TAUNTON TEAM CHAPLAINCY TRUST ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2025 ## **Introduction** This is the fifteenth annual report of the Trust and covers the year ending 31st December 2025. It complies with the public benefit reporting requirements of the Charity Commission. ## **Objectives** The Trust’s aim is " _To make the Christian faith relevant and active in the Taunton area for the benefit of the public by appointing chaplains to provide pastoral care, evangelistic witness and prayer in a variety of workplaces, shops, law courts, public areas and elsewhere._ " **Achievements and performance** – in some respects this has been a difficult year as we have seen changes propelled by external circumstances, including illness of some chaplains and significant changes in the Board of Trustees. Geoff Morton, Tobie Osmond, Beccy Fox and Michael Hayes have resigned (Geoff due to ill-health and Michael due to relocation) and Eric Tebbett, Helen Clegg and Joan Wilkinson have accepted the invitation to join the Board of Trustees. Helen Clegg resigned as Treasurer and passed the mantle to Martin Sumpter. Joan Wilkinson took on the role as convener of Care Home chaplains. We are grateful to Frances Heath-Coleman for coordinating care home chaplains. These trustee changes have been duly recorded at both Companies House and Charity Commission. There have been various encouraging developments over the past year – the Chaplaincy’s effectiveness has been reviewed following a survey of volunteers and of the places where they operate. Policy documents and general work practices have been reviewed and updated and due diligence applied in interaction between volunteers and the general public. The Lead Chaplain, Treasurer and Director of Fundraising announced their intention to retire at the end of the session and thus sparked the search for replacements. To date a new Treasurer, Martin, is working alongside the current post-holder, Helen, while Job descriptions and Person Specifications have been prepared ready for publication in the New Year. Already there have been positive inquiries from 3 people for the demanding role of Lead Chaplain. The response from those in receipt of chaplaincy services was less comprehensive than hoped and make it difficult to know what is going well and to identify areas of improvement. Finances continue to be an issue in the current difficult economic climate, but thanks to the persistent and innovative approach of our Director of Fundraising, we have seen new support from some quarters to compensate for reduced funding from others. Team Chaplains, however, continue to go wherever needed, and although TTC is a Christian organisation, its volunteers willingly help everyone regardless of background, ethnicity or culture. The demand for Chaplains continues to grow as economic uncertainty and personal hardship increase pressure on all sectors of society. We frequently encounter people suffering from stress and mental health issues due to fear of (or actual) redundancy, violence in the home and similar Page **1** of **7** problems. The Lead Chaplain works with the Diocesan Chaplaincy Adviser to draw up a strategy to recruit and train new chaplains, ensure they are equipped to help people effectively and/or signpost them to various appropriate professional agencies. We foster a heightened awareness of the importance of ‘mindfulness/well-being’. This includes physical, emotional and spiritual needs and may require a referral to confidential help-lines for stress, anxiety, depression and short-term psychological services, such as counselling, or any of a huge range of services: - Budgeting and money-management advice, including debt management, universal credit ~~.~~ - Accessing temporary and more permanent housing - Relationships, divorce and separation advice - Family crisis due to health and trauma - Child and elderly care information services (especially AGE UK) - Bereavement counselling - Legal information, guidance and court advice As at 31st December 2025 we had 24 chaplains, 8 associate chaplains (all serving as volunteers) and one paid Lead Chaplain working 4 days per week. Chaplains are drawn from 17 different church denominations: most are **not** ordained ministers. Trustees are indebted to chaplains for giving liberally of their time, expertise and energy. The Crown Court has again expressed the wish to have more support of chaplains, having observed the positive impact made and the calmer atmosphere when chaplains are present in the Magistrates’ Court. Police also wish to have more chaplains to support them in their work, as they recognise the positive influence and support Street Pastors offer officers ‘on the beat’ at weekends. (Growth depends on larger numbers of volunteers coming forward, as well as increased finance to support it.) New chaplains are actively being sought - as is funding to make these wishes a reality. However, even though numbers are slowly increasing, they are insufficient to match requests. Funding is increasingly difficult to obtain, with some current sponsors having to reduce or withdraw funding. The trustees gratefully acknowledge the positive reception that chaplains receive from proprietors, managers and staff in workplaces and community locations. Further affirmation has been given to the work of the chaplaincy by the Bishop of Bath and Wells and the recently appointed Chaplaincy Adviser who expressed a desire to extend this service into other towns in the Diocese. We feel this is a long way in the future, however laudable an aspiration. ## **Operational methods** Chaplains operate in clusters, each headed by a volunteer convenor. Chaplains and Rail Responders meet regularly to train, offer mutual encouragement and prayer, fostered by the cluster leader. Some chaplains in other areas, value sessions with other chaplains on how to share best practice, initiate conversations and interact effectively with people. This could be a format suitable for the induction of new chaplains. Volunteers provide the following services to: Page **2** of **7** - Residents and staff in 8 care homes and 2 retirement housing complexes - 7 chaplains and 4 associate chaplains in total offering chaplaincy to potentially 500 residents, for whom loneliness and isolation are common problems. Staff and relatives too appreciate chaplains giving time to listen to their concerns and personal challenges. Some care home residents appreciate spiritual support as they approach their life’s end. In the residential housing, physical frailty impedes social contact for some people who value a “listening ear” which the chaplain can provide. (Associates are not managed by us but can use TTC for support or training). - The public and rail staff at the railway station and around the Obridge viaduct (a known suicide ‘hotspot’ adjacent to the two most socially deprived estates in Taunton). The 7 chaplains here are badged as ‘Rail Responders’ and look out for people displaying anxiety or suicidal intent. They also engage with travellers and rail staff. They receive special training from Samaritans and Mind to ensure they are equipped to deal with such potentially traumatic events. - Defendants, families and staff at Taunton Magistrates Court (9 chaplains). The impact of court hearings can be life-changing for defendants and their dependents, who are often among the more deprived members of society, some with addiction problems. Successive High Sheriffs have commended our work. - ‘Courts are much calmer when you are around’, said one security officer. One grateful defendant said 'Thanks for listening. Everyone is too busy to hear what I am saying. I know I did wrong, but you helped me sort my head out!' - Chaplains work in pairs to provide reassurance for those who may find appearing in court daunting or frightening. - All chaplains have full DBS checks and are sometimes asked by anxious defendants to be present in the courtroom. We signpost people to agencies for professional help where needed. These include Age UK, MIND, Turning Point (drugs and alcohol), Nelson Trust (women facing disadvantage and addiction), Taunton Area Debt Advice and many others. - Rough sleepers and disadvantaged young adults, in partnership with Open Door and the YMCA Dulverton group. (2 chaplains). The marginalised and homeless in our community are helped to find acceptance in society and achieve their potential. - Staff in a large supermarket (1 associate chaplain) and the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (1 chaplain). Workers value talking to their chaplain about a range of personal challenges from poor mental and physical health to bereavement, lower economic resilience, rash or poor decisions etc. Some staff suffer from the accompanying adverse effects on mental health/general wellbeing, leading to greater need for emotional support. - The general public in Vivary Park (1 chaplain). Loneliness is a common issue among those whom chaplains encounter in the town’s park. At the annual Taunton Flower Show our volunteers serve each year as Show chaplains across the site as well as providing a ‘quiet place’. Page **3** of **7** - The Chaplaincy continues to spearhead a mental health awareness campaign among local churches. Chaplains have undergone Mental Health First Aid and/or Safeguarding training to equip them to recognise issues, offer assistance or signpost individuals to appropriate support and (if appropriate) to contact the emergency services. Volunteers are reminded to be conscious of their own safety. Information from statutory and voluntary agencies is shared with local churches and chaplains to raise awareness of issues and of the resources available. Our Lead Chaplain contributes to the County Council’s Public Health team’s focus on the issue of suicide. ## **Other activities** We continue to see an increasing number of people in difficulties - financial, severe marital or family problems, divorce, abuse and domestic violence, self-harm. Chaplains have supported distressed individuals, presenting with mental health issues due to anxiety, stress and isolation. Chaplains frequently signpost individuals to specialist services. - The Chaplaincy coordinates and contributes to a weekly ‘Pause for Thought’ feature on a Taunton radio station, Apple FM. A number of local church leaders also contribute to this feature, with items of topical interest. - Some chaplains volunteer in other organisations and charities not directly managed by us, many started by Christians, but who welcome volunteers of any or no faith. Others are simply organisations using their expertise to help the community. These include: - Taunton Foodbank; - Avon and Somerset Faith Communities Response to Major Incidents team. This is a team of more than 100 volunteers, coordinated by Police chaplains, who offer help during major incidents. - Open Door charity for the homeless and the YMCA (Dulverton) group which helps the homeless and disadvantaged young adults; - The local Sea and Royal Marines Cadets; - The local Air Cadets; - The local Army Cadet Force; - The Poppy of Honour Memorial Group - The Royal Society of St George (Exmoor and Taunton Branch) - The Mind Somerset charity for mental health issues. - The Royal British Legion - Avon and Somerset Constabulary - A new church unit on a large housing estate where chaplaincy is offered to building workers and to families who have recently moved onto the estate to foster community cohesion amongst residents. When a care home opens it is planned that a care chaplain will visit. Page **4** of **7** ## **Community links** The Chaplaincy has excellent relationships with the Council and enjoys good links with more than 40 local churches and many voluntary community groups. Our Lead Chaplain attends the weekly meetings of the “B1” group of church leaders. He, and other members of the team have both spoken to churches and community groups about the work of the Chaplaincy to raise awareness of our work as well as request support financially or ‘in kind’. 120 Friends provide regular prayer support via a confidential Prayer Headlines document which is sent out fortnightly. This anonymously highlights people in need who specifically ask chaplains for prayer. A prayer meeting is held weekly in person and via Zoom to pray collectively for people and situations mentioned (anonymously) in the Headlines and for the town. An increasing number of answers to prayer during the year were noted. Apple FM has a potential reach of over 100,000 to 110,000 listeners across the Taunton Deane area In addition to the significant encounters above there was also 1 radio broadcasts on BBC Somerset for which the minimum weekly reach is 66,000. Further measures to record the impact of chaplaincy are being developed. We are taking advantage training offered by Spark Somerset, an organisation which helps charities in Somerset to thrive. ## **Financial review -** Taunton Team Chaplaincy offers its services as a gift to the town. Full figures are provided in the annual accounts but in summary, the annual accounts show expenditure £ 35,970 and income £ 44,706 Grants received in 2025 comprised the Open Mental Health grant of £8,100; Reaching Communities Fund grant instalment of £ 6,471 ,the Joseph Rank Trust grant instalment of £12,500 and Taunton Town Council £2,500. The Trustees are most grateful to all these organisations for their support. Page **6** of **7** Donations were provided from churches (£ 7,399) and from individuals £5,879 (£ 7,172 with Gift Aid). Trustees are grateful to all these donors and the sacrifices involved at a time when budgets are increasingly being stretched Other income amounted to £564. Trustees are very grateful to Somerset Council for their discretionary rates discount. Most of our donations provided steady income each month or quarter (useful because TTC's expenditure is regular). Andy Hall’s tireless efforts in sourcing funding are much valued. We are extremely grateful to all our donors. Gift aid is claimed in respect of private donors who are taxpayers and who give consent. We also very much appreciate the contributions made through gifts in kind and churches providing meeting space and other facilities free of charge. We are conscious of the need to keep expenditure to an absolute minimum and make every endeavour to do so. ## **Administrative information** Taunton Team Chaplaincy Ltd is a company limited by guarantee (company number 07108916) and a charity which is registered with the Charity Commission (number 1136868).
