STJOHN’S NOTTING HILL RESTORATION FUND
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
|
For the year ended 31 December 2025
This year marked a series of significant achievements fn the church’s ongoing conservation programme, continulng the steady progress over the last few years.
Significant progress was made !n preparation for future Interlor enhancements, In July 2025, 4 new paint Investigation was undertaken by Cliveden Conservation Workshap under the leadership of specialist conservator Ana Logrelra, Building on the earlier study by Hare and Humphries In 2014, this Investigation revealed and beautifully restored original hand-palnted decorations on an entire one-bay section of the South Alsle timber ceiling.
Following last year’s exciting discovery of the former lettering on the nave celllng—the first four verses from Psalm 150—the latest investigation extended to the nave ceillng above the gallery space, It uncovered far more histerte decoration than anticlpated, Identifying at least three separate decorative schemes beneath the fourth, believed to data from 1955, which had concealed all earller hand-palnted decorations, Further tnvestigations on the Chancel Ceiling, South Transept Celling, and Chancel Arch also confirmed the presence of numerous hand-painted dasigns throughout these areas, underscoring the building’s rich artistic heritage.
These findings have become a turning point In the design development of a new internal decoration scheme. The next phase of this project will focus on the complete restoration of the south and north alste ceilings, along with possible further investigations and restoration of an entire one-bay section in the nave and the chancel. A DAC application for this work was submitted on 23 December 2025, and the project Is expected to commence on site In March 2026,
s the Restoration Fund Trustees, we have been delighted to suppart St John’s during 2025 and look forward 9 our continued Involvement during the coming year.
