate level of free reserves should be equivalent to six months expenditure, approximately £40,000. Unrestricted fund in excess of £40,000 at the year-end would be transferred to the Designated funds.

## PERFORMANCE AND OUTLOOK

## SUMMARY

Under the leadership of Rev Saju Chacko, we have now established a strong presence and participation in the region with several new members joining this year. Rev Saju Chacko has been extremely dynamic and his ability to reach out to existing and new members has helped the church grow in the community.

God was extremely gracious to us and kept us all safe, nurtured us and comforted us during the last 24 months of the global pandemic. We resumed face to face services from September 2021 onwards and the church has only gone strength to strength in the last 7 months.

Our vicar, Rev Saju Chacko has worked relentlessly in co-ordinating these services. All in-person are being well attended by the members. This year we also welcomed many new members and students to our church worship services.

The Trustees have had regard to the charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit in managing the activities of the charity.

This report was approved by the board trustees on 6[th] November 2022
