Whilst the Circuit do not have a responsibility for the nearby'wesley Tree, where John Wesley preathed his last outdoor sermon in 1791, the circuit are grateful to the Local Authority. which makes sure that the tree thrrves. Achlevement and Performance 202212023 The Circuit welcomed the Revd Crawford Logan into the life of the Circuit in September 2022. Cravrford comes to us from Tendring Circuit in Essex and brings a wealth of experience of ministry in urban areas from his previous circuits and experience of ordained ministry in the Salvation Army. Crawford is be based in the Bexhill section of the Circutt, but as is customary for Methodist Church ministers, Crawford will exercise his ministry across the Circuit. Crawford. together with Rev Philip Wagstaff and the Leadership team have continued to resource the existing work wrthin the Churches in the Circuit and have continued over the year to explore new ways of supporting the ongoing work of the Methodist Churches in the area. As with many other charitable membership organisations Covid 19 continues to have an impact on the numbers of those attending worship and events. There was 3 general decline in the numbers attending public worship compared with their pre Covid levels, but this decltne has steadied and the number of those attending services of public worship {according to the count made in October 2023) has remained nearly the same as last year. While this does not give any room for complacency. it does show that the Churches continue to attract people who join together for Sunday Worship across the Circuit. The Circuit leadership team have met regularly during the year so as to inform the Circuit meeting of current opportunities available locally and nationally, as well as to explore future trends. opportunities and concerns with regards to the Charity. Following on from the Circuit Wision day which was held in the 2021/22 connexional year. one of the Supemumerary ministers, Rev Jonathan Todd. has met with each of the Churches to explore what is happening in the Church. During these sessions Jonathan has explored the national initiative A Methodist V¥7y of Life. with members of each church.

The Superintendent is a member of the Governing Body of the Bridge Federation as a Foundation Governor of Staplecross Methodist Primary School and a member of the Circuit is a Foundation Governor also. The Federation is made up of Staplecross and Salehurst Church of England Primary Schools. The posttive y￿Y that the Federation brings both Christian traditions together vffis noted posittvely in the recent SIAMS inspect50n and is seen as one of the strengths of the School. The Superintendent leads occasional assemblies and services for the school community including an Armistice Day service in the Parish Church at Staplecross. We welcomed the President of the Methodist Conference, Rev Graham Thompson. to lead the Church Anniversary Serrfice at WesleVs Chapel Winche15ea in May 2023. Also in attendance were the Chair of the South East District of the Methodist Church Rev David Hincliffe and the Mayor of Winchelsea. Members from across the Circuit continue to Use Zoom for meetings as well as for times of Worship, and for sharing conversation over coffee. The use of digital meeting spaces continues to help reduce the carbon footprint of the circutt. Members of the Circutt continue to explore how to use Zoom as an alternative to face to face meetings. The Circuit is taking part in the national experiment which is looking at how Holy Communion might be shared appropriately in the digital space. The Circuit Safeguarding Team has consolidated its work over the past year and has held two meetings for the local Church safeguarding officers which are for mutual support. They also act as a forum for conversation around current matters that the National or Regional Safeguarding teams raise with the Circuits. The Circuit also have a Circuit Property Team. members of which assist the Circuit meeting in looking after and. where appropriate, facilitate the sale of, properties across the Circuit, wtth decision5 being taken by the Circuit Meeting as Managing Trustees and the Trustees for Methodist Church Purposes who art as Custodian Trustees. Members of the Circurt Meeting act as Managing Trustees for Circuit property which at present consists of two manses. a former manse and Centenary House in BÈxhill. The Circuit Social concems group has meet over the year and continue to have conversations about the way that Churches in the circuit might engage wtth their comfftunities. A What's App group of the members has been formed. so that if a member of the public requires assistance. members of the group can be contacted so as to offer appropriate support and Slgnposting. The group can also offer support to members of the circuit who are involved in groups which support members of their community where members of the Circuit are involved, for example, in offering support to refugees or Én offering sUPPOrt to homele55 people. The Circuit meeting together with the Circuit Leadership Team and members of other teams have monitored compliance processes during the year. which includes Safeguardin& GDPR and internal Methodist Compliance for the Circuit and the Local Churches. Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schoo15

Plans for 202314 The churches will continue to hold Servi￿ of Worship in the Method1￿ Tradition locally and to offer occasional services for Baptism, Wedding and Funerals. Members of the circuit will continue to meet to join together through times of bible study or during meetings for discission and for prayer. The Circuit has SUPPOrted the 'Warm Spa￿, initiative over this past year and it is envisaged that some Churches will offer this again this year, rf this facility if required and if their location and resourcing are appropriate. The Circuit had hoped to convene a meeting to explore the Environment and Ecolo￿ but this has not yet taken place. It is envisaged that an inaugural meeting will be held before the end of this Connexional year. Some churches have joined the 'Ecochurch' movement which is administered by A Rocha UK and other churches are showing an interest. The circuit will continue to support churches which have with existing links to Ecochurch and will encourage others to join. It is envisaged that the Environmnet and Ecolo8y Team will facilitste this. As part of the development of the Circuit, it is also envisaged that a Mission Team will be formed so as to explore different vlays of mission and ministry contextually across the Circuit. The Circuit website has been revised and updated and provides a modern portal which shares information about the V￿rk of the Circuit and provides contact information for Church Officers. During the last year there has been a change in the administration of the circuit. Our administrator who had been with us for a number of years left the circuit. and a new administrator has been appointed. Part of the role of the new administrator is to also act as a PA for the two presbyter ministers. It is not envisaged that there will be any changes to the Presbyterial ministerial team until September 2025, but work is being undertaken as so to be ready for the National Methodist Church stationing process which will take place from September this year to Spring 2024 for a presbyter to be appointed in 2025. The times for Public Worship continue to appear on the Circuit Plan and on the Website. Services are led by the Minister5 (both local and visiting}, Local Preachers, Worshlp Leaders and occasionally by members of the churches. The Local Preachers and Worship Leaders meeting meet regularly through the year. so as to provide meetings for mutual support and care as well as providingopportunities for learning and sharin8. As part of the support for families Messy Church groups will continue to meet in venues across the circuit. Some churches provide space for externally run Parent and Toddler groups. many on a middlellong term basis.

Support for older people is developing with Coffee mornings in some churches becoming a regular meeting point. The Circuit have links with MHA Lauriston. and a faith team lead worship there together with the Chaplain. Links have been developed with some residential home5 locally. vthich provide a time forsingin& reflection and prayer as appropriate. Many of the churches in the arcuit SUPPOrt the work of their local foodbank, and it is envisaged that this 5UPPOrt will continue through 202314. There is also support across the circuit for the Charity 'Christians Against Poverty,. and courses take place in some of the circuit churches. The circuit continues with its link with ADDER. and seeks to SUPPOrt the homeless community through the provision of a Y￿rM spaces. As in 2022-23, 2023-24 has many opportunitie5 to develop mission and ministry across the circuit. and to engage with the communities of which we are a part. The challenges of being in a post Covid 19 environment remain, but the Circuit continue to plan for the future, building on the experiences of the past year. In this, members of the Circuit continue to support the local churches. through providin8 Opportunities for worship, prayer, study and encouragement as each church seeks to work within their local context and community.
