Advancernent of Religion and any Gharilable purpose ofthe Melhodist

The purposes of the Methodist Church are and shall be de6med to have
been since the date of the Deed of Union the advancement of..
a) The Christian faith in arKordance wilh the doctrinal standards and
discipline of the Methodist Church, and
b) Any Charitab￿ purposes for the time being of any Connexional.
Dislrict. Circuit, local or other organisation of the Melhodist Church, and
c) Any Charitab￿ purpose for the time being of any society or institution
subsidiary or ancillary to the Methodist Church, and
d) Any purpose for the lime being of any oharity being a charity
subsidiary or ancillary of the Methodisl Church.

The Circuit produces a quarterly preaching plan to ensure regular acts of
worship lake place at each of our nine {eighl churches with the closure of
East Boldon from April 2025) Methodist Churches. These are open to all
people without charge
Through donations. collections and fund-raising activities the local
churches support many other local and national charities in their work.
The Trustees have had regard to the guidan￿ by the Charity
Commissioner on public benefit.

Summary ofth8 main
achievements of the charity
during the year
The Cir&+ail continues to oversee the delivery of the objectives of the
charity as set out in the governing documenis.
In addition lo the provision of regular acts of worship, most of Ihe eight
churches are engaged in some way with children's andlor families, work
in their comtnunities (examples being uniformed groups, assemblies,
Messy Church, toddlers groups). All of the churches host events (like
coffee momings, lunch groups. knit and natter groups, Holiday at Home)
for older peopl& that address issues of loneliness, and social isolation.
One of the churches. having been a warm space, is developing a role as
a community hub.
The Circuit continues to develop its partnership with Sunderland SAMBA
team, with one of the Circuit ministers being chaplain to the team and the
harity as a whole.
Restructuring following the covid pandemic is nearly coM￿ete, wilh most
of surplus buildings having been sold. This income all¢)WS the Circuit to
fund necessary paid administrative roles,. and a new post developing our
work with children and families.

Financial review
The Reserves Policy for the Sunderland Circuit is to hold a sum
equivaleDt to 6 months average expenditure plus funds designated to
cover the costs of the three lay workers posts for the next 5 years
(£350,000}. an amount for exceptional property maintenance (£75,000}
and includes a bequest (£10,000) which is designated for lay training or
work with young people.

Responsibilities and basls of report
I report to the trustees on my exambination of the accoints of the Sunderland Circuit for the year ended 31
August. As the Circuit's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accountds in accordance
with the requirements of the Charities Act 20111'the Act'l.
I report in respect of my examination of the Circuit's accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and,
in carrying out rny examinatlgn, I have followed all the applicable directors fiven by the Charity Commission
under section 145151{bl of the Act.
Independent Examiner's Statement
I have completed my examination. I can confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in
connection with the examination which give me cause to believe that in, any material respect..
the accounting records where not kept lun accordance with section 130 of the Act,. or
the accounts do not accord wiht the accounting record5: or
the account do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of
accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement
that the accounts give a 'true and fair. view, which is not a matter considered as part of an independent
examination

I have no concern5 and have come across no other matters in conncetion with the examination to which
attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be

I have not obtained independent verification of all investments with the Trustees for Methodist Church
Purposes or held in other trusts, bank balances and funds at the centrl Finance Board of the Methodist
Church which are individually in excess of £IO.IXIO (ten thousand pounds) at the balance sheet date.
