Background
Hambleden with Frieth and SkimRtt Parochial Church Council is the largest Parish in the
Hambleden Valley group ol thurches (HVG). managirvJ jointy the affairs of Sl. Mary the
Virgin Church, Hambleden and St. John the Evangelist Church. FrEth.
Rector Revd. Andy Slorch was appointed on 4 December 2023 and mO￿d into the new
Rectory, an exists'ng property that was subsequenty modemised in Pheasants Hill wth his
family in April 2024. Andy is ably supported by Associate Prwt Revd. Sue Morton who has
been in the valley Sin￿ 2012.
Throughout the year. the parBh continued to be supported by warious visiting and retired
clergy. In particular, Revd. Peter Viney regularly took seNices and is a very ￿lCOMe visitor
to the benefice.

PCC Meetlngs
The PCC mel four times during the year. (exduding the APCM) in person (no meelings were
held by Zoom this year} lo conduct the busi￿ of the PCC. All of the meetings were held
at St Katharines,. Pamioor.
The PCC Standing C(xnmrtlee did not nRel to exwlite urgent busin&%s during the year, as
irtual meetings" are the preferred way to involve all members of the PCC in decision
makiryJ. All PCC members are sent full details of the issue(s) and asked to vote to accept
or reject proposals by email by the published deadline. Four virtual meetings Y￿re held in
2025 to expedite the urgenl business of the PCC that could not be delayed unlil the next
scheduled PCC meeling.
Since July 2024. Revd. Ar￿ introduced a Shared meal with PCC'S al each PCC
m￿ting, as a mean8 of improving our fellowship with other PCC'S in the Hambleden valley.
The idea being that over two evenings. all PCC'S woukl hold their n*tings and rotate each
time to have an opportunty lo share a meal together.
Chur¢h SONIC
In 2025, pattem of services has remained unchanged.
Average attendan(a8 at Sunday 8er¥ice8 in October 2025 wa8 31 in Hambleden and 26 in
Frieth (Hambleden 2024 - 32, 2023- 40. 2022 - 21 adults. Frieth 2024- 32, 2023 - 36 2022
- 20 adulis). These numbers are sometimes skewed by baptisms, school services or group
services being hekl which dramat￿lty increase attendan￿.
Zoom church services have proved popular wilh 8(fft kw18 and (y)ntinued on most
Wednesdays throughout the year.
A monthly lay4ed •ervlce In Hambleden has a small but steady congregatk)n.
Hambleden monthly 8am BCP Communion is consistenty ￿11 attended 10-14. A
different congregation from 11 am
Frleth 5th Sunday 8am BCP Communlon is regularly attended byB - 10 parishioners.

Wlld Church. outdoor services take pla￿ every second Sunday throughout the year and
have continued at a warlety of venues across the valley (excluding August). An activity of
Some sort, a couple of hymns are sung. a Bible pa&8age is real and simple prdyer usual
followed by some appropriate refreshments.

Thorough repairs and Maintenan￿ of all ekntions on the south SHle of Hambleden church
roof were carried out together with repairs of the porth roof. lychgate roof, Pheasants Hill

Stonework Repalrs: Quotations have been sought and received from Cliveden
Conservation and A F Jones but not decided or aded upon. as funds not yet avallable.
Reredos Curtaln Meakes (Steel fabTicators) will make extension brackets to enable the
curtain to held fijrther from the wall and a little higher from the wall in 2026. Advice from Tony

Pheasants Hlll Cemetery tree survey for safety purp08e8 wa8 carr*d out in September
2024. by Pyramid Consulting. All the recommendations for (%￿Ing back and felling of many
trees lo be carried out in two stages. In April 2025 arKI lo be completed in January 2028.
Large branches have since fallen off addit￿1 tree8 and C￿ared away. Cemetery grass
now in better and more attractive order.
Kftchen?tt• and Loo ProJ•cL" A meeling for the PTOPO8ed Hambleden Church toilet and
krtchenette project took place on 51h March. The usefvl infomiation provided by Sophie
Hammond from the diocese was discussed. Further conversation e¥plored the ft)mation of
committee, ideas for the stlucture of the tolletlkitchenette, appointrnentef architects and
application for a development granL During the year the fundraising ann of the registered
charity was renamed 'Friends of Hambleden Church, (previously Save Our Churches
Association (SOCA).
Various layout options were dis(xMed with architects. an application was made to the
Development Fund for a grant of half (£2160) the development costs of the project. The
statement of Needs (created by Lin Gilbey) and the Ststement of SIgnffiCan￿ (created by
Laura Wortley) ￿re submrtted lo the dio(xse. Lin and Laura have been particularly
significant in pushing this project forvard and il shoukj be noled that we are so very grateful
to tt*m both for trEir unrelenting hard work.
Hambleden Church Llghtlng - fioodlights on the north sNJe of the church and
connected to the Lutron lighting system were replawl.
Hambleden Electrlcs - The lightening conductor strip was connected lo the surge
protection box inside the church. Electricians found that some of the 'failed' light bulbs had
fauEty ffttings which needed to be replawl. This rr￿nS that in future rf changing the light
bulb doesn't resolve the problem it will need an e18CttKian to attend to the fittings.

Howson Momorfal ProJoct-The dedicalic￿ of the Howson memorial took pla(* on Sunday
26th January 2025. It was alterKled by Martn Cook {stone carver) Gwyneth Ashcroft (map
design) Mark YourvJ and Debbie Boughffiw (Director of Operab'ons. The Poppy Factory)
mèmbers of thé Howson family. LL Col. Colin Bulleid (Secretary. Royal Hampshire Mus8um)
plus many others. Member5 of The Royal Britth Legion, Mark Tum8r and Makyla D8vlin
(SldVCCB) were also in atten￿Ce. memorial plaque was unNeiled by Mart Young from
The Poppy Factory arml the $8rvice was led by Sue Morton and Andy Storch.
In December, Frlèth churchyard had a tree survey CWTied out by Peter Harding, and
maintenance were recommended ¢x) 4 tree8.
Spaclal Servlces and Cour
Wedne•day Momlng Communlon S•rvlco is a *eekly said service of Eucharist in St
Mary's, Turville with prnyers for healing arKI anointing wth oil. on the fourth Wednesday of
every month at 10.15am.
There is a Candlffims Swvko held at Flngest around 2nd Fetmjary annually.
There was an Ash Wednuday seNio with imposition of Ash88.
Th8 Blble s￿dY grnup conb.nues to meet regularfy in Turvllle.
Harvost F•$tlval serVi￿S were well attended in both churches. A Wld HaNest Bread
Making service was held at Frieth and proved very popular with over 80 people attending.
Th• Anlmal Blesslng Servk• is held annually in October on the Village Green, TuNille.
All Souls S•rvlc8 i8 held annually to remember th08e have departed. Thi8 year rt was
held at Frieth for the second year.
The Chrfslmu •wvlc•s at Frf•th, indudiTrJ Chrfstlngh, tho whole school Service and the
nlno 10•80ns (a first for Frieth and another Andrew Green 8pecial featuring the history of
the service and rn￿1¢) all went down very indeed.
Tho Royal Brlll•h Loglon Aftnual Servk• of R¢m•mbrance was held in Hambleden
Church wilh a large congreg*'on, and ceremony afterwards at the vllage memorial. Since
the disbanding ofthe local RBL a few years ago the Valley Annual SeNice of RemembranL%4
Is held in Hambleden wilh a large congregatson and fOll¢￿ved by the laymg of wreaths on the
village war nRmorial Alt the men lost from all the parishes in both Wars are remembered at
this service. All the other churches have prayers or a servi￿. Frlelh Church hekl a short
serrfice and had a fascinatirKJ tslk by local historian and broad￿Ster Andrew Green.
A Motherlng Sunday lay lad service was held at Hambleden with children assisb'ng wth the
distribution of posies for all. Frieth church also held a special 'Wild Church. Mothering
Sunday Se￿iCe with k)cal children saying special prayers and giving thanks for mothers.
Posies of daffodils were giv8n to all women in attendance.
Two Woddlng Prnparath)n Days were held in the eaty part of Ihe year *ryth the couples
that were to be matried later In the year. These days are always very popular wrth couples
as useful infomialion, tips hints help make final preparations for wethling ServI￿S go
smoothly.
Plough Sunday is a Servi￿ of prayer. dedication aThJ blessing for all those involved in
agrFculture and the countyside. This year rt vms held at Hangar Farm in Fingest in January
on the first Sunday after Epiphany.

Advént and Christmas Sorvic•s wern hekl at Hambleden arKI Frth churdRs and
induded Carol service (H), Christingle Se￿iCe (H. F). Midnight Mass (H) and Christmas
moming (H, F) As always. these services are very well attended.
Frieth Church of England Combined School continue to hotd several seNt<X8 each
school year at Frieth Church. induding Easter, Christmas. leavers servic8 and new school
year and the Rector attends school fortnyhty to undertake vthole school a&8embly and is
also a member of the govemirnJ body.
Charltablo Glving
Chantable giving reduced slightly over last year but the PCC feft it was important to conlinue
to 8UPPOrt various charrlies that do such good work and rely on grants. This year a total of
£2,949 was given (2024 - £3,962, 2023 £4,778). ￿an1$atIonS supported include;
Christian Aid, Communty Matter5, Friends of Christchurch Cathedral, local Chnstrnas gift
boxes to local people, Royal British Legion, Age UK. Blood Bikes, Kitty Kits (Wikl Church)
and Riding forthe Di8atAed. Please see the a¢¢ounts for fvll details of grant aKJed aMC￿nts.
Oth•r Acfjvltl
The Tw Club, for residents of the parth arKI valley, meet weekly at Sl Katharine'8 Pamioor
throughout th8 year to enjoy acliviti8s such as, cards, board games, ￿.￿j0, quizzes, a talK
or occasional visit, arKI indude tea, cakes goLyI company and great conversation and
fellowship. The Tea Club celelxated its 23rd blrthday in OCto￿r 2025 (except for a brief
suspension during the Covid pandemic). Vvdl done Tea Club, keep rt goingl
Hambleden arKI Frieth church88 host services 8fKI events through L•nt and Holy
Palm Sunday service was held at Hamb￿. Frlondly Lant lunches were hekl at Frieth
(1 date) and Hambteden (3 dates). The Fri8th lunch proceeds were given to the One Can
Tru8t. Good Frlday and Eastsr Day services were held in Hamb￿tsn and Frieth.
The HaMbI￿on •nd Frleth Cholrn, under ts direction of ￿ l)irector of Music. Jo
Hutchins, operated throughout the year providing wvnderful mu8icaS 8UPPOrt and joy at all
8ervic08, many weddirys, funerals and b*m8.
Hambledon and Turvllle B•ll-ringorn - There have Lwi bells in the Hambleden valley for
at least six hundred years. Out of the six churches in the group. only'Tup4ill8 <6 bells) and
Hambleden (8 bells) have bells hung for method ringiTrJ and call d)ange8. The oldest is the
'Agincourt Bell. at Hambloden. which dates bad( to the battle of Agincourt in 1415. There
are more than a dozen enthusiastic ringer5 who gr¥e up th￿'r evenings to practice at Tuprfille
CNednesdays) and Hambleden (Fridays), 80 they can properfy call the congregation to
Service, and to ring after weddiNJs and mark other special dates or events. Th8 ringers are
members of the Oxford Diocesan Guild of C￿￿[Ch Belln'ngers.
Church Porch Teas through ts summer monts offer refreshments to locals and passers-
on Sunday aftemoons in Hambleden and make an extremely valuable financial
contnbution to the running of the churches. Our sincere thanks go to Penny Wright who
organised the church tea6. This year, there was also musical errtertairment on 88veral
occasions, and over £ 7.000 was raised for thurch funds.
Frieth church offjanise a monthty Lunch Club held at The Yew Tree, Frieth. This was
restarted in 2022 after a break dunng the COVKI pandemic and approximately 15- 20 people
now regularfy attend each monthly 8venL

The PCC is a member of the Rural Forum Church Warden's Group. a very useful group
giving church wardens from the Wycombe Deanery the opportunty to pool ideas and to
create a long-tenn support network. This year the group was extended to include the urban
thurthes and continues to be very well SuPp￿d.
Once again. Hambleden and Frieth churches signed up to the annual Rlde and Strlde
event organised by the Bucks Historic Churches Trust. People through the county visit
churches and record their attendance and re￿1Ve refreshments and hospitality. This year it
took Pla￿ in September with Bishop Dave being the onty visitor to Hambleden church.
Church Mu8lc - A grant appltcation to the t>eanery Mission Fund fi)r £1.245 to purchase
portable keyboard was su￿&$fUl.
The 3 Day West Vvycombe Charnber Musr Concerts in September 25 in Hambleden church
and a small number of film days. All monitored by Samrny Webb and bringing in about
£5.000 of fvnds.
The acquisition and introduction of a Voti￿ candle Stand in Hamb*n church has proved
very popular and is well used and provides a modest amount of additi'onal income.

The Treasurer, Mrs Lynda Mar8ton-Weston would like to give her sincere thanks to Mr Rex
Alott and Mrs Sharon Smith for th￿'r assistan￿ with the banking of donab'ons throughout

to issue this report on those accounts in accordance with the temis of Regulation 25 of the
Church Accounting Regulats'ons 1997 and Regulation 7 of the Charities {Accounts and

Charity Commission under section 43(n{b) of the Act and to be found in the guidance from

considering any unusual items or disdosures in the a(xounts and seeking explanations from
you as trustees conceming any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provKle

1. Accountlng Policles
The financial statements have been prepared in accordan￿ wilh the Church Accounts'ng
Regulations 1997 together with applicabl8 ac£ounting standards and the charities SORP.
The financial Statery￿￿ have been prepared under the hislorical cost ￿nVention.
Funds
General funds reprwaent th8 funds of the PCC that are not subiect to any mtrictions
regarding their use and are available for applicalion on the general purposes of the PCC.
Funds designated for a partiC￿lar purpose by the PCC are also unrestricted. Some trusts in
the custody of the Oxford Diocesan Board of Finan￿ are restricted, and their (Xpital cannol
be u8ed.
The accounts include all transactions. a&8ets arbd fwbilities for which the PCC 18 reswnsible
In law. They do nol include the a(xx>unts of d)urch groups that their main affiliation to
another body nor those that are informal gatheiings of Church members.

Voluntary In¢ome and capltal SOU￿￿
Collection8 are recogni8ed wl*n received by or on behaff of the PCC.
Planned giving receivable under covenant or Gift AKI is re(x)gni8ed only when received.
Income tsx recoverable on covenants or gift alded donations is recognised when th8 related
income is recognised.
Grants arKI legacies to the PCC are a(minted for as Soon a8 the PCC is notified of its legal
ents'tlement and the amount due.
Income from Inv•stments
Dlvklends and interest are accounted for when r￿1Vable.
Galn8 and losses on Inv•slm•nts
Realised gains and1088es on the School House fund and the Mission Housing Propety are
recognised when the invesknents are Sold. Realised gains and losses on the various other
funds and bequests are taken inlo account each year.

the Chariiies Act 1993.
No value is placed on movable church fumishings held by the churchwardens on special
trust for the PCC and which require a faculty for disposal since the PCC considers this to be
inalienable propety. All expenditure In￿rred during the year on consecrated or benefice
buildings and Movab￿ church fumishirvJs. whether maintenarK* or improvement. is written
off as expenditure in the Statement of Financial A¢*¥￿88 and Separatety di8c108ed.
Investments
All investrnents are ntyw induded at market value.

Amounts owing to the PCC at 31 December in respect of fees, rents or ott*r income are
shown as debtors less provision for amounts that may prove uncollectable.

General Directions i&8ued by the Charity Commissioners for the independent examination
