SO WHAT'S THE BUS? by Suzy Andrews
Suzy is oné of tho Kingsbridgo Youth For Christ Trustees- she is also out on Kingsbridge Quay every week with the bus
to support local young people with a safe place to hang out-our custornised van acts as a mobileyouth club." feattjring a
games console. rv. Sound System. Lights and drink facilities.
The opposite of the ubiquitous white Yan that speeds around the
lanes the Kingsbridge Youth for Christ bus Is black and
stationary Il Is a fixture on the Quay on Wednesday and Friday
Ilernoons. come rain or shine At around 3 30pm a stream of
KCC pupils and students amble along. many taking a detour
towards the bus where hol chocolate is a staple. sweets an
occasional treat. but I think nothing béats a dough ball judging
by the recent reaction- think pigeons and Trafalgar Squarel
Bul it's not the hol drinks orthe snacks (although they help)
which draws the kids lo the Bus- il's the reliability and
friendliness of Jonny and Becky as they welcome whoever
happens lo comealong The youngsters are known by name,
many will head straight Insideto thecompuler games. others will
mill around outside. chatting with the KYFC team orwilh one
another The allraction. Il seems to me. are Ihefamili3r laces. the
acceptance, the encouragement. the affirmation that Jonnyand
Becky naturally g Ive them.
I've been struck byjusl how polilelhe kids are- I don't know
what I was expecting, bul they are delightful. admittedlysome
more monosyllabic than others, but there is a trusted relationship
betwéen the kids and Becky and Jonny which has built up over
the months and years.
One of the most touching things I've wilnossed this year is tho
way God can be seen to be orcheslraling the whole initia-
live lor examplo, a youngster that Jonny hadn't séen forages suddenly pitches up
and has a long conversation with Jonny, and when he wanders oll, Jonny checks his
mobileto see that about the same time the boy arrived. a teacher from the school had
sent a messageexpressing concern about him and lo look out for him The boy has a
remarkably unstable family background. bul Jonny Is a consislenl adult In his life who
genuinely caros lor him. Isn't Il a privilege to beableto be Jesus. ambassador in this
kingdom?
