Borashabaa received £10,000.00 from Big Lottery to run a long-term project (Stop Loneliness Together) The main focus for the activities was for Vulnerable and excluded people such as black minorities, refugees and asylum seekers in Hull. Borashabaa had a community outreach team of volunteers. These volunteers report on issues they come across bringing in their perspective of loneliness, isolated and housebound. Borashabaa then held workshops and group sessions to hone down ideas, collecting suggestions of ways to tackle these issues. The project was designed with the collected information and had eight people steering the group to lead, design, development and delivery of the activity. Borashabaa than facilitated six discussions round table talk about their culture, experience of life in Hull aspirations and what they have contributed to the community. While these discussions were happening we were also delivering food to these families during the pandemic to help these families during the tough times. We feel this project was beneficial to the community because it allowed us to bring people who lack confidence and hindered by language barriers together at a time were the world was in desperate need of support.

In 2021 Borashabaa was granted £20,000.00 by Hull Community Foundations. With is grant Borashabaa’s provided 4 hours per week for 5 volunteers to help group learn to fill application forms and 6 hours freelance trainer Three times a year and employed 1 part time funding officer. With this Borashabaa provided great support to BAME organisation the provision of micro grants, support with monitoring and reporting. The grant also helped the small B.A.M.E community groups on training to learn how funding application forms are assessed and evaluated. We supported 5 B.A.M.E small community groups that operate in Yorkshire, which are: Congolese Women Group, Babondo Women Group, Women Force Vision, Solidarity Hull, Buguma Bafuliru and Bavira, Somalia, and Soudan’s groups. These groups struggled to access some local funds and other funds from community foundations because of lack of capacity buildings, lack of knowledge to fill funding application, and it also hard to access the local funding because of lack of awareness about the funding, also the procedure and the construction of the application form itself makes hard for these BAMA small organizations to be successful, lack of feedback and lack of knowledge on how the local funding is assessed.

Borashabaa received £14,423 from two different application grants from BSA (Ideas fund) which allowed the charity to run free ESOL and cultural sewing classes which are still going on in 2023. This is beneficial for the community because it provides warm spaces on a weekly basis, this allows the refugees and asylum seekers boost their English with confidence in an environment where they are comfortable and with people from similar situations. The sewing classes allowed the people to bring their creativity and skills while also teaching others about their cultures and backgrounds. This project was and still is a partnership with Hull University.
