## **Trustees Annual Report 2020-21** ## **Covid Pandemic** The Covid Pandemic hit in March 2020. As with the rest of the world, Malawi went into a period of lockdown, with the closure of schools. This meant that all our projects were suspended, including the feeding programme. ## **Project Manager** Augustine Kambalikeni was relieved from his duties in May 2020 due to irregularities with book keeping. This is currently being investigated by a Forensic Audit in Malawi. Dumisani Chilakalaka , a new part time project manager, was employed in August 2020. This role is being funded by Barromix until August 2021. Dumisani is a connected person, and is reporting regularly to trustees. ## **Projects** The new project managers priorities were to look at current projects that had been suspended, and to prioritise these accordingly. The main priorities were identified as **building maintenance** and **staffing** . It was also a priority to ensure the school was Covid safe to allow the pupils to return. Handwashing stations were constructed outside each classroom, with vigorous hand washing routines implemented. Facemasks were made by the Women’s group, and distributed to each child. Pupils returned to school in June 2020, and closed again in December 2020, reopening in March 2021. The Nursery school pupils are yet to return. **Building maintenance** - refurbish and maintaining building structure of the school blocks. This included repairing blackboards, replacing roof supports, floor repairs and repair of external plastering. These were all completed while the school was still closed. The warehouse was repointed and plastered. A new floor was laid and burglar bars were fitted to all windows. This job is ongoing into the next financial year. The water tower was pointed and work is still ongoing to complete this. The building of the tower was suspended in March 2020 due to Covid. The Nursery school foundation was completed in April 2020 as lockdown started. ## **Staffing** Staff had lacked leadership and direction, and motivation was low. The new project manager streamlined the different departments, and new contracts were issued, which included targets for each staff member. Dumisani ensured that all employees had access to a bank account, and an automated payment system was initiated. This adds another level of efficiency and ensures correct use of funds. ## **Self sustainable Projects** It was decided to concentrate on restarting the projects that are income generating, in a bid to make Kasupe self sustainable. With this in mind, we identified 3 projects to be our priority- permaculture, beekeeping and mushroom growing. **Permaculture** - the garden was re-laid, to accommodate growing more vegetables and fruit. Plants included oranges, mango, papaya, banana, eggplants, rapeseed, tomatoes, onions and spices. This is progressing well, and first crops have been harvested and produce sold at market. The money at present is being re-invested into the projects. **Bee keeping** - an expert was brought in to advise on how to progress the project. All the hives were stripped of their paint, and the plastic sheeting was replaced. There are currently 11 beehives, 4 of which have been colonised. Plans are in place to bring in another expert to advise on how to attract more bees. Honey has been harvested from several of the hives. **Mushroom growing** - the mushroom shed was completed and made ready for planting. Seeds were purchased from the Agricultural college ready for planting soon. ## **School Feeding Programme** This was suspended by the Malawi Government in April 2020, and has yet to be started. Several pupil were identified as being vulnerable and food packages were provided to their families. We are hoping this project will restart soon in the new financial year. ## **Special Needs project** On a previous trip, a child was identified with complex learning and physical disabilities. His mother was carrying him everywhere, which was becoming challenging as he grew. As part of my review I was able to follow through all income and expenditure as per the bank statements. I was also able to check and verify all expenses via an appropriate receipt. Based on my review I am not aware of any material changes that should made to the accounts and my review concludes that the accounts represent a true and fair view of income and expenditure in the year ending 31 March 2021.
