TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT for the year 2025
OUR YEAR
Our Electoral Roll was down to 69 at the APCM in 2025, but the number had gone up to 77 by the end of the year. Financially it was a challenging year. We paid some more instalments of the diocesan loan for the Bridge. We also managed to pay our 2025 Parish Contribution to the Diocese, but not until January 2026. So 2026 has started with funds very low and the possibility that we shall be unable to pay our 2026 Parish Contribution in full. Church members continue to work hard to raise money for the essential repairs to the tower and the chancel.
Messy Church continues to be successful as does the Little Friends group for mothers or carers with tiny children. The Mothers' Union branch is flourishing as are the Friendship Teas, the Craft Corner and the Rainbow Shop. The Sunday Kids' Group is serving our small band of children well.
Highlights of the year were a Mission Week in June and an Art Exhibition in October.
We are in the middle of the diocesan Minster Communities project, which will mean some changes to our way of working, with a sharing of resources for mission. St Andrew's Countesthorpe is taking part in discussions with ten other churches with a view to forming a Minster Community.
The Church
St Andrew’s Church is a Grade II Listed building. The church was rebuilt in 1907, but its 13[th] /14[th] century tower was retained and now holds eight bells. In more recent years the church has had a new roof, new electrical wiring and sound and projection equipment. The pews have been replaced with chairs and the old organ has been replaced with an electronic one. The main entrance now has glass inner doors and new steps and railings enhance it even more. The floor was refurbished in 2019.
The church is situated on Main Street, Countesthorpe, LEICESTER LE8 5QX, and is part of the Four Saints Benefice, with Foston, Peatling Magna and Willoughby Waterleys.
There is a church hall called The Cornerstone. The church’s premises at 1 Main Street, next to the church, include a shop and a flat, both let to tenants, and The Bridge building, which has toilets, the church office, the Rainbow Shop and a meeting room. The Rainbow Shop is run by volunteers from St Andrew's, other local churches and the community and it raises funds for the interdenominational charity Christian Aid. Visitors can be sure of a cup of tea and a chat there. The Bridge meeting room is used by a number of organisations as well as church groups.

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) co-operates with the Minister in promoting in the Parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelical, social and ecumenical.

A church is more than the building, it is people living real lives with real joys and real concerns in community and relationship. At St Andrew’s, we are attempting to live life in the light of the grace and love that has been shown to us in God, God’s Son Jesus and the gift of the Holy Spirit. We long to share God’s hope, grace, strength, and welcome.

Finance
The funding needed comes mainly from the donations of individuals and a few fundraising initiatives during the year. Much of the upkeep of the Cornerstone and No 1 Main Street is funded by rent and fees for lettings. A Parish Contribution is paid to the Diocese of Leicester for the salaries of the stipendiary clergy and central services.
In 2025 Funds were raised by a Quiz Night, Coffee Mornings, a Vicarage Tea Party, Beetle Drives, a Loose Change Appeal, a meal at the Axe and Square public house and the annual Garden Party and Christmas Fayre. The Christmas Fayre raised over £1,000 and the Garden Party over £900. Curate Cam and his wife Harriet raised over £900 with a run in May. In September St Andrew's took part in the Historic Churches Trust Ride and Stride event.
Structure of the PCC
The PCC is a corporate body established and operating under the Church Representation Rules of the Church of England and is Registered Charity No 1135711.
The PCC normally holds five meetings during the year. The Standing Committee, made up of the Rector, the Curate, the Churchwardens, the Lay Vice-Chair, the Treasurer, the Secretary and two members elected by the PCC, prepares the agendas. Various PCC sub-groups are set up from time to time.

There were 77 people on the church Electoral Roll at 31 December 2025. Sunday attendance when the service was at 9am was 45-50 adults and up to 9 children in Sunday School; when the servfce was at 11am 35-40 adults. In addition other families attended Messy Church.
Ministry/People
The Rector of the Four Saints Benefice is the Revd Richard Reakes. At the end of June 2025 Assistant Curate in Training, the Revd Cameron Wiltshire-Plant, was ordained Priest, having served as Deacon for a year. The occasion was celebrated with a lunch at St Andrew's. A retired priest with Permission-to-Officiate (the Revd Mick Gillespie) officiates at some of our services. The Benefice has two Reader Ministers (June Ainge and Lindsey Jelves) and four Associate Ministers (Gail Mackley, Jacqui McAughey, Michael Oates and Helen Stokes).
The church's architect is Simon Bird.
The PCC employs a Benefice Administrator (Emma Adams) and a Premises Officer (Tony Cuthbert).
Worship and Groups
There is currently one service on a Sunday - alternating between Holy Communion at 9am and a contemporary style Morning Praise at 11am. We use the Common Worship liturgy. During the 9am service there is a 'Kids' Group' in the Bridge. Mid-week Holy Communion is held at 9.30am on Thursdays. Morning Prayer is said in church at 8am from Monday to Saturday. 'Messy Church' is held on the third Saturday of each month. On some Sunday evenings there is 'An Hour Wlth God' in church. If there is a fifth Sunday in the month just one service is held at 10am in one church in the Benefice, in turn. This service is well attended and at other times some of St Andrew's members attend services in the other churches of the Benefice. From Easter 2025 St Andrew's resumed the use of the common cup at Holy Communion, after the end of the Covid restrictions.
Home Communion is provided for those who cannot get to church and this includes ministry to the Cherrytree Residential Care Home. There is a Whats App prayer and support group. The church has mid-week groups for Bible study and prayer. In 2025 there was a Lent course called 'Practicing the Way', based on the book by John Mark Corner. There was also an Advent course. There is a regular Craft Group.
The tower team ring the bells on Sunday mornings and for weddings. We are able to call on a small number of organists, musicians and singers to lead worship and, when they are not available, we have recorded music and, at the 11am service, recorded songs on video.
Except during Lent, the church is enhanced with delightful arrangements of flowers.
We are also grateful to the group of people who help the Churchwardens with minor repairs from time to time.
St Andrew’s has a long-established Mothers’ Union branch, which has a full programme of monthly meetings, including the Rally in October, hosted by St Andrew’s and attended by friends from around the Deanery and the other denominations in the village.
The church takes part in the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in January, the ecumenical World Day of Prayer service in early March and a Good Friday Walk of Witness.
A group from the Benefice went to the New Wine event at Shepton Mallet in the summer.
Harvest celebrations in 2025 included the annual Harvest Supper.
New members are welcome to join our groups.
Outreach to the Community
Funerals and weddings take place in St Andrew’s Church and the 11.00am service sometimes includes a baptism. On these occasions St Andrew’s endeavours to offer a welcome and ongoing pastoral care.
In May the village celebrated the 80[th] Anniversary of VE Day and the church bells were rung.
In June there was a Mission Week facilitated by students from Holy Trinity Leicester. Leaflets were taken round the village and there was a Healing Service and a Community Fun Day.

St Andrew’s hosts the Remembrance Service for the whole village, in the churchyard, where the village War Memorial is situated. Scouts and Guides attend. The Scouts held their carol service in the church in 2025..
In October 2025 St Andrew's hosted a popular Art Exhibition in aid of the Alzheimer's Society.
Halloween saw St Andrew's members outside the church offering "Treats on the Street" - refreshments, activities and prayer.

The annual Service of Light was held again in 2025. This is a well-attended SeN1 when people are enabled to remember the loved ones they have lost. Greenfield Primary School held Iheir carol service in St Andrew's Church in 2025. Before Christmas St Andrew's members sang carols at Cherrytree Residential Care Home. A Carols and Cake aftemoon was held in the Bridge. St And$ carol service was held in December 2025 and on Christmas Eve there were Christingle ServIS and a Midnight Communion. The Comerslone and The Bridge are used regularly by church and outside groups. There are Friendship Te8s' on a Monday afternoon. On a Thursday aftemoon during tem time there is a group called Litle FrTrds, for mothers or carers wf(h tiny Children. As mentioned, the Rainbow Shop offers a welcome. 11 sent £16,000 lo Christian Aid in 2025. A May Fayre was held to ¢oir>cide with Chrislian Aid Week. There was also a Mini~Fayre in October. The Bridge garden is a quiet space accessible to the community, vwth a dedicated team to maintain it. As a founder member of the Countesthorpe Foodbank the church continues to support it. Safeguarding and Other Policies The church has Safeguarding Policies for both children and vulnerable adults. The PCC has adopted the House of Bishops, Guidance. It has a Slatement on Domestic Abuse and a policy for the recruitment of ex-offenders. It also has a Health and Safety Policy, a Lone Worf(ing Policy. an EqualÉty and DNersity Policy and a Data Protection Policy. Communication st Andrews has a benefice website (www.standrewscounleslhorpe.co.uk). There is a St Andrew's Church & The Bridge Facebook page and a St Andrew's Church Facebook group. The church also contributes a section in the local village newspaper, wth the Baptist and Methodist churches. The newspaper is delivered free to every home and is available online. There is a weekly news sheet for church members called Whats On Where (WOWJ, which can also be downloaded from the benefice website. Financial Review We expected that this would be a challenging year financially, and so it has proved to be. The Restoration Fund for the urgent church building repairs has been very well supported by many fundraising initiatives by church members, and the local community have also contributed, with the balance increasing by the year end to £18,235. We have repaid a further £6,000 of the Diocesan loan for the Main Street building, bringing the balance down to £62,000. However there was a loss on General Funds of £8,811 and we did not manage lo pay our full Parish Contribution lo the Diocese by the year end. We paid the final 2025 inslalment in January 2026, as is permitted by them. This means that we stsrted 2026 with church General Funds very low, with no reserves (net current liabilities of £5,913). It is unlikely that we will be able to pay the full Contribution this year unless we have a significant change in circumstances. We must of course continue to pray for God's guidance and provision. We remain very grateful lo those who give faithfully to support the church's ministry, enabling Ihe services and outreach at St Andrew's to continue. We have reviewed the valuation of the Main Street building this year based on market rents and have accordingly increased its valuation in the accounts by £18,000. The financial 5taTements have been prepared under the hlstorlcal cost conventlon and on the Going Concern basis. Funds Restricted funds represent donations or grants received for a specific object or invited by the PCC for a specific object. The funds may only be expended on the specific object for which they were given. General funds represent the funds of the PCC that are not subject to any restrictions regardlng rhelr use and are available for application on the general purpose5 of the PCC. Funds designated for a particular purp05e by the PCC only are also unrestricted. The accounts include all tran5action5, assets and liabilitie5 for which the PCC is responsible in law. They do not include the accounts of church groups that owe their main affiliation to another body or those that are informal gatherings of church members. They are listed in the church's Inventory which can be inspected lat any reasonable timel. For inalienable property acquired prior to about 1990 there is insufficient tost information available and therefore such assets are not valued in the accounts. Items acquired since l January 1990 have been capitalised in the accounts and are now being depreciated on a straight line basis over 10 year5. their currently anticipated useful economic life. The railings and gates, having a much longer anticipated useful life, are being depreciated on a straight line basis over 40 years. All expenditure incurred in the year on consecrated or beneficed buildings. or individual items under about £IOOO. or on the repair of moveable church furnishings acquired before 1990, is written off. Parochial Church Council of St Andrew Countesthorpe Independent Examiners report to the Trustees of Parochial Church Council of St Andrew Countesthorpe I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2025, which are set out on the attached pages. Respertive responslbllitles of Trustees and Examlner As the charity's trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the ac¢ounts- you consider the audit requirement of s144121 of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) does not apply. and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts un(ler s145 of the 2011 Act- to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charities Commission under s145{5llbl of the 2011 Act. and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. Basls of Independent Examiners pOrt My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and the seeking of explanations frorn you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in audit and, conseouently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a "true and fair view, and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
