This has been another challenging year in Burt(ina Faso due to the ongoirfj security issues. with travel outside of
Ouagadougou still prohibited for UK visltots, so a declsion vms made to not make any visits this year. However, we hav8
again met staff from our main partners in the UK and online, and reporting and monitoring of projects online and using
nartphone apps has been i)Jrther developed arKI is provtiig successful.
Educallon
wrth an estimated literacy level of 30% in Burkina Faso ( one of the lowest in the wortd ), VR have conttnued our support for
edU￿tiOn, via our local partners, netsvork of 12 schools. Ourfng the year we supported projects indudlng:
• Ongoing support for 56 students and the bursary scheme, Ilnking inthvidual thildren in BU￿Ina Faso to their donors
. Ongoing salary support for rural teachers in Ratyiri School
. Providing 50,000 school meals per year to those most in need.
. Supporting an education project exdusiv8ly for girls.
. Supporting a Tailoring project with 40 students, induding glving tailoring kits to sts￿ents onc£ they'd carnpleted their studies
to establish themsefves in business.
. Sponsorlng a student nurse through the final year of her studtes.
. Supporting a literaGy project In villages east of Ouagadougou In Zougou arvj Doundoudougou resulting in 64 graduates in
literacy, numeracy and baslc buslness skills who are then helped to estsblish their Q•vn small agricultural businesses.
Water and 8anltatlon
W& are continuing our woth to provide more communities with access to clean. a￿essIble water togeth8r thryth good
88nitation and hygiene fa¢iliti8s and trainiw. believwig this should be a basic right for all.
Our major wells prolect is ¢ontinuing with a totsl of 182 wells rehabl￿tsted by the end of June 2024. This is providing dean
water to approximatsly 72.000 people. The funrfing for this is provided by working in partnetship with C02 Balance. a
UK-based trading cornpany, who obtsin carfoon uedits from the ¢art)on that ts Saved by households not having to boil
water to purify It.
Health
Burkina Faso sts'll faces major challenges in the health sector. Communicabl8 diseases continue to be the primary cause of
morbidity and mortality in the country. with malaria being the18rgest contributor to mortality for children under 5 years of age.
In addition, Burkina Faso did not fully meet Millennium Development Goals in child mortality. matemal mortality and
sanitation.
Ile support the Bethante Health Centra whlch Is the only m8dlcal facilty in a fa8t*rowlTrJ informal setdement on the outskir13
of Ouagadougou. Each year 8,000 peopb use the fracility.
We are currently supporting a project Sn coryunctton with the Ministry of Hoalth in Burf<ina Faso. where we improve the
facAlitss and increase the treatments on offer. with the govemment supporting costs for the poorest in the ￿mrnunty.
Agrfculture
Food supply 15 a key issue in Burkina Faso with 3.3 mill￿n of the population of 20 million facing acute food insecurity. We
aim to wort< wlth local communities to give them thè skills and tools necessary to establish their own small-scale agriculiural
projects and to help them develop vmys of ensuring a more reliable and less seasonal water supply. During the year we
8UPPOrted projects induding:
• Providing fijnding for two agricultural courses in Gourcy in the North Region enabliNJ 200 students to ieam the basics of
agricultural tec*niques.
. Providing agricuitural'kits, to 20 students to enable them to start their own small businesses.
• Expanding the I￿19a￿On system in Mako by funding 8n expansion of the pTeviously funded dam, enabling the reseNolr to
expand and give water to a larger area of irrigated land thioughout the year.
Publlc benefft
Th8 United Nations, ranks Burkina Fgso amongst the worfrfs poorest five countrigs In tern￿ of d8￿lOpMent. 1018 seek to
transfom the lives of some of the very poorest people on our planet, but atso aim to introduce people in the UK to the riches
of Burklnabe culture and hospitality, b4ieving Buthina Faso can be a blessing to the world.
