Charity No : 1137185 Charity Name : Hermon Mar Thoma Church Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK 2020-21 Page 1 PURPOSE OBJECTIVES AND MISSION , ## Purpose, Objectives and Mission ## PURPOSE The purpose of the Charity is to advance Christian faith and develop a community rooted in biblical doctrine to lead a Christian life. ## OBJECTIVES The main objectives of the Church are to, - ➢ advance the Christian religion in the Midlands Region - ➢ provide its members with regular Christian worship services, in accordance with the traditions of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar - ➢ provide pastoral care and organize activities to promote the spiritual life of its members - ➢ make voluntary contributions for evangelistic and charitable work in the United Kingdom and abroad – especially India. ## MISSION The Mar Thoma Church defines itself as ‘Oriental in origin, Eastern in traditions, Episcopal in nature, Democratic in administration, Catholic in mission, Reformed in faith, Evangelical in outreach work and Ecumenical in vision. Each and every adult member of the Church is considered to be an Evangelist’. The Church may participate in collaborative programmes with other Churches with which it has communal relationships and also participate in all acceptable ecumenical relationships as a full member of the World Council of Churches (WCC), Churches Together in England (CTE) and Churches Together in Britain and Ireland (CTBI). Hermon MTC is controlled by the Constitution of Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar, which is approved and adapted for use in the United Kingdom by the Sabha through The Diocese of North America and Europe. The Governing Document is dated 01 April 2010. ## MANAGEMENT Hermon MTC is a Parish of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar, which has its head office in Tiruvalla, Kerala, India and reports to the Diocese of North America and Europe in the region. The Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar is led by Marthoma Metropolitan, His Grace The Most Rev. Dr. Theodosius Mar Thoma Metropolitan who resides at Church Headquarters, Poolatheen, Thiruvalla, Kerala. Hermon MTC belongs to the UK & Europe Zone, which administers the local governance of the Church in the region. The Diocesan Bishop, Rt Rev Dr Isaac Mar Philoxenos Episcopa who resides at Sinai Mar Thoma Centre, New York, USA supervises the regional administration subject to the approval of the Metropolitan. Locally, Hermon MTC is managed by its Trustees, also called Executive Committee Members, that are elected by the General Body. Vicar of Church acts as the President of Executive Committee. ## VICAR Hermon MTC are blessed to have a fulltime resident Vicar to shepherd the needs of members and the community around the Midlands region. Rev. Saju Chacko is serving as the Vicar of the Church since May 2019. The Church is very grateful to have Achen and his family with us. ## TRUSTEES / EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Executive Committee members or Trustees ensure day-to-day running and maintenance of Hermon MTC in accordance to the Constitution of Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar. The trustees are all individuals. The Vicar of Hermon Mar Thoma Church also holds the position of the President. Except for the President and the representatives to the Sabha Mandalam and the Diocesan Assembly, all the other members are elected by the general body or appointed by their respective organisations on an annual basis. The representatives to the Sabha Mandalam and the Diocesan Assembly of the parent church are elected, and the terms of office to these bodies are for a period of three years. They are elected by the General Body. The recruitment and appointment of Trustees are as per the Constitution of Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar. ## COUNCIL OF MAR THOMA PARISHES IN UK & EUROPE The Council of Mar Thoma Parishes in UK and Europe, a charity by its own right, is a UK & Europe zone’s administrative organization of the Mar Thoma Church acting as zonal office for effective directorial coordination between the headquarters in Tiruvalla, India and the parishes and congregations of the European Region. The Zonal Bishop, Rt Rev Dr Isaac Mar Philoxenos Episcopa is the President of Council. President, Vice-president, Secretary, Trustee Finance, Trustee Accounts and Diocesan Assembly Member from Hermon MTC represents Councils’ General Body. ## GENERAL BODY All persons whose names are borne on the Hermon MTC register who receive holy communion in the parish and who have completed 18 years of age and whose parish membership has not been barred in any disciplinary proceeding, by appropriate authority, are entitled to be the members of the General Body. ## MEMBERSHIP As of 31[st] March 2021, there are 90 families who are registered as members or member families. ## AUDITORS Mr Jiji Kurien and Mr Anil K Mathews were appointed as internal auditors for the year 2020-21. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK 2020-21 Page 5 ## TRUSTEES RESPONSIBILITIES ## Statement of Trustee’s Responsibilities The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities Act 2011 and the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008. Notwithstanding the explicit requirement in the extant statutory regulations, the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008, to prepare the financial statements in accordance with the SORP 2005, however since the SORP 2005 has been withdrawn, the Trustees have determined to interpret this responsibility as requiring them to follow current best practice and prepare the accounts according to the FRS 102 SORP 2015. In particular, charity law requires the Trustees, if they prepare accounts on an accruals basis, to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity as at the end of the financial year and of the surplus or deficit of the charity. In preparing those financial statements the Trustees are required to, - Prepare the accounts in accordance with United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice (United Kingdom Accounting Standards and applicable law). - Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently. - Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent. - Prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in business. - State whether applicable accounting standards and statements of recommended practice have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements. The law requires that the trustees must not approve the accounts unless they are satisfied that they give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the surplus or deficit of the charity for the year. The Trustees are also responsible for maintaining adequate accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and which are sufficient to show and explain the charity’s transactions and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with regulations made under the charity legislation. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. The Trustees are also responsible for the contents of the Trustees’ report, and the statutory responsibility of the Independent Examiner in relation to the Trustees’ report is limited to examining the report and ensuring that, on the face of the report, there are no material inconsistencies with the figures disclosed in the financial statements. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK 2020-21 Page 6 ## PURPOSE ORIENTED ACTIVITIES ## Purpose Oriented Activities This section summarises the main achievements and performance of the charity during the year. With the Grace of our Lord Jesus, it has been the privilege of Hermon MTC to serve the Mar Thoma diaspora community in the Midlands area for past 14 years. We thank God for his immense blessing and pray that he continues to guide us to thrive in his Ministry in the years to come. The year 2020/21 will be remembered in history for a virus called COVID 19 which bought the entire world to its knees. Yet during these unprecedented times we have seen God’s miracles being performed around us and we give our God Almighty all the glory. We are still in the hold of this global pandemic whilst we prepare this report and pray that God Almighty’s powerful hands will help us through this pandemic in the coming 12 months. During the year 2020-21, the world went through unprecedented times with COVID-19 and it was no different for our church. Even in the midst of these difficult times, the church worked towards the achievement of the aims and objectives of our Ministry. A report on these activities is summarized as below. ## THANKSGIVING SERVICE IN MEMORY OF THE MOST REV DR JOSEPH MAR THOMA METROPOLITAN This year, for the Mar Thoma Church, was particularly poignant as its leading steward in the service of our Lord was called back to His Heavenly presence. On October 18th, 2020, our beloved Metropolitan the Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma, the 21[st] Mar Thoma, was called to his eternal home at the age of 90. His passing, especially during this unprecedented time, posed many challenges to the church and its faithful. His demise was a great loss not just to the Mar Thoma church, but also to the worldwide Christian community and the community at large. His time as the Metropolitan will go down in history as a time when Mar Thoma church has grown beyond the shores of India and became a global entity. Hermon MTC held a memorial service on 25 October 2020. This blessed service was well attended, Mr Jibu Cherian looked back at the illustrious life of Thirumeni in service of Christ our Lord & the Mar Thoma Church. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK 2020-21 Page 7 PURPOSE ORIENTED ACTIVITIES ## WORSHIP SERVICES With the global pandemic taking hold of life in the past year, face-to-face holy communion services were not possible and we as a church had to adapt to circumstances and started using the digital platform to carry out our Divine Services. We had Divine services on every Sunday from 10:30am onwards and it was well attended by all members. It was a source of great fellowship, comfort, and strength to all the members in these unprecedented times. As a positive fall-out from the situation we were able to have many exemplary men and women of God from all around the globe join us virtually to share the Word with us. Our vicar, Rev Saju Chacko has worked relentlessly in co-ordinating these services and in securing these speakers. ## SPECIAL SERVICES Special services in accordance with the Mar Thoma Church calendar were observed inspite of the challenges of the pandemic, these services were organised over the virtual platform. These were the Students Dedication Sunday, Sevika Sangham Sunday, Senior Citizens Sunday, Harvest Festival, Diocesan Sunday, Sannadha Suvishesha Sangham Day, Sunday School Sunday, Youth Sunday services. These were well adapted to the circumstance and each of these was a blessed occasion. ## STUDENTS’ THANKSGIVING & DEDICATION SERVICE The Students’ Thanksgiving and Dedication service was held on Sunday, September 6[th] , 2020, before the start of the new academic year. All children starting school, entering new academic years at school & universities along with the teachers amongst our congregation including the Sunday school teachers were upheld in prayers and blessed during the service. As a part of thanksgiving service, a special offertory was collected. An amount of £910/- was raised. We thank all families and individuals for their generous contributions. As has been our practice over the past two years following the church’s undertaking to support three children in their all-round development till the age of 18, from Abhayam Children’s Home, Kottarakara, Kerala, part of the money raised was donated on this behalf. ## COMMITTEE RETREAT & DEDICATION SERVICE The 2020 - 2021 Committee took charge of the church administration in the month of September. A dedication service with a short retreat was held on 27th September 2020. Rev Bijoy Daniel Bangalore delivered the Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK Page 8 2020-21 ## PURPOSE ORIENTED ACTIVITIES message on the occasion, he reminded the post-holders of their divine calling to the roles and duties. It was a blessed experience for all our committee members. ## GREAT LENT 2021 AND PASSION WEEK SERVICES During the Lent, from the 14[th] February 2021 to 4[th] April 2021, we had daily Sandhya Namaskaram (Evening prayer meetings) on the online platform. Given the changed circumstances this year we were blessed in that we could observe all 40 Lent prayers unlike the previous years as we were able to congregate virtually. All members actively participated in these prayers. Many families, the Sevika Sangham, Youth Fellowship, and Sunday school led the Lent meditations. Special services were conducted as per Mar Thoma Church’s lectionary for Mid Lent on 10[th] March 2021, the 40[th] Lent day on 26[th] March 2021 and Palm Sunday on the 28[th] March 2021. These were blessed opportunities to dwell on our Lord’s mighty mercies to humankind. The Lent meditations and the special services were specially blessed experience as we were able to realise how blessed each of us are and how our abilities could be used for the glory of our God and to spread His Word. During the Passion week, we conducted all the services according to the lectionary; there were Sandhya Namaskaram services from Monday to Wednesday, Pessaha service on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday service and Easter service. These were all conducted virtually and were well received by all members. ## PRAYER MEETINGS Due to the global pandemic, face to face area prayer meetings were not possible, but the virtual platforms provided an outlet on which we could congregate, pray, share & dwell on the Word of God together. These fellowships were a source of divine solace in these very trying times for all people including our congregation These meetings were attended by most of the congregation and these sessions gave members an opportunity to testify God’s mighty presence in their lives. 1. Daily prayer meetings: The daily prayer meetings started almost immediately after the country went into lockdown. From April 2020 to July 2020, we had over 120 prayer meetings as part of this prayer meeting initiative. Our vicar Saju Chacko, as part of this initiative, encouraged all members of the church to take lead in these meetings, over 50 families took up the responsibility and were able to deliver very meaningful and blessed devotions. We dearly cherish these moments and would like to record our gratitude to everyone for their blessed efforts. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK Page 9 2020-21 PURPOSE ORIENTED ACTIVITIES . ## 2. Bible study: As the country came out of lockdown and our members had to return to near normal working lives the daily prayer meeting couldn’t be held with such regularity so it was decided that they would be replaced by twice weekly Bible Study and Prayer sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays These meeting were also (and are being) well received and are continuing. These meetings have dwelled on the Letters of James and Peter and the First Letter to Timothy. We would like to thank Thomas Abraham, Sajeev Daniel, Minu Sherry, Sam Mathew and Jinu Varghese who along with our vicar Rev Saju Chacko led these Bible studies. These sessions are a source spiritual nourishment to all who are able to attend them. ## 3. Chain prayer Under the leadership of the Sevika Sangam, chain prayers were held to dwell on the prayer requests received from the congregation and the wider community, these were held on Tuesday and Thursday every week. Individual members of the congregation devote their time in prayer in a relay fashion. God Almighty acknowledges to supplication of his faithful. 4. Organisational prayer meetings All organisations of the church took particular effort to have their own periodic prayer meetings too. Area prayer meetings are being planned to be revived using the digital platform in our 5 Area Prayer groups ## FAMILY RETREAT Hermon Family Retreat was conducted virtually between the 23[rd] and 25[th] of October 2020. The theme of the retreat was ‘The Incredible Family’. The Retreat was led by Rev. Blezin K Mon (Farmer’s branch MTC Dallas), Rev. Thomas Joseph (Mar Thoma Church of Oklahoma) and the concluding session was led by Dr. Dinu Shibu Mathew (Family Councillor, Mumbai). The three days were dedicated to prayer, fellowship, and worship and this was well received by all members who attended this retreat. ## HARVEST FESTIVAL OFFERING SERVICE A Special Thanksgiving and Divine service was held on 15[th ] November 2020 over the online platform. This was an occasion to look back on the wonderful mercies God showered on in the past year. The congregation marked their gratitude by contributing generously, the Harvest Offertory collection was £11975. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK Page 10 2020-21 ## PURPOSE ORIENTED ACTIVITIES ## CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS Even with the global pandemic, we were able to conduct the Christmas Carol service on 24[th] December virtually as with all other services. All the church’s organisations rose to the particular challenge of producing virtual programmes and put together really enlightening items as part of the service. Rev Binu J Varghese, the Bishop secretary for UK-Europe Zone & the Vicar of St John Mar Thoma Church was the chief guest on the occasion and delivered a meaningful message. On Christmas day we had a Divine service. ## NEW YEAR WATCH NIGHT SERVICE Watch-night service was held virtually on 31[st] December 2020, led by our vicar Rev Saju Chacko. The sermon during the service was delivered by Rev Sunil Mathew who joined us from Toronto. Many members took the opportunity to share their testimonies and to thank God Almighty for all the blessing showered on them. ## SUNDAY SCHOOL At Hermon Mar Thoma church Sunday school, we aim to help children to grow in their love of God and understanding of Christ's teachings. We are blessed with the leadership and guidance from our vicar, Rev Saju Chacko from May 2019. We follow The North America and Europe diocese Sunday school curriculum. Currently there are 45 students registered in 12 classes. Our church responded swiftly when physical meeting ceased due to the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020. There were obviously barriers to overcome, such as getting used to the class delivery and engaging children (particularly younger children) via virtual media. Our God Almighty enabled both teachers and children to rise to the challenging circumstances. Initially, although it has been slightly daunting to teach in this way, but the positive response from the children, immense support from parents and guidance from our vicar, the online classes quickly became widespread. Classes were held between Saturdays and Sundays every week based on the availability of parents. Teachers continually shared and reflected upon how best to meet the needs of children in teacher’s meetings. With the systematic planning and an authentic approach by the ‘teachers-parents-children’ team, it is greatly encouraging to see the positive trajectory of children’s faith nourishment during this pandemic, whether the setting is a physical “Sunday School”, home environment or online context. On the 5th of July 2020, 37 out of 40 students took the annual UK & Europe zonal exams via virtual platform. We are proud of all children for their great effort and thank parents for the immense support in the coordination of the exams and preparing the children for the exams. The children from Hermon MTC actively took part in the 2020 UK & Europe Zonal online VBS which was held in October 2020. An effective and contextual message Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK 2020-21 Page 11 ## PURPOSE ORIENTED ACTIVITIES was conveyed through a virtual presentation by the Hermon Sunday school children during the 2020 Zonal World Sunday School Day celebration on the 1st of November 2020. The Sunday school children presented a virtual nativity for the parish virtual Christmas celebration. It is greatly encouraging to see how God has helped our church and the Sunday school team to continue and progress online to develop children’s faith in such a short timeframe. ## CHOIR This year has been quite extraordinary for the Choir due to pandemic – which gave us the chance to move our activities online that contributed to the achievement of the aims and objectives of our Ministry. Our choir is well established and plays an integral part in the Church services and prayers. At present we have 37 members in our choir and even during this difficult situation, we were able to lead the online worship singing sessions and with the leadership and guidance of the choir leaders, presented 5 virtual choirs - a first in this Choir’s history. All the members worked hard as a team and without their combined effort and dedication, this would not have been possible. This showed that no matter where we are or what situation we are in, where there is a will, there is a way. The administration of choir is carried out as per DSMC guidelines and the leadership of Rev. Saju Chacko have been instrumental in sailing this ship through the troubled waters of the pandemic. The committee has met various times in the year and has been actively involved towards the smooth functioning of our activities. We are really looking forward to live worship and singing to sing praises to God almighty and thank Him for giving us all the talents that can be used for His glory. We hope and pray that God will bless us and our church abundantly this next year ## SEVIKA SANGHAM The Sevika Sangham has continued to fulfil its role of helping in all spheres of our church life and upholding the various needs of the parish and all its individuals by means of our prayers and physical assistance where needed and possible. In the past year as most of our activities has been online, Sevika Sangham members also got involved actively in all services of the church and especially dedicating their time in prayer fellowships and willingly participating in it. When the daily evening prayer meetings started last year following lockdown, Sevika Sangham members along with their families got actively involved in both leading and participating in the daily prayers. Those prayers and meditations were both a blessing and source of strength to all our members and we thank God for the opportunities received. Following discussions, we also initiated a monthly Sevika Sangham meeting which was planned to be held on 2nd Saturday of every month Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK Page 12 2020-21 ## PURPOSE ORIENTED ACTIVITIES Sevika Sangham members has been participating in Zonal Sevika Sangham chain prayer held every second Friday of the month. Members also participated in online Zonal Sevika Sangham Conference held on 27[th] February 2021. When we were faced with all the difficulties and sufferings especially related to the pandemic, Sevika Sangham members started a chain prayer on every Tuesday and Thursday (from September 2020) upholding all prayer requests and remembering all sick and needy and has been continuing with it till date. All the members have been participating sincerely and been willing to dedicate their time for this amid their daily busy schedules. It has been of immense strength and comfort for all those involved. We held our Sevika Sangham Sunday celebration on 13th September 2020, in which worship service was assisted by Sevika Sangham members and we had a blessed message delivered by Dr Christy John Jacob, Kochamma from Liverpool. On January 29[th] , 2021, the Church’s nightly prayer was led by Sevika Sangham members. It had a good participation from all parish members. It was an opportunity to pray, praise and thank God for all the blessings and share testimonies and proved to be a blessed time. We had our daily lent prayers from February 14th till April 3rd, 2021, and again Sevika Sangham members were instrumental in both leading and participating in it. It was again an opportunity for our continued fellowship and blessing for many. We would like to thank all members for their continued support and pray that God Almighty will continue to guide and strengthen us in all our endeavours for the growth of our church and help us to be a blessing to many. ## COUPLE FELLOWSHIP Members from couple fellowship have actively taken part in the divine services held on Sundays over the past year by leading the: singing sessions, bible readings, assisting with the worship order, sermons and intercessory prayers. Throughout lockdown, many of our couple fellowship members have led the daily meetings which included singing, bible reading, sermons and intercessory prayers. Couple fellowship family have come together via the WebEx platform to intercede and praise together. These meetings were presided by our vicar Rev. Saju Chacko. Couple fellowship members also supported the lent worship as well as leading singing sessions, bible reading, intercessory prayers and sermons. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK Page 13 2020-21 ## PURPOSE ORIENTED ACTIVITIES ## PARISH RETREAT Couple fellowship hosted Parish Retreat 2021 which was held from 1st Jan 2021 -3rd Jan 2021 via the WebEx platform. Sessions were led by our guest speaker, Rev. Dr. Joe Joseph Kuruvilla who is the director of TMAM Orientation and Research Centre, Kottayam. The theme for the retreat was: Hopeful Living Amidst Hopelessness. It was a blessed event. ## EDAVAKA MISSION The Edavaka mission’s role is to nurture the spiritual growth of the parish and during this difficult year, by the Grace of God Almighty and under the able and proactive leadership of our vicar Rev Saju Chacko, the organisation continued to deliver on this task as best as possible. We observed our Sannadha Suvishesha Sangha Dinam on 4[th] October 2020and worship service was assisted by our Edavaka Mission members. Rev Allan T Samuel (missionary from Maharashtra mission). As part of Edavaka Mission program we conducted special prayer meetings on 2[nd] and 3[rd] October. The highlight of this year’s activities was the Annual Convention. ## ANNUAL CONVENTION Hermon Mar Thoma church annual convention was held on 5[th ] ,6[th] , and 7[th] March 2021 on the Online platform. Edavaka mission was able to support the event along with our parish. This convention was indeed a blessing and was thoroughly refreshing to our souls. The theme was “Moving with Christ in the new normal”, Rev Dr Joseph Daniel from Mar Thoma Seminary Kottayam dwelt on the subject very intensely challenging us to consider how we continue to follow the Word of God in these changing and difficult times. ## VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL The children from Hermon MTC actively took part in the 2020 UK & Europe Zonal online VBS which was held in October 2020. The enthusiasm, energy and the interactive approach by the VBS director, Rev Noble Abraham (Pune), engaged the long-distance audience of Sunday school children of all age-groups and teachers throughout the three days of the VBS. The blessed devotions, singing session and classes were based on the extremely relevant theme ‘Focus 2020’. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK 2020-21 Page 14 ## PURPOSE ORIENTED ACTIVITIES ## YOUTH FELLOWSHIP The Youth Fellowship of the church has 52 members and have meetings once a month, on every 3[rd] Saturday of the month. All youth meetings were held virtually via WebEx. During these meetings there was bible study, intercessory prayer and quizzes, all youths attended, and it was a blessed occasion for all. On the 18th of October, a special worship service was held via WebEx. Members of the youth led the service, taking part in assisting the divine service as well as bible reading, intercessory prayer and singing. Rev. Manu Varghese from Dharmajyoti Vidyapeeth Seminary, Faridabad attended the service as the Chief Guest. The 2020 Christmas Carol service took place via WebEx, the youth contributed a pre-recorded ‘Zoom meeting skit’, delivering a clear message and apt for times. From the 17th of February to the 4th of April, the season of Lent, a daily prayer meeting was held virtually via WebEx. Many of our youths attended these meetings individually or along with their family. On many occasions youths led the meeting with meditation and prayer. The year 2020 was an unprecedented year for everyone, but youths were one of the age groups that arguably had the most change in their lives. The Youth Fellowship team through this year on the online platform tried to help the youth of Hermon Marthoma Church to not only grow as people, but to also grow in Christ, and to solidify their faith. ## PARTICIPATION IN UK-EUROPE ZONAL ACTIVITIES Hermon Mar Thoma Church is extremely proud to be an active part of the functioning of the UK-Europe Zone of the Diocese of North America & Europe both in it spiritual mission and administrative activities. The church has made substantial contribution to the various Zonal programmes such as the weekly online Intercessory prayer meetings, Zonal Convention, Zonal Sunday, and the Zonal Christmas Carol. Our congregation actively participated in these activities. It is a privilege to have our members, Mr Thomas Abraham (Zonal Treasurer) and Mr Sherry Matthews (Chief Editor for Echo: Quarterly Zonal Publication) taking key administrative positions within Zone. We wish them all the very best in carrying out the responsibilities of these very important roles within the administration of the Zone We as a parish will continue to contribute to the activities and development of the Zone in its mission to spread and uphold the message and light of our Saviour Jesus Christ by nurturing and supporting it member parishes and their congregations. Hermon Mar Thoma Church, Midlands, UK 2020-21 Page 15 PURPOSE ORIENTED ACTIVITIES ## CHARITY DONATIONS As a charitable organisation it is our responsibility to identify people in our community who are in need and assist them where possible. The Church has participated in various charitable activities. Some of the activities are as follows 1. CRISIS Relief Fund: Taking into account the very difficult circumstances that families and individuals were finding themselves in due to the pandemic, the church agreed to an initiative to raise funds to provide assistance to such people in crisis in our communities. We were successful in raising £6640 and these funds were distributed to 10 people who were in real dire need. We thank God Almighty for using us to extend a helping hand in a brother/sister’s time of need. 2. Overseas Medical Aid: In response to a very urgent appeal from one of our churches in Kerala for assistance on behalf of a family to manage their medical expenses, we as a church were able to collect £1965 and help in a small way. ## CHURCH DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE The General Body on 21[st] July 2019 appointed the (current) Church Development Committee for the purpose of buying a Church and Parsonage. This committee have been working tirelessly to achieve this objective. During this financial year, the committee found 2 churches that would have been suitable and made recommendations to the General Body following which offers were made for them, but unfortunately both were not successful. Since August 2020, as per the General Body decision in July 2019, the committee started simultaneously looking for a property to be the Vicarage and the team found 83, Cheswood Drive, Sutton Coldfield suitable. The recommendation was brought to the General Body on the 28[th] February 2021 and the purchase was approved. Completion of the purchase was pencilled for the 30[th] April 2021. This will be a huge milestone in the parish’s growth through the last 18 years, 14 of which as a full-fledged parish of the Mar Thoma Church in the Midlands. The Church Development Committee continues its search for a suitable place of worship for our growing parish. As this is a very acute need of our church, the committee calls for continued prayers and assistance in the search and fruition of this ambition by way of your expertise and financial support. Regular Divine Services and Prayer meetings serve as foundation for growth and upliftment of the beneficiaries constantly throughout the year. Presence of locally resident vicar proved helpful in promoting regional bible study classes and /or cottage fellowship. Various sub-organisations also played its role of encouraging and sustaining the unity of community at all age groups. As the flow of income is not uniform, reserves need to be set aside to meet expenses that are irregular in pattern. The Executive Committee has determined that the approximate level of free reserves should be equivalent to six months expenditure, approximately £40,000. Unrestricted fund in excess of £40,000 at the year-end would be transferred to the Designated funds. The procedures of the election process were followed as per the Constitution of the Mar Thoma Church mentioned in Clause no 231 to 251. The notification regarding the election process was announced during the service on the 14[th] February and on the 21[st] February and the notification of the election was uploaded on the Parish website and sent via email to the parish members. Rev Saju Chacko has been extremely dynamic and his ability to reach out to existing and new members has helped the church grow in the community. Although the last 12 months have been tough with the pandemic situation, under the leadership of Rev Saju Chacko, the regular prayer meetings and bible studies have only made us stronger by. Weekly prayer meetings were also established on the online platform extending service to community around us locally and internationally. The Trustees have had regard to the charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit in managing the activities of the charity.
