Chair’s Report for Friends of the Steiner Academy Hereford 1 July 2022
## – Report for the year October 2020 September 2021
The academic year 2020 – 2021 was another year disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, our fantastic school community rose to the challenges this posed to fundraising opportunities and showed the pandemic what they were made of. Despite another long lockdown from January 2021, and most indoor events made impossible all year, our parent body got creative and managed an incredible year’s fundraising, despite all the restrictions.
It was so wonderful to have all the children back into a fully open and functioning school for the Autumn term. However, we were still unable to hold indoor events or even the community workdays. There was no harvest supper, and we realised before long that we would be unable to hold an Advent Fair.
So, what did we do instead? We invented other ways to fundraise, some large, some small. Noah Hastings (Class 3) sold delicious apples from his garden, Paola and Geoffrey Jordan donated the sales of their Christmas trees, a couple of classes had tea towels printed with the children’s self-portraits on, which made excellent Christmas gifts.
Some Kindergarten parents put a call out for donations to take to a car boot fair, as these were still permitted. Attending two car boots in October and November, and selling some bits online, over £600 was raised.
In lieu of an Advent Fair, an Advent promise auction was held. Members of our community donated, and bid on, promises exceptionally generously. The result was incredible: close to £8,000 was raised.
An outdoor, socially distanced, mini winter market was held at school in December, where people could collect their promises, drink warm apple juice around the fire, eat pancakes and mince pies, and make an Advent wreath. It was a really lovely, low-key community event, much needed at the time.
From late December 2020, the nation went into another long lockdown. Kindergarten parents carried on fundraising, however, with a virtual balloon race and a sponsored walk raising an impressive £488 and £690 respectively.
At the end of April Class 3 held a very successful plant stall at school, and on the May Bank Holiday, Class 6 held a duck race at the Bridge Inn in Kentchurch. It poured with rain and there weren’t quite enough ducks to go round, but the food was good and everybody had a lot of fun anyway! Together with the plant stall that was there too, Class 6 managed to smash their target.
The children were all back in school for the summer term with lots of lessons, assemblies etc. held outside. The Hellens Garden Festival was able to go ahead in June. Although visitor numbers were restricted, the Steiner Diner sold all the food on the first day and more had
to be made quickly for the Sunday. As we were unable to run children’s activities, the Kindergartens made up and sold craft kits, and the Elder Tree clothes sale did well. The remainder of the apple juice was sold both by the bottle and by the glass. Friends invested in a pair of card readers, which allowed for contactless payment – essential for socially distanced events. Overall profit was £3,690 – not at all shabby!
On July 3 we held the Summer Fair – it was absolutely wonderful to hold a social event at school again. The bunting came out and there were stalls, strawberries and cream, games, and ice lollies – not to mention an exceptionally roaring trade in tea and cake. We were treated to a visit from the Blackthorn Border Morris who entertained us with their songs and dancing, and Royal and Susanne brought their ever-popular paint bike. A thoroughly enjoyable and much-needed community get together!
Later in July school mum Beth Cameron took on the massive challenge of running the Offa’s Dyke path without any support crew, wild camping along the way and enduring some serious hot weather, raising an impressive £1000 for our school – THANK YOU SO MUCH Beth! Individual initiatives like this make such a difference.
The new Autumn term allowed for the recommencement of community workdays and, as part of the Michaelmas workday, groups of parents again picked apples in Colin’s orchard and also at school. The result was 450 bottles of delicious juice, all ready for the next year’s fundraising efforts.
The lottery continues to grow slowly and the school shop sales are also doing very well. It has been decided that profits from the school shop will be used towards the provision of the various therapies that benefit those children who need them.
Unsurprisingly, the parent donations scheme remains below its pre-pandemic levels; nevertheless, Friends still received the very-much-appreciated sum of £38,000. Together with monies from fundraising, Friends has been able to fulfil its promise of passing £57,900 to school for this academic year.
The total amount raised by fundraising for the year was £26,000 – a truly remarkable figure, considering the restrictions in place. Well done to all those who worked hard to fundraise and a huge, heartfelt THANK YOU from your Friends Committee. Our children and this community are truly lucky to have such a supportive parent body.

||I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above
charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended**30 September 2021**.
As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the
accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011
(“the Act”).|||
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
**Independent** I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have **examiner's statement** come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
- the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
- the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
- the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
