Governance and management

The charity is operated under the rules of its constitution adopted 25 January 2009.

We do not have a written process of appointing Trustees, 3 of the 4 Trustees are founder Trustees. On the two occasions Trustees have resigned, we have approached long-term volunteers for interest in the position, these then get nominated and voted at our Trustee meetings.

Objectives and activities

For the benefit of the public to relieve the suffering and distress of animals in need of care and attention by reason of sickness, neglect or mistreatment and in particular to provide and maintain rescue homes or other facilities for the reception, care and treatment of such animals, to educate the public on matters concerning animal welfare.

Public benefit statement

The Trustees confirm that they have complied with the duty in section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit, 'Charities and Public Benefit'.

Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit

From the public we admit into our care, pets and farm animals that are unwanted, surrendered, neglected, stray and abandoned pets.

These animals are fully assessed, treated and then we seek life-long homes with the public as pets, ensuring that any adoptee has suitable facilities and knowledge for the welfare of the animal(s), we offer advice and support to the public on the overall wellbeing, needs, treatment and overall welfare.

2

Brinsley Animal Rescue

Animals are fully health assessed and treated, this includes where appropriate, neutering, worming, vaccinations and any other treatment necessary for their health and welfare, to ensure the animals are assessed and find suitable homes.

From the public we admit wildlife that is orphaned, sick or injured. These animals are assessed, treated, rehabilitated and where possible released back into the wild. Where we cannot release wildlife, euthanasia is often the course of action to prevent suffering, in line with our Euthanasia Policy.

Education

We provide mentoring opportunities to the public in the care, treatment and rehabilitation of animals, by;

We provide information and experienced advice to educate the public regarding matters of animal welfare;

We manage several thousand requests each year requiring help, advice or assistance from the public regarding pets and wild animals. Where appropriate we signpost the public to other organisations as well liaise directly with other organisations. We facilitate limited educational visits by local groups such as Cubs, Scouts, and Young Farmers.

We provide educational talks at local schools and to local groups.

We provide and facilitate training to our volunteers and other local animal rescue organisations.

Brinsley Animal Rescue

During the reporting year, the charity had to turn away 1,541 pets due to a lack of resources. The Trustees make day-to-day judgements regarding when to admit an animal, so as not to put pressure on the charity, often we sadly have to turn away unwanted, abandoned and neglected pets due to a lack of space, funds or volunteers time.

Financial review

The Trustees effectively manage the charities expenditure, considering the charities operating expenditure, reserves and income. Commitments are effectively managed so as not to put the charity or any animal in our care at risk, to ensure we have sufficient funds to cover our known costs with sufficient contingency for unplanned expenditure. Commitments are managed by the careful consideration of animal intake, our “controllable cost”, sadly as many animals we are asked to admit require expensive veterinary treatment, we must decline much additional intake, in line with our available financial resource. In 2024 the charity had to decline the admission of 1,541 pets due to a lack of funds.

The charity’s policy on reserves

In accordance with our Finance Policy, we maintain a minimum of £10,000 in reserve.

Additional information

The charity has an exceptional reputation with the public and other organisations, from which the charity receives a huge amount of support both financial and by volunteering. The Trustees have worked hard to grow this support base over many years; we now have tens of thousands of followers on social media. The Charity is often signposted to from other organisations and receives substantial media following on all media formats including TV and radio.

The public exposure aids the organisations objectives, by promoting education, regular public donations, which form a major part of our funding and attracting volunteering support, essential to our success.
