The Parochial Church Council (PCC) of the Ecclesiastical Parish of St Mary Magdalene, Sutton-in Ashfield (working name St Mary Magdalene’s PCC Sutton-inAshfield)

Registered Charity Number 1134798

Report for the Year Ended 31 December 2023

Introduction

The church is located on Church Avenue, Sutton-in-Ashfield and the address for correspondence is: The Magdalene Centre, Church Avenue, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, NG17 2EB. The PCC has the responsibility of co-operating with the incumbent in promoting in the ecclesiastical parish the whole mission of the church, pastoral, evangelical, social and ecumenical. It also has the responsibility for the maintenance of and responsibility for The Magdalene Centre, Church Avenue, Sutton-in-Ashfield. However, the day-to-day management of The Magdalene Centre is carried out by a separate committee with separate accounts.

Membership of the Parochial Church Council

Members of the PCC are either ex-officio or elected by the Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM) in accordance with the Church Representation Rules. New Rules were introduced in 2020. The number of elected members is governed by the number of people on the Electoral Roll and is currently 12. Each year 4 members are elected for a term of 3 years, after which they can stand for re-election. Where a member resigns, or otherwise fails to serve for their full term of office, the casual vacancy is filled for the remainder of the term of office. If the APCM is not due within the next 2 months following the occurrence of the vacancy, the vacancy is filled by the PCC.

Deanery Synod (DS) representatives are elected by the APCM every 3 years for a 3-year term and there is now a restriction in the number of terms a person can be re-elected to DS - 2 terms. Any casual vacancy is filled in the same way as for a PCC vacancy. DS representatives and any Diocesan Synod representatives are automatically members of the PCC.

All members of the PCC are automatically trustees of the registered charity.

The following people served on the PCC for the year ended 31 December 2023.

Proceedings of the PCC and Parish Church and Review of the Activities for the Year Ended 31 December 2023

The PCC met seven times in 2023.

Worship and Spirituality

Services were conducted in church throughout the year and, for most of the year, thanks to Andrew Halfpenny, they were also streamed on Zoom. There were a small number of ‘regulars’ who joined us on Zoom, with others from time to time. Eucharist was celebrated each Sunday, except for the third Sunday of the month when the service was either lay led Matins (Book of Common Prayer) or Morning Worship (Common Worship). Thank you to Tim, Andrew and Barbara for acting as Deacons. We also acknowledge with thanks the Readers (LLM’s) from other parishes and clergy who helped with the “Occasional Offices”.

The Worship4All (W4All) Services were held weekly in the Magdalene Centre, except for the third Sunday of the month which was with Eucharist in church at 11.15 a.m.

On occasion, often for festivals, the two congregations joined together for a Eucharist service.

Thursday morning Eucharist services took place weekly with occasional morning prayer.

We offer different styles of worship for all ages: Little Miracles under 5’s worship meetings weekly, Generate youth worship is twice a month, Overflow is every other month alongside All Saints Church and New Cross Community Church.

Lent and Advent courses were held this year, as was “The Bible Course”.

Food and Clothing Banks

Mary’s Foodbank has been operating from The Magdalene Centre every Friday 09.30 a.m. till 12.30 p.m. by appointment.

During 2023 we fed a total of 4,415 people which consists of 2,737 and 1,678 children and given out a total of 2,591 bags which consists of 1,508 single bags and 1,083 family bags.

The clothing bank closed early 2023 due to relocating to The Magdalene Centre as we did not have room to store clothing.

Clients are referred to us by Job Centre, Ashfield District Council, Framework, Change Grow and Live, Family Services, Local Schools and Churches and Support Workers.

There is an open invitation for anyone who wishes to come and see how we operate.

All at Mary’s foodbank would like to thank you all for your support during 2023.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding practice is a key and vital role within the church and there are clear regulations in place to ensure that each parish is compliant with the protocol and practice.

Safeguarding continues to be a set agenda item at all PCC meetings and updates have been provided. The PCC’s safeguarding policy is reviewed annually by the PCC.

Gemma Finch and Pam Morris are happy to continue representing St Mary Magdalene Church as safeguarding for children and vulnerable adults.

No new incidents were reported that led to the involvement of the Diocesan Safeguarding Team. Advice was sought on three occasions but no action was needed. One incident continues to be monitored.

Safeguarding meetings and training are mainly still held by zoom but some are now being done face to face.

Pam attended Jubilee House and successfully passed the leadership course.

A letter has been given to volunteers as well as others as it is now mandatory for safeguarding training to be done, a copy is below:

“Thank you for your continued support as a volunteer.

It is now a mandatory requirement for all volunteers to complete safeguarding training which can be accessed via the below link.

Safeguardingtraining.cofeportal.org

Click on online courses. Both basic awareness and the foundation level needs to be completed. Should you require help then please talk to Rev Julie or myself and we will try and get you logged on in the Magdalene Centre office to complete. The basic level needs to be completed by the end of January and level two as soon as afterwards please.”

Upon completion please forward a copy of your certificate to pam.morris1955@gmail.com.

This is also a requirement for anyone wishing to stand on the PCC.

Domestic abuse awareness is also required by some leaders.

The PCC’s safeguarding policy is reviewed annually by the PCC.

Financial Position and Reserves Policy

These are set out in the Accounts for the year. The PCC is concerned that the finances are still not, at present, sufficient to pay the Parish Share in full.

Fundraising for Church Funds

The main fundraising events this year were a plant sale, Coronation celebration and a Christmas Fayre, alongside a Christmas tree festival in church. We are grateful to Kitty Clifford, John Simpson and their teams for organising these.

Pastoral Care

The pastoral care groups set up in 2020, at the start of the first Covid-19 lockdown, no longer continued formally but some of the group co-ordinators kept in touch with church members, particularly those who were no longer able to attend church. Holy Communion was taken to one housebound church member on a regular basis and to others as and when needed.

This year we held the Christmas Memorial Service for bereaved families, which was again well received.

Children and Families

Since April 2023, St. Mary’s has had a funded Children and Families worker.

A new service for under 5s and their parents/carers, Little Miracles, was set up in April 2023 on a Tuesday morning and was proving to be very popular with a regular attendance of around 30 children. We have seen as many as 40 children. This service consisted of play, bible stories, prayer, snack and worship. Our upbeat worship songs were extremely popular and engaged both the children and their adults in worship. We have received some great feedback from parents and carers that children were asking more about the Bible stories and to play the songs we sang. As we ran through the school holidays, we also saw older children joining in. We have seen some of our families and adults from Little Miracles attending both the 10.00 am and 11.15 am Sunday services, as well as baptism families.

St Mary’s continues to be popular for baptisms and we have been working with baptism families to ensure they understood and were committed to being part of the church family through preparation and including them in our Sunday and/or Little Miracles services.

Our youth group, Generate, got busier with existing members bringing along friends. The group currently ranges from around 10 to around 20 youth each meeting and provides a safe place to explore and deepen their faith and relationship with God. The youth asked for more regular meetings and so Generate Extra now meets once a month as well as Generate. This is largely youth from St. Mary’s, is much more structured learning. We have booked to go on a local family/youth camp which will be run by our neighbouring parish All Saints in the summer.

We are continuing our work with St. Mary’s school. We now lead a choir enrichment club on a Tuesday evening. The choir is learning a variety of Christian and other music. They sang at various events over Christmas including here for the Friendship Group and a selection of the choir at the Carols for Choirs.

Within the last year, we visited a number of different schools for assemblies including for harvest, Remembrance and Christmas and will continue to offer this to any school wanting input from us. We have also been asked to help out at All Saints school whilst they are in interregnum. We have offered to support with a service once a term for the time being.

A local nursery has had regular visits to church to learn more about different Christian festivals as well as the church itself and to help with Mary’s Food Bank.

A team from St. Mary’s has been attending the Inspire course led by the diocese which is aimed at breathing new life into ministry to children and young people in churches across the diocese . We are in the process of applying for funding from the diocese to support our children and families work going forward. We have also started applying for and receiving smaller amounts of funding from other sources to support the ongoing work with our children and families. This includes our Worship4All services which are now held every week, other than when we have joint seasonal services.

Joint services have included wider groups such as Scouts and Guides of varying ages as well as our worshiping community here at St. Mary’s. Children have been encouraged to take part in these services whether that be through dance, reading, drama, singing or taking part in talks.

Our work with children this year has included a pancake party, Good Friday activities, light party, Christmas activities, choir, baptism and communion preparation and support with young leaders. We are looking to deepen the faith of our existing children through prayer, study of the Word through fun and engaging services, and to grow our core group from those who are currently on the fringe.

None of this work would be possible without the faithful team of volunteers who have grown in number, confidence and commitment. We are truly thankful for all their hard work and commitment to the important work carried out with children and young people.

The use of the Magdalene Centre is very much appreciated for all the children’s work, parties and services that take place.

Ecumenical

In January Sutton Churches came together for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity held at The Magdalene Centre.

Church members joined events organised by Sutton Churches Together including a Good Friday service which was held in the town centre, along with activities in The Idlewells Shopping Centre for children at various times in the year.

Thank you to Margaret Williamson who undertook secretarial duties and acted as the link person to bring it all together.

Magdalene Centre

2023 saw an upturn in the use of the Magdalene Centre and the majority of our regular users have now returned after Covid. Among them were Tai Chi, Fitsteps, Line Dancing, Tai Kwon Do, St Mary’s Friendship Group, Sutton Belles and Kay Yallop. We have also had new regular users this year which include Slimming World, Swimming Club and Food Cycle. During the year saw the return of Mary’s Foodbank to the Magdalene Centre and Kitty’s Church run group Little Miracles. The Centre was also hired for Children’s Parties, Birthday and Anniversary Parties and Baptism Parties.

After many years as Booking Secretary and Cleaner of the Magdalene Centre, Nancy Meynell has decided to retire and our thanks go to Nancy for keeping the Centre running, doing all those behind the scenes things that no one sees, ensuring all who book the Centre have a great experience and are made to feel very welcome. As a committee one of our main objectives has always been to ensure the Centre is maintained and cleaned to a high standard and Nancy has always gone above and beyond in what she has done at the Centre. I wish to thank Lee Fletcher who has helped with the cleaning and polishing of the Hall floor. Finally, I thank all who support the work of the Magdalene Centre and especially Rev Julie and the Committee for all their support and for all who help to keep the Magdalene Centre a place of warmth and welcome to all.

Charitable giving

As in previous years, we have supported The Mission to Seafarers and the Children’s Society through the Christingle Service and other activities (please see separate report). Thank you to Kathleen Roper and team for raising funds for the Children’s Society.

Deanery Synod

Three members of the PCC sit on the Deanery Synod. This provides the PCC with a link between the parish and the wider structures of the church. There is a separate Deanery Synod Report.

Friendship Group

Another active and busy year. Our numbers vary from 14 to 20 plus depending on the weather and whatever else may be happening in people’s lives.

There is no set programme but we enjoy quizzes, dominoes, bingo and the occasional beetle drive game.

On Shrove Tuesday which was also our meeting day – the third Tuesday in the month – we enjoyed pancakes for our mid-afternoon snack, which is usually a variety of cakes, scones, wafers and sometimes savoury items.

We enjoyed an outing to Glapwell Garden Centre in June, the highlight being afternoon tea, it was raining when we set out, and continued for most of the afternoon!!

In December we once again provided a buffet lunch (pre-Christmas) when members of the Church also joined us. This year a cost of £5 per person was charged with any remaining money being given to Church as a donation (£120). St Mary’s School Choir once again came to sing Carols and Christmas Songs, which was very much appreciated by the adults. One person remarked that she didn’t feel very “Christmassy” but hearing the children sing had sparked the Christmas spirit within her. A donation was made to the school in appreciation of the children coming to sing to us, they were a treat to listen to and certainly set the tone for Christmas.

Our thanks and appreciation to those who came along to help prepare the food, set out the hall, and wash and clear up afterwards! We couldn’t have done it without you!

We look forward with anticipation to the coming year.
