## **Aims and purposes**

Holy Trinity PCC works in co-operation with the Incumbent in promoting the pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical mission of the Church. The Reverend Dominic Fenton took up his post as Priest-inCharge in 2016, was made Rector in 2018 and has been fully engaged with the aims and objectives of

the Parish throughout 2020. An Assistant Curate, the Reverend Doctor Jennifer Walters, joined us in June 2020 and was ordained Deacon in Canterbury Cathedral in July.

## **Structure, governance and management**

The method of appointment of PCC members is set out in the Church Representation Rules. At Holy Trinity the PCC consists of the Incumbent, the two Churchwardens, three Deanery Synod members and members elected by those of the congregation who are on the electoral roll of the Church. Members are elected for three years. The PCC meets a minimum of six times a year.

There are 153 members on the Church Electoral Roll. The average Sunday attendance before the pandemic was 100 (including those under 16). After the first lockdown we began with small congregations which gradually increased week by week until they were almost back to normal, until the second lockdown once again stopped services.

## **Objectives and Activities**

The PCC is committed to building on the pattern of Sunday worship already established, and to developing new ideas for special services.

We aim to be an inclusive and welcoming community and to enable ordinary people to discover and live out the Christian faith through:

- Sacramental worship and prayer, learning about the Gospel and developing trust in Jesus Christ.

- Provision of pastoral care for members of the congregation and for all those living or working in the parish.

- Missionary and outreach work.

We are committed to maintaining and preserving our historic buildings and in 2020 a faculty was approved for the provision of oil filled candles to illuminate the choir stalls. This work was completed in time for Easter 2020 but unfortunately were unable to be used due to the Covid-19 pandemic. They have, however been used on many occasions since. These were paid for wholly by subscription from parishioners, including discreet memorial plaques.

Holy Trinity fully complies with the requirements of the Church of England with respect to good safeguarding practice. All persons who have been identified as needing training have attended courses run by the Diocese and this is continually monitored by our safeguarding officer.

## **Achievements and Performance**

Although the PCC is committed to enabling the Church to be open as often as possible, and to welcoming local people and visitors to share in worship both on Sundays and during the week, this has not been possible through 2020. Whenever government regulations permitted the church was open for private prayer followed by restricted Wednesday and Friday Mass, with a said Eucharist on Sunday mornings. The church was made Covid compliant with social distancing measures, hand sanitizer stations and facemask requirements put in place. A ‘fogging’ machine was also purchased to sanitise the building between services. This can also be used in the hall when lettings recommence.

There is an office which is open in the mornings from Tuesday to Friday (Government Covid regulations permitting) and which is manned by a volunteer administrator. We have an answerphone and an e-mail address and both of these are checked regularly outside of office hours. During 2020 the website www.holytrinitybroadstairs.com was updated and was used to broadcast a Sunday podcast when the

church had to be closed. A coffee morning by Zoom was introduced on Wednesdays and the Rector and Assistant Curate used e-mail and the telephone extensively to keep in touch with the congregation.

In order to address our increasingly ‘cashless society’ we have obtained the means to accept payments by credit or debit card and are hopeful that this will help to increase donations from the wider community, especially at special services and events.

Our many groups were forced to stop meeting conventionally during 2020 and after a very successful evening with Kaffe Fassett in February our social and fund-raising events were halted.

For several years we rented out our hall to a nursery group every day in term time but unfortunately they were a victim of the pandemic and were forced to close permanently at Easter 2020. Other groups who met in the facility were also stopped but we are hopeful that most will resume when allowed in 2021.

After a dip in numbers and losing adult leaders, the Junior Church began to meet every other Sunday during term time. Once again, this was interrupted by the closure of the church during lockdown but contact has been maintained with Junior Church members and we are hopeful that things will resume properly in 2021.

Regular maintenance to church buildings had been carried out and a faculty for a new tea bar area was applied for. If this is granted work will start early in 2021. Whilst the hall was closed to groups a complete refurbishment of the floor and redecoration and was undertaken making the facility more attractive to renters.

## **Deanery Synod**

Three members of our PCC sit on the Deanery Synod - providing the PCC with an important link with the Diocese and the wider church.

## **Church Centre**

When permissible, our hall is open to our community and is used by various local activities including the Broadstairs Society, a local Art Group, Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Brownies, a dancing school and numerous parties and celebrations. It was, however, closed from March to December because of the pandemic.

## **Mission and Evangelism**

Our parish magazine is issued monthly keeping our parishioners informed of all the important activities of the church and articles on the Christian faith. The Rector or Assistant Curate produced a weekly pastoral letter after the pandemic closed the church and good use has been made of the website to keep in touch.

## **Ecumenical Relationships**

Holy Trinity is part of the Broadstairs Group of churches and a Group Council would usually meet quarterly, with the clergy meeting monthly.

We are members of the Churches Together in Broadstairs and St Peter’s.

## **Financial Review 2020.**

As expected our unrestricted income was badly affected by the Covid 19 Pandemic – Planned Giving dropping by 80.5% and the Plate Collections by 61.25%. Gift Aid giving was up just under 2%. We now have 36 members of the congregation donating directly by monthly standing order. Income tax recovery was slow and behind due to the Pandemic and staff isolating. Excluding legacies - we did receive some generous donations. Our general funds were very badly hit – and our fund rising was practically nonexisting – Saturday Shop only opened twice – there was no Christmas Fair, Folk Festival or Dickens Week or General Fund Raising. This is a very important part of our income and we rely heavily on our fund rising - overall it was down by 60.64%.

On the Expenditure side - we drew on our investments with CCLA to clear our balance on the Parish Share. £600 was drawn from our Restricted Funds to carry out memorial repairs. General running cost where higher due to the cost of Covid. There was an increase of 83.56% extra spent in our trading costs, most of it used for the refurbishing of the Church Hall.

At the end of the financial year we had a balance of £36,963 – including our restricted funds for general use and investments of £183,972 with CCLA.
