What a year we had like so many other small businesses and charities. The first year of lockdowns because of Corona virus saw our small shop in Bideford closed for most of the year whilst our ongoing ‘literacy projects’ still continued.
We were able to take advantage of the Government grants administered through Torridge District Council and so could continue to pay the rent on our Mill Street shop whilst it was closed.
The 2 overseas projects (Project Pearls in the Phillipines and Empower the Gambia) that we help in a small way by supplying books, received several boxes of books. Project Pearls UK rep. (Daren ) was able to drive down from Bristol to collect two loads of books. The Empower the Gambia rep (Gilly) lives locally so we were able to deliver them to her.
Sadly the two UK projects (helping Devon libraries in both local Hospitals and the 3 Devon Prisons) had to be put ‘on hold’ as their libraries were not able to receive books because of the pandemic.
Our enthusiastic,, though small band of volunteers were always supportive even though the shop had to remain closed for most of the year and so, as a Charity BRUK is in ‘good health’ and we look forward to reopening the shop and continuing with our ‘literacy projects’ in 2021/22
