Diocese of Leicester, Guthlaxton Deanery Parochial Church Council of **ST ANDREW’S CHURCH, COUNTESTHORPE Registered Charity No 1135711**

## **TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT for the year 2020**

## _**OUR YEAR**_

**At the time of writing the Four Saints Benefice is still in interregnum, but we hope that a new Rector will be appointed shortly.**

**The Churchwardens, our lay ministers and church members have been working hard to keep the church going, with help from two retired priests and, in October 2020, we were glad to welcome a seconded Assistant Curate.**

**Most of our activities have been on hold since early 2020 because of the Covid19 virus. The Sunday morning online service, mostly prepared in people's homes, continues. The PCC and one or two other groups have been holding meetings on Zoom. Church members have kept in touch with each other by telephone or WhatsApp and there has been a scheme in place to match a list of volunteers to those who needed help. We look forward to the time when we can resume our normal activities.**

## _**The Church**_

St Andrew’s Church is a Grade II Listed building. The church was rebuilt in 1907, but its 13[th] century tower was retained and now holds eight bells. In more recent years the church has had a new roof and new electrical wiring and sound and projection equipment. The pews have been replaced with chairs and the old organ has been replaced with an electronic one. The main entrance now has glass inner doors and the new steps and railings enhance it even more. The floor was refurbished in 2019.

The church is situated on Main Street, Countesthorpe, LEICESTER LE8 5QX, and is part of the Four Saints Benefice, with Foston, Peatling Magna and Willoughby Waterleys. Its web address is: www.standrewscountesthorpe.co.uk.

There is a church hall called The Cornerstone. The church’s premises at 1 Main Street, next to the church, include a shop and a flat, both let to tenants, and the new Bridge building with toilets, the church office, the Rainbow Shop and the new meeting room. The Rainbow Shop is run by volunteers from St Andrew's, other local churches and the community and it raises funds for the interdenominational charity Christian Aid. In normal times visitors can be sure of a cup of tea and a chat there.

## _**The Church’s Mission**_

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) co-operates with the Minister in promoting in the Parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelical, social and ecumenical.

## _Mission Statement_

We wish to be

a transformed people who love God and each other,

a people set on fire by the Gospel of Jesus Christ,

a community that wants to share His Story with everyone we can, seed-throwers and fire-starters, hope-peddlers and grace-givers, risk-takers and dreamers, young and old.

We aim

to seek the lost, empower the poor, strengthen the weak, embrace the outcast. We want

to serve together, play together, worship together, pray together, laugh together, cry together, learn together and live life together,

to grow as a church in numbers and in loving service

and to see our village changed by the love God has given to us to share.

The funding needed comes mainly from the donations of individuals and a few fundraising initiatives during the year. Much of the upkeep of the Cornerstone and No 1

Main Street is funded by rent and fees for lettings. A Parish Contribution is paid to the Diocese of Leicester for the salaries of the stipendiary clergy and central services.

## _**Structure of the PCC**_

The PCC is a corporate body established and operating under the Church Representation Rules of the Church of England and is Registered Charity No 1135711.

The PCC normally holds five meetings during the year. The Standing Committee, made up of the Clergy, the Churchwardens, the Lay Vice-Chair, the Treasurer, the Secretary and two members elected by the PCC, prepares the agendas. Various sub-groups are set up from time to time.

The benefice has four Reader Ministers (June Ainge, who is also Pioneer Minister for Messy Church, Helen Stokes, who is also a prison chaplain,

Michael Oates and Lindsey Jelves) and a Pastoral Assistant (Gail Mackley). A Lay Evangelist (Michael Turton, Archbishops' Evangelist) has recently moved to Scotland. Lay ministry is actively encouraged. Two ministers with Permission-to-Officiate (the Revd Rod Allard and the Revd Mick Gillespie) lead many of our services. A Reader Minister with Permission-to-Officiate (John Frakes), passed away in August 2020.

## _**Worship and Groups**_

In normal times, church members are served by a wealth of services of worship and other activities. On Sundays there is a ‘traditional’ Holy Communion service at 9.00am, using Common Worship. The 11.00am service is more informal and varied. Mid-week Holy Communion is at 9.30am on Thursdays. Children attend their own groups on two Sundays in the month, but on the other Sundays there is all-age worship, sometimes Holy Communion, in which children and young people take a full part. Normally 'Messy Church' is held on the third Saturday of each month, and currently online. The young people have their own mid-week group, Breathe, which also meets once a month on a Sunday. They have been meeting via Zoom over the past year. Home Communion is provided for those who cannot get to church and there is a visiting team. The church also has a Wholeness and Healing Prayer Ministry Team. There are several small midweek groups and a morning Bible study group.

St Andrew’s has a long-established Mothers’ Union branch, which normally has a full programme of monthly meetings, including the Rally in October hosted by St Andrew’s and a Deanery Advent Carol Service. The church takes part in the annual ecumenical Women’s World Day of Prayer service in February or March. In normal times there has been a Men’s Group called MAFIA (Men And Faith In Action). There is a regular Craft Corner. Music groups work faithfully and competently to lead the Sunday worship and other events. The tower team ring the bells before the Sunday morning service and for weddings. New members are welcomed to all groups.

## _**Outreach to the Community**_

When restrictions allow, funerals take place in St Andrew’s Church and occasional weddings. The 11.00am service sometimes includes a baptism. On these occasions St Andrew’s endeavours to offer a welcome and ongoing pastoral care.

A close relationship is maintained with the local schools and we have links with the Scout and Guide organisations.

St Andrew’s normally hosts the Remembrance Service for the whole village. In 2020 there was an online service, with wreath laying at the war memorial in the churchyard, filmed beforehand.

At the end of November the annual Service of Light took place online. This is a service when people are enabled to remember their loved ones. There is a group called 'Tranquillity' for carers, people who have been bereaved or anyone else who would like to attend. A carol service took place online and a Midnight Communion. There was a Christingle service online.

Normally The Cornerstone and The Bridge are used regularly by church and outside groups. There are ‘Friendship Teas’ and there is a group for parents and pre-school children called ' _Let's Go'_ .

Work continues on the Bridge garden, where a quiet space is being created for the community.

As a founder member of the Countesthorpe Foodbank the church continues to support it. Similarly we support the Community Fund for which money is raised by the collection of newspapers.

## _**Safeguarding and Other Policies**_

The church has a Safeguarding Co-ordinator and Policies for both children and vulnerable adults. The PCC has adopted the House of Bishops' Guidance. It has a Statement on Domestic Abuse. It also has a Health and Safety Policy, an Equality and Diversity Policy and a Data Protection Policy.

## _**Communication**_

3

AnnRep2020

St Andrew's has an informative website. There is a St Andrew's Church and the Bridge Facebook page and a St Andrew's Church Facebook group. The church also contributes a section in the local village newspaper, with the Baptist and Methodist churches - the newspaper is delivered free to every home and is available online. There is a weekly news sheet for church members called _What’s On Where (WOW)._

## _**Financial Review**_

Thankfully, a very unpredictable year has resulted in balanced cash flow. The income from both donations and rents was much reduced, and there was little opportunity for fundraising. However there were different sources of income, such as Job Retention Scheme grants from HM Revenue and Customs as a result of the Premises Officer being furloughed, and also many one-off donations which helped to compensate for the lack of Sunday collections. Regular givers continued to give faithfully. Expenditure was also significantly reduced, mainly as a result of the Diocese offering the opportunity to reassess our Parish Contribution offer for the year. As a result our income was sufficient to meet our expenses, as well as repaying a total of £17,000 of the Diocesan loan capital. The year to come is looking similarly unpredictable, but we start from a reasonably comfortable position.

_Reserves Policy._ At present we do not have a sufficient surplus to put into a separate reserve fund. However if we ever do it is our policy to invest in the CBF Church of England Deposit Fund.

## _**Church Opening**_

The church was opened on Sunday 18 April for its first 2021 Covid-compliant service and one or two other groups have been able to meet in person.

## _**New Rector**_

On Sunday 2 May it was announced that the Bishop had appointed the new Rector of the Four Saints Benefice. He is the Revd Richard Reakes, who is currently Team Vicar of Bishop’s Cleeve and Woolstone with Gotherington and Oxenton Team Ministry in the Diocese of Gloucester.

Richard’s service of Institution and Induction will be conducted by Bishop Martyn on Sunday 8 August 2021 at 4.30pm at St Andrew’s Church Countesthorpe.
