The church family is continuinE to grow in numbers. including some brand-new Christians. We are especially grateful for God sendrng us new young adults. 8.00 Still regularly attracts 10-15 people. continuing to attract a widening pool of people coming, and slightly less every-week attendance. 10.30 is visibly getting larger. and you may have noticed additional chairs being put out as the service progresses. A significant pressure point therefore remains keeping safe ratios for Children and Youth provision in a context of growth. and therefore the need to recruit additional leaders. Adding Chairs in church is easy- adding new team members is not. Wilson is Still covering both Kids and Youth leadership. but he is at the Birchwood during the morning seNice as Younger Youth has outgrown the vicarage. We don't want to have to turn a new family away because we don't have a large enough team. l am enormously grateful to those of you who serve our children and young people. week by week. Children's team you've been heroic. under Wilson's temporary oversight. Gardening team - you've put up with endless vandalism and destruction. Thank you for making our grounds so beautiful. nonetheless. Wider ¢on¢erns Our denomination continues its internal difficulties. Historic safeguarding issues have dogged both the Archblshop of York and the incoming Archbishop of Canterbury. I think we keep praying for more light and truth here. because concealment and reputation-management can only harm the gospel. Bishop Sarah's appointment mearhs there is a critical vacancy for the Bishop of London. and it would be great to have someone gospel-hearted with a passion for evangelism and church planting in that role. And we have ongoinE battles over identity and sexuality. General Synod has accepted the House of Bishops, recommendation to draw a lirhe under the Living in Love ond Ft7ith discussions. but also to press ahead with further discussions and proposals. So the various issues around sexuality will continue to dominate the agenda and make the election5 for a new General Synod critically irnportant. 1 re31isÈ that, like any church, St Jarnes contains a range of views. However. Mark and I remain of the view that the biblical tradition St James holds as central requires us to maintain that the only place God has promised to bless sexual relationships Ès within malelfemale marriage. I'll happily talk that position through with any of our members. I want to keep St james in line with a wide range of similarly-minded evangelic31 and Catholic churches htt alli3ncecofe.or I who do not want the position on human sexuality to ch3rhgÈ. Our PCC is monitoring developments closely and discussing our differences with care. That Alliance, and the Church of England Evangelical Council. continue to hold discussions about whether there should be any structural realignment within the denomination, and if so when, and of what form. I know my view represents the historic position of St James, and that is the postiion I promised to phold at my ordination, and again when I became your vicar. Globally. there has already been a major realignment, with a large proportion of the Anglican Communion trying to reset the agenda of gospel partnership. This is under the leadership of the Global Anglican Futures Conference IGAFCONI of which l am a trustee. A variety of different books and genres were preached on, addressing several different topics. At both the 10.'30 service and The Gathering16pml. we started the year with a topical series c311ed 'True North- designing a lrfe that reflect5 our deepest purposes- and considered our life priorities, loving God with our minds. bodies. serving God with our money and work. amongst other tOPiC5. Over Lent we walked slowly through "the Lord's Prayerf. to help us in our personal and corporate prayer lives. Our"Ignition" series took us through Acts 10 and 11 to prepare us for our summer mission. The summer was given over to the letter of l John- again at both services. In the Autumn, the 10:30 congregation land preachers!) were challenged by the second half of the prophetic book of Daniel. The Gatherirkg however went back to ba5iC5 and had an overview of Mark's gospel. Over Advent both 5ervice5 looked at the different songs found in the gospels.. The Magnificat, The BenedictU5 and the Nunc Dimmitis. At the 8am communion, in addition to the BCP lectionary. we also covered Mark's gospel in Iwo halves. "When jesus Met.... was the name of our whole year All Age Series as we considered. from Luke's gospel. different encounters Jesus had. In February this service was led by the WAVE team. which was a delight for all present. We are thankful for all who have given their time to preparing and bringing God's Word to bear on our lives across the different se￿ices. ècial Events There was an opportunity to join one of three evangelistic courses in 2025= 'Christianitv Explored. starting in January, 'Hope Explored. in April and 'Alpha' in September. Chris also ran a course called 'SHAPE'. about discovering our personal ministry gifts and Taking the Plunge., looking at options for full or part-time Christian work. On 15 March. we followed up our hugely successful overview ofthe Old Testament. with 'Walk Through the New Testament.. In an engaging and interartive way, Paul Keeys helped us to see God's Word through the'Big Picture,. 'An Evening wrth Henry Olonga. on Saturday 14 June held us transfixed by Henry's candid testimony and powerful Gospel message. Roger Simpson was our guest speaker at a Men's Breakfast on 5 July,. and another breakfast in the Autumn allowed fof biblical thought about Al. and what part it could and should play in a Christian's life. Two events in the Summer gève us the opportunity for fellowship outside.. our annual Hog Roast in the Vicarage garden and a farrhily picrkic irh Highgate Wood5. Finally, on 20 September. james Carey delighted us with 'God. the Bible and Everything., a 60-minute comedy sketch in which the whole bible is unpacked in a humorous and intricate way. Parish Church of St James with St Matthew, Muswell Hill Year ended 31 December 2025 Music Minist and The Gatherin Thank God for Our Audiovisual IAVI Teams and Musicians We praise God for our faithful AV teams and musicians who serve week in and week out, making it possible for the Word of God to be both heard and seen. We are very 8rateful that the Lord has provided new TThembefs this year for iMJth the audio and display teams, as well as a few new musicians. Sadly. however. we have had to say goodbye to some long-standing members of St James Jean Airey. Freddie Notter and Nathan Sh3w- who were so involved in many different areas of church life. We have also had to say goodbye to Odoro and his family. who, although new, were deeply involved and will be greatly missed. It has been a real joy to welcome Alvin. Dan. and Kyu onto the sound team. as well as Mark. Joseph. and Adam onto the band for the 10:30am and 6pm services. Serving Together Beyond Our Church It Was 31$0 a joy to serve alongside musicians from our own church and from other churches at The Big Weekend. It wa5 a great encouragement to serve together and worship as one. We also held a Joint Prayer Service in November which included several churches- it was great to sing together and prayer together. Growing Involvement from Our Young People Our teenagers are getting increasingly involved in the evening service on the technical side. We also started a youth band practice on Fridays. which met several times this past year. There are some exciting plans in place for both our younger and older youth bands this coming year. as we seek to grow this area further. Praise & Prayer Evenings Our monthly Praise and Prayer evenings have been a real joy. Even when numbers are small and it can be disheartening. our people consistently leave encouraged and reminded of the truths we sing together. and they carry them with them in the week. Gathering Day Away and Church Family Life The Gathering Day Away was 3 wonderful time. Forty-five of us from the evening service met at Oak Hill College. where we heard two talks (prepped by Wilson and Enoch), sang together, and spent time growing both in God'5 Word and in our relation5hÈps with one another. We have also been meeting each month for a bring-and-share meal after the services. These times have been a great way ol growing closer as a church family and encouraging one another to keep following and holding on to Christ. A Joyful December We thank God for a choir of 56 people who sang and retold the Christmas message of Christ, accompanied by the Metropolitan Brass Band. God provided a wonderful team Graham. who worked so hard in prepping and liaising with all the choir rehearsals and parts for the band. Caroline Parish Church of Stjames with St Matthew. Muswell Hill Year ended 31 December 2025 with her help in rehearsals, Andre for his conducting skills and Anando with his voice and passion for the Gospel to be proclaimed - were all crucial in making traditional carols a special night. Across the two services. over l.OCM) people came through our doors to hear the gospel pfoclaimed. Our Contemporary Carols seNice also grew significantly, from 145 to 265 people and it was a joy seeing $0 many new faces and family's beginning to come through. It was wonderful to sing even more carols at the Crib servi￿. Debbie and Wilson did 3 stunning job of putting that together. a wonderful fresh take on the nativity story with the teens and young adults. Praise God for their efforts and the rnusicians and tech involved. Thank God for our Technical and Media Support volunteers. Michael, Andy and Stephen have been a real joy to serve with, particularly with stage set-up. audio advice and general maintenance. Christiane, Hannah. Naomi and Kiran are such a gift to St James.. we are grateful for their many hours of behind-the-scenes work on ProPresenter/Proclaim and on design. We would struÉgle greatly without all the help. and we praise God for them. Cornrnuni Minist Ellie is delighted to be back full-timè as Head of Community Ministries and would like to thank her colleagues, church family, and volunteers for sustaining our work during her absence. James Place- Monda ht Meal Our weekly Monday Night Meal at Jame5 Place continues to be a beacon of hospitality and community, welcoming all to a warm and friendly environment. Each week. we serve a nutritlQU5 main meal, dessert, and refreshments to an average of 40 guests from dwerse backgrounds, including families. groups of friends. individuals, and lotal workers. This ministry provide5 a vital opportunity for connection and community-building. offering a relaxed atmosphere where gue5t5 can feel valued and cared for. It is also a key outreach point. allowing us to invitè guests to other church events. such as Christianity Explored and church services. We are so grateful for our dedicated volunteers and the generosity of our food donors, COOK and Dunn5 Bakery. who help make this ministry possible. Communi Café Our Community Café continues to thrive. wèlcoming around 30 Euests from across Muswell Hill and beyond. We are grateful to Dunns Bakery again for donating sweet treats. which complement our refreshments and add to the warm atmosphere. A highlight of our cafe is hosting our'super Soup Makers,. a group for adults with additional needs based in Barnet and students from Tree House Special School. Together they prepare and serve delicious soup to our guests, promoting inclusivity and community spirit. Each session includes our Thought for the Day. Bible verse and prayer. Ellie has also adopted into this prayer requests from those who attend. Stephen Steppings (her blind friendl, a church family member. also likes to share the word each month. Across thi5 past year we were excited to welcome 18 visitor5 from around the country. who were interested in experiencing or replicating worship meetings where people of all abilities contribute (doing thing5 Wlth and not for each other) and feel equally valued. WAVE Church style groups are being established across the UK and in November a team from Muswell Hill went to Haywards Heath to support the local team there as they held their first service. We also enjoyed leading morning services at both St James and the Methodist Church. with the opportunity to share our vibrant style of mixed-ability worship with a wider group. We are grateful for the safeguarding and prayer support provided by St. James. that enables WAVE Church to remain a place of Safety and comfort for those of us who regularly come each month and those who pop in occasionally when in need of encouragement and reassurance of God's love for them. Susie Huntington has also ably led on the renamed "Bumps and Babies" midweek ministry. "Word on the Hill" has grown and restarted teaching a Bible oveNiew focussing on God's promises on Thursdays. wonderfully supported by Pathway. We await a new Children's Minister to continue the vital work of teaching and reaching children with the Gospel. Youth ministry has lots to give thank5 for this year. ITBWI The Big Weekend" has been running for ten years, and has welcomed new churches in close proximity. This has led to fruitful outreach. and Christian Union's started in schools. We pray for mo￿. as well as a healthy rnnning and growth of this collective of youth ministries in North London. Wednesday and Thursday Bible Studies were restarted this year in Galatians, continued onto -Big Questions~ and are starting 3"K3leidoscope~ series on Relationships. A Football team was also started in the local community. Friday youth club has grown in numbers and has been guided by the church calendar and the young people in covering the creeds and their questions. Sundays have had teaching on l Thessalonians, ~People Jesu5 met,~ and a Bible overview. The church has hosted 2 Eco church events as well as half a dozen Youth bands and continLsed to attend Sorted. Youth served at the holiday club on Joseph as well as at the crib service and in outreach for Christmas. Youth have continued serving with the restart of James. Place, and have joined with BÈSOM, Wave, Music, Promiseland. PU, Sound. Leadin& Reading and Welcotne. The church has also taken assemblies and run sessions with pupils at Fortismere, Blanche Nevile, Our Lady of Muswell, and St james's Primary. TheWve also had some incredible opportunities for socials to grow closer in fellowship and invite friends in. This has included fireworks and youth fests in North Finchley, worship nights, trip5 to ice skating, Thorpe Park, bowling. the park, supporting friend5 at the theatre, and baking, craft and FIFA tournaments. Without volunteers, this ministry cannot legally or healthily function. and with more volunteers, this ministry could reap a harvest- so one of our prayers is that the church works together for growth now. Youth have been safegvarded helpfully and responsib￿ and look forward to continue working closely across ministry areas. There have been a number of young people being baptised as a result of faithful evangelism and discipleship from parents. friends and leaders. and through schools. outreach. and online discipleship. It typically involve5 Studying the Bible together- prayer- mentoring.. discipleship.. retreat. conferences. and outreach. Events On Saturday 15 February, there was an informal coffee morning at The M05sy Well.. a chance to connect and pray together. A group of around 20 women were led by a Guide from the One Truth Project on a tour of the British Museum on Saturday 5 April. They finished in the British Library where they looked at the collection of ancient Scriptures. Together they discovered fascinating artefacts that brought Biblical history to life. Debbiè Wright led a morning of Contemplative Prayer in the side chapel, ahead of Holv Week. On the evening of 5 June. a craft evening was held in local studios- a small group enjoyed creating beautiful batik tote bags over light conversation. A coffee and desserts evening on 3 July provided another opportunity for fellowship. Two members were invrted to share their testimonies. and there was a short talk on why Jesus matters. FOCUS meets on a Thursday morning and has three groups that meet in the church building. and one other Eroup that meets online. Women's discipleship One-to-ones and prayer ministry continue. ort Team Throughout the yeaf. the Supporr Team continued to offer the best support possible across all ministry areas. In 2025, there wÈrÈ 272 on the electoral roll. Our DBS Administrator. Jean Airey. supervised the administration of 35 DBS check5.. 25 for those working with children. 3 for those working with adults and 7 for both, before passing her duty onto our newest member of staff. The Staff Team would like to put on record our thanks forjean's long-term service to the church and to the staff team, and we wish her and her family a great start to their new Iwes in Nottingham. Attendance continued to be strong. building from a positive year. In February 2026, the school received its SIAMS inspection IThe Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schoo151 and received an entirely positive report. On Saturday 20 September there was a Clothes Swap event at the Birchwood Centre. Thi5 was to raise awareness of sustainability within our church community, and to support our mission partners. A Rocha International and Tearfund- both these charities do incredible work in conservation, environmental protection. and climate advocacy. Support for the norrtination of a Deanery School Governor, requested by Fr Ben Kerridge. (This Synod requirement is reducing as more Church schools in Haringey join the LDBS Academy Trust.) 4. The Deanery school parent governor. Debra Morrison - who has a legal background - was selerted for St James School. as nominated by Mark Murthen. Deanery Synod next met on Thursday 5th June. at St Andrew's Parish Church, Alexandra Park Road. The Bishop of Edmonton talked about his brief on Racial Justice for the Diocese of London. The Deanery Synod also voted Estelle Addy back on as a parent governor at St James School, and her skill set was praised. especially on safeguarding. On 22 October, the Leader of Haringey Council. Councillor Peray Ahmet. spoke to Synod about the work ofthe council. The meeting was held at Holy Innocents, Tottenham Lane. At each meeting. the committee spent time looking at the Bible, praying and conducting normal business including updates on buildings work, World Mission Group and finance. as well as safeguarding. data protection and ecological concern5. In preparation for the Annual Meeting IAPCMI in May 2025. these items were approved.. the 2024 Annual Report and Financial Statements, and the Financial Budget for 2025. Our Patrons the Diocese of London and Common Fund We continue to enjoy an open and productive relationship with the Patrons of the Church, The Bishop of Edmonton. and the Church Pastoral Aid Society. The Common Fund we pay to the Diocese of London fully covers the direct costs of employing our Vicar, and in addition contributes to other costs of the Diocese of London. The budget cover5 work on the Church. the Centre and the church offices- also, The Btrchwood Centre and six residential properties. l. Stonework repairs= The largest expenditure of 2025 was masonry and stonework repairs. The supplier was our regular ecclesiastical masonry firm. well known to us. and who regularly work on listed churches. The starting point was to address water ingress into the offices. Inspection of the leak's origÈns revealed significant damage. at height. needing Urgent work and additional scaffolding. The total cost was £22.193.18 of which E3.931.48 in VAT was recoverable under the Listed Place of Worship Scheme. 2. Fire Safety- Offices & Vicarage: Adjustments to the ￿mainIng two fire doors (music room and community office) were made. other office doors having been completed in 2024. Additionally, a new fire door and alarm was installed. separating the offices and the Vi¢8rage. 3. 8 St James Lane= In March 2026 the Diocese conducted its Quinquennial Survey Rèport of No 8 St James Lane. Initiated by the Diocese. and paid for by St Jame5, the report sets out a schedule of works to be completed over a 5-year timeframe. Work on the list has started including an EV charging point which align5 Wtth the Diocese's Net Zero ambitions, repairs to the roof flashing. new electrical distribution board and EICR. and replacing the collapsed rear fencing. Total-. £8,914.31. 4. Birchwood Centre.. urgent electrical rewiring. remedial repairs and electrical pass ¢ertifi¢8te, plus minor re-decorating. cost £3.575.00. 5. Lower Birchwood flat= Improvement to the staff accommodation at the Lower Birchwood flat included moving a stud partition to enlarge the narrow doltble bedroom by taking in a portion of the large living room, creating two rooms of more appropriate size. Partition works. redecorating, recarpeting. and improvements to bathroom fittings came to £9,040.15. 6. Upper Birchwood flat: vacant since September 2024. the property needed repairs, redecorating and minor improvements (total cost £2.878.251 to preparè for letting commercially. It was let in November to a member of the church farrhily. 7. 14 Woodside Mansions.. our long-term corrhrnercial tenant5 vacated the 3-bed property in May. after 7 years occupancy. To update it for occupation by 5t James. Youth Minister and his family, the Standing Committee agreed a separate budget of £8.5CQ to redecorate and recarpet. Total spend was £8.261.66. 8. Church grounds= staging Ltsed by the North London Chorus, leaning against the Centre external wall under tarpaulins. has previously twice been criticised by the Diocese for two Quinquenni31 reports. Providing storage entailed clearing a collapsing shed, sourcing a sturdy cabin. a larger slab, earthwork stabilisation and two skips. Cost £7,233.00. The costs will be recovered over a S- year period. We would like to register our appreciation of the St James administration team who once again have supported all these works cheerfully and with good grace. We liaise closely with our partners and their needs, which is why we significantly increased our support for the Kenyons, and were able to help with a short-term mission trip for Mia Byrne to South America_ We are deliberately trying gently to reduce the size of our reserves. so that we can remain prudent but a150 be generous and faith-filled. Looking forwards. we are always keen to raise new Partners and Group members from within the church family. strengthen the links with Pastorates. and encourage a church team trip to Cambodia. Safe uardin The PCC adopted the 2025 Parish SafeEuarding Policy Statement in July. There were no serious Safeguarding incidents in 2025 that needed to be notified to the Charity Commission. Work continued in 2025 to implement the processes in the Safer Recruitment & People Management Guid3nce120211. Those related to safer recruitment are in place. but work 15 Still needed on Safer people management processes for ongoing support and oversight of volunteers, and safeguarding data protection and retention. An updated Learning and Development Framework came into force on l January 2025. A key change was that everyone working Wlth children, young people and vulnerable adults need5 to do Awareness of Domestic Abuse training. and this is being implemented across the ministries. Our compliance with safeguarding policies 15 tracked in the online Parish Dashboard. ￿ reported last year. the House of Bishops. policy IPromoting a Safer Church." safeguarding policy statement for children. young people and adults. In April the PCC discussed Promoting a Healthy and Safe Culture, and in September adopted procedures to comply with guidance for Lone Working with Children and Vulnerable Adults. and Appropriate Boundaries with Children and Vulnerable Adults. Finante To provide the services and pastoral care within our church, outreach to the local community, and SUPPOrt for world mission. we spent an average of aboLtt E70.000 a month. Our total expenditure. including depreciation, increased from £826.830 in 2024 to £847,820 in 2025, a rise of over 2%. Without the generosity of our church members, we would not be able to provide the breadth of service and outreach. Donations. including Gift Aid. increased from £722.091 in 2024 to £743.062 in 2025. Regular giving was relatively unchanged. but a small nurrhber of large lump Sum gifts helped to grow our donations by just under £21.000.
