0 # **Trustees’ annual report & accounts** **for the year ended** ## **31 March 2023** The British Union of Spiritist Societies is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. BUSS is its operating name. Charity registration number ## **1136512** Registered Office Oxford House, Derbyshire Street, London E2 6HG . ## **Objectives and activities** 1. The British Union of Spiritist Societies (BUSS) exists as a Charity for the advancement of the Spiritist religion for the benefit of the public in accordance with the Christian principles established in the Five Books of the Spiritist Codification (the Spirits’ Book, the Mediums’ Book, the Gospel according to Spiritism, Genesis, and Heaven and Hell). 2. BUSS updated its Constitution and now is CIO, since November 2019. We are a nonprofit organisation and, in accordance with our Charity’s objectives, we promote the study and dissemination of the moral values of the Spiritist Christian principles. We do this by: 3. hosting seminars, conferences and educational events, supplying Spiritist publications through our bookstore, and giving leadership, counselling and advice to Spiritist societies and groups across the UK. 4. At BUSS we seek to provide public benefit in all that we do. We confirm that the trustees have given due consideration to the Charity Commission’s published guidance on the Public Benefit requirement under the Charities Act 2011. In addition, we ensure that this guidance and other relevant Charity Commission guidance are provided to every trustee on their election into office. 5. All of our CIO-Charity’s workers are unpaid volunteers. We are very grateful to them for donating their time, gifts and skills, and we are very grateful to BUSS’s friends for their financial support. These generous donations of time, skills and funds have enabled BUSS to have had yet another successful year in promoting Spiritist Christian values. ## **Achievements and performance** 6. BUSS continues to work towards spreading spiritual teaching in the light of Spiritism and Christianity. We are committed to promoting social inclusion, harmony and spiritual growth to whoever gets in touch with our CIO-charity. 7. The main channels used by BUSS to promote Spiritist teachings are events, lectures, and books. Continuing the trend post-pandemic, many of our activities are hybrid combining online and face to face attendance, allowing for wider participation of spiritist groups spread in the UK as well as other parts of the globe. 8. The referenced year was marked by the groups resuming their face to face activities. BUSS has extended the support available to groups transition into hybrid and presential to make this adaptation as smooth as possible. 9. Despite all challenges faced in the last couple of years, we continued with the initiatives started in the previous years. Several events, talks and more were planned and executed, as a result of the joint effort of our volunteers and partners which are described below. ## _**Our activities**_ 10. Books continued to be sold via Amazon FBA, which stores and delivers books directly to clients, without the need of a volunteer to pack and ship every single book. Via FBA, books are sent into Amazon warehouse according to sales, keeping a safe and low maintenance system. 11. BUSS extended the open call to every member that was in need of financial support to resume face-to-face meetings. 12. The Mediums’ book course was continued free of charge via zoom on Saturdays, which enhanced the spread of Spiritist knowledge, particularly regarding to mediumship topics. 13. BUSS co-sponsored with wone of its members (SSL) an online course named ‘Introduction to Spiritism’. 14. BUSS and partners continued the recurrent talks on different days of the week with guest from various countries to discuss Spiritist topics (for example, ‘Spiritual Light’, ‘Coffee Break with Kardec’ and ‘Time to Talk’. 15. On the 14[th] of May 2022, BUSS hosted the seminar: ‘Spiritist Education – The Dynamo of Evolution’ which was focused on the value of spiritist christian values for our daily lives. 16. As a celebration of the classic authors, in Jan 2023 we initiated series of monthly lectures regarding the life and books of Gabriel Delanne with the support of many groups from the UK and internationally. 17. In June BUSS organised the event ‘Building the Future’ which gathered members from multiple spiritist groups in the UK to share experiences and socialise. During the event two talks were organised covering the themes Fraternity and Mediumship. 18. On most months, BUSS participated in the online event: European Spiritist Gathering; ensuring the maintenance of relationship with other federations and groups outside the UK. 19. On 29[th] of October, BUSS joined forces with AME International and the British Spiritist Medical Association to bring to live the 9[th] British Congress on Medicine and Spirituality with the theme: Integrating Spiritist Healing into 21[st] Century Medicine. 20. BUSS offered free donations of books (7 different titles) to individuals part of group members of the CIO. ## **Financial review** 21. In the year ending March 2023 our income was £5,992, compared to £10,826 in the previous year. Income from donations was £4,860. Our other income included £358 from conferences and events and £660 from sale of Spiritist publications. 22. We spent £15,789 in the year, compared to £11,609 in the previous year. Our main expenses were on rent, service charges and insurance £6933, on donations to charities £3249, and on publications for sale £2926. 23. Thank you to all our supporters! Overall BUSS’s costs exceeded income by £9796 in the year (compared to £800 excess in expenditure in the previous year). As a result, our reserves slightly decreased to £57680 as at March 2022. ## **Structure, governance and management** 24. BUSS is a charity registered in England and Wales and a company limited by guarantee. The company’s Memorandum and Articles of Association form BUSS’s governing document, and they set out BUSS’s objectives and governance arrangements. 25. BUSS’s trustees under the Charities Acts are the directors of the Company for the purposes of the Companies Acts. They receive no remuneration from BUSS. Trustees are elected from BUSS’s membership by the members at their annual general meeting. The trustees have decided to stablish a mission statement to more clearly articulate the purpose of the CIO and give guidance to the activities to be prioritised in the future months. The mission statement is the following: BUSS is devoted to disseminating Spiritism with the purpose to create waves of positive changes for individuals and the world. We pledge to focus on: - Promote the fraternal union of the spiritist institutions in the United Kingdom, and the unification of the national Spiritist Movement; - Promote the study, diffusion, and practice of the Spiritist teachings according to its principles and postulates, and in all its fundamental scientific, philosophical, religious, ethical, and moral aspects; - Support the member groups, offering at their request guidance on administrative, organisational, and theoretical topics; - Represent the Spiritist Movement in the United Kingdom. 27. As to achieve its mission, BUSS will be organised as follows: - Board of trustees: responsible to a) define the strategic direction and long-term guidelines, b) define and approve yearly plans and budget, and c) represent the Spiritist Movement in the UK. - Chairperson: Vanessa Parra - Treasurer: Rafael Caldas - Secretary: Adriano Sugimoto - Other Board Members: Davian Jessamy, Andre Abreu Silva - Executive body: responsible to execute the guidelines and plans during the year as per the board of trustees’ decision. The executive body will be formed by the trustees, any other volunteers interested in joining the work and third parties contracted by the charity. We ask the groups to share the information below with their member, so that anyone interested in joining the departments can reach out to the trustees and be onboarded. The executive body will be divided in the following departments: - Outreach and liaison - Relationship with current members, new groups and international cooperation - Marketing & Communications - Support the charity’s branding and digital presence by helping to promote events and initiatives, maintaining social media profile, communication materials, website, etc. - Spiritist knowledge - Management of BUSS book shop, translations, disseminate and support members’ initiatives in this front, etc. - Spiritist philoshophy - Organise courses, events, congresses on spiritist philosophy, disseminate and support members’ initiatives in this front, etc. - Spiritist science - Organise courses, events, congresses on mediumship, disseminate and support members’ initiatives in this front, etc. - Family, Youth and Children Spiritist Education - Organise courses, events, congresses on the topic, disseminate and support members’ initiatives in this front, etc. The work on each department will be prioritised dependent on the availability of volunteers from the group members ## **Plans for the future** 28. BUSS will continue to support Spiritist members and non-members groups to thrive in the dissemination of Spiritist teaching of love and care throughout the UK. Our activities will continue to be comprised mainly of talks, seminars, events and fraternal assistance. 29. We will remain completely open to any Spiritist group that is looking for help and guidance. Also, to interact with other religions and sectors that would benefit from the exchange of knowledge. ## **In conclusion** 30. The trustees would like to highlight our appreciation to our volunteers, members, donors and supporters, without whom our activities would not be possible. We are confident that our Spiritual Benefactors are side by side with us every single minute, guiding and providing all we need to successfully accomplish what needs to be done towards our spiritual growth. 31. As we progress in the world post pandemic and restructure ourselves, BUSS will keep providing Spiritist teachings to inspire people to have a more charitable life, filled with love and compassion.
