The present comrnunity-ba5ed teaching orchestra erew out of a group of parents of child MUS￿lan$ in Tower Hamlets
who expressed an Intefest in learning a clèssical stringed instnjment themselves. This led in 1983 to the creation of
Saturday morning learning progfamme with no auditions of minimurn reouirements to rnÈmber5hip. ELLS0 continues
this approath t¢d4y. It welcomes adutts who have never played an insirument before. those reiuming to playing after
a gap and those looking to exrend their musical experience or develop skills on another instrumenr.
In order to
maximi5e acce55 to its activities. ELLSO oflers conce55ionaryfees Whe￿ there is a demonstrable need and Instruments
can be hired at a modest cost.
Severèl years a80 the Board made a detision to set up an internal fund known 4$ 'RaWs Fund. lin memory of Ray
Muggeridge. a former memberl to cover the conces510n scheffle and make Small financial grants to ELLSO members
who are experiencing severe finantibl hardship. Thtse grants take the fomi tsl one￿ff fee waivers or ¥Èduttion5. An
independent priciitioner administeis the fund on a confidential basis. Responding t¢ tho cost of living crisis, the
8oard passed a re501ution to extend the Concessions polity to inrlude people who are not in ￿elpt of benefits but
are on a low income. During rhe ye4r 40 grants were rnade enabling some rnernbers ro froin. or others to continue,
who WOLtld otherw5e have been unable to aFfotd to do so. The Board tecords thanks to all those who have made
donations to this important fund

competiiive and non-hierarchical environment. It is open to all adults. ¥an8in8 from those 5taniThg from 5cr4tch to
mere èdvanced players. The lifflitations of space. the need to keep technique classe5 to a realistic siEe and to maintaSn
4 degree of balance in ensembles. means that th15 activity has been limited to around 150 plaie5.

to prepannE for the pertormance. We adapted our summer temi Saturday morning timetable to.allow time to
rehearse 'whole oithe5tra' pieces. including pieces where members of the ESO and ISE groups wÈre able to COMÈ to a

Once again we were de1￿hled to obtain the use of the teachin& rehearsal and boarding spaces in the peaceful
surroursding5 01 Uppinzhèrn School for our annual International Strin8 Summer school.
The ￿ent was attended by 93 players and was led by a team of 10 strin8 lutorlperformers. Our own n*mbers were
joined by players frcm all corner5 of ihe UK and orher5 travelling From the US. Souihern Ireland. Bel8iurn and the
Netherlonds for a week of wonderful plawni.

In the absence of a repla£ement for the outgtyng Chair. this work has been covered by a Planning Group of 4
Directors. This has the benefit of spreading the workload, but also sharin8 a deeper under5tandini pf the running of
the charity, until su¢h time as a new thèir em￿Se5.
