## **Telugu Association of London Charity Registration Number: 1137074 Report of the Trustees for the Year Ended 31 March 2022**

## _APPOINTMENT METHOD, INDUCTION AND TRAINING OF TRUSTEES_

Trustees are appointed by Members in a General Meeting. The Chair of the Trustees is responsible for the induction of any new committee member; this involves awareness of responsibilities, of the governing document, of administrative procedures and of the history and activities of the Association. A new member should receive copies of the previous year’s annual report and accounts, contact details of other Trustees, as well as a copy of the Charity Commission leaflet “The Essential Trustee: What you need to know”.

## _ORGANISATION STRUCTURE OF TAL AND DECISION MAKING PROCESS_

Although the Trustees have ultimate responsibility for the running of the Association they receive advice from the Honorary Governors who are elders of the community. In turn the Trustees appoint Secretaries to take responsibility for organising one of the range of the wide range of activities as well as for financial and administrative support. Secretaries are expected to regularly report back to the Trustees.

## _RISKS AND INTERNAL CONTROL_

The Trustees have overall responsibility for ensuring that TAL has appropriate systems of control, both financial and operational. These systems should be designed to provide reasonable, but not absolute, assurance against material misstatement or loss. The new Trustees have recognised that there were major financial and operational risks facing TAL in terms of financial control and governance. They are implementing an action plan to ensure that, as far as is reasonable, controls are in place to protect TAL, its Members, the general public and other stakeholders.

## **Objectives and activities**

The Telugu Association of London promotes mainly for the benefit of the public particularly and not exclusively the Telugu Community in the United Kingdom, in particular

- a) The advancement of education including education in Telugu history, culture and customs;

- b) The relief of poverty;

- c) The provision of facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation or other leisure time occupation of individuals, who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disability, financial hardship or social circumstances with the object of improving their conditions of life;

- d) The promotion of racial harmony for the public benefit by: (for example)

   - I. Promoting knowledge and mutual understanding between different racial groups;

   - II. Advancing education and raising awareness about different racial groups to promote good relations between persons of different social groups;

   - III. Working towards the elimination of discrimination on the grounds of race;

4

_HOW HAS TAL TRIED TO FURTHER THESE AIMS?_

During the year TAL has organised a series of virtual cultural events even though COVID 19 affected major disruption and has provided educational services through the TAL Cultural Centre. Although primarily accessed by members of the Telugu community we welcome individuals from all backgrounds.

The Trustees consider that the activities undertaken, offered at no or minimal cost, provide benefit to the community as a whole and confirm that in exercising their powers and duties, they have complied with their duty to have due regard to the guidance on public benefit published by the Charity Commission and have complied with their duties under Section 17 of the Charities Act 2011.

## **Financial review**

## _FINANCIAL RESULTS FOR THE YEAR_

During the year TAL’s total receipts of £50,657 compared to previous year of £23,618 due to organising various activities and events after recovery from COVID 19 however the charity made a surplus of £1,968 compared to surplus of £10,664 in the previous year due to spending on events and activities. Trustees would expect to make an occasional deficit as long as these are matched over time by compensating surpluses. Cash holdings remain healthy with £44,274 in the bank at year end.

Full details of the results for the year are as shown in the Accounts.

## _RESERVES POLICY_

The aim of the Trustees is to ensure that TAL holds adequate reserves to allow it to continue its charitable objectives. Since there are neither paid staff, nor premises and since all activities should be self-funding the Trustees believe that a reserve of £20,000 should be sufficient. However, as at 31 March 2022 reserves stood at £44,274. As there are no designated reserves the excess reserve funds will be deployed in the future in support of activities in line with TAL’s objects.

## **Plans for Future Periods**

Trustees are confident the situation will improve in the coming years and the community is growing in UK and would aiming creating an academy for sports and making itself selfsustainable in future times.

Continuing with the existing range of events and activities.

6

Trustees are also aware that they need to improve the Association’s governance and financial systems including extending the online payment systems to reduce cash transactions.

## **Independent Examiner's report to the Trustees of Telugu Association of London**

I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2022, which are set out on pages 9 to 11.

**Respective** The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. **responsibilities of** The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year **trustees and examiner** under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to:

- examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act,

- to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the charities Act, and

- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

**Basis of independent** My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions **examiner’s statement** given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given in the accounts.

**Independent examiner's** In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention **statement** other than that disclosed above

which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the requirements to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act have not been met; or

to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
