Chair’s Annual Report 2022-2023
This year seems to have passed very quickly, especially as the Covid restrictions have faded away. Yet we will all remember 2022 for Her Majesty Elizabeth II’s Jubilee celebrations just before our last AGM, and her death in September. On behalf of all our members, my thanks go to the group leaders and the members of the Committee who have made it possible to continue and expand the activities we have on offer. We have returned to the usual venue for our General Meetings and they are increasingly well attended. We have a wide range of topics presented at these events: they are well worth coming to on the first Tuesday of the month. My thanks to the groups who have assisted with teas and coffee. At our AGM last May, the committee membership was confirmed without a vote as there were no contested appointments. Tony Grzybek, Terry Robinson and Kate Ross are standing down in June at the end of their elected term on the committee. Thank you for your time and commitment. Jane Wicks retired as Membership Secretary during the year, after long unstinting service to u3a. Several members have joined the Committee during the year; initially co-opted they have been nominated for specific roles in the new Committee. On a lovely bright September day, we had a very busy and useful recruitment and information stall on Ely market. My thanks to the groups who provided pictures and the volunteers who answered the questions and promoted our u3a. You will have noticed that our popular day trips and holidays have returned. Our thanks go to Ashley and his team for organising and enabling these to go ahead. Following the trips in September, Ashley and his team are standing down from this role. We are hugely indebted to them all for the dedication they have given to ensuring such wonderful holidays and outings over many years. As your Chair, I have attended the Area u3a Conference in Chelmsford, seminars on ways to develop and support lifelong learning, contingency planning and a cardiac arrest training session which was held for any interested member of our u3a. We have continued to move to a membership data system supplied by u3a National Office, called Beacon. Many of the group leaders are now using the system. It makes communication easier for everyone. We are also using newer
technologies, including taking payment by debit and credit cards, and through BACS. I hope that, as we can now meet family and friends and pursue the activities we enjoy, u3a will be able to offer you more opportunities to be sociable. My thanks to all of you for your support and encouragement. It is amazing what we can achieve when we work together to help one another and `learn, laugh, live´.
