Opening Report Alistair Sanders

As a church we have a vision and a mission. As a charity we have a purpose that must be for the public benefit, and activities which we undertake in order to fulfil that purpose. However, these two aspects do not have to be seen to be in conflict with each other. In January 2023 we looked again at our mission or purpose, and our call to be a ‘good news’ people to those around us. We began by challenging some wrong ideas about mission, and by encouraging us all to think seriously about the people we know, and who we can influence in positive and uplifting ways.

In churches there is frequently a slow drift towards turning inwards and focusing on having our own needs met. But every church must be outward-looking, it cannot thrive or even survive if it does not. It is the responsibility of all of us to be committed to the business of the Kingdom of God.

It is always encouraging when new people come to the church, or when Christians move to the area and look for a church. But, are we really reaching the lost? Jesus’ Kingdom agenda, his vision and mission, is the individual, personal responsibility of every one of us.

In order to be effective in mission, we have to be in step with the Holy Spirit, able to hear and heed his voice. Author Stormie Omartian has written: “God can do far more in your life than you ever dreamed possible because of the power of His Spirit working in you… When we cooperate with the Holy Spirit, things happen in our lives that will not happen if we don’t… Whatever God gives us to do is accomplished only by the power of His Holy Spirit working in us.” Three key words summarise what the Holy Spirit brings to us: peace, presence, and

power. A _conscious culture_ of the Holy Spirit is when we believe that the Spirit it with us, and we acknowledge his power at work in us and through us.

Prayer is also a vital part of our Christian life. In 2023 our approach to prayer wasn’t so much about personal, individual prayers, but more about our corporate or congregational prayer together. We learned that there are several ways of understanding prayer, and one of those was to see prayer at different levels: logistical, tactical, and strategic. Another way of describing strategic prayer is “kingdom-oriented” prayer. How can we fulfil Jesus’ instruction to “seek first the Kingdom of God”? How can we faithfully pray “your kingdom come” from the Lord’s prayer. How can we become a “prayersaturated church”?

This naturally led to teaching about the Kingdom of God. We need to understand what the Kingdom of God is, its values and its purpose, if we are to pray for it and seek it. The Kingdom of God was central to Jesus’ life and ministry, it was the prevailing theme in his teaching. Jesus has called us to be his disciples, and to be pursuing his Kingdom agenda is the individual, personal responsibility of every one of us.

In teaching about faith, we learned that faith means to believe in God and to act accordingly—that “faith without works is dead.” We saw that Jesus encountered people with different kinds of faith, or different levels of faith. He described those people as having no faith, little faith, or great faith. We are all challenged to be people of great faith.

In the autumn we started a preaching series about church membership. Many churches have church membership classes

_Page 3 of 23_

for people who have expressed an interest in becoming members. They often happen at a time and place apart from the usual church gatherings. We decided that we would bring the membership “classes” right up front and centre, and teach them on Sunday mornings. This would also be a good way of reminding us all of our responsibilities as members of King’s Baptist Church. We began by looking at what it means to belong, why and how we gather, and what is meant by ‘togethering’ and ‘one-anothering.’ Then we looked at the specific subjects of water baptism, baptism in the Holy Spirit, and communion. We also spent one morning looking at the church’s constitution, because it is a legal requirement and our governing document. All members must know, understand, apply, and uphold our constitution.

Other highlights from 2023 included the Pentecost all nations’ praise celebration. On the day of Pentecost in Acts 2 there were present people from every nation, and they were amazed and astonished because they heard the disciples telling the mighty works of God in their own native languages. While Pentecost reminds us of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, it also reminds us that in Christ there is no division, and that the church of God includes people of every nation, tribe and tongue. What better time than at Pentecost to celebrate the multinational, multiethnic, multilingual, and multicoloured church of Jesus?

In June and July we set aside time to make an in-depth study of congregational prayer, and this has formed and shaped our prayer meetings since then. Then, over the summer, the six ‘Summer Sundays’ were based on the theme of the armour of God, found in Paul’s letter to the Ephesian

Back in December 2022 we joined in with a nationwide initiative to create Warm Spaces, and in partnership with The Need Project we opened our own ‘warm space’ on Wednesday afternoons. While the warm space initiative lost momentum in the Spring of 2023, we decided to continue with what we were doing under the name of _Home from Home_ . Thanks to our regular helpers and volunteers, we have continued to provide a warm and welcoming place for people from our local community almost every Wednesday of the year. We also put on a special Christmas Eve lunch for our _Home From Home_ friends, and about half-a-dozen people came to enjoy the meal.

We also opened our doors to welcome the community with our February _Coffee and Craft_ event, October _Light Party_ , December Christingle service, nativity play and Christmas carol service, which was followed by a “family feast.”

As we look forward to all that God has for us in 2024 and beyond, I see us growing as a people of faith, fervent in prayer, open to the promptings of God’s Spirit, confidently reaching out to offer care and support to others.

Several times I have mentioned these words by writer Edward Grinnen: “…tomorrow is always uncertain. The future is not ours to know.” But, as Corrie ten Boom said, “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”

May we all know the comforting presence and the life-changing power of God with us all, throughout 2024, and always.

## Trustee’s Personal Report (1)

Angela Clark

When I was appointed as an elder, by the membership, in April 2022, I believed that there were already areas of growth that God wanted to develop further in the life of KBC. These areas fitted with the calling on my life: To minister prophetically and pastorally. This is what brings me the deepest joy. Arising from this calling, my vision for 2023 was four – fold:

That KBC would continue to be a safe place for all – for those of all ages who attend KBC; that whether we attend a social or outreach event, attend a church service, are involved in ministry or service, or are reaching out for pastoral input of any kind, that we can feel confident that we are safe and will not suffer abuse in any form.

To continue an opportunity for ‘Encounter Worship’, where we could gather for an extended time of worship, in order to meet with God on a deeper level and soak in His presence.

‘Draw near to God and He will draw near to you (James 4:8 ESV)

To encourage the congregation in their development and expression of prophetic gifts in a safe environment. Sessions have been programmed every few months where we have learned more and also given space to prophesying in practice.

‘Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy’ (1 Corinthians 14:1 NIV)

As Theo and I move house in 2024, it is my prayer that there will be those who will be called and equipped to carry forward this vision.

‘Do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor, and let none of you devise evil against another in your heart.’ (Zechariah 7:10 ESV)

That all who attend KBC would continue to develop relationships where they feel loved and cared for and feel able to reach out for help whenever they need – whether practical, emotional or spiritual. Where we can come alongside one another as we ask for, and receive, the healing available to us as members of the Body of Christ, and the equipping of the Holy Spirit to fulfil the calling on each of our lives. If we do not have the expertise or capacity within our current structure, we will refer to an appropriate source.

‘Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God.’ (1 John 4:7 NIV)

‘He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners ..’ (Isaiah 61:1 NIV)

## Trustee’s Personal Report (2)

Ian Tyler

Whenever it comes to writing the annual reports, I always reflect on what was written in previous years – I have started writing this report many times and each one started with a different opening - it felt like I have almost written the outline for several preaches but none of them adequately reflected on what I wanted to say!

I have recently been spending a significant amount of time in thought and prayer about many things – both personal and church life – past, present and future. I have been considering my outlook and vision, my wants and desires but most importantly, what does God want me to be doing and what does He want for me in KBC?

As I was reflecting on our church fellowship and as my role as an Elder, I was reminded of the following passages from the bible.

For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: (Romans 12:4–21 ESV)

So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. (1 Peter 5: 1–3 ESV)

It seems that as we get older, everything arounds us revolves around our later years – daytime TV seems to be full of adverts

for ointments to supplement our diets, over 50’s insurances, gadgets to support bits of your body that don’t work as well as they used to!

However, whatever the future holds for each and every one of us, it is all in God’s hands, and it is all part of His plans and purposes.

Just like Christmas time when people reflect on the year gone by and looking at considering New Year’s resolutions – it is all about what comes next. I am praying that I will clearly hear His will for me personally and it is not just from my head and heart. I am also praying that we can all be blessed with discernment and hear from God personally and corporately as a church.

This last year has been another year of change and has been challenging for many of us – whether personal circumstances in terms of things such as health, family matters, change of jobs, relationships – everything we call “life”. Church life has been a reflection of much the same. We have seen people sadly leave the fellowship, but we have also been blessed by new people coming into fellowship and into membership. As a church, King’s Baptist still seeks to serve.

I give thanks and praise for the dedicated people who selflessly give of their time and talents. Those who faithfully serve, in God’s name, whether at our own regular meetings or events that we put on for the community.

We will see a change in our Eldership as we sadly say goodbye to Angie and Theo in 2024. We wish them well in their new home and their new church – their gain is our loss as the saying goes, but we have the legacy of all the work and service that they have both given to KBC over the

_Page 6 of 23_

many years which we need to continue, but more importantly, develop and grow. Just because they have left us and are a “hard act to follow”, we should not stand still, we should still seek what God’s vision is for ourselves and the church – we can all be a Theo & Angie in our church, we all have a lot to offer and to give.

depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. (Philippians 1: vs 9–11 NIV)

Having now served as an Elder for 10 years (2x 3-year terms plus one extended 4-year term due to Covid), I can appreciate why Baptist Ministers need to take a sabbatical every 7 years!

We will need to once more, work together as the community of Christians during Alistair’s sabbatical in 2024 (and to use a metaphor from Pat) as we sail HMS KBC through either the stormy or still waters whilst he is away.

I pray that his sabbatical will be a time for Alistair to be blessed and receive the renewing and refreshing anointing of the Holy Spirit and that he will return fully refreshed and energised. I pray that he experiences an even deeper hunger than the one he already has, to lead KBC into our next season of growth, expansion, discovery and deeper relationship with God as we serve our church and community. Please continue to pray for Alistair, Kathrin, the family and all the Elders and the Deacons during this time.

I am deeply thankful for all the people in the fellowship that unconditionally offer their love, support, friendship and prayers to Vicky and myself, to the Elders and Deacons as we try to discern God’s will in how to honour not only God, but also honour the people of His Church and this community. Your continued prayers are truly valuable and appreciated.

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and

## Trustee’s Personal Report (3)

Jane Sprittles

At Encounter Worship, on 27[th] November 2022, I went forward for prayer and ministry. A prophecy was given:

_‘There is a season for everything and for some of you the season you are in is ending. Do not be sad for a new season begins…_

_…I am in the new birth, just go with it and welcome what I am doing in you._

_My name will be glorified’._

During the January 2023 Week of Prayer, I was approached by two of the Elders and asked to consider becoming KBC’s Treasurer. As I prayerfully considered this, God reminded me of the prophecy, and I felt Him say that it was all part of my new season. I was voted in as Trustee and Treasurer on 12[th] February 2023.

God showed me that it wasn’t about my strengths and what I could do. It was all about my weakness, needing to rely on Him and letting Him work through me.

Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:8 – 10 NIV)

As I look forward to 2024, my prayer is that God will unite the leadership with a clear sense of where He wants to lead KBC. That together, as His Church, we will all grow and develop in Him, living as 24/7 Christians and drawing others to glorious salvation at the cross of Christ our Saviour.

When the announcement was made that nominations were open for Elders and Deacons, I started asking God if there was anyone He wanted me to approach. I was completely shocked when I was again approached by two of the Elders and asked if I was willing to stand for eldership. My initial reaction was ‘are you having a laugh?’ I didn’t think I had any of the qualities God would be looking for.

God and I spent the next couple of weeks wrestling with what my decision should be. It was a testing time. Every time I thought I knew what I should do, the devil threw an obstacle in my path and tried to get me to change course. Ironically, it was these challenges that confirmed to me that God did want me to say yes!!

## Membership Report

Alison Down

At the beginning of the year three couples transferred their membership. Kevin & Tricia settled in well at Ledbury Baptist Church, Kevin & Gill are now part of Stratford-upon- Avon Baptist Church and Nicky & Neil moved to Biggleswade Baptist Church. During the year there were also transfers of membership from Jonny who attends St Neots Evangelical Church with his wife Alex and Emma & Joel who are now members of Grace Community Church in Morval. Fran and Dave have been accepted into membership at King’s Community Church, Letchworth. We wish them all well and pray they will all be a blessing in their new churches.

Sadly, Lorna Grant went to be with the Lord in May.

Alistair Sanders preached a sermon series on membership from September which formed the basis of classes for those waiting to come into membership, as well as a refresher on what it means to be a member for us all.

We ended the year with 52 members with at least five more expected to be welcomed into membership in the New Year. If you are not currently a church member but are interested in taking this next step of formal commitment to a local church, please talk to Alistair or one of the Elders.

## Health and Safety

Ian Tyler

The safety and wellbeing of anyone using the church building continues to be the responsibility of everyone who enters the building but ultimately remains the overall responsibility and comes under the “watchful eyes” of the Trustees. They have the overall duty of care both morally and legally for anyone using our facilities but everyone who uses the building should remember that they also have their part to play in ensuring everyone’s safety during services and any events that are being run.

This year has seen further consolidation and improvements in the guidelines, policies, and procedures that have previously been put into place and we are producing new and improving existing policies that we hope are simpler and easier to follow in order to keep our H&S standards as high as they can be.

As last year, Covid is still around and we have seen in the past few months, several of our fellowship suffering with the infection. We remain committed in following the existing procedures to ensure the hygiene regimes are being maintained to minimise cross infection in our building. Again we can all play our part in ensuring we keep infection away from each other (especially those in our fellowship who are vulnerable and susceptible) – do not come to church if you are feeling unwell / suspect you may have Covid (what may seem like a minor cold to us could be devastating to someone else), ensure you use hand sanitiser regularly when in the building, keep surfaces cleaned down, windows unlocked and ready to be opened etc.

There have been no “major” issues to report this year – just the occasional

_Page 9 of 23_

scrape, cut or bruise and this is testimony that we are working well to highlight and minimise the potential risks and possibility for accidents. The need for the completion and review of a Risk Assessment for every event that is run in church (being prepared in plenty of time prior to the event to enable it to be fully reviewed by the Trustees) is obviously being fruitful. However, we should not be complacent and be always vigilant. If there are doubts or concerns, please contact one of the Trustees for support and/or investigation.

## Safeguarding

Angela Clark

Our _Designated Person for Safeguarding_ (DPS) is Dawn; and our _Trustee for Safeguarding_ is Angela Clark

Five members attended the BU Safeguarding Training on 29 April, two attended Level 2 and three attended Level 3. All our current Trustees have now completed Level 3, which is the BU recommended level of expertise. Helen Backhouse has also completed Level 3.

We have had some Safeguarding concerns raised and as a church we have taken appropriate action.

On one occasion Lisa Kerry, Regional Minister of the Central Baptist Association helped us with the way forward and a statement from her was read at the Church Members’ meeting in July. The situation requires no further action going forward to 2024.

It is the responsibility of everybody to watch out for one another to keep everybody safe. Please continue to be vigilant and speak to our current DPS or Safeguarding Trustee if you have concerns.

Property and Fabric Report

Matt

We have carried out lots of basic upkeep and maintenance in the church building and the manse.

The church has had lots of small jobs done including reconditioning the outdoor poster cupboard, cutting the car park hedge right down, weeding, general cleaning and clearing, new windows and fire door. The major job of the minor hall tv cupboard and tv setup was also completed.

The manse has had some new fence panels and other necessary work was done.

## Pastoral Report

Angela Clark

Birthdays

Alison celebrated her 70th Birthday, Michael B celebrated his 40th birthday and Lorna her 60th.

Funerals

Vera Perrin’s funeral was at KBC in May. Sadly, Lorna Grant also went to be with the Lord in May.

Her funeral service was held at KBC. Thank you to everybody who helped to facilitate these events.

Weddings

In the Summer, Ian & Vicky celebrated the wedding of James to Chloe and Jane & Declan celebrated the wedding of Kaitlan to Jack.

In the Autumn, Doug & Ceri celebrated the wedding of their grandson Daniel to Lily.

Births

Joel & Emma became parents to baby Eve, and Adrian and Jacqueline became grandparents. Theo & Angie became grandparents to their 7th grandchild, baby Owen.

General

Our Pastoral Care document was updated in January, July and September 2023. This document identifies members of the team who intentionally ‘look out’ for those who attend our services. Some previous members of the team have moved away, so we are asking for members to prayerfully consider whether this is a ministry that you could be involved in. Please speak to an Elder if this is the case.

In response to the Mental Health training day, Theo produced a guidance document, ‘Out of Sight’. Members of the Pastoral Team also contributed, and the document was circulated. This guidance document

will help us as we consider how we respond to Mental Health Issues going forward. We will also be looking at addressing the vision of KBC for Pastoral Care, and also what our training needs are, as we want to be equipped as a church.

Communion has been taken to housebound members or those in residential care. Members of the team have also visited members who are sick or in hospital and offered communion or healing prayer and anointing with oil. If you are aware of anyone who would appreciate this, please let one of the leadership team know.

Pastoral needs are available on the KBC WhatsApp Prayer Chain. Your prayers and support for those asking for prayer are appreciated. There have been many answers to prayer this year, for which we give thanks. If you would like to be added to the WhatsApp prayer chain, please let an elder know. A volunteer is also required who could let the non-technical people know of needs from the Prayer Chain. Please pray for those who are currently waiting for or undergoing treatments, or, recovering from or due to have operations soon.

## Prophetic Development

These sessions are to encourage the congregation in their development and expression of prophetic gifts in a safe environment. Sessions have been programmed every few months where we have learned more and also given space to prophesying in practice.

‘Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy’. (1 Corinthians 14:1 NIV)

_Page 12 of 23_

## Worship

Helen W

The KBC Worship team has gone from strength to strength during 2023, with several new members on guitar, drums, flute, and PA/Words. We had two New Songs Practices in May and November which were great fun and opportunities to get to know one another better. We are always happy to welcome new singers, musicians and technical people to join the team, with training available on the PA/Words PC for anyone who would like it.

## Encounter Worship

Angela Clark

During Encounter Worship evenings we gathered for an extended worship time in order to meet with God on a deeper level and soak in His presence. In this environment, ‘space’ was facilitated for creative expressions of worship. Basic craft materials were provided and those who wished to express their worship through artistic expression were welcomed. Prophetic contributions were welcomed, and prayer and ministry was available. Each gathering was ‘different’, but these were valuable times when we met with God.

‘Draw near to God and He will draw near to you (James 4:8 ESV)

_Page 13 of 23_

Prayer Margaret Stanley

In the many years that I’ve been a Christian, I have always known that prayer is extremely important in the life of the believer, both on a personal level and in the life of the church.

Without prayer being the main focus in our lives, our relationship with God does not grow. I have a passion for prayer in the church and it is through our example of praying together that others will ‘catch the fire’ of what God wants to do with, and through, us.

At one of the Ladies Breakfast events, we looked at how it was through the persistent prayers of the women, at that time, that great results followed. The ‘ladies’ have been encouraged to develop ‘prayer partnerships’ and keep a prayer journal. There have already been several different prayer groups formed and these are encouraged. We have also had sermons on prayer, a Prayer School (run by our Pastor) and two weeks of prayer.

The weeks of prayer were held in January and September. We looked at various themes, meeting every morning, and evening, to have a time of worship and prayer.

The themes included: Praise, Adoration and Forgiveness, Having the Right Mindset, Being Right with One Another, Seeking Spiritual Gifts, The Prophetic, Righteousness & Persistence, The Scriptures, Life by the Spirit and Thanksgiving and Praise.

2024 looks to be a challenging one for the church, with various changes taking place but we need to remember that the importance of prayer never changes.

We continue to meet on a Wednesday morning and Sunday evening, looking to seek God first, to deepen our relationship with Him and go forward together, in His name.

Jesus at the center of it all From beginning to the end It's always been, it's always been you Jesus Jesus.

Nothing else matters Nothing in this world will do Jesus, You're the center Everything revolves around You Jesus, You, at the center of it all.

Jesus be the center of my life From beginning to the end It's always been, it's always been You, Jesus Jesus.

From my heart to the heavens Jesus be the center It's all about You Yes, it's all about You

Jesus be the center of your church Every knee will bow Every tongue shall confess You Jesus, Jesus

From my heart to the heavens Jesus be the center It's all about You Yes, it's all about You Jesus (Adam Ranney et al.)

We had various ‘prayer stations’ around the church sanctuary, and the hall, so that people could take time on their own, if they so wished, to pray into certain areas of church life.

_Page 14 of 23_

## Youth

Matt

At the beginning of the year we carried on with the Alpha Youth series. The youth really enjoyed this as it went back over the basics of our faith. After we finished that, the youth wanted a deeper study to really focus on, so we started a study all about the different types of prayer. We have had a few members of youth come and go, but we get between 6 & 12 consistently on a Sunday morning.

## King's Kids

Helen B

Every Sunday we hold ‘King’s Kids’ sessions, for children of school age who attend Kings Baptist Church, during the morning service, whilst the adults listen to the sermon.

We have a faithful team of people who help out and are always looking for more volunteers. Kathrin, Tracey, Jane O or myself lead the sessions with someone else in the room assisting – either Ceri, Laura, Kathrin, Margaret S or Pam (Margaret and Pam are valuable members who have joined the team recently). We are very thankful to God for the way that they use their skills and talents in King’s Kids and demonstrate their love for the children. The numbers vary each week, and we can never tell how many children are going to turn up – it can be anything from a few children up to about 15 in the group which is all-age. As you can imagine this comes with its challenges trying to meet the needs of everyone, but we do our best.

relate to it well. We are all still learning how to use it but feel that it will help us to teach our children to learn about God in a way that suits them. This term we have been looking at miracles in Luke and will continue to learn about prayer, worry, forgiveness and loving one another, through the book of Luke, until Easter.

We have been particularly encouraged lately to see how the children have become more comfortable in sharing things that have happened in their lives with the rest of the group. It is a privilege to be church family together with them, to comfort them and pray with them into situations that are difficult to cope with. The children also enjoy telling us and each other about how God has been working in their lives during the week and how He has answered their prayers. Some of the children talk about how God speaks to them too.

We pray that God will protect and grow the children at KBC and for an increase in numbers. We pray that He will give us wisdom and guidance to enable them to go deeper with Him and we thank God for each and every one of them.

Since Christmas we have been using a new curriculum entitled ‘Raise Up Faith’. This contains more interactive teaching, which is where the children are at and they can

_Page 15 of 23_

## Crèche

Helen B

On the second Sunday of each month, we provide a supervised crèche for children under the age of three years who attend King’s Baptist Church. We already provided children’s groups for those of school age and above and felt that it was important for the younger members of our congregation to have some spiritual input, on a Sunday morning, and to learn about God, at their level.

We currently have a small team of people who help on the crèche rota and are always looking for more volunteers. Myself or Dawn lead the sessions with someone else in the room assisting – either Laura, Kathrin or Margaret T (who has joined the team recently and is a great asset). We are very thankful to God for the way that they use their skills and talents in the crèche and demonstrate their love for these children.

We currently follow a curriculum entitled ‘Toddlers Knowing God’, looking at the character of God e.g. God is my light, God is my shield etc. As you can imagine it’s not always easy to bring this down to the children’s level or for them to focus their attention for any length of time, but we always try to have some kind of story, practical activity, prayer and sometimes a song to engage them. We try to repeat the main point many times in the hope that something of what they have heard will go in! We usually have three or four children in the crèche and have been encouraged lately by a new child who has joined us on a few occasions. Our prayer for these little ones is that God will draw nearer to them and that they will get to know Him for themselves.

## Accelerate

Ceri, Naomi, Jane & Doug

We have had another lovely year at Accelerate. There have been some changes as Fran, Lillian and Nathan have moved on. We miss them a lot. Also, two of our older members of youth have outgrown us and so our numbers have decreased!

Accelerate has always been a group where we grow and deepen our faith in God on a practical level, never about numbers. We are grateful for whoever Father God brings. We had a great encouragement in the Autumn term as Jane O'Flanagan volunteered, by the prompting of the Holy Spirit, to come on board as a leader.

We concentrate on relevant Biblical teaching, worship, games and prayer. We intersperse these weeks with our in-house travelling Christmas meal, Craft evenings, Social evenings, Pancakes & Games and a Hot-Potato question & answer evening.

We aim to vary our programme so that we learn together in an enjoyable way.

We studied the book of Ruth leading up to Christmas so that we could naturally introduce the Lord Jesus Christ as our Redeemer.

We rely on your prayers and active interest in Accelerate. Thanks go to the many people who support us throughout the year. We thank and praise God for his faithful love.

Hospitality Steve

Our mission is to make everyone who enters the church feel welcome and looked after in more practical ways. This applies equally to all our regular congregation on Sunday mornings, visitors and people that come to any of our outreach events.

Hospitality is quite a broad remit and there are two main areas we focus on, Sunday services and events. The welcoming faces on the door and the after-service refreshments every Sunday are a result of our loyal hospitality volunteer team, and I would like to say a huge thank you to them for the time they give in this important area. The fresh flowers you see at the front of church are also generously provided by members of the team and are then given to people they think will be blessed to receive them.

A special shout out to Vicky who is always there to help with events (and keep me organised!) and to Angie for tag teaming with me on Christmas Eve.

Once again, thank you to all the volunteers who without, none of this would be possible – the welcomers, flower arrangers, tea makers, dessert making supremos, washer uppers, bakers and buyers. It is you who play a vital role in making KBC the warm, welcoming church it is!

We are always happy to get more volunteers to either serve on one of the rotas or help out at events. If this is an area you feel called to serve in then please do let me know!

We also run a number of events throughout the year. This started with the fun family games & pancake evening in February (thank you to Kate and Lindsay for doing all the organising!). We had two lovely, shared lunches during the year which were well attended.

For the light party at the end of October we welcomed well over 100 adults and children to the church for a range of craft activities. We also cooked and served 180 hotdogs which were very well received!

December was, as always, a busy month. We had our Christmas Family Feast, following the carol service, where we fed almost 100 with a hot meal and some great desserts. On Christmas Eve we did a Christmas Day lunch for around 30 people for the Home from Home group (and helpers) which was a huge success.

## KBC Men

Matt

In the past year we have met many times for breakfast. We also enjoyed a Christmas meal with the men from King’s Community Church in Letchworth. These were great times just to chat and get to know each other more.

## KBC Women

Dawn

The Ladies breakfast has been going well. We regularly have 10-12 ladies attending. We have a short talk and some fellowship time just after we have eaten a huge breakfast. We have been going to The Premier Inn in Letchworth, which is good value, and they are very accommodating with allergies etc.

Thank you to everyone who has been willing to do a small talk, they have all been challenging and given us something to ponder on.

If you would like to join us anytime, please do let me know. It will be interesting to see where God leads us over the next year. I am grateful for all the ladies who have come along and helped to make this group as special as it is, thank you!

## Small Groups (1)

Doug and Ceri

The house group we attend is held fortnightly at the home of Gary and Jane.

Doug opens in prayer and we have teaching and guided discussion on the passages for the evening and all are welcome to add their own insights or ask questions. Over the past year we have explored ‘God’s Rescue Plan’.

We conclude with a time of open prayer for the needs of our church family and our own needs.

Since the Autumn term we have not met as often as we would like due to ongoing health issues of the members of the group.

Our hope is to continue to grow in our faith, to support one another as we walk with Jesus through our lives.

## Small Groups (2)

Michael & Alison

The group meets on Monday mornings, from 10am, during term times.

We enjoy a time of catching up together over coffee and then move on to worship, prayer and Bible study. It’s really good to hear everyone’s thoughts and perspective on the subject chosen and to be encouraged and challenged by this and by praying for one another.

We started the year learning about virtues from the Bible such as love, hope, faith, justice, integrity, righteousness, perseverance and ended it looking at what we can learn from women in the Bible.

We have enjoyed good fellowship in a small, safe, home environment.

We begin each evening with a time of fellowship. During this time, we share experiences in our lives in a safe place which enables us to pray for one another in a special way. We aim to support one another practically throughout the week, not just on a Tuesday evening.

## Connect

Helen B

‘Connect’ face to face meetings continued to run throughout 2023, every first Tuesday of the month, during term time. Numbers have dwindled from previous years and we now have between 2 and 8 people attending each month. Occasionally we had a representative from a local organisation present such as ‘Carers in Bedfordshire’ to answer questions and give advice to parents. We always have delicious homemade cake, faithfully made by Steve, that we have come to be renowned for and is very popular. Many good relationships have been built and often people just attend for one or two sessions. It helps parents to know that they are understood and not alone in their situation. Many thanks to KBC for kindly providing our venue and for the support of the leadership in this ministry. It isn’t a Christian outreach but as I’ve said before it isn’t an accident that God has arranged for it to be held in the church building. I have been able to share KBC events with the ‘Connect’ group that some members and their families have attended. It has been helpful that they know they and their children will be made to feel welcome here and are understood.

medication, their legal rights, how to access financial support etc. We also try to take care of the wellbeing of parents themselves through articles and supporting them individually if appropriate.

Thank you for your continued support and prayers. If you come across any parents of special needs children, please let them know about the ‘Connect’ Facebook group and ask me if you would like further information.

The private Facebook group is flourishing and now has over 800 members in it across Central Bedfordshire and the UK. Members have to answer questions before they are allowed to join. They are then able to access online support through relevant articles that we post relating to special needs children and information about how to access support and training. They often ask questions in the face-to-face group and online about strategies other parents use, specific disabilities, schools, the council, how to fill in paperwork,

## Works of Heart

Vicky

Works of Heart has been and still is a gentle group that is about “oneanothering” first and a place to share experiences and skills where possible.

‘Have a go’ is probably a good phrase that applies to us.

We don’t profess to be experts; we just encourage each other in life and learn new crafting ideas t’boot.

Since my last report, we have had new members appear as a result of chats at the ‘Home from Home’ group. Also, the lovely Gina! She has agreed to do some demos this year too.

We have had fun doing various crafts, with the main prerogative of ‘passing on’ something special and seeing good things achieved.

God has provided wonderful people to demo, materials and imaginative ideas, over the years, and I want to give Him the glory for everything.

The support of others through demos, prayer and great kindness is also greatly appreciated more than words can express.

## Balancing the Yoke (BTY)

## Jane O

Balancing the Yoke, known as BTY, is a group that has been running at KBC for over 8 years, it is led by Jane O and Heather and has six active members, four associate members and a whole church family of prayer warriors & supporters. It is a prayer and support group for members whose partners are not yet saved and meets monthly at Jane’s home.

In the past year we have shared in the Lectio prayer course, focusing on hearing from God in this noisy, often very distracted world and lives we live in, going deeper in prayer and learning to Trust God in all things especially with our husbands. There have been a number of health issues in the group which we have been able to share on our prayer WhatsApp group, which has been a deep encouragement. We are currently looking at Pete Greig’s book God on Mute, looking at sitting in and trusting God with unanswered prayer. We are also considering working through the Alpha course together to help with the often-challenging conversations we encounter with our husbands and wider family.

We have had many answers to prayer and seen an obvious softening and more openness towards our faith in our husbands, we give God the glory for His faithfulness in ALL things. We would again like to thank our KBC family for their ongoing love, encouragement and prayer support, to us as a group and individually.

## Home from Home

## Dawn

Home from Home (originally Warm Spaces) has been growing throughout the year. We run from 1-4pm every Wednesday (apart from 2 weeks at Christmas, when the Need Project did their Christmas Food Parcels). All the people who attend love to come and enjoy chatting, doing jigsaws and eating cake! On average we have around 20 people attend each week, this does not include helpers, who willingly help set up each week, serve refreshments and put things away after. As well as making sure no one sits there on their own with no one to talk

_Page 20 of 23_

to. Knitting hasn’t played such a huge part this year, but we still have our knitters, and everyone loves to make new friends. People have commented on what a friendly group it is and that it has helped them meet some new people when they have just arrived in the area.

This year we had a cream tea (which was donated by local business) for around 20 people. We had some games and a good laugh. We also had a Christmas Meal on Christmas Eve after the Sunday morning service. This went down very well, and many have commented they would love to have it again next year. Comments were that it was better than the pub Christmas dinner they’d had recently.

We have had one lady attend our Ladies Breakfasts and a few people have asked for prayer. We are building relationships with our community and who knows where it will lead? Thank you to everyone who has given up their time to help us make this a great success.

Churches Together in Stotfold (CTS) Helen W

2023 saw another successful year of Churches Together activities.

Our first event of the year was the service of Christian Unity in January 2023. Alistair led a very thought-provoking service at KBC on racial justice, followed by refreshments. There was also a Churches Together Worship Band led by Helen W.

Throughout the winter months our network of CTS Warm Spaces across Stotfold, coordinated by Helen W at KBC, continued to offer places where people could keep warm and receive free refreshments. Some of these spaces have continued as social spaces throughout the

year . As a group of churches from the start of December 2023 we have been supporting the Tuesday “Stotfold Community” coffee mornings from 9am - 1pm at the Greenacres centre, again facilitated by Helen W with her Town Councilor hat on.

In early February there was a fantastic response from Churches Together to Rev Bill’s flash appeal for clothing and financial donations to help clothe the 46 male asylum seekers who were housed at Days Inn, at the Baldock services. Donations also enabled Radwell village hall to be used for weekly English lessons for the asylum seekers until they were moved to other locations in the springtime.

May saw Christian Aid week. A total of £2079.59 was raised. The Cream Tea at Stotfold Mill, organised by Clare from KBC, was a great success.

In November the Town’s Remembrance service was led by CTS alongside the British Legion. The attendance was excellent and included two local MPs.

In December the wet weather led to Carols by Torchlight becoming Carols by Candlelight once more. We were very grateful to the Salvation Army band for playing and to the Open the Book group for their nativity drama. The service was very well attended and well received, as was the innovation of hot chocolate and mince pies afterwards. We served sixty cups of hot chocolate and the collection, made in support of the Need Project, raised £268.82.

## Treasurer’s Report

Jane Sprittles

When the baton of Treasurer was passed to me, in February 2023, I inherited a £38,750 Deficit budget (projected income £50,000 and expenditure £88,750). The 2023 Accounts show a £5,837 Deficit – demonstrating once again that God is good!

At the Church Members’ Meeting in July, figures were presented to the members to show that the 2023 budget of £13,840 for Mission Giving worked out at 28% of budgeted income, which was unsustainable on a deficit budget. The members agreed with the Trustees’ recommendations that:

- Mission giving should be a minimum of 10% of unrestricted, undesignated income, (as stated in the KBC Constitution) but with a target of 15%.

- Giving to BU Home Mission, BU World Mission, Christian Initiative to Schools and the Need Project to be equal and adjusted retrospectively from January 2023.

- Adjustment to be made at the year-end if giving increases.

Actual Mission Giving for 2023 was £9,170. This equates to 17% of income from giving by church members and visitors and 13.6% of undesignated income (including Gift Aid).

In September, a Baptist Union 3-month Notice Account, was opened with £30,000 from the Current Account and £45,000 from the Baptist Union 7-Day Notice Account. In the three months this account was open £871 interest was earned; £571 more than if the money had not been moved.

Unrestricted income in 2023 was £67,418. With £15,000 extra given in tithes and offerings than budgeted for. Loose tithes and offerings have decreased substantially in 2023, one reason being that people now use / carry less cash.

Unrestricted expenditure and Mission Giving in 2023 was £73,643, (including £3,245 depreciation) more than £15,000 less than budget. Costs were lower than budget across the board, especially those for ‘Pastoral and Training’. This was in part due to pastoral costs having been inflated during the pandemic, when gifts of flowers had to be ordered and delivered through florists.

The spire was not repaired during 2023 so the designated fund of £15,000 remains untouched. Unbudgeted improvements to the building were made, including: replacement of fire door and remaining single glazed windows (£3,372), new smart TV (£1,200), hedge cutting / weed killing (£430).

During the year the accounts were moved on to ExpensePlus, a computerized accounts package for Churches and Charities. This has the advantages of being both cheaper and easier to use & understand than the previous package. It also allows for income and expenditure to be compared to budget, by any of the Trustees, at any time. I have also started to prepare and circulate finance papers, to all members, before Church Members’ Meetings. This allows people time to study the figures and come ready with any questions.

An initial draft budget for 2024 was presented to the November Church Members’ Meeting. Once all the 2023 expenditure was accounted for, the budget was revised for the January 2024 Church

_Page 22 of 23_

Members’ Meeting, and agreed at: income £56,000, expenditure £79,600, giving a deficit of £23,600.

Having now been ‘in the job’ for a year, I have some confidence in the 2024 budget, but I have even greater confidence in a God who loves and cares for us. Who knows what God has in store for 2024? I am sure he will provide the resources if we are obedient to His call and direction.
