ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
2020 has been a tough year for everyone and especially tough for the most vulnerable in society. With the pandemic effectively ending international tourism to Kenya, the communities surrounding Mutunyi school were severely impacted as many are directly or indirectly dependant on visitors for their income.
With this backdrop the Charlie Sumption Memorial Fund (CSMF) trustees have continued the charity's invaluable work in 2020 supporting the current and past pupils of Mutunyi School.
CSMF has sponsored 21 scholars since 2007 who are at various stages in their secondary and tertiary education by paying their fees. We are currently sponsoring 11 scholars: 7 in secondary school:
-
Robinson Murithi Kaigera - Kagaa Boys (Meru)
-
Bonface Mutethia - Igembe Boys
-
Pauline Gaiciumia - Yururu Girls
-
Jackline Kathure - Maua Girls
-
Charity Karambu - Ikuu Girls
-
Fedester Baraka - Meru School
-
Isaac Muriki - Kanyakine High
5 in University/ Further Education:
-
Idris Kalicho - Civil Engineering at Machakos University
-
Evelyn Akeno - Teaching - Chuka University
-
Violenzer Karwitha - Plumbing - Meru National Polytechnic
-
Evans Kinoti - Clinical Medicine - Kenya Medical Teaching College
-
Princeppus Muthomi - Kabarak University
9 scholars have graduated from the CSMF programme either by graduating from university or by graduating from secondary school.
CSMF Computer room at Mutunyi School
The CSMF financed internet connection continues to be a great success as the CSMF sponsored IT teacher Isaac enters his seventh year at Mutunyi School. These classes are improving the computer literacy of the students providing them with skills essential in the modern world in which we live. The students are trained how to use basic Microsoft programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well as how to use the internet.

FINANCIAL REVIEW
In total the CSMF has raised £275,847 to date, £54,080 of which was raised prior to the date that the Trust was formally established on 20 February 2010.
During 2020 £28,337 was raised, £26,055 of which was from donations and £2,282 investment income. The total expenditure for the period was £7,295. This included £5,325 expended on scholarships; £1,258 for the teachers' salaries; £64 for school supplies (including internet charges) and £713 administration costs (10% charge on all donations to administer scholarships in Kenya). At 31st December 2020 the charity held £175,656 (£126,476 in investments and £49,180 at the bank).
PLANS FOR FUTURE PERIODS
The CSMF plan to continue awarding one scholarship a year to the best performing pupil graduating from Mutunyi Primary School, subject to funds, academic performance and a good character reference. We plan to build an alumni network of CSMF scholars to be mentors to the young new scholars sponsored by CSMF.
We would like to encourage CSMF scholars in the period between high school and university (3-6 months) to teach at Mutunyi School. CSMF would pay these scholars their maintenance costs during this period.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF THE CHARLIE SUMPTION MEMORIAL FUND
YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2020
I report to the trustees on my examination of the financial statements of The Charlie Sumption Memorial Fund ('the charity') for the year ended 31 December 2020.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND BASIS OF REPORT
As the trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).
I report in respect of my examination of the charity's financial statements carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S STATEMENT
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
-
accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or
-
the financial statements do not accord with those records; or
-
the financial statements do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair' view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
