We seek to utilise and ensure the abilities and skills of lay people fully in the Circuit and encourage others to explore and offer themselves for service at all levels as equal partners in our work. As a Methodist Circuit, we put into action the different elements of our Methodist Calling in our Worship, our Learning and Caring, our Service and our Evangelism, always striving to put Jesus first. We have a heart for nurturing and shaping disciples. We are deeply committed to evangelism and social outreach. Our ministry is to City, towns, suburbs and villages. There are currently ten churches in the Peterborough Circuit. In addition, Methodist ministers and Local Preachers lead the service at Yarwell (an Anglican Church) once a month, where there is a Methodist class. Three of our churches: Whittlesey, Westgate New Church and Christ Church are Local Ecumenical Partnership’s (LEPs). The Peterborough Circuit is part of the Northampton District of the Methodist Church, which seeks to be a place where there is diversity and vibrancy, and a place where everyone can feel welcomed, a place where we can all flourish and grow in our discipleship. We have good links and regular communication with our District office staff. Trustees of the Circuit Meeting met four times during the year. ## CIRCUIT STRATEGY As a result of the Vision Mornings (Sankofa) it was decided to seek a single station circuit from September 2025 and to enter stationing for a full-time Superintendent. The Circuit Stewards worked on the profile and in the first round of stationing the circuit was visited by Reverend Colin Sherwood who accepted the challenge, and agreed to join the circuit on the 1st September 2025. The Circuit said farewell to Revd Langley Mackrell Hay and Revd Janet Titterton at the end of July as lay worker. Tim Wong left his post to take up ordination training at Queens College Birmingham. Our lay Pastoral Assistant worker Suzanne Delegate will continue her work with the new Superintendent when he arrives. Our Circuit Administrator, Sue Moore, continues in her role which entails a variety of tasks including producing the Circuit Preaching Plan, and organising Circuit Meetings in her role as Circuit Meeting Secretary. ## NEW APPOINTMENTS We were joined by Mick Goodman and Nick Drury as Circuit Stewards joining Paul Abel and Karen Armstrong our Circuit Treasurer. ## MISSION AND OUTREACH This section includes different mission activities happening in the Circuit, and some examples of specific mission in individual churches. We continued to run and support Foodbanks at Crowland, Dogsthorpe and Oundle. The number of users continued to be very high, so we are thankful to all concerned for their commitment to feed and support the many hungry and poor individuals and families in our communities. Church members at Southside Methodist Church continued to support the guests that resided in the homeless pod in their church car park. Some church members are part of the Light Project Peterborough Steering Group (‘Peterborough Christians for Social Action’), which is an ecumenical group, attending meetings, contributing to local needs, and improving the lives of local residents. Some are volunteers for the “The Garden 3 House”, which is a drop-in day centre for the project. Individual churches raised money for particular charities in need of support, including the Methodist Homes Association (MHA). We are grateful for the local support given to our local MHA home in the Ortons. ## MISSION ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS IN OUR CHURCHES A wide range of regular groups met in our churches: **Orton Waterville** continued to be a hive of activity. ‘Orton Friends’ (drop-in for the retired) continued to grow, meeting on Monday afternoons, enjoying chat, refreshments, games and challenges. Orton Waterville is an active member of Churches Together in the Ortons and a regular supplier to Peterborough Foodbank. They continue to enjoy close fellowship with the Maples. At **Brookside** their morning worship includes a range of styles of worship, including café worship, All Age services and own arrangements led by church groups. A mid-week Communion service is held monthly, and they have Tuesday Fellowship twice a month. Two Bible study groups meet. There is a PE4 partnership group with other churches in the area. Those who are unable to attend church are offered visits by Pastoral Assistants and home Communion if they would like it. Church groups include Craft and Chat, Men's group, Ladies’ group, and wellbeing coffee morning. Young People are served by Boys’ Brigade, Guides, Brownies and Rainbows, as well as Little Brookies and Cake Angels. The warm space community hub continues to flourish. At **Oundle** Sunday worship is on the first and third Sundays and they continue with their “Gatherings” (times of fellowship, teaching and prayer) on the first and third Wednesdays, with ministers/ local preachers invited to give reflections on a rota basis. The Food Bank continue to operate from Oundle Methodist on Thursday mornings. At **Crowland** various social events are held, including Explorers; Toddlers group; Saturday morning coffee sessions; Small fellowship / study groups: Wesley`s Wayfarers; Stepping Stones (A study group for young people). Their ‘Who Let the Dads Out’ project continues to be a great success. They continue to have a good relationship and monthly joint services with Crowland Abbey in the neighbouring Anglican parish and via its thriving MAP (Methodists and Anglicans in Partnership). At **Westgate New Church** they continue to alternate on the Preaching plan with having their own arrangement café-style service, and then a service led by a minister or local preacher on the alternate week. Conversations regarding future pastoral oversight of Westgate and Whittlesey LEPs continue. At **Southside** ‘Footsteps’ is a group for pre-school children (mostly up to 3 years). Mums and Dads are welcome at this group, which allows them the opportunity to socialise over refreshments whilst their children play, and there is some Christian input in little films and songs. At **Whittlesey** The church magazine – ‘Fresh Horizons’ - started during Lockdown as a means to maintain contact with the church family, and which is still going strong. The community winter film 4 showings with refreshments continue to be popular, as the town has no cinema. Whittlesey are excited about how the Spirit is working in their church and how busy the buildings are, being a home to a few weekly groups supporting vulnerable adults and a twice yearly Holiday at Home event. Thanks go to all those who volunteer and serve the church and do the Lord’s work. In the summer, during their FoG (Friends of God) sessions, they explored themes of discipleship and God's all-encompassing welcome. We also had a very well attended community barbecue fundraiser in August as well as our December community carol service. The church also hosted the Cambridgeshire Regiment Association memorial service in September. **Yarwell** Our Methodist ministers and Local Preachers continue to lead the afternoon service once a month for our Methodist members that attend St Mary Magdalene Church. We are grateful to Revd Jane Tailby for her continued support. **Dogsthorpe** Following much deliberation and prayer, the church council of Dogsthorpe Methodist Church voted unanimously, and with sadness, to ask permission to Cease to Meet. This means that the church will no longer exist, and the members will discern individually where the Lord is calling them to live out their discipleship. The trusteeship for the future of the building will be placed with the Circuit. The Circuit Meeting went on to agree with this decision, and permission is sought from the Northampton District Synod which will meet in September 2025. **At Christ Church** , We continue to hold regular Messy Churches with one per holiday, and have been delighted that we are continuing to see the same families returning. We also have Coffee Connect on the second and fourth Friday afternoons of the month, which especially provides a way for older people to come together. We are thrilled to report that numbers have increased over the last four years, and excitingly seem also to be higher than in the year or two before the pandemic. We continue to enjoy our engagement with and building relationships within and across the Circuit; and are especially happy to welcome the circuit to a Sunday morning service with us. At **Yaxley** their bi-monthly coffee mornings are well attended by village people; there are usually thirty to forty people there, including helpers, with a good mix of ages. It is a lovely atmosphere. The Busy Bees baby support group started in 2021. **Elton** The last Service of Worship in Elton Methodist Chapel took place on the afternoon of Sunday 8[th] September 2024. The Chapel was full, with a congregation of people from around the Peterborough Methodist Circuit. The sermon, preached by Revd Janet Titterton at this service, was most appropriate and well received. The building ceased to be used from that date onwards. The Bank Account of Elton Methodist Chapel was formally closed on 21[st] November 2024, and the assets transferred into the Account of the Peterborough Methodist Circuit. ## CHURCHES TOGETHER Members of the Circuit attended the many events organised by Churches Together in Central Peterborough (CTiCP) throughout the year. ## LOCAL PREACHERS AND WORSHIP We rejoice that we now have two Local Preachers “On Trial"; The circuit appreciates the work of our secretary Nigel Lightfoot who continues as Local preachers’ meeting Secretary. 5 It is noted that the list of active preachers on the Plan is not as great as it once was. To address this, we seek to hold afternoon services in some churches. Regular Circuit Services were held at Brookside and Christ Church. Investigation is underway regarding Lay Presidency and as a circuit we are seeking dispensations from the Methodist Conference as we have good reason to claim eucharistic depravation due to becoming a single minister circuit. ## STAFFING AND APPOINTMENTS At the end of August Sue Keeney and Sue Holmes retired. Mick Goodman and Nick Drury joined Paul Abel and our Circuit Treasurer Karen Armstrong to form the Circuit Stewards Team. Suzanne Delegate continued in her role as Back of Beyond (BoB) Project Co-ordinator for Westgate New Church, which helps anyone in need. This group continues to grow and is by far one of the most successful groups she has coordinated. Suzanne Delegate continued in her role as Lay Pastoral Assistant. ## SAFEGUARDING AND GDPR David Whiting continued as our Circuit Safeguarding Officer. Thanks go to all the Safeguarding Team for their diligence. A Circuit-wide record of DBS checks was compiled by our Circuit Safeguarding Officer, confirming all our DBS and Safeguarding training was up to date. The Circuit Safeguarding Policy for 2025 was amended and updated and agreed at our March Circuit Meeting. The Circuit continues to abide by the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations) All the churches are up to date and compliant with the District GDPR requirements. ## FINANCE The accounts for the year ended 31st August 2025 were independently verified and approved. The updated Reserves Policy was agreed in January 2025. Income for the year was £304,116. The expenditure for the year was £240,744. Our reserves increased by £63,372. The increased income and reserves were largely due to the sale of Ailsworth Chapel, resulting in income of £105,000. Without this, we would have made an in-year loss of £42,000. We continue to be grateful for the share contributions made by all the churches, some of whom have managed to increase their giving this year. We continue to achieve regular income from the letting of a manse, and have received a grant of £8,000 towards the costs of a lay worker. We have made grant payments of £700 during the year in respect of an Elton Community Fund. ## PROPERTY Ailsworth chapel has now been sold, whilst Elton chapel is currently for sale. ## **In conclusion** 6 Despite this year’s challenges, we are pleased to welcome a new Superintendent and look forward to working with him. We appreciate those who contributed to this change and look forward to embracing new ministry approaches.
