The Orchestra had eight public engagements
during the period: five orchestral concerts and
three choral concerts. The choral concerts have
contributed to the financial stability of the
orchestra, directly by donation, but also by
widening our base of supporters and network of
artists and musicians. The orchestra also
reached a larger audience by performing at a
central London venue with larger capacity.|||

well attended and members commented on the level
of detail achieved in the performance.
12thFebruary 2024: The orchestra was hired by
Eclectic Voices choir and conductor Scott Stroman to
perform at St Gile’s Cripplegate: Mozart’s Mass in C.
The concert was run by the choir including its
finances, and the orchestra paid for one rehearsal
only; the concert was purely for the education and
enjoyment of music making for its members; there
were no subs nor fees payable. Before the
performance, there was an introduction with concert
pianist and educator David Dolan at the piano
performing with his students from the Guildhall School
of Music and Drama on classical period improvisation
practices, followed by a spoken introduction to the
Mass by Robert Levin.
26thMarch 2024: members of the orchestra’s string
section were hired for a donation by City Chamber
Choir to collaborate on a concert held at St Sepulcre’s
Church, High Holborn. The programme included J.S.
Bach’s_Brandenburg 3_performed without a conductor.
The members enjoyed the challenge of playing as a
small chamber music ensemble.
4thMay 2024: The orchestra performed a hugely
successful concert at St Johns, Smith Square
Westminster with conductor Dominic Grier:
Rachmaninoff Paganini Variations including concert
pianist Juan Carlos Fernandez-Nieto, and Mahler’s 5th
Symphony to a sell-out audience of c300. £500
sponsorship was given for advertisement in the
programme, and future concerts for the year were
advertised to the larger audience base. The members
of the orchestra enjoyed the opportunity of a larger
musical programme, including the need for additional
players and friends of the orchestra to join.
22ndJune: The orchestra performed at their regular
venue St Peter’s Church Notting Hill with conductor
Bertie Baigent and soloist Hugh Wolley: a programme
including Debussy, Ravel, Mozart’s Bassoon
Concerto and Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony No. 3.
21stSeptember: The orchestra performed at their
regular venue St Peter’s Church Notting Hill with|

conductor Otis Lineham and soloist Hannah Perowne: a programme including De Falla, Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto no. 1 and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8 Both June and September concerts were well attended and highlighted the orchestra’s versatility and commitment to performing a diverse range of repertoire and supporting emerging conductors. 23[rd] November 2024: The orchestra was hired for a donation for the first time by Waltham Singers to perform at Chelmsford Cathedral. It was a very successful collaboration with positive feedback from the choir on the standard of playing in the orchestra. The orchestra was hired again in 2025 and hopes this becomes a regular fixture for the calendar. 7[th] December 2024: The orchestra performed at their regular venue St Peter’s Church Notting Hill with conductor Johann Stuckenbruck and soloist Bar Zemach: Strauss’ _Horn Concerto No. 2_ and Tchaikovsky’s _Symphony No. 6:_ a rich and romantic programme to end the year. The highlight of the concert was the encore from the soloist: Zemach played the Shofar to a stunned silence from the audience; a very memorable evening.
## **Financial Review**

Review of the charity’s Para 1.21 The financial year resulted in a profit of £9.5k (£4.4k
financial position at the end ’23). Excluding the choral concerts, the orchestral
of the period concerts made a profit of £5.5k. Excluding Gift Aid
and funds from Orchestral Tax Relief through the
company production accounts, the charity still made
a profit of £1.6k (£0.6k ‘23). The average attendance
to concerts in our usual venue of St Peter’s Notting
Hill was 70 full price ticket equivalents.
Statement explaining the Para 1.22 The charity has over the last few years, coming out
policy for holding reserves of the COVID pandemic, pushed to try and increase
stating why they are held reserves through fees payable from choirs, gift aid
and Orchestral Tax Relief as well as increasing
audience members. All reserves are put back into the
charity towards the future of maintaining and
improving the standard of public concerts that the
orchestra is able to perform. The charity aims to do
this by increasing fees payable to conductors and
soloists, continuing to perform at a central London
venue once a year, and performing varied and
interesting programmes for its players / members
which can involve higher music hire fees for parts
that are still in copyright and therefore more
expensive. The reserves are currently held at a
minimum of the full cost of the next concert, with the
aim of increasing this to the next 6 months over the
coming few years.

uncertainties about the
charity continuing as a going
concern|Para 1.23|After reviewing the expected income and level of
recurring and anticipated expenditure for the next
financial year, the level of reserves available, and the
future plans of the Charity, the Trustees consider that
there are no material uncertainties regarding the
Charity’s ability to continue as a going concern.
It is vital that the charity continues to engage choirs
for concerts to fund losses made from orchestral
concerts, and also for the production company
Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra Limited to
submit orchestral tax relief claims. The orchestra
maintains low subs for its members at £35 per
concert and has not increased this, but may look at
doing so soon if audience attendance cannot be
maintained.|

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity for the year ended 31 December 2024.
## _**Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**_
As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the 2011 Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## _**Independent examiner’s statement**_
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
- accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
- the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
- the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
This report is made solely to the Charity’s Trustees, as a body, in accordance with Part 4 of the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008. My work has been undertaken so that I might state to the Charity’s Trustees those matters I am required to state to them in an Independent Examiner’s Report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, I do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the Charity and the Charity’s Trustees as a body, for my work or for this report.

## **1. Accounting policies**
## **1.1 Basis of preparation of financial statements**
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019), the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) and the Charities Act 2011.
Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra meets the definition of a public benefit entity under FRS 102. Assets and liabilities are initially recognised at historical cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant accounting policy.
The financial statements are prepared in Sterling, the functional currency of the Charity. Monetary amounts in these financial statements are rounded to the nearest £.
## **1.2 General information**
Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra is a Charity registered with the Charity Commission in England & Wales under charity number 1135544. The principal address and objects of the Charity are set out on pages 1 and 2 respectively.
## **1.3 Going concern**
After reviewing the expected income and the level of recurring and anticipated expenditure for the next financial year, the level of reserves available, and the future plans of the Charity, the Trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties regarding the Charity's ability to continue as a going concern.
## **1.4 Fund accounting**
General funds are unrestricted funds which are available for use at the discretion of the Trustees in furtherance of the general objective of the Charity and which have not been designated for other purposes
Restricted funds are funds which are to be used in accordance with specific restrictions imposed by donors or which have been raised by the Charity for particular purposes. The aim and use of each restricted fund is set out in the notes to the financial statements.

## **1. Accounting policies (continued)**
## **1.5 Income**
Incoming resources are recorded in the Statement of Financial Activities when the charity becomes entitled to the resources, is probable it will receive the resources, and the monetary value can be measured reliably.
Grants and donations are only included in the Statement of Financial Activities when the charity has unconditional entitlement to the resources. Donations with no performance conditions are recognised on receipt.
Subscription income is recognised on an accruals basis in the period to which it relates.
Income tax recoverable in relation to donations received under Gift Aid is recognised at the time of donation.
Income from ticket sales, refreshments and programme sales, and orchestra hire is recognised in the at the time the concert takes place.
## **1.6 Expenditure**
Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to transfer economic benefit to a third party, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure directly relating to a performance is recognised in the period in which the performance takes place.
Expenditure on charitable activities is incurred on directly undertaking the activities which further the Charity's objectives, as well as any associated support costs.
All expenditure is inclusive of irrecoverable VAT.
## **1.7 Debtors**
Trade and other debtors are recognised at the settlement amount after any trade discount offered. Prepayments are valued at the amount prepaid net of any trade discounts due.

## **1.8 Cash at bank and in hand**
Cash at bank and in hand includes cash and short-term highly liquid investment with a short maturity of three months or less from the date of acquisition or opening of the deposit or similar account.
## **1.9 Liabilities and provisions**
Liabilities are recognised when there is an obligation at the Balance Sheet date as a result of a past event, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefit will be required in settlement, and the amount of the settlement can be estimated reliably.
Liabilities are recognised at the amount that the Charity anticipates it will pay to settle the debt or the amount it has received advanced payments for the goods or services it must provide.
Provisions are measured at the best estimate of the amounts required to settle the obligation. Where the effect of the time value of money is material, the provision is based on the present value of those amounts, discounted at the pre-tax discount rate that reflects the risks specific to the liability. The unwinding of the discount is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities as a finance cost.
## **1.10 Financial instruments**
The Charity only has financial assets and financial liabilities of a kind that qualify as basic financial instruments. Basic financial instruments are initially recognised at transaction value and subsequently measured at their settlement value with the exception of bank loans which are subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method.
## **2. Critical accounting estimates and areas of judgement**
Estimates and judgements are continually evaluated and are based on historical experience and other factors, including expectations of future events that are believed to be reasonable under the circumstances.
The Charity makes estimates and assumptions concerning the future. The resulting accounting estimates and assumptions will, by definition, seldom equal the related actual results. The Trustees do not consider that there are any sources of estimation uncertainty at the reporting date that have a significant risk of causing a material adjustment to the carrying amounts of assets and liabilities within the next reporting period.

## **11. Related party transactions**
Trustees paid membership fees to the Charity in the year totalling £255 (2023: £435).
No trustee expenses were incurred in the year (2023: £Nil).
During the year, a fee of £13,262 (2023: £7,870) was paid to Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra Limited, a connected company, for the production and running of the concert series for the year. At the year end a balance of £8,955 (2023: £2,168) was due from the company.
