## **Brinsley Animal Rescue Trustees’ annual report for the year ended 31 December 2023**

**Full name** Brinsley Animal Rescue

## **Registered charity number** 1135508

**Principal address** 69 Hobsic Close, Brinsley, Nottingham, NG16 5AX

## **Trustees**

Jonathan Beresford, Chair Bethan Mair Hewis, Treasurer David Aren Oyamo Otieno, Secretary Amanda Richardson

## **Independent examiner**

John O’Brien, employee of Community Accounting Plus, Units 1 & 2 North West, 41 Talbot Street, Nottingham, NG1 5GL

## **Governance and management**

The charity is operated under the rules of its constitution adopted 25 January 2009.

We do not have a written process of appointing Trustees, 3 of the 4 Trustees are founder Trustees. On the two occasions Trustees have resigned, we have approached long-term volunteers for interest in the position, these then get nominated and voted at our Trustee meetings.

## **Objectives and activities**

For the benefit of the public to relieve the suffering and distress of animals in need of care and attention by reason of sickness, neglect or mistreatment and in particular to provide and maintain rescue homes or other facilities for the reception, care and treatment of such animals, to educate the public on matters concerning animal welfare.

## **Public benefit statement**

The Trustees confirm that they have complied with the duty in section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit, 'Charities and Public Benefit'.

## **Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit**

We provide experienced voluntary service to the public for the rescuing of pets, wild animals and farm animals.

Pets and Farm Animals - We admit unwanted, neglected, stray and abandoned pets and farm animals into our care. These animals are assessed, treated and then we seek life-long homes with the public as pets, ensuring that any adoptee has suitable facilities and knowledge for the welfare of the animal(s).

2

## **Brinsley Animal Rescue**

All animals are fully health assessed and treated, this includes where appropriate neutering, worming, vaccinations and any other treatment necessary for their welfare, to ensure they find suitable homes and to prevent breeding.

When persons consider the adoption of pets or farm animals from us, we provide advice on their housing, keeping, treatment and overall welfare.

We benefit the public by admitting surrounded pets, often as a result of unplanned events, from a change of circumstances to unplanned litter of pets.

Wildlife – From the public we admit orphaned, sick and injured wildlife. These are assessed, treated, rehabilitated and where possible released back into the wild. Where we cannot release wildlife, euthanise is often the course of action to prevent suffering, in line with our Euthanasia Policy.

Education - We provide support, guidance and help to inform and educate the public regarding all matters of animal welfare, we do this through multiple channels.

- Through the pet and farm animal adoption process.

- We handle around 7,000 telephone calls a year, where we provide advice and assistance. Where we are not able to admit, we signpost the caller as well as liaise directly with other organisations.

- We facilitate practical training for the public through work experience for school pupils or further students in further education as well as supporting DoE.

- We facilitate limited visits of groups such as cubs, scouts and other groups.

- We provide educational talks at local schools.

- We facilitate and provide educational training for our volunteers as well as volunteers of other rescue organisations.

## **The charity’s policy on reserves**

We maintain a minimum of £10,000 in reserves.

During the reporting year, the charity had to turn away 1,896 pets due to a lack of resources. The Trustees make day-to-day judgements regarding when to admit an animal, so as not to put pressure on the charity, often we sadly have to turn away unwanted, abandoned and neglected pets due to a lack of space, funds or volunteers time.

## **3. Funds analysis**

The specific purposes for which the funds are to be applied are as follows:

Aviaries - funded by The Belforte Foundation – towards the purchase and construction of two large steel aviaries, complete with a concrete base. The new aviaries will be used to treat approximately 50 wild birds a year, predominantly birds of prey. The aviaries will allow us to increase their chances of a full recovery and better prepare them for the wild.
